Ninja Please: Acura Denies Knowing Anything About The Racist “Not Too Dark” Casting Sheet, But Issues Full Apology Anyway

GTFOHWTBS! Acura Denies Knowledge Of Racist Cast Sheet, But Offers Apology According to TMZ reports: Acura has issued a full-on apology … after we ran a story that the car company’s ad people sought an African American actor to play a car dealer who was “not too dark.” The commercial — which featured Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno and ran during the Super Bowl — was cast by an agency that sent out a casting sheet, looking for a “nice looking, friendly, not too dark” African American actor to play the role of dealer. Acura just issued this statement: “We apologize to anyone offended by the language on the casting sheet used in the selection of actors for one of our commercials.” The car company added, “We sought to cast an African-American in a prominent role in the commercial, and we made our selection based on the fact that he was the most talented actor.” As for the language “not too dark,” Acura says, “The casting sheet was only now brought to our attention. We are taking appropriate measures to ensure that such language is not used again in association with any work performed on behalf of our brand.” Do you believe Acura’s sob story or do you plan on setting fire to every one of their crappy cars that you see? Joely Richardson on Anonymous, Playing Elizabeth and the Trouble With Greenscreen

Sure, it’s a tough sell. But Anonymous has plenty going for it both behind the camera (director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter John Orloff posit the legitimacy of Shakespeare) and in front of it as well, where a sterling cast including Rhys Ifans , David Thewlis, Mark Rylance and the estimable mother-daughter combo of Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson — playing Queen Elizabeth I some 40 years apart — dig into the historical, political and romantic intrigues with relish.

Twit Wit: 5 Best Tweets About Puss in Boots, In Time and Rum Diary

Between Puss in Boots , In Time , and Rum Diary , I didn’t see much reason to fork over $13 at the movies this weekend. (Though I did see Like Crazy — or as I like to call it, Jennifer Lawrence Thanklessly Pouts in a Supporting Role .) Instead of paying up, let’s read up on Twitter’s feelings about these three new films. Prepare to have mixed feelings about Justin Timberlake by the time we hit #1.

Jerry Seinfeld Bails on Charity Event; Donald Trump Goes OFF on Comedian

Donald Trump is not a big fan of Jerry Seinfeld after the comedian reportedly pulled out from an event appearance for the Donald’s son’s charity. Seinfeld was scheduled to attend a September 13 event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Eric Trump Foundation, but he canceled. According to reports, Jerry bailed based on Trump’s remarks about President Obama , which didn’t sit well with The Donald for a variety of reasons. “I just learned you canceled a show for my son’s charity,” Donald Trump wrote to Seinfeld in an open letter, accusing him of backing out simply: “Because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader.” Trump, who is considering a 2012 presidential run, didn’t stop there. “We don’t care that you broke your commitment,” he continued, “Even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager previously and clearly stated you are ‘truly a man of his word.'” Trump then took a shot at Seinfeld’s NBC show, The Marriage Ref . “What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, ‘The Marriage Ref,’ even though I thought it was absolutely terrible.” “Despite its poor ratings, I didn’t cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did.” A rep for Seinfeld said he agreed to appear at the event before Trump began questioning the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate. However, “Jerry has grown increasingly uncomfortable” with the Apprentice head honcho. “Jerry … feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse,” said the rep. “He has respectfully withdrawn from the event, but is making a contribution both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to [St. Jude].” Bret Micheals is slated to fill Seinfeld’s place, the rocker said in a statement. “Donald Trump and his family have been wonderful to me and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is one of my favorite charities, so I’m honored to have been asked by Eric and the rest of the Trump family to be a part of this event,” he said. “We should never allow the spirit of generosity to be overshadowed by divisive political beliefs,” Bret added in a dig at Seinfeld, “and when it comes to saving the life of a child, there is absolutely no room for political rhetoric.”

Remembering Bill Erwin, the ‘Old Man’ from Seinfeld

Admittedly, when I’m flipping through channels and come across the episode of Seinfeld titled “The Old Man,” I never even considered the possibility that the old man in question in this episode, played by Bill Erwin, was still alive. This episode aired in 1993! And Erwin wasn’t someone who just looked old like Wilford Brimley (fun fact: This year, Tom Cruise, the guy filming a new Mission: Impossible movie, will be as old as Brimley was when he filmed Cocoon ) — Erwin was almost 80 when he filmed his role. Sadly, Erwin passed away this past week at the age of 96, but he leaves a treasure trove of popular culture appearances behind.

Bill Erwin, ‘Seinfeld’ Actor, Dies At 96

The veteran character actor received an Emmy nomination for portraying a crotchety shut-in on a 1993 episode of the sitcom. By Eric Ditzian Bill Erwin as Sid Fields in “Seinfeld” Photo: Sony Pictures Television Bill Erwin, an actor best known for his Emmy-nominated turn as a crotchety old man on “Seinfeld,” died at his home in Studio City, California, on Wednesday at 96 of age-related causes, the Los Angeles Times reported . A well-respected character actor whose career spanned films, television and the stage, Erwin starred in a 1993 episode of “Seinfeld,” playing an elderly man named Sid Fields with whom Jerry Seinfeld volunteers to spend time. Erwin’s portrayal of the foul-mouthed, paranoid shut-in became one of the more memorable guest spots in the show’s history. Fields is convinced that the CIA is after him, his maid is stealing his money and Jerry has come to kill him. “I wasn’t born yesterday,” Fields says in the episode. “I might drop dead today, but I sure as hell wasn’t born yesterday.” Erwin began his career in Hollywood in the early 1950s, popping up in roles on television shows like “I Love Lucy,” “Perry Mason” and “Leave It to Beaver.” In 1958 he appeared opposite Jack Nicholson in the movie “The Cry Baby Killer,” playing Nicholson’s father. He went on to amass credits on the stage, winning a 1983 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for “Old Friends,” and in TV programs such as “The Twilight Zone,” “Gunsmoke,” “The Golden Girls,” “Growing Pains” and “Who’s the Boss?” In 1980, Erwin played a bellman, to great popular acclaim, in “Somewhere in Time,” a time-travel drama starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. But it was his irascible “Seinfeld” appearance that remains his best-remembered entertainment moment. He received an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category but lost out to David Clennon, who won for his turn on HBO’s “Dream On.”
