Woody Allen Kicks Off LA Film Fest with To Rome with Love: ‘You Be the Judge’

Some were skeptical that Woody Allen would make an appearance at the opening night of the LA Film Festival , even with his latest Euro-whimsy To Rome With Love premiering in the kick-off slot Thursday night. But show up Woody did, with five of his starlets in tow — including Alison Pill, Greta Gerwig , and a dazzling Penelope Cruz — to debut his 43rd feature film with a few charmingly self-deprecating zingers. “I had a wonderful time making the picture in Rome,” Allen said, introducing his film to a packed theater at LA Live with a quip. “That doesn’t mean that you’ll enjoy it.” Allen continued, quietly demurring the palpable adoration of the opening night crowd, joined by Cruz, Pill, Gerwig, and Italian co-stars Alessandra Mastronardi and Simona Caparrini. “I had fun. I was there for three months eating pasta, working with beautiful actresses and scintillating leading men. It was great for me. But whether it came out or not, you have to be the judge. If you like it, I want you to tell your friends and pressure Sony, so they don’t put it in the Witness Protection Program.” [Sony Pictures Classics releases the film in select cities next week.] Allen’s Roman outing follows in the vein of his Oscar-nominated hit Midnight in Paris , exploring the spirit of the Eternal City through four light-hearted, if exhausting and scattered vignettes. In one, renowned architect Alec Baldwin visits his old Rome stomping grounds, running into Jesse Eisenberg’s 30 years-younger counterpart as he falls into an ill-advised affair. In another, a fiery hooker (Cruz) upends the life of a timid Italian newlywed. Roberto Benigni (“delightful, brilliant, sensational,” lauded Allen) shines in his own Fellini-esque tale of an average Roman businessman who becomes an overnight celebrity, enjoying — then bemoaning — the trappings of fame. And Allen stars himself, alongside Pill and a wonderfully acerbic Judy Davis, as a neurotic visiting American navigating culture clash with his Italian in-laws. To Rome may lack the pure magic and cohesion of Midnight in Paris , but it’s more fascinated with riffing on the fantasy that the Italian city inspires. (Critics were mixed following the film’s LA Film Fest premiere.) Among the themes turned over and over by Allen’s characters: Celebrity, desire, and the twin, or dueling, identities entrenched in the very fabric of the city — a place where the ruins of ancient civilization are an inescapable part of the modern landscape, a reminder of humanity’s impulse to reach for greatness, even at the risk of great failure. That hunger for life’s “what ifs?” is, the film argues, as essential as it is impossible to ignore. A starstruck woman ponders the extramarital affair that would make for a lifetime of stories; a mortician seizes the chance at operatic greatness, even under the silliest of circumstances. In the film’s most Allenesque pairing, Baldwin’s knowing John peppers Eisenberg’s Jack with the advice he knows he won’t heed, because he didn’t take it himself as a young man. Their double dose of relentless, self-aware commentary — about life, love, and the wrong choices (and ill-advised love affairs) you just can’t help choosing — speaks to a filmmaker who is all too haunted by his past, yet content to come to terms with the naivete of his younger self. Given how baldly he confronts the funny business of art and celebrity in the film, from all sides — the fleeting pointlessness (and compulsive appeal) of being famous for famous’ sake in today’s reality TV culture, the eternal struggle to balance art and commerce, even the oiliness and pretension pervasive to Hollywood types alike, personified by Italian actor Antonio Albanese and with particular deftness by Ellen Page — Allen’s pre-screening sign-off remained softly humble. “Thank you very much for showing up tonight,” he said. “If you like the picture, I’m thrilled. If you hate it and think it was a waste of time coming, don’t let me know [pause] because I get depressed easily.” To Rome with Love opens on June 22. Read more from the LA Film Fest here . Ronald Poppo Photo Released; "Miami Zombie" Attack Victim Recovering From Gruesome Injuries

Ronald Poppo is a survivor. The homeless man whose face chewed off by naked ” Miami zombie ” assailant Rudy Eugene, is awake and alert and doing well, according to doctors. That said, he will require more surgery, and his face is still in such a state that we cannot even post the newly-released, graphic picture of it here. Jackson Memorial Hospital released pictures of him with his permission Tuesday. Follow this link to see a photo of Ronald Poppo’s face after the attack. Poppo’s horrific injuries, roughly three weeks after the shocking assault on Miami’s MacArthur causeway, show one of his eyes is covered by gauze. The other, lost to the attack, is covered by skin. His nose is missing, and his forehead is a mass of scabs. The lower half of Poppo’s face appears intact. Poppo, who has been homeless in Miami since the ’70s, is covered by Medicare and Medicaid. A fund set up to assist Poppo has also raised $15,000. Doctors said the “extremely charming” 65-year-old man remembers the attack, understands that he is in hospital, and is aware of media coverage . The out-of-control Rudy Eugene , 31, was believed to have been on bath salts and was killed by police before he could eat Poppo alive last month. The medical team’s primary goal to date has been to clean and close Poppo’s wounds, but the patient’s psychological response is a concern as well. “In addition to [surgery], we have mental health professionals to help him with the coping; he’s doing remarkably well,” a hospital spokesperson said. The AP says Poppo, who loves Italian food and can’t wait to go swimming, prefers quiet and keeps his TV off … except during Miami Heat games.

Raffaello Follieri: Released From Prison! Deported!

Raffaello Follieri, who first came to celebrity gossip prominence by being served by Anne Hathaway on a yacht, has served his time in federal prison for fraud. Hathaway’s infamous ex, who pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy in October 2008, will soon walk free. Just not here. He will be released and immediately deported to his native Italy. The former real estate developer, whose schemes allegedly consisted of convincing rich investors to buy historic properties by falsifying ties to the Vatican, will be handed to federal officials who will then put his ass on a boat. Or a plane, more likely. A boat just sounds more degrading. Raffaello Follieri ‘s rep, who met with him at Pennsylvania’s Loretto federal prison this week, explained to the New York Post on Wednesday: “It is my understanding from counsel, that he is indeed to be transferred into the custody of ICE for immediate processing and subsequent deportation back to Italy where he is expected to be released into the care of his family.” “[He] expects to resume his role at the helm of the Follieri Group.” That’s one Group that clearly values its business reputation. Hathaway, who today is engaged to Adam Shulman , called things off with her Italian businessman beau right before he was indicted. [Photo: WENN.com]

Slaughterhouse Prep ‘Real Sexy’ Video With Cee Lo Green

‘My Life’ video is only for the ‘most wildest and most vividest of imaginations,’ Joe Budden tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Joe Budden on the set of Slaugherhouse’s video for “My Life” Photo: MTV News Why shouldn’t Slaughterhouse enjoy all of their recent success? For years, Royce da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I have been putting in some serious work in hip-hop’s underground, not always receiving their just due. Now that they are a premiere act on Eminem’s Shady Records, rap’s most lyrical bunch will take time reflect on the ups and downs with Cee Lo Green in their video for “My Life.” “It’s just more of a rags-to-riches type of story that chronicles struggle, hardship, all of the hurdles that we’ve all jumped and some of the things that all of us have extreme gratitude for, if you listen to the lyrics of the songs,” an expertly groomed Joe Budden told MTV News of the video’s concept on Wednesday while shooting in L.A. On the energetic second single from the group’s upcoming Welcome to: Our House LP, the lyricists ponder their current wins in the face of all their previous losses. Cee Lo belts out a familiar hook over a Streetrunner and Sarom-produced track which lifts Italian band Corona’s 1993 dance hit “The Rhythm of the Night.” Though the newly released track has yet to make a dent in any of the Billboard song charts, it has all the makings of a hit record and has the potential to become a radio mainstay for the summer. It may be hard to picture the B-roll, with all of its green screen, but for the Syndrome-directed video for “My Life,” the planned visual effects will be key in telling the quartet’s story. “Unless you have the most wildest and most vividest of imaginations you probably won’t be able to get it, but he’s doin’ a lot of editing in post, he’s doin’ a lot of camera tricks,” Budden said of Syndrome’s aim. “He’s gonna make it all come together, he’s gonna make it all real sexy and we’re excited to work with him.” What do you think of Slaughterhouse and Cee Lo’s new single “My Life”? Levi Johnston to Name Baby Girl After Gun

Levi Johnston’s daughter-to-be will soon be named after his piece. No, not the instrument that impregnated Bristol Palin in 2008 and now Sunny Oglesby, who is expecting their first child together. We mean a gun. “Breeze Beretta Johnston,” Oglesby announced when asked by Inside Edition what they will name their baby girl , who will arrive later this year. “Like the gun, Beretta?” the interviewer asked, referring to the Italian firearms manufacturer. “Yeah,” the 20-year-old blonde answered, laughing. “My favorite shotgun,” Johnston, who celebrates his 22nd birthday today, added before showing off the “Breeze” tattoo he has on his right bicep. He also has “Tripp,” for his son with Bristol, inked on his other arm. Last month, Johnston admitted during an interview with The Insider that Sunny Oglesby ‘s pregnancy came as a surprise … much like his first rodeo. “It was unplanned. There was a time we went to the cabin and forgot the birth control pills and a month later we found out we were having a baby.” Funny how that works. Twice in 22 years in this ne’er-do-well’s case.
