The Broken Tower: The Case For James Franco’s Feature-Directing Breakthrough

The film : The Broken Tower (2011), available on DVD via Focus World Why it’s an Inessential Essential : Straight out of New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts, actor-turned-aspiring filmmaker James Franco helmed, starred in and adapted The Broken Tower: The Life of Hart Crane, Paul Mariani’s biography of the titular turn-of-the-century poet. Franco’s moving film — his first feature as a director to be commercially released — depicts Crane (played by Franco, of course) as a frustrated artist striving for an avant-garde artistic ideal that he would never fully realize. Crane, an alcoholic bisexual (one of whose conquests is played by Michael Shannon!) committed suicide at the age of 32 before he was able to complete The Bridge, his epic post-modern poem about, well, everything. Franco’s version of Crane identifies his style as a response to T.S. Eliot’s poems. He tells a friend that his poems are similarly reliant on free association, though Crane’s poems are considerably more hopeful than Eliot’s are. While Franco’s public persona suggests that he has become unfocused and uninterested in his own celebrity , The Broken Tower proves that, along with the probably never-to-be-released-on-DVD My Own Private River (a companion film to Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho that Franco and Van Sant exhaustively assembled from unused Idaho footage), Franco has made good use of his time and talent. For example, it’s apparent that Franco heavily researched Crane’s world, though his film exhibits that knowledge in a rather modest way; The Broken Tower ‘s narrative is, after all, mostly composed of dialogue-light long takes where Crane struggles to become inspired while having sex, getting drunk and taking long walks. But the period Crane lived in and the way it directly influenced how he experienced his creative frustrations and ecstasies is also vividly depicted in Franco’s film, too. How the DVD/Blu Makes the Case for the Film : Franco, cinematographer Christina Voros and The Broken Tower producer Vince Jolivette contribute an enlightening audio commentary. Franco’s rambling (though never boring or ignorant) narration takes some getting used to, but his enthusiasm about his subject and research comes through — particularly in conversation with Jolivette about making exterior scenes period-specific or with Voros about shooting in the cathedral at Notre Dame. It’s easy to pigeonhole Franco as a know-nothing art-house movie brat. But if you listen to him talk for a little bit, he does come off as well-read in an impressive and unpretentious way. Other Interesting Trivia : Elsewhere on the commentary, Franco cites Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr as a key influence on The Broken Tower ‘s use of long takes. This is especially striking since Franco also mentioned Tarr as a guiding influence when he recently presented My Own Private River at Lincoln Center’s screening of that film. In River, Franco emulated Tarr’s unique style of anti-kinetic storytelling because he was trying to edit the film as Gus Van Sant — who has also cited Tarr as a source of latter-day inspiration — might have cut it in 2011. But with The Broken Tower, Franco has taken his own footage and shot it with the intention of pacing a completely new film in a style similar to Tarr’s. Franco’s Tarr love proves how badly he wants to be taken seriously. With a little luck, he’ll get the respect he deserves. In Search of the Best/Creepiest Titanic Fan Video of All Time

Say what you will about James Cameron ’s epic 1997 romance Titanic , but everyone in the universe has seen it, sniffled at it, or at least has had its iconic moments indelibly seared into their brains. (Don’t even get me started on the soul-piercing power of “My Heart Will Go On.”) When it comes to Titanic fandom, 15 years of romantic obsession plus the internet have yielded quite the bounty of fan-made Titanic creations. Naturally, with Titanic 3-D steering towards theaters this week, Movieline searched near, far, and all across YouTube in search of the best of them. Go in search of Titanic fan videos and you’ll find more than your fill of amateur home video reenactments and remixes. Apparently anyone with a camera who’s gone on a cruise in the years since Titanic has done some measure of the “I’m the king of the world!” while running around the lido deck (and who can blame them). But not many folks have turned their Titanic obsessions into cats-singing-Celine Dion videos, tributes in LEGO, or… well, just scroll down to countdown to what’s probably the best (and inevitably creepy) Titanic fan clip of all time. Titanic II : If Jack Had Lived It’s the number one fantasy among Titanic romantics: What if Jack had lived? Why did he have to die, dammit! WHY DID ROSE LET GO?? In this fantasy mash-up of Titanic and 2008’s Revolutionary Road , which reunited Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet onscreen, Jack and Rose walk off the Titanic and go on to become miserable suburban marrieds… if only they could get away to Paris, to Jack’s old stomping grounds, like they’d once dreamed! Further viewing: Titanic vs. Inception , which illustrates the popular idea that Jack Dawson didn’t freeze to death one that one fateful night… but rather woke up on the beach years later in Inception . Dead Cat Orchestra – My Heart Will Go On Celine Dion’s heart-wrenching love ballad… as sung by two mewling dying cats. Also see: Cat-Tanic . That one Hanson music video I vaguely remembered this momentous meeting of Titanic ‘s Gloria Stuart, Hanson, and Weird Al from Hanson’s pop culture crossroads. “I’ll never forget that night… it was right after I got my Hanson tattoo!” Sorry for this one. Lego Titanic 3D trailer spoof There are a lot of terrible Titanic LEGO videos on the internet, kids, but this one keeps it short and sweet.

Titanic ‘Still Sinks’ In 3-D, James Cameron Confirms

‘Jack still dies,’ director says of the 3-D re-release which he says ‘reinvents’ the 1997 flick. By Kevin P. Sullivan James Cameron Photo: MTV News When “Titanic” hits the big screen again on April 4, the ship will be changing course and heading directly into the audience. Director James Cameron has been one of 3-D’s biggest proponents for years now and has suggested in the past that any film is open for a three-dimensional makeover. It only makes sense, then, that he put his money where his mouth is and converted his own “Titanic.” Cameron spoke with MTV UK about the process and why the real reward of the re-release is the chance to see his blockbuster on the silver screen again after 15 years. The director insisted that the movie remains as it was back in 1997, except for the added dimension. “It ends the same way. The ship still sinks. Jack still dies. Oops, I hope I didn’t spoil it,” he said. As Cameron has said before, he believes that the 3-D element of the re-release plays a supporting role. He simply wants people to see “Titanic” as it was meant to be seen: in a theater. “I think the first thing you should think of, the most important thing, is that you’re going to see it in a movie theater, which is really fundamentally different for anyone who is under a certain age. It hasn’t been in a theater for 15 years, so people know it from video. But they haven’t taken that ride where you commit to the three hours, and you’re going to go on that emotional rollercoaster, and you’re going to come out of the end of the movie in a certain mental, emotional state. It’s very different.” That isn’t the say that the 3-D doesn’t add anything. Cameron sees the conversion as a way to reinterpret the experience. “The 3-D is a kind of way of doing that, a way of reinventing the film, and the 3-D does add something to the experience that was never there before, an immediacy, even an intimacy, which is interesting.” Luckily for Cameron, he had originally shot “Titanic” in a way that was conducive to a 3-D conversion. “Even though I wasn’t shooting it as a 3-D movie 15 years ago, my particular style is to use wider lenses and to wrap the actors in the scenery,” Cameron said. “Because the ship — I don’t like to use the term that it was a character — but the environment was constantly informing what was happening, the elegance, the beauty of the ship, the gilt-edged luxury juxtaposed with steerage third class. All those themes are really manifested in the physicality of the ship. The style of seeing all of that when you convert it to 3-D, it just has this lucidity. You just feel like you’re there.” Are you planning on seeing the 3-D re-release of “Titanic”? Leave your comment below! James Cameron Reaches, Tweets From Ocean’s Deepest Point

In a milestone of human civilization right up there with landing on the moon and eating 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes , James Cameron reached the deepest point on the planet on Sunday — the Mariana Trench, nearly seven miles below the surface of the Pacific. Naturally, upon reaching bottom, he did what any record-setting blockbuster deep-sea diver would do: Tweeted. Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you @ DeepChallenge — James Cameron (@JimCameron) March 25, 2012 Back from trip to deepest pl on Earth – #oceans hadal zone.Puts a new spin on “to hell and back”. Good to see the sunshine. #deepseachallenge — James Cameron (@JimCameron) March 26, 2012 It wasn’t all good, according to a report today from Cameron’s partners at National Geographic: The expedition was designed so that Cameron could spend up to six hours collecting samples and video at the bottom of the trench. But his mission was cut short due in part to a hydraulic fluid leak that coated the window of the sub’s “pilot sphere,” obscuring his view. “I lost hydraulics toward the latter part of dive, and I was unable to use the manipulator arm,” Cameron said this morning Considering the daunting task of sending humans into the deep, such technical glitches are to be expected, Cameron emphasized: “It’s a prototype vehicle, so it’s gonna take time to iron out the bugs.” And even with the hydraulic leak obscuring the explorer’s vision, word has it that the ocean floor looked better than Titanic 3D . Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ Becomes Christian Anthem

Students at the University of Florida unveil ‘Super Grace,’ an ode to ‘the boys with the true religion.’ By James Montgomery Nicki Minaj Photo: D. Dipasupil/FilmMagic When Nicki Minaj first dropped “Super Bass,” she probably never thought it’d go on to be her biggest hit … and we’re willing to bet she definitely didn’t think it would become an anthem for Christian coupling. And yet, it has. Thanks to some students at the University of Florida, Nicki’s ode to the boys with the booming systems has been re-imagined as “Super Grace,” a contemporary commentary “about the single Christian girl’s struggle to appreciate the wonderful Christian men in her life.” Written by UF student Raychel Manko, and first performed during a homecoming “Skit Night” for the university’s Christian Greek organizations, “Grace” pays homage to “the boys with the true religion … in love with the Lord and done with sinning.” It was apparently such a hit — it won first place at the competition — that Manko and her fellow Gators were inspired to make an accompanying music video . And, oh, what a video it is. In the clip, Manko dons a bright blue wig (a nod to Nicki’s eternally evolving hairstyles), preaches from the pulpit, checks out some like-minded guys whilst praying, spits lines like, “You know I really have a thing for Christ-centered guys/ I mean, sigh, I’m gonna cry” (you can read the full lyrics over on her blog ) and, of course, inspires some rather zesty choreographed dance routines. The video was first uploaded on Christmas and has, to date, racked up just 1,100 views. But in recent days, it’s begun to make the rounds on sites like Buzzfeed, which sort of guarantees it’s well on its way to viral status. Manko, of course, remains unfazed by it all. In fact, she seems more concerned with meeting those Christian guys: as the “Grace” YouTube page states, “Raychel does not have blue hair in real life, and she looks better without it.” What do you think of the “Super Grace” remix? ‘Avatar 2’ Underwater Filming Has Sam Worthington ‘Nervous’

‘I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it,’ actor tells MTV News about James Cameron sequel. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Kara Warner Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News The upcoming sequel to James Cameron’s record-breaking film “Avatar” is going to showcase a whole new area of Pandora. With the destruction of the Na’vi’s Hometree in the first flick, Jake Sully, Neytiri and the rest of the tribe are apparently going to be spending some quality time in the planet’s ocean . And, to try to keep the filmgoing experience as authentic as possible, Cameron would like to shoot those scenes underwater . As an avid fan of diving, this is a passion project for Cameron, though he admitted to MTV News in the past that he likes to keep his work and extracurriculars separate. At least it’s not going to be all new to him, as Cameron previously said that he learned a few tricks from producing the underwater thriller “Sanctum.” The difficulty is trying to figure out how to do performance capture underwater, which is something he said has never been done before. In preparation for the film, Cameron is apparently trying to convince his leading man, Sam Worthington, to go diving with him. “He’s trying to get me to scuba-dive,” Worthington told MTV News on Friday (January 6). “I’ve never been, but he got me the gear and the tanks, so I’ve got to give it a go. I’ve got to get my lessons. I’m a bit nervous.” Worthington’s quickly running out of time to start training, though, as his “Avatar” costar Sigourney Weaver started the rumor that Cameron plans to get the cameras rolling on “Avatar 2” at some point in 2012 . Worthington admitted that he’s a little uncomfortable with the concept of learning how to scuba-dive and shooting underwater. Turns out he’s more afraid of filming in the ocean than he was of heights, a fear he had to cope with while shooting his upcoming thriller “Man on a Ledge,” out January 27. “I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it. I suppose once I’m down there and have done it, it will be [ snaps fingers ],” Worthington said. “I’m not worried about [the unknown]; that’s the exciting part. It’s more the claustrophobia.” But sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the film. Cameron told MTV News that he wanted to shoot in the water because “we’ll have characters that are in and under the water.” At least Worthington has a better sense of how the ocean plotline will fit into the greater “Avatar” narrative than we do. “I don’t know when [Cameron]’s going to start ‘Avatar 2,’ but I know he’s been telling me bits about it,” he said. The movie works two ways, by itself as a stand-alone Ridley Scott-directed movie, and secondly, a sort-of prequel to Ridley Scott’s awesome ‘Alien’.
