At Comic-Con two weeks ago, Peter Jackson speculated about what he’d do with all the extra footage he has shot for the film adaptation of The Hobbit . And now speculation is rising that he’ll turn his two film saga into a trilogy, Deadline reports . Jon Favreau Takes on The Wolf of Wall Street He will play a securities lawyer in the Martin-Scorsese-directed feature starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Wall Street thriller Arbitrage is the fictional feature debut of filmmaker Nicholas Jarecki, Variety reports . Stars Set for France’s Deauville American Film Festival The festival showcases American films and Hollywood talent including Paula Wagner, Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz are headed to the 38th annual event which takes place August 31 – September 9. Jeff Nichols’ Mud will open the festival, THR reports . Leonardo DiCaprio Buys into Car-maker Fisker The actor has become an equity investor in the Anaheim, CA-based car-maker start-up that produces environmentally sustainable autos. Futuristic Action Thriller Looper to Open 2012 Toronto International Film Festival Looper is set in 2072, a mob target is sent 30 years into the past where a hired gun awaits. Rian Johnson directed the film, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. This is the third year the festival has not opened with a Canadian film, which was its previous policy. “Rian Johnson is a film auteur known for combining different genres to give his projects an original spin,” Piers Handling, director and CEO of TIFF commented. “We’re thrilled to have Looper open the festival.” 3 Arrested in Separate Dark Knight Rises Incidents A Maine man was arrested with weaponry after he told authorities he was on his way to shoot a former employee after watching the movie. In California, a man was arrested after witnesses said he made threats alluding to the Aurora, CO shooting when the movie didn’t start. And in Arizona, a man who appeared intoxicated was confronted at the movie causing a “mass hysteria” leading 50 people to flea the theater, A.P. reports . Jeremy Renner, Bill Condon Eye WikiLeaks Film Renner is looking to play Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder through Dreamworks. The studio is also talking to Bill Condon to direct, Deadline reports . Warner Bros. Makes Donation to Victims of Colorado Shooting The amount was not disclosed and the studio did not make an official announcement. The studio said it was working with the state’s governor’s office and would give through givingfirst.org, Deadline reports . LACMA, Steven Spielberg to Honor Stanley Kubrick and More Leonardo DiCaprio and museum trustee Eva Chow will charm the second annual Art + Film Gala, which will also honor artist Ed Ruscha, both who will have exhibitions of their work at the museum this fall, THR reports .
There has been some push-back in the blogosphere over the apparent “genetic enhancement” associated with Aaron Cross, played by Jeremy Renner in the all-new manifestation of the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy , which comes out next month. But director Tony Gilroy assures that the latest film is “consistent” with the three previous installments, which of course starred Matt Damon . Director Tony Gilroy said he knew he could “enhance everything” and still have it be consistent with “what we had before.” He said the project was purposely changed visually and they’re “blowing the doors open to make it bigger and wider,” adding, “We want to keep the testosterone of it, but it demands a slightly different visual vocabulary.” Noted Renner: We had three movies prior to this, we we knew what they had done. [This] was a brand new canvas for us.” Gilroy also gives kudos to Jeremy Renner who plays Aaron Cross in Legacy . “ou want a character that is worth being at the center of these movies. The first reviews of The Dark Knight Rises won’t hit for at least another week, but Warner Bros. keeps putting out tantalizing looks at the Chris Nolan-directed trilogy-ender. If you’re one of the legions of Bat-curious fans out there hungry for new peeks at the superhero finale, you’ll find a host of new images and behind-the-scenes footage in a newly released 13-minute featurette for The Dark Knight Rises . Go ahead, treat yo’ self. Nolan, producers Chuck Roven and Emma Thomas, and stars Christian Bale , Anne Hathaway , and Tom Hardy among others pop up in the featurette to add their observations from the set (many nuggets of which made their way into the 50-page production notes recently unveiled online). In the clip, Nolan calls TDKR a story of “the elemental conflict between good and evil,” before the piece goes on to explore the moral battle lines drawn in the flick and where each of its characters stand. Among the more interesting tidbits: Nolan’s description of his superhero pic as his way of harkening back to the silent film era and the epic scale filmmaking of olde: massive sets, armies of extras, spectacle cinema at its burliest. Watch as Nolan gives direction thousands of feet in the air to four stunt men dangling from a piece of airborne fuselage, or builds a fake football field on top of Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field for that impressive destruction sequence, or orchestrates a full-on Wall Street brawl, and you see the kind of experience he’s talking about. The Dark Knight Rises rises on July 20.
Well, it’s certainly great to be cast in a hit franchise that producers are itching to see the good times roll on. Scarlett Johansson ‘s portrayal as the Black Widow in Marvel’s The Avengers was one component in a half-dozen super-heroes that has brought in over $1.45 billion since its release in late Spring. With money like that rolling in, no point in jiggering with a winning formula. And to keep the good times going, the producers have offered up a record-breaking paycheck for Johansson to reprise her super-hero role. The Hollywood star has been offered a cool $20 million in order to lure her back in the skin-tight black suit for more flips, punches and acrobatics for future adoring audiences in the franchise’s next installment, according to the New York Post . That is “slightly” more than the $19 million Angelina Jolie reportedly received for her turn in The Tourist If that pans out, that will be quite a pay raise from the current film, which is the biggest of the summer tentpoles so far. According to The Hollywood Reporter in May she made between $4 – 6 million plus bonuses, similar to Samuel L. Jackson, but much less than Robert Downey, Jr.’s reported take (Chris Hemsworth, Chis Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo made about half that). Last month, Forbes magazine dubbed Kristen Stewart the highest paid actress in Hollywood between her Twilight and Snow White and the Huntsman gigs. The two made her a celestial $34.5 million between May 2011 and May 2012. It’s of course no secret that Jeremy Renner is the new face of the Bourne franchise, playing Aaron Cross, a new character in a parallel story to The Bourne Ultimatum . But could Matt Damon possibly team up with Renner in future installments of the story? Yes says the producer of Legacy . The Bourne Legacy producer told Empire that “all possibilities” are open. “You see there are several different programs in the movie with different skill sets,” said producer Frank Marshall. “All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.” EW notes that Damon reprising his Jason Bourne character could be complicated, however, because of his loyalty to Bourne director Paul Greengrass and the actor had a public spat with Bourne creator Tony Gilroy last December. Sullivan Jeremy Renner in “Bourne Legacy” Photo: Universal Pictures Of all the summer’s potential blockbusters, ” The Bourne Legacy ,” the Matt Damon -less continuation of the spy series, has the most to prove. Series tend not to fare well once the star exits, but the latest trailer for “The Bourne Legacy” is making us believe that it could buck the trend. Here are our five key scenes from the new “Bourne Legacy” trailer. Weisz’s Role Revealed Until now, most of the promo material has focused squarely on Jeremy Renner ‘s Aaron Cross and how there was “never just one.” One of the first things this full trailer does is formally introduce us to Marta, the doctor Rachel Weisz plays in the film. (Her hand appeared briefly in the first trailer.) When Edward Norton’s Agent Byer decided to liquidate the operation, both Marta and Cross find themselves in harm’s way. That’s the set-up that eventually brings them together to go on the run. Connections to the Past Perhaps the most intriguing element of the new trailer — besides how badass Renner is — has to be the clear connections to the previous film, “The Bourne Ultimatum.” Both Corey Johnson, who plays the government crony, and Paddy Considine, who didn’t survive the events of “Ultimatum,” show up in the trailer. It appears that the events of “Ultimatum” and Bourne’s appearance in Manhattan spur the events of “Legacy.” Jason Bourne Again Speaking of Jason Bourne, there’s Matt Damon’s face right there in the trailer. The actor has made it clear that he himself won’t appear in the newest addition to the series he led through three films, but his headshot does briefly appear on a newscast in the trailer. Director Tony Gilroy told us during our Summer Movie Preview that Bourne’s presence would be felt in the early parts of the “Legacy.” “What happens in ‘Ultimatum’ is really the spark that’s blowing open the door to this movie because the Jason Bourne story is exploding out into the public,” he said. “Being impossible to conceal any further is causing problems for this much larger conspiracy. ‘Ultimatum’ plays in the background of the very beginning of this film.” Agent Aaron “Moto” Cross As with the teaser trailer, a good portion of the full trailer focuses on the chromosomal enhancements that have been made to Aaron Cross. He heals quickly, and he can grind a railing with a freakin’ motocross bike. Was one of the “inconsistencies” within Treadstone that the characters talk about in the trailer the inability to grind a railing with a freakin’ motocross bike? Matt Who? If this trailer does one thing particularly well, it silences all of Renner’s doubters. His action on display here is definitely on par with the kung-fu antics of Matt Damon. Whether he’s on the bike or sliding between buildings or emerging from freezing water with a full beard, Renner looks poised to take the reins in style.
