‘American Idol’: We Have Never Used Auto-Tune

Controversy over use of pitch-correction software on ‘X Factor’ causes show to release statement. By Gil Kaufman Photo: FOX In the wake of the scandal over the use of the pitch-correcting software AutoTune on the season premiere of the British singing reality show “X-Factor,” the producers of “American Idol” released a statement denying that they had altered contestants’ vocals during the competition. “We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the ‘American Idol’ competition,” unnamed producers of the show said in a statement released Thursday, according to the Associated Press . No allegations had been made that “Idol” had employed the technology, but the blowback from the “X-Factor” scandal was so bad that it seems “Idol” brass felt they needed to nip any suggestions in the bud. As the AP noted, singers on “Idol” are often criticized for sounding “pitchy”; during the show’s most recent season, mop-haired finalist Tim Urban was often so clearly out of tune that his run on the show surprised many longtime watchers. There have been other mini-scandals on “Idol,” such as the admission last year that the group sing-alongs that begin the results shows are lip-synched . But no one has suggested that performances that count toward the competition are tweaked. In response to the controversy, judge and producer Simon Cowell said, “people have got to be able to trust ‘The X Factor’ … we are not faking anything,” and promised that AutoTune will not be used again on the show. The Daily Mail reported that Cowell spent the week speaking to producers of the show — which he will bring to the U.S. in 2011 — and that an episode originally intended to air on September 4 will be shown this Saturday in an effort to move beyond the doctored-vocals scandal. Producers of the show claimed that AutoTune was only used to clean up sound from the audition footage, which is shot in a studio where there are more than 40 microphones in the room. But even a cursory listen to the tweaked bits from last week makes clear that the software beloved by musicians from T-Pain to Sean Kingston was used to clean up shaky vocals from a number of contestants. “X Factor” sources have admitted that AutoTune has been employed in the past as well, but denied that it had been used to make some singers sound better and others worse for entertainment purposes. Though “Idol” producers made the pre-emptivestrike against AutoTune , they still did not pull back the curtain on the most pressing “Idol” issue: who are the show’s new judges? With the fresh faces expected to take their seats after Labor Day, “Idol” watchers are eager to get confirmation on reports that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez have joined the panel. T.I. Discusses His Teaching Stint On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

MC taught a class to fellow inmates called ‘Self Enrichment.’ By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Lester Cohen/ Getty Images T.I. has been evasive in interviews when discussing his jail sentence for felony weapons charges, simply saying he did his time and now he’s back. But on Thursday (August 19) night, the rapper opened up a little bit more about his time behind bars during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Although he cracked plenty of jokes about his experience while incarcerated, he also revealed he taught a class called “Self Enrichment” to his fellow inmates. “In my stay there, while I was there, I just noticed that so many cats what I was around was like, ‘When I get out I don’t know what I’m gonna do,’ ” the Atlanta star said. Tip said he subsequently went to the warden and proposed the class, which he said he hoped would “change criminal ways of thinking.” Kimmel made a few cracks, asking if attendees had to take tests. Tip laughed, but the MC — who also mentored troubled youth as a part of his MTV series “T.I.’s Road to Redemption” — was serious about his message. “It was moreso an open coversation and just comparing points of perception and how you look at things in life,” he said. T.I. also spoke about his forthcoming album, King Uncaged . He confirmed that Kanye West, Young Dro, Mac Boney, and The-Dream would make the cut; recently he said that a previously discussed collaboration with Lady Gaga collaboration would be reworked , or perhaps scrapped entirely. Since December, he’s recorded over 100 songs that were contenders for inclusion on the album. Related Artists T.I.

Mariah Carey In The Running To Be ‘American Idol’ Judge

The singer ‘thinks it will be a good career move,’ source tells E! News. By James Montgomery Mariah Carey Photo: Timothy A. Clary/ Getty Images “American Idol” reportedly passed on Jennifer Lopez as a potential judge for its upcoming tenth season due to her extreme diva-tude. So naturally, the show’s next move would be to begin courting the only star on the planet who could definitely out-diva J.Lo: Mariah Carey. That’s according to E! News , which cites a source close to the negotiations as saying that not only is “Idol” seriously considering bringing in Carey as a judge, but that Carey is definitely interested in the idea. “[Mariah] wants it,” the source said. “She’s seen what ‘America’s Got Talent’ has done for [husband Nick Cannon] and she thinks it will be a good career move.” Earlier this month, Cannon told The Hollywood Reporter that Carey “would love to do” the show , adding that if “Idol” could accommodate her schedule, she would definitely consider signing on. The source told E! that there are still “several sticking points” that must be worked out before Carey can sign with the show, but added that Fox is optimistic that a deal can be struck. If Carey does reach an agreement, she’ll join lone remaining original “Idol” judge Randy Jackson and, reportedly, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler , who, according to “sources close to the singer,” inked a deal with the show on Wednesday. Of course, according to returning “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, Lopez isn’t out of the running yet, either. So, really, who knows what the judges’ table will look like next season? A rep for Carey could not be reached for comment by MTV News, and a spokesperson for 19 Entertainment told us that “producers have no comment.” If Carey doesn’t end up as a judge on “Idol,” the remainder of 2010 is still shaping up to be a big one for her. According to an executive at her label, Island Def Jam, MC will be releasing a new Christmas album on November 2, which will reportedly feature six new songs, plus covers and a new mix of her classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Fans Want Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain As Judges

‘Idol’ followers also name Harry Connick Jr. and Steven Tyler as good picks to judge the 10th season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James Lascina Jennifer Lopez Photo: WireImage “American Idol” fans are very opinionated when it comes to the judging panel. Auditions for the 10th season are in full swing, however, as the Fox hit continues to comb the country for new talent, producers still have not confirmed a final judges lineup. Fans waiting to check out the American Idols Live! Tour in Los Angeles on Friday (August 13), offered suggestions about who should dish out feedback when the next season kicks off. “Gene Simmons would have been amazing,” George Garcia told MTV News. “Howard Stern too because Howard Stern [has] that mouth.” Garcia said that Jennifer Lopez, a much-rumored addition to the “Idol” panel, could have added “flavor, but I heard she was asking for outrageous stuff.” Diane Emerson is rooting for onetime mentor Harry Connick Jr. to return to the show as a permanent judge. “When he helped them be a mentor, he helped them so much, each and every one of them,” Emerson said. “He knew what he was talking about and I think he should become a judge.” Chloe Coleman is on Team J. Lo and said, “Jennifer Lopez would be interesting.” Kayla Erath said Lopez’ star power would mean an uptick in viewers. “I think it would be cool if J. Lo’s on it because she’s really famous and a lot more people will watch if another famous person is on it.” Sarah Garman said that she’s down to have Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler join the amateur talent behemoth “to add a little rock [to] it.” “That’d be hilarious,” Garman smiled. Her pal Jill Davy added, “Yeah, I think they need some rock and roll.” The ladies also said they were up for another buzzed-about singer, Shania Twain, to take a seat at the judges’ table. Garman mentioned that Shania would bring “a little country, a little twang,” to the competition. Davy also pointed out that Twain, who appeared as a guest judge on the ninth season, already has experience. “Shania’s done it before,” said Davy. Chloe Song said that the folks behind “Idol” would probably do well with any of the big-name celebs that have been mentioned as possible additions to the show. “I think Steven Tyler, Shania Twain and J. Lo are all really well-known singers so I think they’ll have really good thoughts and opinions on the ‘American Idol’ contestants,” Song said. Amanda Slater didn’t single out one person in particular but insisted that “Idol” needs someone with the same blunt approach to giving feedback as former judge Simon Cowell. “I think it needs to be someone that can be harsh like Simon,” Slater said. “Otherwise [the show is] too nice. Simon gave the real answers. He was tough but it was needed.” Danielle Slater said that whoever joins the panel next, needs to know what he or she is talking about. “[The show needs] somebody that’s good with music [and has] a lot of experience,” Danielle said. ‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
