James Cameron Reveals ‘Avatar 4’ Plans As A Prequel
The demise of film and the seeming triumph of digital has been a hot topic of discussion for insiders and hardcore enthusiasts for a number of years. But Keanu Reeves is taking the topic into the mainstream(ish) realm with his latest project, Side by Side , which bowed recently in Los Angeles and is set to hit cities around the U.S. in the coming weeks. Co-produced and narrated by Reeves, the 98-minute documentary landed the likes of James Cameron , David Fincher , David Lynch , George Lucas , Danny Boyle , Martin Scorsese , Christopher Nolan and Steven Soderbergh to weigh in on movie-making’s (d)evolution. Nolan, he noted, was the most difficult to reach among the people who appear in the doc, which features interviews with 70-plus filmmaking powerhouses. To lure The Dark Knight Rises filmmaker, Reeves went snail mail. “I actually wrote to him on an old-fashioned typewriter,” Reeves told Reuters . “I think he got a kick out of that and we finally shot him in his trailer on the Batman set in LA.” Reeves noted that Nolan’s schedule was “so crazy” because he was in the midst of filming The Dark Knight Rises , but wanted the filmmaker because of his long-standing opinions about the film vs. digital debate, which caught Reeves’ attention in earnest while finishing on a previous project a couple years back. While working on Henry’s Crime , which he also produced a couple of years back, Reeves and the film’s production manager, Chris Kenneally, began talking about the rise of digital technology. “We were sitting in the post-production suite trying to match the photochemical image with the digital image, side by side, and it just hit me – film is going away, and we should document this whole evolution,” Reeves told Reuter. “So Chris and I gradually put a team together to make the documentary.” A champion of film himself, none other than Martin Scorsese said earlier this summer he’ll probably go digital with his upcoming projects including The Wolf of Wall Street . His previous effort, Hugo was a de facto call for film preservation, something near and dear to the filmmaker’s heart. His longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker told Empire magazine at the time, “I think Marty just feels it’s unfortunately over, and there’s been no bigger champion of film than him.” And as Side by Side gets set to expand, Reeves appears to agree that film will continue to disintegrate into the annals of movie history. “Even Chris Nolan admits that film, if not dead, is now on life support, and it’s just going to become more and more difficult to even get film. Personally I’m a big film fan and it’s sad to see it go but the future is digital.” Reeves himself is directing a big screen feature about a a young martial artist set in Beijing titled Man of Tai Chi and he has apparently also accepted – even if begrudgingly – the comparatively cheaper technology. “”We did [go digital],” he said. “I developed this project for five years and we’re shooting on location in Beijing and Hong Kong. Only The Young Heads to Theaters The coming-of-age documentary follows three teens in an economically downtrodden Southern California town. Directed by Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, the film debuted at the True/False Film Festival and later won best U.S. feature at SilverDocs Documentary Festival, Deadline reports .

Here’s hoping it was better than what transpired over the last few days at the box office, where returns ranged from modest to sluggish as America’s families holed up with God and the Masters and whatever else struck their fancies while multiplexes hummed along quietly with a shrinking blockbuster and a few decent runners-up. Your Weekend Receipts 1. The Hunger Games Gross: $33,500,000 ($302,839,000) Screens: 4,137 (PSA $8,098) Weeks: 3 (Change: -42.8%) Spring’s mega-hit crossed the $300 million mark sometime Sunday, while the global tally rose to an insane $459 million. Continued congrats to the gang at Lionsgate, for whom this money will no doubt buy at least 15 new Tyler Perry films. 2. American Reunion Gross: $21,500,000 (new) Screens: 3,192 (PSA $6,736) Weeks: 1 As the American franchise goes, a $21 million opening falls on the low side of a spectrum that runs from American Pie ‘s $18.7 million debut in 1999 to the first sequel’s tremendous $45.1 million bow in 2001. On the bright side, all three previous films grew wickedly long tails here and abroad, pulling in well over $200 million at the end of the day. So sure: It’s not a number you can penetrate a pie with, but history suggests that it’ll get the job done. 3. Titanic 3D Gross: $17,350,000 ($25,710,000) Screens: 2,674 (PSA: $6,488) Weeks: 1 It’s a good thing that James Cameron and Co. aren’t just a bunch of ” greedy motherfuckers ,” because this showing would probably represent quite the disappointment. Wrath of the Titans Gross: $15,010,000 ($58,899,000) Screens: 3,545 (PSA: $4,234) Weeks: 2 (Change: -55.1%) Barring some late foreign-market miracle, this franchise is probably dead: At $200 million to make and market, it should be sitting on a little softer B.O. cushion than $135 million right now. Dare I say good riddance? 5. Mirror Mirror Gross: $19,000,000 ($36,473,000) Screens: 3,545 (PSA $4,234) Weeks: 2 (Change: -39.3%) A better-than-expected hold, but not much better. Critics are overwhelmingly impressed with James Cameron’s 3-D conversion. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kate Winslet at the “Titanic 3D” premiere Photo: Getty Images James Cameron has never been known for taking things halfway, and the new 3-D conversion of his epic “Titanic” is no exception. Cameron and his team spent years adding computer-generated depth to each frame to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. When the director screened 20 minutes of footage for journalists last October, they responded with warm reviews, but now the final product is ready to set sail. Cameron has always stood by 3-D technology for film, through seemingly endless criticism, and now the reviews for his latest 3-D product are coming in as raves. Drew McWeeny from HitFix doled out high praise for “Titanic 3D,” calling it “the very best 3-D conversion of a film that I’ve seen so far.” Though the quality of the 3-D impressed McWeeny overall, he concluded that nothing about the new version of “Titanic” is really that different. “Adding 3-D to that works technically, but I’m not sure it changed anything, one way or another, emotionally,” he said. When converting a film as iconic as “Titanic,” expectations for the re-release can be very high. Lou Lumenick from the New York Post applauded Cameron’s use of 3-D, saying that it even enhanced the quality of the film. “James Cameron’s spectacular new 3-D version of ‘Titanic’ is everything I’d hoped for, and more,” Lumenick said. “He judiciously — and sometimes with great subtlety — uses the technology to make a great film even greater.” Lumenick said he found “Titanic 3D” “less of a strain on the eyes” than Cameron’s “Avatar.” While most 3-D movies come with complaints from the critics, post-conversion tends to suffer a worse fate.
