Will Armond White Write the First Bad Toy Story 3 Review?

Perhaps owed to the fact that almost every other big release this summer has been tepid at best — and jihad-worthy at worst — film critics are treating Toy Story 3 like a canteen of water after spending six weeks wandering through the desert. With 108 reviews tabulated on Rotten Tomatoes thus far, Toy Story 3 has a perfect 100% Fresh rating. They love this thing! Though that should really come as no surprise, considering both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 each had 100% Fresh ratings when they were released. In fact, there is a very real chance that a negative review of any movie in the Toy Story franchise has never been written. But will that change with Toy Story 3 ? Probably, if Armond White actually writes a review.

Late Shift Author Bill Carter on ConanGate, Letterman’s Heirs and the Cannibalization of Late Night

Of all the journalists who covered the dramatic ups and downs of late night television this year, only one has made the genre his journalistic purview. Reacquaint yourselves with Bill Carter: New York Times media reporter, bestselling author of The Late Shift and the authority on late night. In spite of the tens of thousands of headlines already devoted to Conan, Leno and Letterman in 2010, the late night industry is still relatively small, with a handful of hosts, a few hundred employees and several tightly guarded doors. As evidenced by his definitive book about the battle over Johnny Carson’s crown, Carter is the only person with complete access to this cutthroat world. In anticipation of his upcoming chronicle, The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy , which will be published in September , Movieline picked Carter’s brain about another HBO adaptation, a potential Tonight Show down at the Emmys and the reason why Conan might contribute to the collapse of late night.

Are Page Six and ‘Mr. Television’ Conspiring Against Jimmy Fallon?

Wednesday’s edition of Page Six reports that the ratings for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon are down 20 percent from May of 2009 and that NBC executives are “on edge” over the fall. Gasp! Says Mediaweek’s Marc Berman — who actually goes by the late, great Milton Berle’s old nickname “Mr. Television” — “When they took out Jay and put in Conan, they lost a lot of the viewers who would usually have stayed on to watch Fallon. The lead-in is pivotal . . . When you mess around with viewers, sometimes it’s hard to get them back. TV is a very fickle business . . . If there is a lesson to be learned from this debacle, it is that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” Good point, Mr. TV! And good thing Fallon isn’t broken.

Grand Theft at ‘The Tonight Show’

Filed under: Jay Leno How’s this for news … Jay Leno is the victim!

Kevin Eubanks Bids Farewell to The Tonight Show

You didn’t see this on Friday night because you stopped paying attention to Jay Leno a long time ago, but Kevin Eubanks ended his stint as bandleader on The Tonight Show after 18 years — and yes, apparently NBC is folding the five-month sojourn to The Jay Leno Show into Tonight Show history. Who knew?! Anyway, as Leno is prone to do, his goodbye speech to Eubanks was filled with faux-sincerity, but you do get the feeling that Jay will really miss him. If only because it’s doubtful that replacement, American Idol band leader Rickey Minor, will be a ready-made laugh track and comedy foil. After the jump, watch the tribute video The Tonight Show put together for Eubanks, which — surprise! — is actually kinda funny. Well, for Jay Leno.
