The 2010 Video Music Awards just got bigger, with the addition of Ush to the list of performers at the September 12 show, as well as Paramore, who are slated to give a special performance during the event hosted by “Chelsea Lately” star comedian Chelsea Handler . “It is an honor to once again be a part of the MTV Video Music Awards,” said Usher in a statement announcing his first performance at the VMAs since a rain-soaked trip through “Yeah!” back in 2004 . “I can’t wait to perform for my fans all around the world who have helped to make this album a success and my being here possible. You never know what’s gonna happen on an MTV VMA stage. … I look forward to making it a night to remember.” Usher, who just this week dropped the sequel to his hit Raymond v. New Social Network Teaser: Sony Finally Stops Its Relentless Detagging

It may not be the imminent full trailer , but the second teaser for David Fincher’s The Social Network is so clever (and so much better than the first one ) that it’s been frustrating how determined Sony was to stamp it out whenever it popped up online this week. Finally, now that the NYFF -tied announcement about the film has been made, the studio has finally given the teaser its official online unveiling. Watch, enjoy, and “like” it.

Andrew Garfield’s Journey Toward Spider-Man

Young actor’s life will never be the same following director Marc Webb’s choosing him as the new Spider-Man. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Garfield Photo: Jon Furniss/ Getty Images On Thursday night in Cancun, Mexico, new “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb and his producers took the stage at a press event to make a long-awaited announcement — one feverishly anticipated and debated since the collapse of Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” in January: the name of the new Spider-Man . “Though his name may be new to many, those who have seen his work will know this young man embodies an exceedingly rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity,” Webb said onstage . “Without further ado, meet your new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield.” And with that, the 26-year-old Garfield walked onto the stage to a chorus of applause, his life never to be the same again. For while he does have a significant filmography to his name, he’s never experienced anything that can compare to being the face of a blockbuster comic-book franchise. Born in Los Angeles, he was raised outside London and got his start as an actor on the stage. In 2006, he was dubbed outstanding newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his West End stage work and in 2007 shared the London Theatre Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award. By that point, Garfield had already stepped in front of the camera for big- and small-screen work. He appeared alongside Robert Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep in “Lions for Lambs,” prompting Variety to name him one of 10 Actors to Watch. “I’m just lucky to be there working on the same project as them, although I don’t really expect to be recognized later by audiences,” he told the magazine. Across the pond, he blew British audiences away with his performance as a secretive kid in “Boy A,” a TV movie that won Garfield a BAFTA Best Actor Award . Perhaps his most well-known role to date, though, is a turn opposite Heath Ledger in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” in which he played a gangly kid and romantic rival to Ledger as they both competed for the affections of Lily Cole. While “Spider-Man” won’t hit theaters until the summer of 2012, this year is already shaping up to be a profile-raising one for Garfield. He stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg this fall in the highly anticipated, David Fincher-directed “The Social Network” and also with Keira Knightley in “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s haunting novel of the same name. Hollywood Ink: Jesse Eisenberg Delivers in 30 Minutes or Less

Ari Graynor on Holy Rollers, Love Interest Roles, and Her ‘Quirky Jewishness’

Here at Movieline, we try to be cool and impartial, but when it comes to Ari Graynor, I’m just a full-blown advocate. Give this woman more roles! She can do scene-stealing supporting turns (like her perpetually wasted Caroline in Peter Sollett’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist ), tempting sexpots ( Whip It, Youth in Revolt ), and network TV arcs ( Fringe ) in equal measure, and she adds her own unique spin to the noir moll in Kevin Asch’s Holy Rollers , where she plays Rachel, a drug dealer’s girlfriend who entices Hasidic Sam (Jesse Eisenberg) further into a life of crime. Graynor called up Movieline last week to discuss what made the part an unlikely fit for her, what she was supposed to be doing in one recent Fringe appearance, and the comic book role she’s begging to play.

The Verge: Justin Bartha

For years, Justin Bartha’s been a dependable supporting player in comedies ( The Hangover ), tentpoles ( National Treasure ) and even misfires ( Gigli ), but his days of second fiddle may be coming to an end. In the new drama Holy Rollers , Bartha still plays support to Jesse Eisenberg, but through his role as the debauched Hasid who lures Eisenberg into a life of drug running, Bartha gives the movie its jittery intrigue. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old actor has the lead in Stanley Tucci’s Broadway musical Lend Me a Tenor , and though he was gone for most of the first Hangover , he’s due to have an expanded role in the second. Last week, Bartha spoke to Movieline about the perils of indie filmmaking, Eisenberg’s habit of self-deprecating, and the job he’d take on the next Hangover if director Todd Phillips asked him.

REVIEW: Michael Douglas’s Solitary Man More Shocking Than Interesting

Public humblings are a risky maneuver, whether engineered by politicians, tycoons, athletes or movie stars: Nothing less than abject vulnerability will do, and the performance will be scrutinized for sincerity with a righteous, collectively hooded eye. You may not have been aware that Michael Douglas was scheduled for a public humbling, and yet every aspect of Solitary Man , a lewdly annotative study of aging male salaciousness, is engineered to tweak our received ideas about its star. Part two of this exercise, Oliver Stone’s sequel to Wall Street , which finds former financial alpha lizard Gordon Gekko freshly released from prison, may have a better shot at tapping those ideas; it at least has more reason to presume they have remained relevant in the public imagination.

‘The Hangover,’ ‘New Moon,’ ‘Avatar’ Lead 2010 MTV Movie Awards Nominations

Voting begins Wednesday for the MTV Movie Awards, which air live on MTV June 6. By Eric Ditzian Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper in “The Hangover” Photo: Warner Bros. Beware the power of an overwhelming “Hangover.” That’s the first lesson of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , because the votes are in and the Bradley Cooper-starring comedy leads the field with six nominations. Following close behind in that flick’s boozy wake are “New Moon” and “Avatar,” each of which nabbed five nominations. “The Hangover” was tapped in categories including Best Movie, Best Comedic Performance (Cooper and Zach Galifianakis) and Best Villain (Ken Jeong). After “Twilight” led the 2009 awards with seven nominations, the vampire sequel’s 2010 nods include Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Kristen Stewart), and Best Male Performance (Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner). “Avatar” scored in such categories as Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Zoe Saldana) and Best Villain (Stephen Lang). Hosted by Aziz Ansari , the Movie Awards air live on Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET. Starting Wednesday, May 12, through Saturday, June 5, you’ll be able to head to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for a winner in every category. Voting for Best Movie, however, will stay open throughout the awards show on June 6 — meaning you’ll have a chance to affect the night’s biggest prize until the very last minute. Rounding out the Best Movie category are “Alice in Wonderland” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” In addition to the “Hangover” and “New Moon” boys, the Best Male Performance category consists of Channing Tatum (“Dear John”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Half-Blood Prince”) and Zac Efron (“17 Again”). Joining Stewart and Saldana as Best Female Performance nominees are Amanda Seyfried (“Dear John”), Emma Watson (“Half-Blood Prince”) and Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”). MTV will also introduce three brand-new categories at this year’s show. Freaking over their nods for Best Scared-as-Sh– Performance will be Alison Lohman (“Drag Me to Hell”), Amanda Seyfried (“Jennifer’s Body”), Jesse Eisenberg (“Zombieland”), Katie Featherston (“Paranormal Activity”) and Sharlto Copley (“District 9”). The Biggest Badass Star category has laid the smackdown on Rain, Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum, Sam Worthington and Chris Pine. And swooping in to compete for Global Superstar are Pattinson, Stewart, Lautner, Radcliffe and Johnny Depp. The Best Kiss category will feature a lip-smacking showdown of “Twilight” franchise stars: Stewart and Pattinson (“New Moon”), Stewart and Dakota Fanning (“The Runaways”), and Lautner and Taylor Swift (“Valentine’s Day”), as well as Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (“The Proposal”) and Saldana and Worthington (“Avatar”). Battling it out for Best Villain will be Jeong (“The Hangover”), Lang (“Avatar”), Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”), Helena Bonham Carter (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Tom Felton (“Half-Blood Prince”).
