Jennifer Hudson doesn’t merely cover the latest issue of Good Housekeeping – the Oscar winner looks darn good while doing so! The former American Idol finalist has incredibly lost 80 pounds, and she says her son doesn’t even recognize his own mother when looking at photos or clips of her former self. “What’s funny is that he’s never known me overweight,” Hudson tells the magazine. “If he sees a clip of the old Jennifer from Dreamgirls , he doesn’t know who it is.” Hudson says she doesn’t torture herself to remain skinny, though. One has to cheat to maintain sanity. “I’ll find a calm, peaceful moment, and I’ll sit back and eat my chocolate, which I make sure is really good quality, too,” she says, adding this piece of advice: “Quality over quantity!”

Queen of Hip-Hop Soul tells MTV News her character in the big-screen ’80s musical is ‘a light in a dark place.’ By Jocelyn Vena Mary J. Blige Photo: MTV News Mary J. Blige is already one of the biggest divas in the music industry, but she’s gearing up to set the big screen on fire in 2012 with the movie version of the hit Broadway show “Rock of Ages.” “In the movie ‘Rock of Ages,’ I play a gentleman’s club owner and her name is Justice Charlier and she has to try to be a light in a dark place. … [My role is] to make these chicks feel better about their lives and move past the strip club,” she told MTV News at “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul,” where she took the stage alongside Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson and Jill Scott. But the movie’s not sad all the time. The singer noted that, much like the stage spectacle the film is based on, there are good times to be had. And for anyone who loved the Broadway show or has watched the “Rock of Ages” trailer , it’s clear that ’80s nostalgia and merriment will be celebrated in abundance. “[It’s] a lot of ’80s classic rock that I’m singing: Pat Benatar, Journey even,” she said. “It’s fun.” Directed by Adam Shankman, the film drops next summer and co-stars Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin. Blige also was just nominated for a Golden Globe for her song from “The Help” soundtrack. Blige’s “The Living Proof” also landed on the Oscars short list for Best Original Song . So, 2012 could be the year that Mary J. takes La La Land by storm. “I’m excited about all of the success because I work really hard,” she explained. “I put time in. I’m the type of artist that doesn’t get anything for free. ‘I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs,’ Dolly Parton tells MTV News before show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1. By Jocelyn Vena Mary J. Blige Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — On Sunday night, some of the music industry’s biggest divas gathered at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan to pay tribute to some of the most-soulful divas in the biz for “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J and Jill Scott all put their new-millennium spin on classics from cities like Detroit, Chicago, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. “I don’t even know what a diva is,” Dolly Parton told MTV News on the red carpet before the big show kicked off. “I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs, strong in their own talent, strong in who they are. … I see a lot of divas around here, and some say I am one, and I don’t know if that’s true or not,” she joked. “Do you think I’m a diva?” Jessie J waxed poetic about the title “diva.” “Sometimes the media can completely misunderstand what the word ‘diva’ means,” she said. “To me, tonight is what it’s about, and every single person’s that been here that’s had longevity, passion, consistent, amazing music that goes around the globe. For me to be a part of it in any way is incredible.” The show recalled some of the greatest hits from divas present, past and future. And it even took time to fondly remember the late Amy Winehouse, whose own music was so deeply inspired by soul music of days past. “She’s in a class by herself,” Mary J. Blige said. “She just broke the mold when she came out; it was like, ‘Wow, who is this?’ And I could hear all of the pain before I even knew she had pain.” While every diva at the show, which airs Monday night (December 19) on VH1, has played a pivotal role in pop music, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy doesn’t believe that many will be as influential as Winehouse. “I don’t think there’s gonna be another voice that cut through the way her voice cut through,” he said. “And I think that alone makes her a legend.” Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine , one of the performers during the tribute, summed up Winehouse: “She was the most incredible artist, and I feel kind of overwhelmed to be doing it,” she said. Justin comes to DC about once a year, so when my friends and I heard he was gonna be here to film the Christmas In Washington Special , we knew we HAD to try and meet him! Two of my friends and I knew which hotel he was staying at, so on December 9th we thought he was landing but he was still in Mexico with Selena, but my friend and I decided to go the hotel anyways. We were just in the lobby trying to blend in when my friend turns bright red and says, “OMG ISN’T THAT ALFREDO?!” I turned the corner to look and it was Alfredo! He was by himself checking into the hotel. When he was walking by us I asked him for a picture and he says yeah, he was so sweet! We told him about the buyout my friends and I were having that weekend and he said he’ll try and make it! The next day, we came back to DC because we knew Justin flew in the night before. My friends and I were waiting outside in the FREEZING cold for about 3-4 hours until we saw all the other celebrities like Victoria Justice, Conan O Brian, The Band Perry, and Jennifer Hudson leave the hotel to go to the Christmas In Washington rehearsal. After they all left, we knew Justin had to be next come out. Then all of a sudden my friend realizes Justin just drove right by us, he didn’t go through the garage he went through the front. We were all heart broken. We decided to go to a restaurant next to the hotel to eat and get warmed up. At about 3pm we found out that Justin was at the Children’s Hospital visiting kids, so all 10 of my friends and I hopped into a cab and went to the hospital. We decided to wait by the exit and about 3:45 we see this black Escalade pulling out and I saw Alfredo’s head in one of the seats and we immediately knew it was Justin! We run after the car and luckily it was a red light so it had to stop! I was right in front of Alfredo’s window so I was motioning for him to roll the window down AND HE DID! Out of nowhere Justin creepily pops out from the back and starts smiling! We were all talking at once and he was trying to calm us down so he could talk to us and he managed to ask a few questions! I reached my hand into the car to Justin and we were holding hands for a good 10 seconds. Then all of a sudden Justin’s like “The light is green I have to go!” Then the car speeds off. We were all freaking out and decided to go back to his hotel. At around 5pm we heard that Justin was at American Apparel, luckily that was like a block away from his hotel so we just sprint up there. There was a huge crowd of people near Justin’s car but my friends and I managed to get in the front right in front of his car window again! Justin rolled down his window and I reached out and gave him a note from one of my friends and told him to read it and he smiled! Then Kenny comes out of the store with all of their bags and put it in the trunk and hi 5’s me before he walked in the car. So the car pulls off and its a legit five second drive back to his hotel so my friends and I ran through traffic and almost got hit by like a million cars but we managed to get to the hotel to signal all of my friends he was coming! Justin’s car pulls into the garage and the gate closed. Selena jumped out of the car and walked into the hotel but Justin came towards us! White Kenny (That’s Justin’s white bodyguard idk his real name lol) wanted Justin to go into the hotel but Kenny was like “No let him be with the fans” . Justin walked over to my friend and took a picture with her and then when it was my turn, I realized I didnt have a camera so I grabbed my friends iPhone and gave it to Justin! We took a picture but then I realized it didn’t show up, I thought Justin was gonna walk away but he noticed too. I was like I have no idea how to work an iPhone and he fixed it and retook our picture! After everything we went through that day I couldn’t believe we finally met him! The next day was the DC Buyout and Scooter showed up! He was really sweet and thanked everyone for helping out and took pictures with all of us!
