‘American Idol’ Season Nine: Neither Lee, Crystal Nor Casey Thought They’d Win

DeWyze, Bowersox and James never thought of themselves as front-runners. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News Modesty is an underrated trait — unless you’re a finalist on “American Idol,” a show that exists solely to discover music’s next great megastar. The whole point of appearing on it is to win, thereby securing a recording contract and the opportunity to become unbelievably famous and wealthy. Modesty, it would seem, has no place on the “Idol” stage. Except for the just-completed ninth season, that is. Because, wow, was this season’s top three modest. At no point during the show’s run did any of the contestants seem to think that they could actually win, and despite the best efforts of journalists — who labeled the final three as “the front-runner” (Crystal Bowersox), “the underdog” ( eventual champ Lee DeWyze ) and “the dark horse” (Casey James) — that never really changed. In fact, based on conversations we’ve had with all three finalists, none of them ever remotely considered themselves the favorite. Not in the slightest. “I never considered myself to be the front-runner, simply because ‘American Idol’ is a show where literally anything can happen,” Bowersox said. “A lot of people that went home we never expected them to go home. … My goal was just to do my best each week and see what happened.” “Not only did I not think that I was the front-runner; I knew that I was not,” James laughed. “A lot of people got into reading the things on the Internet, and I just stayed away from all that. So I don’t know if there was anything that said that, but I never feel that way, and I don’t think it was really the case, either.” “I mean, people were saying stuff like that to me, I’m not going to lie about that, they’d be like, ‘Oh, you’re going to win,’ and I’d be like, ‘Oh, well, there’s still seven weeks to go,’ ” DeWyze added. “I never thought I had it in the bag or anything, but I think you have to have a sense of confidence in yourself, especially when you’re in a competition … [but] being a front-runner or an underdog, or whatever people said, it was hard not to listen to that stuff. You have to ignore it, because it is not a good thing.” That modesty holds true even now that the show is over. Sure, DeWyze is happy he won, but Bowersox and James seem positively giddy that they didn’t. “I’m cool with number two,” the dreadlocked dynamo smiled. “I gave it my best shot.” “I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” the Texas heartthrob added. “I mean, honestly, for me, I’m not going to say anything other than I feel like I’m exactly where I should be.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Casey James Calls ‘American Idol’ Duet With Bret Michaels ‘An Honor’

‘After the stuff I had been through with my motorcycle wreck, we immediately hit it off,’ James says of Poison frontman. By James Montgomery Casey James Photo: MTV News Casey James is still riding high since finishing third on “American Idol,” but his favorite moment on the show actually occurred after he’d been given the boot: his finale-night performance with Bret Michaels . Their surprise duet on the Poison classic “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” was a highlight of the show, especially given the myriad health scares Michaels had survived in recent months . But that’s only part of the reason James will always remember the moment. Turns out, he was unaware that he’d be performing with Michaels until 48 hours before the show aired. “Well, they give us the songs, and they say, ‘This is the song you’re going to be doing, you’re going to be doing a duet,’ and I see the song and I’m like, ‘Why are you having me do this song? I know Bret Michaels is ill, so who are they gonna have sing the song with me?’ I was just very confused,” James told MTV News. “Then, I think it was two days before the show — Bret Michaels, [producers] were calling him ‘rock star,’ that was, like, the code name for the guy I was playing with — and so they said, ‘Rock star wants to see you.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, so I’m gonna meet the dude, or the female, or whoever it is that I’m doing the song with,’ and I walked in and there he is, and I was like, ‘You gotta be kidding me.’ ” James said he was in awe of the Poison frontman at first, but the two quickly bonded … over their respective near-death experiences, oddly enough. “He’s an amazing dude, and I think it says a lot about him, what the music does for him … it’s just unbelievable. And after the stuff that I had been through with my motorcycle wreck [in 2004], we just kind of immediately hit it off,” James explained. “And for him to be coming back, and for me to be on the stage when that happened? I mean, what an honor. I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.” And though their on-air performance was certainly one for the “Idol” history books, James said that the duo’s rehearsals were even more memorable, allowing him to fulfill a lifelong dream to jam with one of his musical idols. “We had a lot of fun in rehearsals, we were laughing and playing,” he said. “The coolest thing was when I first met him and we just immediately started jamming, and we were trying to figure out the arrangement for the song and the amount of time we had … it was great. He’s the nicest guy ever.” What did you think of Casey and Bret’s “Idol” finale performance? Tell us in the comments! Jesse James Attempts, Fails to Cash in on Nazi Photo as Auction Crashes and Burns

Jesse James either has a really poor sense of humor, is in desperate need of cash or both. Dude has been trying to sell the Red Baron replica airplane seen in the background of his now-infamous Nazi salute photo on eBay. While using the Nazi pic as a selling point , no less. The plane is part of an eBay auction operated by West Coast Choppers, Jesse’s company. WCC has even published an article on their website promoting the sale. In the listing, the plane is described as a piece of “pop culture history” due to a cameo appearance in the bottom right hand corner of the Jesse James Nazi photo . The description reads : “This is the actual model as seen in US, People, In Touch, TMZ, etc. Pictures of you with it may be worth big bucks someday so bid to win.” You can see that sucker below … Jesse recently explained on Nightline that the photo as a “joke … that was funny then.” Apparently he still thinks it’s funny now. Then again, Michelle McGee tells us that Nazi pics aren’t racist , so perhaps we need to lay off. Not surprisingly, the little airplane auction crashed and burned less than two hours after the story broke about its appearance in James’ Nazi salute photo. It’s unclear why the post was removed from eBay, especially because the price was skyrocketing from the original $99.99 price, but we have some ideas. The Red Baron replica was among several items Jesse James is hawking online for a “Spring Cleaning” sales event, yet looks to be the only one removed. West Coast Choppers had no comment, however, TMZ spoke with a rep from eBay, who confirmed the post was removed by the seller. Fortunately, they were able to snag this screen capture before the auction was taken down …

JJ Abrams Comes Up with Novel Excuse for Turning In Extra-Long Undercovers Scripts

Cramming enough carnage into one spy-marriage thriller is a chore for any screenwriter, but JJ Abrams’s not in the mood for chores to-effing-day. Instead of opting to edit some of his new NBC series’ Undercovers overlong pilot, Abrams took a shortcut, and a leaked script of the series proves that he and co-writer Josh Reims feel more confident telling you, the reader, how to make their work seem shorter rather than editing it down themselves . Instructions follow!
