Is Joel Edgerton Bourne to Replace Matt Damon? [UPDATE: Nope]

Sinister news in the rumor yard, dear teens: Since Matt Damon ditched the series, Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (of Animal Kingdom ) may be cast as an agent named Martin who was part of a Treadstone-like program in the upcoming Bourne Legacy . Director Tony Gilroy reportedly wants Edgerton for the role, but the studio is concerned about his fame level and potential to star in the concurrently filmed Snow White movie (now that Hugh Jackman has dropped out). I’m personally ready for a female Bourne. Is it too late to suggest Marion Cotillard? In a flak jacket? And sensible trousers? UPDATE : Our pal Jeremy Renner got the part! [ Deadline ]

Hi Hater: Matt Damon Says He’s Not Feeling President Obama’s “Hope” Steez Anymore

Uh oh, President Obama has pissed off “Jason Bourne”… Matt Damon is saying Nope to Hope. In a stinging critique, the Oscar-winning actor has turned on President Obama, saying the Democrat he championed in the 2008 race for the White House has not offered change he can believe in. “I really think he misinterpreted his mandate,” Damon told CNN. “A friend of mine said it the other day and I thought it was a great line: ‘I no longer hope for audacity.’ “ That’s a dig at the name of Obama’s best-selling book The Audacity of Hope. Damon rapped Obama’s education policy as advancing test preparation, not critical learning. “The idea that we’re testing kids and we’re tying teacher salaries to how kids are performing on tests, that kind of mechanized thinking has nothing to do with higher order,” he said. He was also unimpressed with Obama’s foreign policies, especially in Afghanistan. Matt can be salty all he wants to, but he better get used to seeing ol’ Barry O’s face because we believe he’s gonna be back for round 2 in 2012! Have any of you changed your stance on President Obama since his inauguration into office??? Source

Matt Damon Says Future Of ‘Bourne’ Franchise Is Uncertain

‘We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,’ the star says of studio’s desire to re-cast Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Ultimatum” Photo: Jasin Boland/ Universal Studios Earlier this year, fans of the highly successful “Bourne” franchise got some surprising news when Universal announced its plans to make “The Bourne Legacy” with or without star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass. Then in October, the studio announced the next installment would be written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who penned the first three “Bourne” films. MTV News caught up with Damon during promotion for his awards-favorite “True Grit,” and asked the actor whether he’d talked to Gilroy about plans for the next chapter. “I have no idea what he has planned,” Damon said of Gilroy. “But he’s a very smart guy, so I’m sure it’s going to be good. I do know that whatever he’s doing won’t preclude Paul [Greengrass] and I from coming back and doing ours,” he added. (It’s still unclear whether Damon and Greengrass will return.) Damon explained that what Universal wants to do with the films is build a lasting franchise — one in which other actors besides Damon can step into the lead role. Of course, Damon and Greengrass aren’t exactly onboard with that idea. “What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,” Damon said. “You can’t send him on a mission. There’s character development, there’s an arc that the character has traveled through the three movies. You don’t just start over at the beginning of every movie,” he continued. “So I think what they’re looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually.” Earlier this year, Damon said he would consider stepping into Bourne’s shoes again, but only if the picture was helmed by Greengrass. “I love the character. I love the stories,” Damon said . “But only if Paul Greengrass says he will direct again. So far, though, he’s decided not to. I’d definitely say yes if he went for it. I know he would have a great story, and it would protect the legacy of what we created.” What do you think about a “Bourne” movie without Matt Damon? Who should play Jason Bourne? ‘The Town’ Star Blake Lively Chooses Team Bourne Over Team Ben

Actress skillfully dodges our Ben Affleck-vs.-Matt Damon question by opting for Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Blake Lively Photo: MTV News Ben Affleck’s Boston-based, true life-inspired bank-heist flick “The Town.” is a far cry from the first time audiences experienced Affleck’s Beantown love in “Good Will Hunting,” given the new film’s intensity and violence. But the fact that the film is set in Boston and directed by Affleck tugs a bit on our nostalgic Will Hunting-loving hearts. As such, when MTV News caught up with “The Town” co-star Blake Lively recently, we couldn’t help but ask: Back in the “Good Will Hunting” days, was she Team Ben or Team Matt? Fans might expect Lively to side with her director, but she chose one of Matt Damon’s characters instead. “Jason Bourne,” she said, referencing the “Bourne” trilogy’s hero. “I’ve never met [Damon], but he was told of my obsession with Jason Bourne — but not [with] Matt,” she clarified. “Matt’s an amazing actor, incredible, but Jason Bourne? Come on. That’s it.” Lively said she used her admitted obsession with the “Town” director’s BFF to her advantage. “I actually teased Ben. Ben likes to tell the story that one day he was referencing Matt, and I said, ‘Oh, you know Matt Damon?’ I was teasing him,” she insisted. “But I never let on that I was teasing him and just made him feel old.” Regarding her love for Affleck, who the 23-year-old called “Mr. Boston,” Lively said half of the joy in filming the movie was in seeing how much the people of Boston love their successful son. “To get to work with him in a place that embraces him so much, the fact that we had access to Fenway Park, that’s something that’s pretty rare,” she said. “And the resources, the way people opened up their homes to him and to us, because it’s a movie he’s doing and they know he loves Boston and tells great stories about Boston — true stories — and so people were willing to open up to him because he has a respect for their community that they have so much pride in.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
