REVIEW: Hangover-esque Bachelorette Lets Mean Girls Behave Badly, But Apologizes For It

The course of equal opportunity raunchy comedy never did run smooth. Like  Bridesmaids ,  Bachelorette is a foray into proving that ladies are capable of wielding gross-out humor just as ably as the gentlemen, with the obvious comparison piece being Todd Phillips’  The Hangover .  Written and directed by first-timer Leslye Headland (who previously worked as a writer on  Terriers ) and produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay,  Bachelorette sends its trio of dysfunctional bridesmaids into all kinds of night-before-the-wedding misbehavior, including cocaine use, falling-down drunkenness, physical altercations, promiscuity, theft and general nastiness. But then, as if afraid that all of this misdeeds will drive the audience away, the film tries to add a last minute portion of heart, explaining away the actions of its three main characters as the result of damage and pairing them all up with guys to get them through to an at least temporary happy ending. Sometimes funny, sometimes shrill and wildly uneven,  Bachelorette demonstrates film and television’s continuing struggle to provide a platform for funny women in the realms of R-rated comedy and the tug-of-war between the desire to push boundaries and fears about likability, about female characters still needing to be warm and pretty and matched up with someone romantically. Interestingly enough, the plot is based around the nuptials of a side character who doesn’t fit in any typical category — Becky (Australian actress Rebel Wilson) was the chubby sidekick of the “B-Faces” in high school, the one the other three held in mild, veiled contempt. Now happy, settled and about to marry a good-looking, stable guy, Becky’s unknowingly twisting the knife by asking her shocked friends (not one of whom is doing as well as she’d like in her early 30s) to be in her wedding party. Bachelorette feels at the start like it’s a version of Muriel’s Wedding that sides with the main characters mean frenemies instead of its unlikely heroine. Becky isn’t a major source of mockery, but she’s blissfully oblivious to how queen bee Regan (Kirsten Dunst), trampy Gene (Lizzy Caplan) and ditzy Katie (Isla Fisher) actually feel about the event in which they’ve promised to participate. The tightly wound Regan has a boyfriend in med school who won’t commit and a volunteer job she likes to talk about in which she reads to kids with cancer. Gene downs whatever drugs she can find and regularly wakes up in bed with strangers, while Katie can barely hold down her job in retail. The three seemed a little stunned that life has not delivered on the promise and popularity they showed in high school, and that happiness has eluded them while finding the one in their group they’ve deemed least worthy. Bachelorette seems uncertain as to what we’re supposed to think of Regan, Gene and Katie. The way they act in the outset, with Regan calling the other two to bitch about how she was obviously the one who was supposed to get married first, Gene monologuing about her blowjob technique to taunt a stranger on the plane and Katie failing to recognize Joe (Kyle Bornheimer), the guy who used to let her copy his homework (“I took French?” she exclaims in shock when he tells her) marks them as fairly awful. But the film seems exhilarated by their disastrousness, eager to shoo Becky out of the room after Gene makes a failed joke about the bride’s eating disorder and Katie orders a stripper who calls her by her old nickname of “Pig Face,” so that the three can get down to some serious drug use and then tear her wedding dress trying to fit two people inside it. These are inarguably mean girls, to the point where it’s difficult to invest their attempts to try to fix the gown in an all-night odyssey that takes them around the city and into an intersecting path with the groomsmen (led by a smarmy James Marsden as Trevor). But the film’s need to then turn around and soften them feels disappointingly like an excuse — see, they also hate themselves and think about suicide and are mournful over past abortions! These developments don’t humanize the characters, they apologize for them. Gene’s storyline in particular, in which she reunites with the high school boyfriend (Adam Scott, Caplan’s old “Party Down” romantic interest) who broke her heart, feels lurching and abrupt considering the depth of emotion it suddenly reaches for, a pity considering how smart and appealing the two actors are, both together and apart. There’s something to admire in  Bachelorette ‘s initial flag-planting outrageousness, even if it goes too far and then sheepishly pulls back to a more conventional conclusion. Its contentment with acting out as a joke unto itself means it’s not often as funny as it needs to be, though it sets up and lands a few vicious punchlines — Regan’s triumphantly saving the day late in the film with her bulimia-perfected vomit-inducing technique is a dark joke indeed. But the film would be far more provocative if it let go of the need to always try to shock with content and tried to do so with form instead, and rather than solving its characters just let them be unabashedly imperfect. James Franco Sued For Defaming Ex-NYU Professor Who Failed Him

James Franco may be Hollywood’s most accomplished, out there polyglot , but one former professor isn’t too happy with how the Oscar nominee has spoken publicly of his time as a film student at NYU. José Angel Santana, who was fired in 2011, filed a lawsuit against the actor for calling him “awful” and a “bad teacher” while doing the press rounds for The Broken Tower . “Whoever was in Clint Eastwood’s chair at the Republican National Convention was more present than Mr. Franco was in my classes,” Santana told the NY Post . Oh snap did he just make a Clint RNC chair joke?? I mean, Franco only missed 12 out of 14 classes. Did that really warrant a “D” grade? (Eh, it probably deserved an “F.” Then again I’m no college professor. OH, BUT GUESS WHO IS ? ) Franco supposedly skipped out on Santana’s classes to go give an Academy Award-nominated performance in 127 Hours for Danny Boyle, so I guess that worked out pretty well for him. Stay tuned to see how this one pans out… [ NY Post ]

WATCH: Liam Neeson Says Check Out These Taken 2 Trailers − Or He’s Comin’ To Get You, Sucka

Looks like Taken 2 could be subtitled All in the Family , or maybe Bad-Ass & Daughter . Liam Neeson is back as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills, and based on the plot points covered by the two new trailers posted below, he enlists daughter Kim ( Maggie Grace ), who he gallantly rescued in the first Taken , to assist him in saving her Mom (Famke Janssen) from the bad guys. Turns out the motive for moms kidnapping is familial in nature, too:  She’s been taken by the father of the kidnapper Mills killed back in the first flick. And if Neeson didn’t suck you in the first time around with his unflappable, I-will-make-you-regret-ever-messing-with-me charisma, he opens the first trailer by having some fun with his character’s certitude.  Taken 2 is directed by the memorably named Olivier Megaton, whose credits include Colombiana and Transporter 3 , and we’re happy to see that the script was written by the same team that made the first Taken such a taut experience:  Luc Besson ( The Professional and La Femme Nikita ) and Robert Mark Kamen ( Karate Kid , the Transporter movies), whose Kamen Estate vineyards makes some delicious vino, by the way. Spring Breakers Smacks The Disney (Mostly) Out Of Selena Gomez In Venice

Harmony Korine ‘s Spring Breakers premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival is still days away, but festival-goers in Venice will catch the world debut Wednesday and already the film is making some initial waves with “raunchy” and “raucous” being just two operative words to describe the feature about a quartet of sexy college girls whose plan to rob a fast food joint to fund their spring break getaway goes awry. And that is just the beginning. The film stars Selena Gomez , James Franco , Vanessa Hudgens and Heather Morris. Franco plays their unexpected savior – so-to-speak. A local thug, he unexpectedly bails them out of jail and takes them under his wing and even manages to win them over, leading them into the wildest spring break ever and into a bit more crime. In Venice, Selena Gomez who once starred in the Emmy-winning Wizards of Waverly Place acknowledged that some of her fans may find her role a bit of a surprise. “Obviously I know that coming from Disney Channel gives you kind of a brand in a way,” the 20-year-old told reporters in Venice, according to Reuters . “People do put a label on you. I know that I have younger fans, and this is an opportunity for myself to kind of grow. It is a little shocking, I think, for the younger audiences … but I think it was right for me. I did things I didn’t even know I could do on the movie and I do think it was because I trusted Harmony.” Gomez had apparently been asked to play an even racier character in the film, but opted for the comparatively more staid Faith. The 20 year-old actress said that her character in the film was her speed at least for now. “I just didn’t think I was ready for it, and I do think that Faith is right for me at this time in my career and in my life,” she said in Venice. “Of course eventually I’m going to kind of work my way up to that I think.” Fluorescent bikinis, robberies and hard beach partying aside, The Telegraph said that Spring Breakers actually does not go “far enough,” saying it is just another “mainstream Hollywood teen comedy.” That is a surprise coming from the writer of 1995’s seminal Kids and his last Toronto offering Trash Humpers . Others will undoubtedly have their say. [ Sources: Reuters , The Telegraph ]

WATCH: First Clip From Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine’s Hottie Crime Caper

I hope the action in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers picks up after this scene.  The film, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, is about four college girls — played by Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Rachel Korine and Ashley Benson — get mixed up with an arms and drug dealer, played by a Kevin Federlinesque James Franco ,  after they rob a restaurant to fund their spring break vacation and land in jail. This listless and very blue-hued first clip from the movie appears to be setting up the hotties’ motivation for their lawlessness. Apparently, there’s nothing like the boredom and brown grass of small-town living to make criminal activity sound like a hoot. FIRST PEEK: Spring Breakers from MUSE Film on Vimeo . Mila Kunis Has No Shame [PICS]

So if it’s not shame that keeps Mila Kunis covered, then what is it? Seriously, if you know, please tell us. Mila’s been at the top of Mr. Skin’s Most Wanted Nudes list for years, and while nothing compares to boobs (on screen, that is), her sexy little short-shorts and sweaty rocker-chick look in a new Interview magazine photo shoot is solid fantasy fodder that will tide us over for a few weeks, at least. ” I guess you could say that I have no shame ,” she says in the accompanying interview with her Oz the Great and Powerful co-star James Franco . ” I think that certain things are funny and certain things are okay to make fun of—including myself. I think that you have to laugh at the absurdity of this entire industry and the absurdity of what it is we do. If I didn’t, I’d go crazy. ” So is the Mila you see on screen the “real” Mila? ” I’ve been pretty good about being who I am in the public’s eye. I don’t necessarily put on an act when I go on Jay Leno or dress differently in public than I do in private. I’d like to think I’m the same person, more or less, ” she adds. …Except for the push-up bras, of course. Asked if That ’70s Show and her 2002 Stuff Magazine cover made her popular in high school, Mila says: ” No, I wasn’t, because in real life I didn’t wear push-up bras. They were like, ‘You don’t look like you do in those pictures. This is false advertisement.’ And I was like, ‘I know, tell me about it.’ I don’t even think the boys spoke to me. ” We’re sure things have changed quite a bit since then. Lube up with more pics of Mila Kunis in the garage after the jump!

COMIC-CON: Oz The Great and Powerful Gets A Trailer, Sends James Franco Over the Rainbow

Years before Dorothy Gale plopped down in Oz right on top of that mean old stripey-footed wicked witch, a man — not just any man, but James Franco — accidentally found himself in the magical land, blown into a world of Technicolor whirlygigs and CG fairies by Sam Raimi. I mean, by a tornado. But as Raimi (along with surprise guests Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis ) explained to the crowded Hall H audience Thursday at Comic-Con, his Oz won’t have that much to do with the 1939 classic; for starters, those ruby slippers? Nowhere to be found. “It’s the story of a selfish man. A bit of a lothario, a bit of a cad, not a great guy at first,” explained Raimi of the fame and fortune-hungry Oscar Diggs (Franco), the small-time magician at the center of the Oz prequel. After landing in Oz and meeting three witches — Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) — Diggs uses his illusionist skills to pass himself off as a long-fabled wizard. As in THE wizard. Of Oz. The script (credited to writers Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire) culls information directly from L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, but because of rights issues the ruby slippers made famous by Judy Garland could not be reprised in Oz . Not only that, the film won’t feature the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion. No matter; Raimi’s got plenty else to keep you occupied, even if the first teaser (see below) is a tad underwhelming. Snatches of action and looks at the glam trio of witches feel Raimi-esque, and yet the entire thing feels as if the Evil Dead director were let loose with a few too many green screens in a CG sandbox. The world of Oz looks startlingly like Alice in Wonderland . (Producer Joe Roth also worked on Alice , not to mention Snow White and the Huntsman .) Synopsis: Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. Oz: the Great and Powerful hits theaters on March 8, 2013. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
