Random Ridiculousness: Horny Turtles Shut Down JFK Airport Runway

Who knew TURTLES were about that life too??? Sex-crazed turtles shut down a runway at Kennedy Airport this morning as they crawled across the tarmac heading for their seasonal breeding grounds. Runway 4L was shut down starting about 9:30 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said. Port Authority workers were still working an hour later to move the slowpokes to safer ground. “We may have a few delays, but nothing significant,” said FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac. JetBlue reported the turtle incursion on Twitter around 9:40 a.m. “Running over turtles is not healthy for them nor is it good for our tires,” the airline said. “Be advised 30 feet into the takeoff roll, left side of the centerline, there’s another turtle,” called the pilot of American Airlines Flight 1009, a Boeing 767 that had just taken off for the Dominican Republic. “There’s another one on the runway?” asked the controller. “Uh, well he was there,” the pilot said as the plane climbed into the air. Turtles also delayed several flights earlier this week. The turtle invasion is an annual event at Kennedy. They’re in the middle of their spawning season, when the females crawl out of Jamaica Bay onto the runway in search of higher ground to lay their eggs. “The sandy spot on the other side of Runway 4L is ideal for egg laying,” PA spokesman John Kelly said. “It is a naturally provided turtle maternity ward. When your airport is virtually surrounded by water, your neighbors sometimes come in the hard shell variety.” In July 2009, a runway at JFK was shut down briefly after at least 78 turtles emerged from nearby Jamaica Bay and crawled onto the tarmac. Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ Is Her Answer To Bob Marley Classic

Songwriting/production duo Rock City say reggae-infused tune is ‘the female version’ of ‘I Shot the Sherriff.’ By Rebecca Thomas, with reporting by Steven Roberts Rock City Photo: MTV News The encounter begins simply enough. A handsome guy walks into a dank club and makes a beeline for the pretty girl with waist-length, red locks who’s dancing by herself. He moves gently, showing only a hint of force when he grabs her wrists and pins them against the wall. But it’s what happens afterward in Rihanna ‘s new “Man Down” video that has had critics decrying the clip since it debuted last week. Rih’s onscreen character strolls out of the Jamaican nightclub with her dance-floor partner pursuing her. A terrifying struggle ensues. When it’s over, his red mesh tank is torn, his cheek bruised, and the visibly shaken pop star is weeping. Rih decides to exact her own justice with a .22 caliber handgun that she calls “Peggy Sue.” (“I didn’t mean to end his life/ I know it wasn’t right,” she sings.) While the Anthony Mandler-directed clip appears to mirror the lyrics of the dancehall-flavored tune, when MTV News caught up with Rock City, the songwriting/performing duo behind “Man Down,” they said the verses were meant to be open to interpretation. “We wanted the song to be something to where everybody had an opinion,” Theron (a.k.a. Da Spokesman) revealed. “Some people felt it was literal, some people felt it was a metaphor.” U.S. Virgin Island-born Theron and his brother Timothy “Don’t Talk Much” Thomas — their Free at Last album is due June 21 — along with producer Shama “Sham” Joseph (a.k.a. Sak Pase), served up the narrative track specifically to let the Barbados beauty tap her island origins in a way that sounded authentic. And in a city like Kingston, Jamaica, where guns and gangs often mar the lush landscape, what could be more authentic than a girl seeking violent retribution for a sexual assault, only to find herself overcome with regret as the singer does in the visual? “When we wrote the song, me and my brother was trying to re-create in the best way possible, you know, like, Bob Marley ‘I Shot the Sherriff,’ ” Timothy told us. “The female version of what that would be.” But now that the siren-laced tune’s companion clip is stirring up controversy, Theron thinks some viewers are forgetting that the song, like so much Caribbean music, is about telling tales. “It’s like somebody wrote a script for a movie and she delivered it perfectly,” Theron argued. “I just think sometimes people need something to talk about, and this is a thing to talk about. … ‘Cause when you listen to the song word-for-word-for-word, if she shot it theatrically how [the lyrics are], it probably would have been a little [more graphic], if you ask me,” he laughed. When we interviewed Rihanna back in November, just before Loud dropped, she defiantly described “Man Down.” “The special thing in that song is the fact that it’s a female singing those lyrics,” she said. “Then you have that reggae thing and the chant; the overall energy in that song is so gangsta!” What do you think of Rihanna’s “Man Down” video? Child Support Rears It’s Ugly Head: ‘Do-Gooder’ City Councilman Wanted For Over $20k In Back Payments

Now, this here is just embarrassing. City councilman Ruben Wills boasts an impressive do-gooder resume: founding a basketball league for neighborhood youth, running a nonprofit group to help single mothers. What he doesn’t mention is that he has two outstanding arrest warrants for pending criminal cases, a Daily News investigation has found. Or that he’s a deadbeat dad who faces a civil warrant for nonpayment of child support. State tax officials said as of Feb.7, he owed $27,493. Saturday, Wills admitted he was aware of the two outstanding criminal bench warrants on cases in Manhattan and Long Island that date back several years, and apologized for not addressing them before being elected to serve his district. “There is no excuse,” he wrote in an email response to the News. “While these events are more than 10 years old, I take full responsibility and I have taken steps to remedy the situation.” Last fall, Wills, 39, beat out a crowded field to win the office held by the late Thomas White, which represents a large working-class swath of Jamaica, Queens. On his Council website biography, he says he became an “entrepreneur” at 21, starting “a home contracting business which became a center of opportunity for young adults, the formerly incarcerated, and other at-risk residents of the community to acquire the job skills necessary to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and prison.” Wills’ home contracting work appears to be where he ran into trouble with the law, a review of court and other records found. In both cases, law enforcement officials said, Wills could turn himself in and resolve his pending charges. They also point out none of the charges is a felony. It’s also remarkable that the existence of the arrest warrants has never been discovered before, given that Wills used to work for the state Senate and was the subject of a recent glowing profile in The New York Times. Yesterday, Wills declined to discuss details of the arrests, instead issuing a statement through his campaign spokeswoman, Lupe Todd. “These misdemeanor cases stem from business disputes years ago and I am regretful that I did not properly address them when they occurred. This was truly an oversight as it was my belief that these matters had been finalized. Nevertheless this was poor judgment on my part in failing to follow up on the full disposition of these matters.” Regarding the child support he owes, Todd said the civil warrant regarding the $27,000 refers to back payments Wills is contesting in court. She said Wills has been making regular payments starting with the date paternity was established. Wills “pays the monthly requirement of approximately $346 plus an additional $250 which goes against the arrears which are currently in litigation,” she said. SMH. Source

Drake nearly found himself in a heap in trouble after making an appearance at the BritJam festival in Montego Bay with Mavado. The event has a strict no-cursing policy which Drake violated. “Everywhere me go, me seh Jamaica to the blood clot world,” Drake said moments after taking the stage. Perhaps Drake wasn’t aware that “blood clot” is considered a curse in Jamaica, or maybe he was just too into the moment to care. In the past, artists like Ja Rule, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Snoop Dogg have been arrested after using profanity in their concerts on the island.  Drake avoided arrest when his bodyguards ushered him off stage not long after the violation occurred. Usher’s OMG Tour To Launch In November

Usher’s 25-date arena tour will start on November 10 in Seattle. By Gil Kaufman Usher Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Usher will reward his fans’ patience in November when he finally kicks off the long-awaited tour in support of his platinum Raymond v. Raymond album. Though it won’t feature Chris Brown as recently rumored, Usher is promising a major show for the 25-date North American arena tour that kicks off on November 10 in Seattle, Washington. “Songs like ‘OMG,’ ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,’ ‘There Goes My Baby,’ ‘Papers,’ ‘Daddy’s Home,’ ‘Lil Freak’ with Nicki Minaj and ‘Hot Tottie’ with Jay-Z have dominated the airwaves since last February,” said Randy Phillips, president & CEO of AEG Live, the promoter behind the tour. “Now is the time for one of our greatest entertainers to go live and we are thrilled to be part of the ultimate Usher experience. Usher is bringing his fans an evening they will not soon forget. This will be the ‘Must See’ concert tour of 2010!” The singer, who is on tap to perform at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards , will be on the road through late December, hitting major cities from Las Vegas and Los Angeles to Dallas, Detroit, Chicago and Boston, wrapping things up on December 18 with a show at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. ‘Lost’ scribe Jack Bender will helm thriller based on teen party game. By Adam Rosenberg J.J. Abrams Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images With his Bad Robot production company, J.J. Abrams has tackled a highly successful “Star Trek” reboot, a genre-flipping giant-monster-invades-city movie, an impossible mission and a handful of the most gripping network television shows of the past 10 years. What’s left to tackle? High school party games! Bad Robot is developing a thriller based on “7 Minutes in Heaven,” The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The name refers to a teenage party game in which two randomly selected participants are stuffed in a closet together for seven minutes, presumably spending their time either making out or staring at each other awkwardly. In the movie pitch, which originated with “Lost” writer/director Jack Bender, the two teens emerge from the closet to find that all of their friends are dead! Bender signed a feature deal with Bad Robot earlier in the summer and the “7 Minutes in Heaven” movie will be his to direct. The next step is to find a writer, and Bad Robot is looking for one now. Bender’s experience as a feature director is limited to little more than “Child’s Play 3,” but he’s got a strong background in television as a writer and director on “The Sopranos,” “Carniv

Usher, Chris Brown Tease Co-Headlining Tour Online

By James Dinh Chris Brown and Usher Photo: Robert Keshishian/ Newscom With their top-notch dance moves and tunes that make the ladies swoon, an Usher and Chris Brown co-headlining tour sounds like an idea made in R&B heaven. And according to producer Bryan-Michael Cox, it may just happen. This news comes just weeks after Breezy’s surprise onstage appearance during Usher’s set at Reggae SumFest. Speculation began when Cox revealed during Jermaine Dupri’s “Living the Life” YouTube show that the singers are planning to tour together. “Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y’all know that, right?” Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, “They might not know that.” But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, “I might’ve just gave y’all some exclusive sh–.” Once word spread that that Usher and Breezy might be planning a co-headlining tour, the trio took to Twitter to respond to the hype. Responding to a fellow songwriter, Cox seemed to backpedal his revelation when he tweeted , “@rchonore86 I was drunk. Lol. Talking crazy. I don’t know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope tho. Lol.” But the R&B heartthrobs kept the idea alive as they asked fans what they think of the possibility of an Usher/Brown tour. “What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?” Brown tweeted . An hour later, Usher’s Twitter message read, “If you could see Usher perform live with anyone – who would it be?” Reps for Usher and Brown could not be reached for comment at press time. Earlier this year, Brown’s U.K. tour plans were postponed because the singer was denied a work visa on the grounds that he is guilty of a serious criminal offense.
