Writer-director Shane Black is reportedly in negotiations to direct Iron Man 3 , taking over from series helmer Jon Favreau for the threequel, which is already slated for release on May 3, 2013. But hey, no pressure! Two years should be plenty of time for the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon in six weeks. Besides, Black’s got plenty of qualifications that should inspire fanboy confidence. I already like the movie better. In this past summer’s pretty disappointing Iron Man 2 , the movie opens with Iron Man calmly walking out onto the platform of an open plane cargo door. Them without comment, he jumps out and pretty routinely flies down to the applause of adoring fans — followed by two hours of explosions.

I saw Iron Man 2 last night, and while my reaction to the film is still embargoed, I can at least say that I’m bummed that the cutest scene from the first trailer (the one where Gwyneth Paltrow kisses the Iron Man helmet) is nowhere to be found in the finished product. YouTube user “reubenpac” has provided some sort of restitution for me today, going so far as to insert Iron Man into classic movie scenes he was never supposed to appear in anyway.

It had been rumored for a little while, and now it looks like Joss Whedon is in negotiations to direct Marvel’s all-star team-up The Avengers . (You may remember Clash of the Titans helmer Louis Letterier was also on that shortlist .) The Buffy the Vampire Slayer just wrapped his last gig, directing an episode of Glee ; this will surely prove invaluable when Iron Man leads his fellow heroes in a rousing, Auto-Tuned group-sing of JoJo’s “Too Little Too Late.” [ Deadline ]
