So… are The Mysteries of Laura worth taking the time to solve? NBC offered up a special presentation of Debra Messing’s new drama last night, which featured the former Will and Grace star as Laura Diamond, teased by the network as one bad mutha, putting criminals away during the day and dealing with two crazed twins at night. Unfortunately, The Mysteries of Laura Season 1 Episode 1 painted this character instead as simply one bad mother. Watch The Mysteries of Laura Season 1 Episode 1 Online The tone shifted often on the pilot, with its opening few minutes depicting Messing’s law enforcement officer shooting off a criminal’s eat and then going home to find her sons peeing all over each other. (At least they inherited their mom’s good aim!) Then there’s Laura’s estranged husband, Jake, played by Josh Lucas. He has a history of indiscretions and can’t exactly be trusted, but he won’t sign the couple’s divorce papers, either. So Laura will be stuck with Jake at home AND at work because a twist ending (we won’t give it totally away here if you wish to watch The Mysteries of Laura online and see it for yourself) causes Jake to also become Laura’s new boss at work. AWKWARD! The whole show is a bit awkward, really, neither overly dramatic or funny. It doesn’t really know what it is. It also drives home the annoying stereotype that it’s just SOOOO tough for women to work and also act as mothers. Can’t we be done with this already? With Teen Mom 2 Season 5 drawing to a close in the coming weeks, speculation has already started swirling around a potential Teen Mom 2 Season 6. MTV is notoriously mum on these things. It took more than a year’s time for Teen Mom 2 Season 5 to make it to air after Season 4 came to an end. Meanwhile, the original Teen Mom will have been off the air for 2-3 years (!) by the time it returns sans Farrah Abraham in 2015. If that really happens. Any word on Season 6 may be a long time coming, in other words, but the success of Season 5 might lead to a relative rush job from the network. Last night’s Teen Mom 2 Season 5 Episode 23 proved once again that the baby mama drama is only getting more layered and interesting over time. We’re not even kidding. The co-parenting struggles, custody battles and new members of the Teen Mom family coming into the world make for great TV. Does the reality show still resonate with impressionable youths? Maybe, maybe not, since Jenelle Evans , Kailyn Lowry, Chelsea Houska and Leah Messer aren’t even teens anymore, as they were on 16 & Pregnant . At the same time, it’s become a compelling drama as the fab four have come of age, and it’s undeniably true that life hasn’t become any more of a walk in the park. Through it all, these girls – women, believe it or not at this point – are fighting to beat the odds and finish school (Kailyn Lowry and Chelsea Houska). That, or they’re welcoming new children (Jenelle Evans and Leah Messer ), while struggling to make it work with their exes (Leah, Kailyn and Chelsea). The celebrity factor doesn’t hurt, either, from a PR standpoint. There’s no shortage of coverage given the stars’ quasi-famous status, especially thanks to their own Twitter and Instagram feeds (Jenelle especially). It’s free publicity in an era of tight budgets. What’s not to love? MTV has to renew it, right? It has to know that if fans continue to watch TV online , this is a show that could continue to find its niche and even grow its audience. On this week’s episode of Teen Mom 2, Jenelle Evans finally reunites with Nathan Griffith after his stint in jail. Not a moment too soon for the soon-to-be parents. If you watch Teen Mom 2 online or on TV tonight, you’ll see a surprisingly adorable and emotional reunion from the two, who were apart for 30 days. Fortunately, Nathan’s jail time is now behind them, as his sentence for DUI has been served. You can tell he’s elated to be on the outside as he screams: “I’m free, bitches!” Indeed you are. The couple, who recently welcomed son Kaiser at the end of June (see Jenelle Evans baby photos below) also talk about their plans to stay clean. Or, as they put it stay on “the straight and narrow.” Having been through the wringer, both of them could use a little normalcy, even if it’s short lived. While Nathan gives Jenelle a rom-com worthy speech in the car, things weren’t always easy for Evans, or the duo’s dogs, while he was locked up. To put it mildly. Fans slammed her for mistreating the animals, and PETA called her out in an open letter that she promptly thumbed her nose at. The drama never stops. Fortunately, she’s getting a lot of flak for things that happened awhile ago, as Teen Mom 2 tends to lag real life by a matter of months at the least. In the latest issue of Glamour, which has received attention for its depiction of Olivia Wilde breastfeeding her son, Zosia Mamet makes a serious admission: She used to suffer from an extreme eating disorder. The 26-year old Girls star says she was called “fat” for the first time at the age of eight and a “monster” on her brain subsequently convinced her that her clothes didn’t fit or she had eaten too much. Just how bad did it get for Mamet? “As a teenager I used to stand in front of the refrigerator late at night, staring into that white fluorescent light, debilitated by the war raging inside me: whether to give in to the pitted hunger in my stomach or close the door and go back to bed,” she recounts. “I would stand there for hours, opening and closing the door, taking out a piece of food then putting it back in; taking it out, putting it in my mouth, and then spitting it into the garbage. I was only 17, living in misery, waiting to die.” How did Mamet overcome this disease? Her dad finally made it clear what her disorder was doing to her loved ones. “He came home one night from a party, took me by the shoulders, and said, ‘You’re not allowed to die.’ It was the first time I realized this wasn’t all about me,” Mamet says. “I didn’t care if I died, but my family did. That’s the thing about these kinds of disorders: They’re consuming; they make you egocentric; they’re all you can see.” Mamet is now at a healthy weight and feeling better about herself, but she says the “obsession will always be with me,” adding: “For years the voice inside me has gotten louder or quieter at times. It may never disappear completely, but hopefully one day it’ll be so quiet, it’ll only be a whisper and I’ll wonder, ‘Was that just the wind?'” Like other stars before her, such as Demi Lovato , let’s hope this is the case. Jenelle Evans is back in the news again, this time regarding her mistreatment of dogs on Teen Mom 2 and her response to critics of said animal abuse. Seriously. Girl cannot go a week without some new controversy. Concerned viewers saw her dogs – specifically Nathan Griffith’s dog Moogan – basically living in their own filth on a recent Teen Mom 2 episode . Seeing Jenelle drag Nathan’s dog by the collar and lock him in a crate with her own dog, cramming them in so tight that they could barely move? It was hard to stomach. Some people even stole her dog recently, claiming they were protecting the animal; they were arrested and face criminal charges. Thievery aside, fans took to Twitter to express concern. Even PETA got involved, writing an open letter encouraging Jenelle to find a new home for the dogs. “Please understand that dogs are not toys or amusements or possessions just to have around,” the group wrote. “They are full of feelings and needs, just as you are.” “You may not have realized that keeping dogs crated for long periods of time deprives them of everything that is natural and important to them.” “When you scream at them, it clearly frightens and upsets them.” “We urge you to be strong and do what’s right,” they told Jenelle Evans , urging her to “please immediately make the commitment to finding them a new, suitable home.” Instead of being “punished and yelled at for relieving themselves,” PETA adds, dogs deserve to be treated as valued family members, not inconveniences in a busy life.” Jenelle seemed concerned and sincere in sitting down with MTV and said she regretted her dog-related actions, which looked pretty bad on TV.
