‘New Moon’ Vs. ‘Avatar’: Nikki Reed, Ke$ha, Akon Debate MTV Movie Awards Battle

‘Is it a teenage thing or is it revolutionizing-filmmaking thing?’ Tyrese Gibson asks of the face-off. By Eric Ditzian Photo: 20th Century Fox One year ago, the MTV Movie Awards featured a face-off between vampires and orphans , as “Twilight” was up for seven awards and “Slumdog Millionaire” was tapped in six categories. The battle turned into a blowout, as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s flick nabbed five wins, and “Slumdog” was completely shut out. 2010 at the Movie Awards brings us another epic throw-down – this time between the vampires of “New Moon” and the big blue aliens of “Avatar.” Both films are nominated in five categories, including Best Movie, Best Kiss and Best Female Performance. Which one of these blockbuster titans will triumph this Sunday at the awards show? That’s up to you, because fan voting is currently under way at MovieAwards.MTV.com . But fans aren’t the only ones who have a say in the competition. That’s why we asked some of our favorite celebs who they would vote for when it comes to this heated debate: Team “Twilight” or Team “Avatar”? “That’s not a fair question,” said “Twilight” franchise star Nikki Reed. “I think I have to stick with my movie on this one, although ‘Avatar,’ there are no words.” The likes of Kim Kardashian, Marisa Miller and Stephanie Pratt sided with Reed’s choice of “New Moon.” But for every Twilighter we spoke with, there was an “Avatar” fan ready to vote the other way, like Eli Roth and Adam Lambert. Or take Akon, who said simply, “I love ‘Avatar.’ That movie is amazing.” And then there are the folks who haven’t yet hit the cinema or popped in the DVD so they can make an informed choice in the “New Moon” vs. “Avatar” debate. “I can’t vote, only because I’m narcoleptic and I never made it through either one,” confessed Ke$ha. Count Kristin Cavallari among the non-voters as well. “I haven’t seen any of the ‘Twilight’ movies or ‘Avatar,’ ” she said. “I’m so out of the loop with everything!” So which flick is going to conquer on Sunday night? Stay tuned. For now, we’ll give Tyrese Gibson the final word. “Is it a teenage thing or is it revolutionizing-filmmaking thing?” he said. “And if it’s revolutionizing, then James Cameron’s definitely going to take it.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. 7 James Cameron Characters Who Could Fix the BP Oil Spill Overnight

Everybody’s talking about this week’s meeting between James Cameron and a frazzled coterie of scientists and government officials, the latest in a series of discussions to do something, anything to end BP’ s Deepwater Horizon oil spill that’s ravaged the Gulf of Mexico for more than a month. While some cultural observers taking Cameron’s significant underwater-exploration experience more seriously than others, I think the filmmaker has a much more valuable asset worth considering: The toughest, craziest and most all-around resilient character base of any mainstream director working today. Any mind capable of developing such bad-asses is surely one worth turning loose in the gulf. But who among that wide canon might be the best man (or woman) for the treacherous job? Movieline has some suggestions.

James Cameron to Fix Oil Leak

Step aside, Stephen Baldwin and Kevin Costner ! Only one man has the goods to solve this BP oil leak, and his name is James Cameron. According to the AP , the Avatar director met with the EPA today to brainstorm ways to stop the Eywa-harming gusher. As long as it involves a beautiful-but-headstrong female scientist, free diving, and 3-D underwater cameras, consider my ticket bought! [ AP via Wonkette ]

‘Avatar’ Star Sam Worthington To Produce, Appear In ‘Quatermain’

Actor will play treasure hunter back from outer space in sci-fi adaptation of literary tale. By Adam Rosenberg Sam Worthington Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Science fiction was very good to Sam Worthington in 2009. His Marcus Wright was one of the bright spots in “Terminator Salvation,” and he finished the year in grand style, starring in James Cameron’s record-shattering sci-fi epic, “Avatar.” It’s no wonder the actor will make his debut as a producer in an out-of-this-world take on famed literary treasure hunter Allan Quatermain. Worthington will produce and star in DreamWorks’ “Quatermain,” an update of the character introduced in H. Rider Haggard’s Victorian-era adventure “King Solomon’s Mines.” In the original book, published in 1885, the hero travels to unexplored Africa in search of a friend’s lost brother, who was himself looking for the untold treasures hidden away in the king’s mines. The Hollywood Reporter ‘s Heat Vision blog reveals that in the update, Worthington’s Quatermain returns to planet Earth after spending time away in outer space. Humans are gone, but the hero is back for another ” ‘King Solomon’s Mines’-style adventure but on a planetwide scale.” “Quatermain” was first revealed as a DreamWorks project last year, with “Timecop” writer Mark Verheiden penning a sci-fi-angled script. Quatermain has had a number of big screen portrayals, most recently by Sean Michael in the 2008 direct-to-video “Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls,” released by the Asylum, the studio behind “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.” Sean Connery took on the character in 2003’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” as part of a super-team of literary heroes that included Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer and the Invisible Man. Patrick Swayze played Quatermain a year later in the two-part TV miniseries re-telling “King Solomon’s Mines.” Worthington will produce with “Smallville” executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. No director has been named, though the film will presumably be built off of Verheiden’s script. Did you like Sam Worthington in “Avatar”? Do you think he’ll make a good treasure hunter? James Cameron, whose fearless exploits have taken him everywhere from the Amazon rain forest to the brink of war with Glenn Beck, has a new proving ground in mind for his 3-D adventures. Avatar Breaks More Records

Get James Cameron another house! Fresh on DVD and Blu-ray, Avatar annihilated the records for most single-day Blu-ray copies sold — besting previous champ, The Dark Knight , 1,500,000 to 600,000 — and single-day home video sales total. It also sparked a run on Blu-ray player sales, as retailers said that many customers purchased Avatar and a player simultaneously. No truth the rumor that the Blu-ray disc also turned water into wine, but 20th Century Fox does have to save something for the special edition. Be patient! [ LAT /Hero Complex ]

If He Keeps Making Them, Sam Will Keep Starring In Them

Avatar actor Sam Worthington says he is ready for as many sequels as director James Cameron decides on. Worthington, 33, played the lead role of Jake Sully in the movie, which was released last year, and says he is definitely up for a sequel. He told Hollyscoop: “When the boss decides that he is up for the challenge, when he writes it and tells me to jump, I’ll jump.” Worthington added that he hopes his character, who turned into a member of the Na’vi at the end of the first film, changes in the movie sequel.

Earth Day Celebrated By John Legend, Jack Johnson, Others

‘Avatar’ director James Cameron, Sting and Q-Tip are expected at Washington, D.C.’s Climate Rally. By MTV News staff Photo: NASA/ Getty Images For the past 40 years, environmentalists have considered April 22 to be a day of reckoning. Earth Day is a time to organize, lecture, clean up and generally respect the planet — and remind others to do so as well. With President Obama focused on greening the economy by finding more, and better, alternative sources of energy and encouraging Americans to upgrade their old, inefficient appliances and cars, suddenly Earth Day is back in vogue. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Vice President Joe Biden announced this week that the administration intends to invest $452 million in Recovery Act funding to retrofit buildings in 25 communities from Wisconsin to New York as part of the White House’s ambitious plans to cut down energy use and reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil. (Here are some White House tips on how to green your home, work and community.) Although communities across the country will be holding various events to commemorate the day, the biggest gathering is planned for the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, when Sting and John Legend will be joined by the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples, the Roots, Passion Pit, former Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump and Q-Tip for the Climate Rally . Organizers and speakers will urge Congress to pass clean-energy legislation in 2010. Also participating in the event are “Avatar” director James Cameron and civil-rights activist Jesse Jackson. The day’s actual musical event will feature a concert by Ben Harper and the Relentless7, Guster and Alberta Cross at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, Georgia, and a gig by folk duo the Indigo Girls at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. One of the greenest rock musicians, Jack Johnson, will hold his environmental benefit , the Kokua Festival 2010, at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu on Friday and Saturday, with help from supporting acts Ziggy Marley and Taj Mahal. Also touching down in Hawaii, at the University of Hawaii (Manoa) through Friday, is the Save My Oceans Tour , a multimedia event featuring music, film and art installations celebrating the oceans. The tour will also stop at George Washington University, the University of Utah (Salt Lake City) and University of Colorado (Boulder) through Friday and UN Berkeley through Thursday. Earth Day was founded by the late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin to raise awareness about environmental issues and was first held on April 22, 1970. It has since turned into an international event that often features a week’s worth of activities centered on conservation and clean-energy awareness. How are you celebrating Earth Day? Let us know in the comments!
