‘American Idol’ Ladies Do Whitney Houston Justice

Women of the Top 13 mostly overshadow the guys, who tackled Stevie Wonder’s songbook. By Adam Graham Whitney Houston was one of a handful of singers whose voice was so inimitable that “American Idol” judges would often discourage contestants from singing her songs. But the tables were turned Wednesday (March 7), when the ladies of the Top 13 were asked to sing songs from Houston’s catalog. Some were up to the task, including Jessica Sanchez, Skylar Laine and Erika Van Pelt, while others — Elise Testone and Shannon Magrane among them — proved why Whitney is often best left untouched. Guys, meanwhile, dug into the Stevie Wonder songbook, marking the first time Wonder’s songs have been used as a theme since the fifth season of “Idol.” But it was the girls who stole the show, and the season continues to look like it’s leaning in the ladies’ direction. “We might have a sing-off between two girls in the final!” Jennifer Lopez gushed after Hollie Cavanagh conquered Houston’s “All the Man That I Need.” Cavanagh’s performance was a highlight of the night, causing J.Lo to tell her, “You’re the one,” but it was Sanchez’s “I Will Always Love You” — the holy grail of Houston’s catalog — that stole the night and brought the three judges to their feet. “Jessica Sanchez is legit! Yo!” an enthused Randy Jackson beamed. “Best vocal of the night, one of the best singers in the whole competition!” Lopez said she was “speechless” following Sanchez’s big moment, and Steven Tyler — who said his two favorites of the night were “Jessica Sanchez and Jessica Sanchez” — told her, “You just made 40 million people cry.” (Apparently no one has told Tyler about the ratings slip this season, but that’s OK.) Laine’s country twist on “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” was another of the evening’s top moments, with Lopez calling her “amazing” and Tyler saying — as he often does — “that was beautiful.” Erika Van Pelt’s strong, vocally assured “I Believe in You and Me,” meanwhile, gave Lopez “goosies” and had Jackson praising her “unbelievable” tone. Magrane and Testone weren’t as lucky as the other girls. Magrane’s “I Have Nothing” hit a number of embarrassing miscues, especially during the big glory note at the song’s climax. The judges were mostly kind, blaming the mistakes on her nerves, but Tyler nailed it when he said she “crashed and burned in the turnaround.” Testone seemed thrown when her original choice of song, “The Greatest Love of All,” was switched at the behest of mentors Jimmy Iovine and Mary J. Blige to “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” a song Testone griped she wasn’t familiar with before being asked to sing. She was never able to find her pocket in the song, but she was equally undone by her sour attitude when dealing with her mentors and while talking with host Ryan Seacrest. On the guys’ side — yes, there are dudes in the competition this year too — Joshua Ledet turned in a soulful, blazing-hot version of Wonder’s “I Wish” that Jackson called “flawless” and had Lopez saying she felt through him. Colton Dixon offered up a stripped-down version of “Lately” that the judges were all behind, while Phillip Phillips’ “Superstition” was churned through the Phillip Phillips machine and came out sounding like, well, another Phillip Phillips creation. “We need you in this competition,” Jackson told him, complimenting his “alt-indie” sensibilities. Gentle giant Jermaine Jones’ “Knocks Me Off My Feet” fit him “like an Armani suit,” Tyler said, while Jackson said he needs to relax more in the context of his songs. DeAndre Brackensick’s “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” had Tyler referring to Brackensick as a “male Naima,” a reference to season 10 finalist Naima Adedapo, which was apparently meant as a compliment. Resident jokester Heejun Han had a memorable exchange with Iovine and Blige, giving the pair autographed pictures of himself (he gave Iovine a picture of himself frowning and Blige a picture of himself smiling, signing to Blige he liked her more than Iovine) but stood on his own vocally with a confident “All in Love Is Fair,” which was deemed “fantastic” by Tyler. Finally, Jeremy Rosado’s “Ribbon in the Sky” was the weakest of the male performances, with Jackson telling him he needed more “swag” to make the performance believable. Thursday’s episode will pit the male with the lowest number of votes against the female with the lowest votes, and the judges will decide who goes home. Janet Jackson Says ‘X Factor’ Gig ‘Just Wouldn’t Be Possible’

Singer said she’s unable to join Simon Cowell’s show due to scheduling conflicts. By Gil Kaufman Janet Jackson Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Scratch Janet Jackson off the list. Among the many divas who’ve been whispered about
as possible replacements for Nicole Scherzinger on “The X Factor,” Ms. Jackson seemed like the most intriguing. The soft-spoken star has plenty of experience on TV — including starring roles as a teenager in “Good Times,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Fame” — but taking a seat next to Simon Cowell for the second season of his singing show just isn’t in the stars. After weeks of rampant speculation, Jackson told The Insider that she’s taking her hat out of the ring due to scheduling conflicts. Cowell said that he had his eye on two women to replace Scherzinger and his reality TV bestie, Paula Abdul,
as he seeks to retool the show after a less-than-spectacular first season. The speculation mill has spun out the names of everyone from Jackson to Britney Spears, Pink, Mariah Carey and even the late Whitney Houston. While Cowell has not discussed Jackson publicly, he did squash rumors that Beyonc

Conrad Murray Settles Prison Beef With Janet Jackson’s Ex

The grudge Janet Jackson’s ex-husband, James Debarge , was holding against Conrad Murray has been squashed. James Debarge and Conrad Murray are being held in the same prison. When Debarge found out, he was highly upset because he blamed Murray for the death of his ex-brother-in-law, Michael Jackson . The hatchet has been buried between the two prisoners after a conversation the men had. TMZ spoke to James Debarge’s current wife who said her husband was impressed by the former doctor and has “made peace with what happened to Michael.” Debarge also no longer sees Murray as evil, but as a “kind man.” How do you feel about James Debarge calling Conrad Murray kind despite having a hand in killing Michael Jackson? Would you be able to forgive Murray that quickly? RELATED: Conrad Murray Prisonmates With Janet Jackson’s Ex-Husband! Aaron Marcellus on American Idol: The Whole Package?!?

Look, we get why the American Idol judges said nice things about Eben Franckewitz last night, despite his mess of a performance . The guy is 15 years old and adorable. But is there a reason Randy Jackson told Aaron Marcellus he demonstrated “beautiful vocals?” Or Steven Tyler went as far as to say this contestant is “the whole package?” Watching the hopeful cover the Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye,” we simply saw a generic act with a better-than-average voice and not much personality. It’s hard to even imagine Marcellus surviving Thursday’s cut, when the top 24 become the top 12. Are we being overly harsh? Watch Aaron in action now and decide for yourself: Aaron Marcellus – “Never Can Say Goodbye”

‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson Has ‘Crazy Taste’

Fellow ‘Idol’ judge Jennifer Lopez dishes to MTV News about working alongside ‘most positive’ person. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News As season 11 of “American Idol” chugs along, it’s clear that Jennifer Lopez , Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler have found their footing and place with one another. The threesome is already into their second season as the show’s brain trust, and J.Lo is revealing just what makes sharing the judging panel with “Idol” vet Jackson so great. “He has all different kinds of sunglasses. There was one pair where I was like, ‘Those are too big … those are just too big!’ and he’s like, ‘I love these,’ ” she laughed to MTV News during a recent chat about the Fox reality singing competition. “The thing I love about Randy is he’s always so positive, even when he gives negative criticism on the show, ’cause he’s the hardest of all of us.” While Jackson is straight up when it comes to his feelings about the contestants’ talent — or lack thereof — it’s his cool “dawg” demeanor that makes his criticism a much easier pill to swallow. “He’ll straight-out tell you that was awful. We won’t say it,” she said, adding that she and Tyler don’t verbalize their feelings as straightforwardly. “Even though he’s that guy, he’s the most positive and the most great-energy person ever. He can laugh at himself so genuinely at the same time. He’s just an amazing person.” As amazing as his judging style is Jackson’s aforementioned sense of style, which reaches far beyond spectacles. “And he loves crazy sunglasses and I love them on him. Without the glasses, it’s not really Randy — that and the shoes. He has a crazy taste in those things, like a little bit out there,” she said. “Not mad at that.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Lil Wayne and Dhea: Not Engaged, Just Valentines

Lil Wayne claims he is not engaged to girlfriend Dhea , and that his recent proclamations of “SHE SAID YES!” referred only to her being his Valentine. Oooookay. The confusion arose at a Miami restaurant last night, when he paid the staff to slip a mammoth ass ring inside a dessert he had delivered to the table. Moments after the signature ice cream sundae (and ring) came, Weezy then jumped on top of their table shouted to the restaurant, “SHE SAID YES!” Everyone inside the restaurant believed the rapper had just popped the question, as did everyone else later that night, when Weezy tweeted, “She said yes!” Apparently not. Wayne later clarified, “I meant ‘she said yes’ to being my valentine!!! Hahahaha! Y’all krazy!” Not sure we’re the krazy ones here, Weez, but whatever. The sundae costs $43, ring not included. No word on what the ring was for if he and Dhea aren’t engaged, or what happened to that thing in general. [Photo: WENN.com]

Whitney Houston Death Certificate Released, Uninformative

The official death certificate for Whitney Houston has been filed with Los Angeles County and made available to the public – but it reveals very little about the singer that we didn’t already know. The document runs through the basics – name, date of birth, occupation (“entertainer”), marital status, next of kin ( Bobbi Kristina ) and place of death – and also confirms that she’ll be buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. But it lists “deferred” pending further investigation as the cause of Whitney’s death. It’s strongly believed, of course, that Houston died because s he mixed prescription pills with alcohol , but no specific drugs have been confirmed. Autopsy results may not be back for weeks. Below, meanwhile, watch Janet Jackson speak to Anderson Cooper about this tragedy. Janet Jackson Speaks on Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston And Michael Jackson’s Deaths: Gone Too Soon

‘You will always remember where you were … when you heard the news,’ Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson’s death. By Tomika L. Anderson Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston in 1988 Photo: WireImage Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had died in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and ’90s Queen of Pop Whitney Houston . The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis . And while the official cause of death is yet unknown — what’s been speculated so far is that Houston may have drowned in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax — given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it’s hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame. It’s much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston’s sudden death — at the age of 48 — has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished. Even Jackson’s brother, Jermaine — who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away — could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. “They shared a lot of success in the late ’80s and they were great friends,” he said. “I’m happy and honored to have been a part of their lives.” And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson — who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons — Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment. Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold. In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will — stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 Billboard Awards. Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure. “X Factor” mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On “Piers Morgan Tonight,” he said, “She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can’t be manufactured. They’ve either got, it or they don’t.” He added, “You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news.” Like Michael before her, gone too soon. MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. Watch reactions and remembrances at MTV.com. Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page.
