Rubbing The Crystal Ball: Movieline Predicts the Hollywood Year Ahead

Today, as you’re well aware by now , Movieline celebrates its first birthday on these Internets [SFX: popping of champagne corks, the joyous slap of high-fives, the grinding snarl of a chainsaw carving an ice sculpture of Jim Cameron’s bust], and the occasion is being marked with some contemplative looks back at the previous year in entertainment as observed by our bouncing baby e-publication. With the retrospective angle so ably handled by other colleagues, this column’s been tasked with looking ahead to the coming year, and so we’ll gaze into the Movieline crystal ball and try to discern from the murky, flickering images contained therein what unexpected trends, paradigm-shifting events and other assorted happenings to expect from Hollywood in the next 12 months.

Is Kathryn Bigelow a Jobsexual? [On Set Romance]

Journalist Deborah Schoeneman says out loud when much of Hollywood already suspected: Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow —who was once married to director James Cameron —is dating Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal . Some choose mates for congruous sex lives, politics, laughter, or bookshelves. And there’s the jobsexual: a person who either works so much, or loves so much to work that she always seems to end up dating the guy one desk over. (Oscar statuettes tend to shine a flattering light.) Bigelow worked creatively with ex-husband James Cameron, too, including one of her infrequent screen appearances in a music video he directed for an ’80s Bill Paxton band. After their marriage ended in 1991, Cameron and Bigelow would maintain a friendly enough relationship to collaborate on Strange Days in 1995. Now Bigelow’s career is intersecting with her personal life, again. [ HuffPo ]

Academy Awards Fashion Face-Off: Jeff Bridges vs. Ben Stiller

Jeff Bridges was among the Academy Award winners last night at Hollywood’s marquee event, taking home Best Actor honors for his role in Crazy Heart . Ben Stiller did not. But he did receive some laughs (either with him or at him) when he took to the stage dressed as one of the blue dudes from Avatar . The James Cameron film did not win Best Picture, but it did win Best Costume By a Presenter … in our opinion. No one can accuse Ben of half-assing it! It’s no George Clooney and Saddam Hussein , but who do you think was better dressed at last night’s gala, scruffy Jeff or alien Ben? Vote in our poll … Whose Oscar fashion do you prefer?
