Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone

Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone – This is the latest news about the newest trends in technology. According to Opera Software, Apple on Monday approved Opera Mini, the first alternative Web browser for its iPhone. According to a release put out by browser maker Opera earlier today, the company’s free Opera Mini browser for the iPhone and iPod touch family of devices has been approved by Apple and should appear in the App Store within 24 hours. Opera Mini is optimized to work on slower data connections and could prove valuable to iPhone users that spend time in areas without 3G coverage. It will help iPhone users most where the AT&T network is most congested, in places like New York and San Francisco. As Daring Fireball’s John Gruber pointed out, though, Opera Mini doesn’t actually render Web pages. That’s done on Opera’s servers; rather, Opera Mini renders a boiled-down, compressed markup language called OBML, making Opera Mini in some technical ways closer to a PDF reader than to a Web browser. Here’s the full press release: Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market. Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges. “We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.” Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Weekly Wrap Up: iPad Edition

The big news of the week: The iPad! Apple’s tablet was the total rage, with the faithful lining up to buy their own copy, and the rest of the world either feeling left out or snorting derisively (while secretly feeling left out.) But we tore ourselves away from our devices long enough to make the awesome web shows below for you. Feedback:

Morning Hangover — 3GS Owners, Raise Your Hand

Apple did a great job of guiding iPhone users through all the great updates coming to iPhone OS 4.0 sometime this summer, all the while neglecting to mention the biggest addition — multitasking — won’t be available on iPhone 3G. It also won’t work on the original iPhone, and the first two releases of the iPod Touch. Count me in the camp with a still-kicking iPhone 3G. Am I alone here?

Multitasking on iPhone 3G, iPad and iPod Touch Will Reach Consumers

Apple’s most sought after gadgets will be able to run more than one non-Apple application at a time soon.  The gadget includes iPhone 3G, iPad and the new iPod Touch. For example, a software upgrade from Apple (AAPL) will let users play Internet radio Pandora while searching restaurant listings. Multitasking has long been on the wish list of Apple customers and developers because it is a staple on the portable devices of Apple’s rivals. It will be available on the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch models this summer and the iPad this fall. “We weren’t the first to this party, but we’re going to be the best,” CEO Steve Jobs said at Apple’s headquarters here. “It really changes the way you use the iPhone.” Apple acknowledges problem with their gadget iPad, even with a huge hit with the masses but the techy population  holds back.  Mark Williams CEO of Modality, a developer of iPhone and iPad applications for the health-care and education markets, said multitasking would be a boon for iPad use. The new iPhone operating system offers a way to see messages from multiple e-mail accounts in a single in-box; to set up folders organizing apps, such as gaming, by category; and to better protect data for corporate use. Jobs, in his trademark black turtleneck and jeans, also unveiled an advertising platform called iAd, in which Apple will sell ads to run on apps made by outside developers. Nearly 100 million iPhones have been sold, Jobs said. “This could be a whole new avenue for the advertising industry in the digital world,” said Jobs. But he hastened to point out that Apple is “not going to be an advertising agency.” The new feature highlights how advertising is migrating to mobile devices as more consumers use them to work, shop and communicate, says Paran Johar, chief marketing officer for Jumptap, a mobile-advertising network. Maynard Um, an analyst at UBS, has raised his estimates on iPhone unit shipments this quarter, to 7.5 million from 7 million. The iPhone could get a further boost if Apple develops a version compatible with the Verizon Wireless network. AT&T has exclusive rights to the iPhone in the U.S. Verizon has told Apple it wants to carry the iPhone, but it’s unclear if or when that will happen. Meanwhile, Jobs called the iPad a “profound game-changer” and said 450,000 have sold since Saturday. iPhone’s Plus+ Developer, ngmoco, Excited For Apple’s Game Center Plans

Apple announced plans today to roll out their own system-wide social gaming network across iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad called Game Center. Several of these networks already exist — i.e. Plus+, OpenFeint — each vying for the attention of developers and consumers, hoping their network catches on and becomes the de facto platform standard. Instead, it looks like Apple will take that spot. What does this mean for companies like Plus+ developer ngmoco (aka the studio behind your latest obsession, We Rule )? Besides games, ngmoco’s been focused on pushing Plus+, one of the many social gaming networks that’s popped up in a number of games, attempting to tie them together. ngmoco president Simon Jeffery is actually applauding Apple’s efforts to unify their platform. “Game Center is an exciting first-party innovation for the ecosystem that reinforces much of what plus+ has already accomplished and proven out early in its life cycle,” said Jeffery in a n e-mail statement released to me this afternoon. “It will effectively clean up the social space on the iPhone, which has become confusing and cluttered to consumers due to the number of social gaming networks vying for attention. ngmoco has anticipated this move from Apple for some time, and is happy to see a cleaner developer and consumer experience on the horizon.” Plus+ incorporates achievements and friends lists across all of ngmoco’s games and other titles. Game Center will do this, too. ngmoco was one of the first companies to try and bring the vision of Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and other unifying online services to Apple’s expanding games platforms. Here’s why Jeffery doesn’t foresee Game Center tearing down what they’ve accomplished so far. “As we demonstrated at the recent GDC [Game Developers Conference], plus+ took a strategic shift in direction a few months ago toward being a service, and less about being a set of social gaming features,” he explained, while noting the recent hire of MySpace exec. Jason Oberfest. “plus+ is all about empowering monetization and discoverability mechanisms for the development community, and we have clearly demonstrated with games like We Rule that these mechanisms work.” ngmoco’s Plus+ might have started as Xbox Live for iPhone, but that’s not the case anymore, a vision no doubt accelerated by today’s news and understanding that Apple will likely dominate the space. iPhone OS 4.0, which includes the addition of Game Center, is scheduled for a summer launch. A private beta is now available for developers. The iPad version of the OS is coming in the fall. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Apple Limiting Multitasking To Just iPhone 3GS, Latest iPod Touch, iPad

UPDATE 12:09 PM:

iPhone OS 4.0 Coming This Summer, Includes Multitasking

Apple has confirmed what we all suspected: multitasking is coming to the finally confirmed iPhone OS 4.0 upgrade. The upgrade itself won’t be available for consumers until sometime this summer (Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not get more specific than that), but Apple claims their long-coming implementation of multitasking is “gonna be the best.” Jobs demonstrated multitasking on the iPhone, but it’s expected for iPod Touch and iPad, too. Essentially, when a user double clicks the home button, it pulls up a dock-like interface (very similar to what you’d see in a normal OS X session) that allows the user to swap between applications that are running. Jobs showed a user jumping from a URL in an e-mail to Safari, double clicking the home button, pulling up the apps that are running — in this case Safari, Mail, ESPN and Tap Tap Revenge — and simply clicking Mail to return to the e-mail account. The company claims their solution to multitasking avoids the common issue with adding multitasking to device: sluggish performance of the device and a rapidly draining battery. How much that claim holds up won’t be known for a few months yet. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter .
