Kenna’s ‘Summit On The Summit’ Continues Fight For Clean Water

‘If we don’t take care of it across the world, we’ll certainly be facing the issue here at home,’ he says of lack of clean drinking water. By James Montgomery Kenna at the State Department Photo: U.S. State Department The stated goal of Kenna’s “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” was to raise awareness about the global clean-water crisis — more than 1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and water-related diseases claim the lives of nearly 4 million people each year — because, as he put it, “What’s more noticeable than climbing a mountain?” In January, along with a team of 300 that included fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch (not to mention scientists, United Nations ambassadors, a film crew and experienced guides), Kenna began his climb up Mount Kilimanjaro , battling freezing rain, gashing rocks and dizzying atmospheric conditions on his way to the peak, some 19,000 feet above sea level . Their trek was documented in “Summit” — which premiered Sunday on MTV — and followed by fans online and, accordingly, awareness was raised. But now that he’s back down from the mountain, Kenna says the real struggle has just begun. Because with no mountain left to climb, Kenna and company are tasked with keeping that awareness alive and, in the process, trying to keep the U.S. government from slashing funding for support of clean-water initiatives. It was actually a battle he began fighting before the ascent up Kilimanjaro even began. “In November, I went to the State Department and Congress, spent time with [Congresswoman] Nita Lowey. I went there to ask them if I was to climb a mountain to raise awareness, would it help raise awareness in Washington to get appropriations?” Kenna told MTV News. “The response was, ‘Well, good luck, because it would certainly be helpful.’ ” So he climbed. And then he went back to Washington, along with a team that included United Nations Foundation ambassador Elizabeth Gore, with the express purpose of securing appropriations for fighting water-borne diseases. “We went down and did a photo exhibition at the State Department to show just how serious this issue is. We sat down with Congressman [Earl] Blumenaur in [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi’s conference room,” Kenna said. “He was one of the first to write [Senator] Paul Simon’s ‘Water for the World.’ We went there to ask hard questions, like, ‘Are we spending too much money on things that are interconnected with the water issue?’ Because water is the issue. “We spend billions of dollars on the prevention of HIV and AIDS, but only hundreds of millions on [preventing] water-borne diseases on other things? And the two issues are related,” he continued. “A woman or a child will walk six miles to get some water, outside of any kind of secure area, and what if one of those women and children gets raped and gets HIV? They will then be taking antiviral medications with compromised water. Or, more commonly, if a child is chasing water, he or she never went to school, never learned about HIV. That same kid will have to take antivirals with compromised water. Basically, how are the anitvirals going to benefit somebody when they’re going to die from water with water-borne diseases?” And while the goal was to secure necessary appropriations, Kenna and his team also prevented the government from cutting the level of funding from $300 million down to $200 million. For now, they’ll take that small victory, but the goal — according to Gore — is much, much higher. “We lose a child every 15 seconds to lack of water, so when we went to Washington, we asked Congress for $500 million in appropriations, because we believe we can end this crisis,” she said. “That took guts and teamwork to do and I could never have done it on my own — none of us could, which is why we went together, because if we could climb a mountain, we could certainly do anything.” Kenna said that the end results of his team’s visit to Washington will be seen on March 22 — World Water Day. He hopes that the State Department will consider what he and the team had to say and that appropriations will be secured. He’s optimistic, but at the same time cautions, “I’ll leave it to them to communicate.” And in the meantime, the fight to secure clean water continues. Both Kenna and Gore are championing a text-to-donate system — just texting the world “send” to 90999 will give $10 to the U.N. Foundation, which translates into 1,000 liters of water, enough to benefit a child for an entire year. And he hopes that long after the memories of his trip up Kilimanjaro fade, people will still remember the message behind that climb. Because at the end of the day, the clean-water crisis affects all of us, even if we don’t realize it just yet. “We as a human race tend to be short-sighted. We pay attention to things right in front of us and, frankly, we miss the plot. We mean well, but we miss the plot. For me, it’s less of an interesting thing to text and donate, than it is for people to educate themselves about the issue,” Kenna said. “It already affects a billion people. And if you turn on the news, you hear about states like California and Virginia not having enough water already. So it’s coming here. And if we don’t take care of it across the world, we’ll certainly be facing the issue here at home.” Find out what you can do to help solve the global water crisis now at the “Summit on the Summit” Web site. Kristen Stewart: A Hairy Situation

A year ago, we asked readers to name Kristen Stewart’s best look. Is she the type of actress that looks best in full-on make-up mode? Or all natural? You can still weigh in on this question . Now, we’re back to follow up on the issue. While the Twilight Saga star might never smile in photos, she does occasionally change up her appearance. Such was the case over the last few weeks, when she showed up in public with dueling hairstyles. See for yourself: We know Twilight fans are busy celebrating the admission by Robert Pattinson that he is “together” with Kristen , but please take a moment to respond to this poll question: Which hairstyle do you prefer?

Jessica Simpson Profile Shot

Personally I don’t find Dane Cook funny at all, too douchely for my taste, but apparently Jessica Simpson does. Here she is leaving the Laugh Factory after one of his shows and giving us a decent profile shot on her way by. It’s not great, only decent because she looks like she’s got a bit of a belly. I don’t know if it’s just the way her t-shirt is hanging or what, but I don’t like it. If she was wearing a bikini top or a latex body suit we wouldn’t have this issue. Next time.

Cap and Trade no more? ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar pull out of lobby group

Before we explore any deep thoughts about why ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) (a coalition of environmental organizations and leading corporations pushing for a cap-and-trade bill to curb emissions of carbon dioxide) we might as well drill down to the basics and remind ourselves about what is Cap and Trade. Amy Goodman explains it as the issue that splits the environmental movement in half. While some say it is a way to tax polluters, generate accountability, and raise money for new technologies, other argue that it gives free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you want Annie Leonard's explainer video on Cap and Trade, look no further. So here is the break down: The Washington Post reports the reason as: The oil giants also want to do more to promote natural gas, which has become more abundant because of recent developments in the exploitation of shale gas and emits half as much greenhouse gas as coal does. The legislation adopted by the House included benefits for coal producers and coal-fired power plants in an effort to secure the votes of key lawmakers. Many natural gas producers think that more should be done for them. In other words, these companies are turning towards an industry that is under regulated and somehow perceived as “natural” or “environmentally friendly”. However, ask the residents who live near this form of mining natural resources about the state of cancer rates, houses blowing up, and lighting their water on fire, and you will be initiated into the world of Fracking. BP's statement alludes to that they are pulling out in part because of their deep care for the well being of their customers: BP spokesman Ronnie Chappell said, “We think the organization has accomplished what it was intended to do. It has established a broad, principle-based framework for climate-change legislation. With the completion of that blueprint, that work was done.” “We don't think legislation pending in the House or Senate conforms with the blueprint,” he added. “A disproportionate share of the cost burden falls on the transportation sector and consumers. As a result, we're going to miss out on the most cost-effective measures, and misallocation of resources could occur.” ConocaPhilips provided the following insight in their press release: “House climate legislation and Senate proposals to date have disadvantaged the transportation sector and its consumers, left domestic refineries unfairly penalized versus international competition, and ignored the critical role that natural gas can play in reducing GHG emissions,” [CEO Jim] Mulva continued. “We believe greater attention and resources need to be dedicated to reversing these missed opportunities, and our actions today are part of that effort. Addressing these issues will save thousands of American jobs, as well as create new ones.” Kate Kenny, a Caterpillar spokeswoman, said the company wants to focus on carbon capture and storage projects, such as FutureGen, an Illinois plant that is partly financed by the federal government. “We have decided to direct our resources toward the commercialization of technologies that will promote and provide sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions,” she said in an e-mail. After reading several articles on BP's website, major news sources, and conservative energy blogs, I've come to the conclusion that if you aren't on the inside track of this issue you are out of luck if you actually want to understand this manuver. So I asked one of my favorite bloggers on energy, David Roberts of Grist, to put this into context and explain what it isn't being said in the press releases.

Will Drake Make The Cut For XXL ‘Freshman 10’ Issue?

Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten talks about the upcoming issue, which highlights hip-hop’s next big stars. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Last month, 10 up-and-coming MCs started getting fresh like it was their first day of school. They had to be camera-ready to shoot the annual “Freshman 10” issue of XXL magazine. The special edition of the publication has become a hip-hop tradition, as they give the nod to 10 mic masters they feel will be the next big stars. In 2008, names like Saigon, Lil Boosie and Plies made the cut, while last year, B.o.B, Charles Hamilton, Wale and Asher Roth graced the cover. Other members of the ’09 class were Kid Cudi, Ace Hood, Curren$y, Blu, Mickey Factz and Cory Gunz. XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten said the editorial staff started deciding the 2010 class two months ago. Besides their own research, they also took recommendations from the magazine’s editors at large and freelance writers. “It’s always interesting to assemble the guys, because you don’t know what kind of vibe you’re gonna get,” Satten said about the photo shoot. “The first [class in 2008], they were kinda brooding. They were kind of boring on the actual shoot. The second one, they were exciting. This year, we didn’t know what to expect from them, because the first two [classes] were so opposite of each other. You never know what you can expect when you get those 10 rappers together. It could be pretty much anything. “You’re not dealing with divas like you normally do with a bigger cover,” she added. “But at the same time, you’re dealing with people who’ve got these insecurities, who are not used to the situation and not as recognizable. You gotta get them to be a bit more animated and be a little bit more interesting so the photos could be spectacular. It’s a little different when you put a bigger star on the cover.” Satten played it close to the vest when asked who some of the names were, but she did say the new set is different from ’09. “Last year, in general, the class was more Internet-driven,” she said. “It was kind of a different class. The office would make fun — it was more of a nerdy class. The rappers involved might get offended by that, but it was definitely to the direction of the Internet audience, the Internet rappers. This [new] class is a mix of that and a little bit more street. And more of hodgepodge.” A question Satten said she hears a lot is whether Drake will be on this year’s cover. Some fans where shocked that was omitted from the ’09 class. But as Satten pointed out, his So Far Gone mixtape came out just about the same time as the issue hit newsstands. “As of right now, he doesn’t have an album,” Satten said of Drake. “But he is technically a freshman to us. He might not think so or think he’s beyond that now.” The “Freshman 10” issues lands on stands in March. Satten said there will be a DJ Whoo Kid mixtape to promote the issue sometime in the near future, as well as a party and a tour with some of the artists. Related Artists Drake

Mars Needs Catholics

The Vatican has hosted a conference to study the possibility of alien life in the universe and its implication for the Catholic Church. The study was part of events marking the UN-designated International Year of Astronomy. The Rev Jose Gabriel Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, said “the questions of life's origins and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are very suitable and deserve serious consideration”.
