Morning Hangover — An Average iPad Day

The most common question aimed at people intent on purchasing an iPad before it was in the wild was simply “what are you going to do with it?” To be honest, that was a tough question to answer, given so much about its usability was unknown until the iPad-specific App Store launched. Not so coincidentally, App Store’s launch was the same time I decided an iPad might fight into my life, too, and I’ve spent the last few days finding out where an iPad might be useful — and where I’m forcing it. Being able to wake up, pull the iPad from beneath my bed and read the headlines on a properly-sized version of The New York Time s has officially become My New Favorite Thing. Even though the iPhone version of The New York Times actually offers more content, I’m not looking for deep reading with my iPad during 20 minutes of AM perusal, I want the top stories with pretty pictures and readability. Following that, I boot up the NPR app and listen to as many stories from Morning Edition before tossing the iPad inside my backpack, right alongside my MacBook Pro and iPhone. Yes, on my work to work, I end up carrying three different Apple devices with me. The MacBook Pro is my work horse, the machine I use to write stories, do research and everything else in a typical day. The iPad web browser isn’t capable of doing everything that my job asks (I tried to post a story through it using our web tools and failed), so an iPad can’t replace that part of my life. Otherwise, the iPad sits on my desk, acts as a beautiful Words With Friends distraction and a gaming device, as I have many folks asking me what games are like on the device. No doubt, my use of the iPad will slow in a few weeks, once the launch interest on the hardware wanes. After work is when the machine really shines for me. My girlfriend and I watch a lot of movies and TV, but some of it doesn’t require our full engagement with the screen. iPad is perfect for perusing RSS feeds (though Google Reader requires a makeover), catching up on various blogs and websites, reading through social networks and engaging with the web in a way that doesn’t burn my testicles, as my heated MacBook Pro would gladly do. Much of the night is also spent passing the iPad back and forth during Words With Friends games that typically result in my girlfriend soundly beating me to a pulp. The release of more apps will change this usage. But let me be clear: right now,

Tech Review: Apple iPad

Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version Some say it’s revolutionary, others say it’s pure magic. Could it be both? Chris Hardwick and Kevin Pereira give their official take on the Apple iPad, with its 9.7″ multi touch display, web browsing, iWorks productivity software and more, all starting at $500. Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut. What You Need To Know Compared to other devices, the iPad is extremely unique and unlike anything else we’ve used. It’s about the size of a piece of paper (8″ x 10″) and measures half an inch thick. It’s heavier than you might expect. This might make it too heavy or awkward when you’re using the tablet for long periods of time. It’s a good size but you can’t hold it up forever. You have to put it on a desk and hover over it, or balance it on your knees. The touch screen is the most striking feature of the iPad. It’s huge at 9.7″ and LED backlit, so it’s everything you’d expect from a touch screen Apple device. If you’ve used an iPhone before, you’ll know how to use this. Even if you have no experience with an iPhone, it’s immediately intuitive. The screen is multi-touch, which means you can pinch and zoom. The keyboard works well but you’ll have to hover over the iPad to type on it. It has the OLEOPhobic screen but you’ll still get your fingerprints all over it. Overall, we love the iPhone touch experience and this is even better because the screen is huge! For the most part, the iPad experience translated well to the primary features, like web browsing, checking email and watching Youtube videos. The iPad makes browsing the web on Safari exactly the way you want to. Pinch and zoom, large screen and easy keyboard makes this the killer app (though without the Flash support). Lots of other apps like email and YouTube have been redesigned to work and look better on the iPad, and it makes a huge difference because of all the screen real estate. The iWorks apps like Pages and iBooks work extremely well. The battery life so far is great. Other apps available include the NetFlix app, which gives you access to your instant queue and looks amazing on the screen. There’s also Real Racing GTI which is easier to play than on an iPhone, because you don’t over correct on the iPad as much and it doesnt look bad when you scale it. Evernote has been redesigned for the iPad and is more fun to use. Command and Conquer Red Alert is amazing, and is just as easy to play as on a computer. The only problem is that the apps are expensive. Price $500.00 for the 16g Wi-Fi version. Rating 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. ( How do we rate gadgets? ) This won’t replace your laptop and you may need to buy other accessories, like a keyboard. Want something reviewed on Gadget Pr0n? How Steve Jobs Behaves in Public [Nerdspotting]

Steve Jobs handles public encounters with a mixture of brazenness and celebrity caution, according to people who sent us stories about their run-ins with the Apple CEO. Read their tales—and send us yours—below. People began telling us about their Jobs run-ins after our post yesterday speculating that the CEO staged his outdoor coffee with Google CEO Eric Schmidt and that he must have known the citizen paparazzi would be out in force . After all, we reasoned, Jobs elaborately choreographed an earlier visit to the New York Times , even sending advance teams (we hear) to make sure he didn’t have to wait for an elevator. From the fresh reports our tipsters have supplied, it sounds like Jobs is aware of his celebrity and pragmatic about dealing with the effects, but doesn’t allow it to keep him from spontaneous meetings. Of course, it probably goes without saying that Jobs’ trips to malls, newspaper offices and cafés are not particularly interesting in and of themselves, even to Apple fanboys. That’s especially true now that the secretive Apple boss has resumed his practice of public tech demonstrations; Jobs sightings were an especially hot commodity when the CEO was on leave and investors had no pictures to fuel their speculation about his physical health. Jobs’ public encounters remain somewhat interesting, however, because of the executive’s unique stature. No other business leader commands as much public celebrity, and as the Schmidt incident and countless keynotes show, Jobs’ fame can be a powerful tool for shaping public perception. On the flip side, Jobs’ celebrity must be a challenge: His very mandate as CEO is to make sure his company anticipates the rapidly shifting tastes of its consumers. In short, to make sure it does not lose touch with the very crowds that are sometimes poised to mob Jobs. Here’s one story of Citizen Steve from a veteran of one of New York’s Apple stores: I used to work at one of the Apple Stores here in the city. He was scheduled to come in, we didn’t know exactly when. He got out of a town car out front, walked in, and right up to me – shaking my hand and saying, “Hi, I’m Steve Jobs ! Is XXXXX (name of the store manager) here?” When I said he was and called him, [Jobs] said he was going to run to the bathroom first – and went to the customer’s bathroom (which anyone can use – and isn’t exactly the cleanest). He came out, walked right back up to me, and started talking about the store. After about 5 min customers around us starting walking up asking to take pictures, and asking questions, when he promptly asked to be excused and left – back to the car and away. We had all heard stories about his desire to not shake hands (he offered first), his desire to not be in public (he spent his entire time in full view in open areas of the store) and his general shitty attitude (he was super nice and cordial). Just something I thought of when reading your article. All that being said, the company is security crazy. Also, Jobs has been known to go to an ordinary movie theater, though it sounds like he’s not very familiar with the one in his hometown of Cupertino (where he grew up and where Apple is based): About a week before the iPad was officially unveiled, I was in Cupertino walking to my car in an AMC parking lot and I hear someone behind me ask, “Excuse me, which direction is the movie theater?” I turn around and am face to face with Steve Jobs and his wife. Although I was completely stunned that 1) I was talking to Steve Jobs in a parking lot and 2) it was just him and his wife going to a movie (I figured that with his money he would have his own private theater or something), I gave him directions and he was on his way. What was particularly funny about the incident was that in addition to me working very closely with Palm at the time, I was very vocally telling my girlfriend how awesome the Palm Pre is over the iPhone when he approached me. In our last post, we recounted the story of Steve Jobs’ visit to the New York Times (more here ), his exit from the iPad launch and his reported sightings at a soccer game and yogurt shop . If you’ve had your own Jobs run in, tell us about it and we’ll compile your story into a future post. (Top pic: Jobs, by Nonie on Flickr )

Update of Wall Street Journal and Engadget on Verizon Iphone (Iphone HD) Release Date and Taiwan Manufacturers
