‘American Idol’ Report Card: Joshua Ledet ‘Man’s’ Up, Jessica Sanchez Stands Tall

Another night of standing O’s for Ledet, more catcalls for Hollie Cavanagh and high praise for Phillip Phillips. By Gil Kaufman Joshua Ledet performs on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Wednesday night’s episode of “American Idol”
offered definitive proof of what happens when you give the kids the keys to the Lambo: they crash and burn. On an evening when the themes were as vague as any we can recall (California Dreamin? Songs You Wish You’d Written?), the top four
either went obscure or doubled-down on the most obvious choices possible, which made for an uneven night. A few things became crystal clear, though: based on the girl squeals, Phillip Phillips could win this thing in a walk-off without singing another note as long as he loses his razor, smiles and keeps clothes shopping at J.C. Penny. Similarly, Joshua Ledet pretty much has it in the bag, while Hollie Cavanagh has run out of luck and Jessica Sanchez should perfect her third-place finisher pageant smile and wave. It’s also pretty clear at this point that the dream is over for some and just about to come true for others. But who will be packing up their clear heels and headed home and who should prep their awkward bro hug posture? Read on to find out! Joshua Ledet : Of the thousands, maybe tens of thousands of “California Dreamin'” songs Josh could have picked, he picked a song that is the musical equivalent of a cardboard and mayonnaise sandwich: Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.” It felt overwrought, over serious, overcooked and just no fun. The kid can sing, but by the end I was just over it. He more than made up for it with James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Yeah, it’s another dusty, nearly 50-year-old oldie, but it’s dead-center in his lane and his voice was made for this kind of gritty, throwback soul. We asked last week if that’s what people really want to hear in 2012 , but at the very least Ledet put on a showcase for his powerhouse soul simmer and shout. He sang it and he sold it. Sorry girls, it’s gonna be Josh and Phil facing off in two weeks. A- Phillip Phillips : It’s always dicey when Phil puts down the guitar. Just like he doesn’t know how to dress like anything other than the guy fixing your HVAC system, the pawn shop kid can’t figure out what to do with his hands. His surf bum take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” was … fine. It felt kind of like something you’d see in a San Diego beach bar on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The judges, as usual, were charmed, which makes me think he has incriminating photos or something. Hey, Randy, smiling isn’t singing. I’ve been writing about music longer than Jessica Sanchez has been alive and I can honestly say I’ve never heard of “Volcano” by Damien Rice. That’s the song you wish you’d written, Phil? Frankly, it sounded like everything Phillips sings to me, which is to say that it came off like a pretty decent Dave Matthews cover. The grit and passion were there, but the song never achieved lift-off. Can you really imagine being mesmerized by scruff and a smile for 90 minutes? B- Jessica Sanchez : Talk about overcorrecting. Sanchez was like a long-haul trucker snapping up out of deep sleep after hitting a guardrail and almost jackknifing the rig. She went from too sexy and grown up last week to just … too old. Her cover of Etta James’ “Steal Away” was, as the late, lamented Simon Cowell would say, “cabaret.” The Cirque du Soleil-worthy two-tone pants suit was weird and the song just made her seem like she was singing to her extended family in the living room while trying to make granny proud. The old soul and bluesy heart were there, but it felt more like an off-Broadway musical revue than a concert. And, c’mon, Jessica. The “‘Idol’ slayer?” We should have added Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” to our list of songs that must be retired from the “Idol” repertoire. Jennifer Hudson crushed it in “Dreamgirls,” Tamyra Gray and LaKisha Jones also made it their you-know what on the show. Despite all that, BeBe Chez gave it her all and did a good, but not great, job of it. She hit the notes, served up the emotion and got all angry with it, but it just felt a bit, well, obvious. B- Hollie Cavanagh : The kid knows how to suck up to the judges, that’s for sure. Picking Journey’s “Faithfully” was a guarantee that Randy would be on board. Too bad HCav face-planted on the melody, losing the spark she showed last week and looking as bored and lost as we felt. The big notes at the end almost saved her. Almost. Jennifer called the performance “laid back,” but to me it just felt like she was laid out. The bottom line is you can make someone look like a star, but you can’t make them act like one. You know what can make Hollie seem like a cool, contemporary star? A 22-year-old song by Bonnie Raitt! Between the baggy black Chicos pantsuit and the violins, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” was another off-the-Vegas-Strip snoozer that most surely punched her ticket home. And the crocodile tears near the end were whatever the opposite of a nice touch is. Pip pip, little one! American Idol Final 4 Review: California, There They Went!

Note to American Idol : Who the heck is picking the weekly themes this season?!? With the assignments growing more and more random, last night the final four finalists – Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez – were tasked with singing on track by a California native band or artist; and one they wish they had written themselves. Ummm… okay. Let’s rundown the first set of performances and then let’s vote on our favorite, shall we? Phillip Phillips took on CCR and asked viewers one simply question: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” Well, have you?!? ‘American Idol’ California Dreamin’ Night: What Should The Top Four Sing?

MTV News’ ‘Idol’ experts share their choices for Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Hollie Cavanagh. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox For the most part, the themes on this season’s “American Idol” have been pretty straightforward: Queen, Whitney Houston, Personal Idols, Songs From the Year You Were Born, Songs From the 1980s, More Songs About Buildings and Food ( look it up ). But when the final four take the stage Wednesday night (May 9), they’ll be tasked with performing two songs in one of the most ambiguous, wide-open themes in the show’s history: California Dreamin’ (songs by Californians) and Songs I Wish I’d Written. Considering that the only singer left on the show who might reasonably write his own songs is Phillip Phillips (sample chorus: “Growwwwwl”) and that Joshua Ledet has proven time and again that he has a thin-at-best grasp on musical history, the second challenge is a big one. That leaves the California theme, which is equally amorphous since, well, half the hit songs of the past 50 years have been born on the Golden Coast. Maybe more. At least that leaves Adele out of the mix for once, not to mention Mariah and Whitney Houston — so, good luck, Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh! Those and other conundrums have been placed in the very capable hands of MTV News’ resident “Idol” experts, Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery, who will once again post their secret ballots without peeking at the other’s picks (we swear) and let us know which songs the top four should tackle. Joshua Ledet He still hasn’t set off the charisma bomb that will turn him from a good singer with a bland personality into what the judges seem to think is one of the (allegedly) best “Idol” contestants of all time. We’re not expecting fireworks this week, but for his Cali song, he has to go with Detroit-to-L.A. transplant Marvin Gaye. Elise Testone already snagged “Let’s Get It On,” so I say hit up “Sexual Healing.” It’s hard to tell what genre Josh is most familiar with, but we’ll assume gospel or soul, in which case, let’s split the difference with preacher/shouter Al Green and go with “Love and Happiness” or Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” — Kaufman I’d just like to go on record as saying it would be awesome if Joshua covered that “Californians” sketch from “SNL” a few weeks back, since it’d be way more interesting than anything we’re actually gonna hear tonight. That’ll never happen, of course, so for his Cali tune, I think he’ll swing for the fences and do a simmering version of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” We know he’s talented, but it’s time for him to take a chance if he wants to win this thing. As for the song he wished he wrote, I think he goes big. Though he might think he’s nasty, I say Josh does R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” Bonus points if he sings it in a cornfield . — Montgomery Jessica Sanchez It’s safe to say that Katy Perry’s un-showy “California Gurls” will turn up in a girl medley at some point Wednesday, which means Bebe would be wise to go with something like No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.” What song does the stiletto Barbie wish she’d written? That’s a tough one. Like Josh, Jessica hasn’t given us much insight into her musical taste, but considering she’s a 16-year-old girl, her repertoire has got to be pretty contemporary — and sappy. “Innocent” by Taylor Swift it is, then. — Kaufman Given that she’s actually from California, a couple weeks ago, J.Sanch probably would’ve just killed two birds with one stone and done a pair of her originals tonight. But, given that her confidence has taken a hit in recent weeks, she’ll go back to basics: namely, singing the bejeezus out of a ballad. Her Cali pick? The great Etta James’ “At Last.” With that out of the way, she’s free to let Bebe Chez do her thing, so for the song she wished she’d written, why not something from Beyonc

Cutest Family Ever Sings "Bohemian Rhapsody" on Way to School

We are very sorry, Jessica Sanchez . But your version of ” Bohemian Rhapsody ” was only the second best we’ve heard this week. That’s because the video of a father and his three adorable children has gone viral in which the family rocks out to this Queen hit as if they were characters in Wayne’s World . It’s apparently a morning tradition for the quartet, which makes its drive to school as enjoyable as human possible everyday. Sorry, other dads around the world, but this guy is setting the bar awfully high. Watch now: Father, Kids Sing “Bohemian Rhapsody”

America’s Next Top Model Shake-Up: Who’s Out?

Hmmm…. upon second thought, perhaps we should change the headline of this post to: America’s Next Top Model Shake-Up: Who is NOT Out? Indeed, Tyra Banks has cleaned house at her long-running reality show, firing three veteran personalities, all of whom have been with the series since its first cycle in 2003: J. Alexander, who served as a runway trainer/mentor to the models. Jay Manuel, the show’s creative director. Nigel Barker, a photographer/panelist. America’s Next Top Model is currently in its 18th season, a cycle dubbed “British Invasion” because it features a handful of international hopefuls. An ANTM insider tells The New York Post that “major changes” are planned for the following season, hence this wholesale changes. “Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander have been an integral part of the America’s Next Top Model brand and they helped turn this show into the household name it is today,” Executive producer Ken Mok said in a statement. “They have been amazing assets to the show and will always be a part of the Top Model family. We will continue to actively work with each of them on future projects.”

Colton Dixon on American Idol Elimination: God Will Guide Me

Immediately upon hearing his name called by Ryan Seacrest last night, as the latest American Idol finalist to get the boot , Colton Dixon was gracious and humble. He even apologized to the crowd for his poor Wednesday evening performances. A little while later, backstage with reporters, not much was different for the dyed-hair rocker. “[I’m] a little overwhelmed, but besides that, I’m good,” Dixon said. “I know God is going to use me to do other things.” Colton Dixon – “Bad Romance” Was he at all resentful that the judges used up their save on Jessica Sanchez the week before? Not remotely. She “deserved to be saved, hands down,” Colton said, adding that he knew he’d be in the bottom three was he was called to center stage along with Sanchez and Phillip Phillips . Sounding excited to write his own songs and build a career, Dixon went on to detail what he plans for America to hear from him going forward. “I want to do Christian music. That’s where my heart’s at. I grew up on it, that’s what I’ve taken a stand for, and that’s what I believe in. I’m going to start writing as soon as they let me and get started on a record, whether it’s independent [or on Interscope Records]. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m just excited to share a gift that God gave me. It’s all in His timing. You’ve just got to let go and trust that He’s going to do good things with you.” We wish Colton the best of luck on his journey.

‘American Idol’: What Will Jessica Sanchez Sing After Near-Exit?

Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery debate which ‘Then and Now’ hits the ‘Idol’ top seven should tackle. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez performs on “American Idol” Photo: FOX The “American Idol” top seven took on current hits last week, and look how well things turned out! Uh, wait, never mind . Anyway, after Jessica Sanchez escaped elimination thanks to the judges’ save (which officially marked the first time this season they’ve actually done something right), “Idol” producers decided to up the ante for Wednesday night’s (April 18) show by letting the contestants sing both a #1 from the past decade — since it worked so well before — and a classic soul tune. Yes, it’s “Then and Now” week on “Idol,” which, come to think of it, is a pretty apt way of viewing the show’s steady decline. It also means we’re going to see the usual front-runners strut their stuff: Sanchez will dominate a Beyonc

Jessica Sanchez’s Almost Elimination: Other ‘American Idol’ Shockers

Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry were booted from ‘Idol’ earlier than anyone expected. By Gil Kaufman Jessica Sanchez with Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images America, you only have yourself to blame. In a pattern repeated for the past few seasons, “American Idol” viewers seem to get a little lazy this time of year and suddenly forget to vote for their favorites, putting one of the potential winners in jeopardy. Case in point: preternaturally talented teen diva Jessica Sanchez. Even after killing it on Wednesday night (again)
, Bebe Chez very nearly got sent home in seventh place Thursday night in one of the most shocking near-eliminations in recent history. The judges didn’t even have to hear her sing before they jumped up to save the singer
, but she came thisclose to becoming the latest super-talent to wash out of “Idol” way before her time. The “Idol” save has a checkered history. Sometimes it’s been pulled out for singers whose talents (and commercial prospects) were decent at best (Michael Lynche) or annoying at worst (Casey Abrams). In fact, of the four saves in “Idol” history, the only one that truly made sense was season eight’s piano-playing Matt Giraud, who only made it one more week before being sent home. With only two weeks left before their save would have timed out, Randy, Jennifer and Steven pulled out the lifeline for the one remaining contestant who truly deserves it, if only for the fact that Sanchez could break the string of wins by bland white male singers who’ve met with solid to dismal chart success over the past four seasons. If Sanchez had gotten the boot, she would have joined a fairly illustrious group of singers who were gone too soon. Among them: Jennifer Hudson : Success is the best revenge, and when Hudson was inexplicably sent home in seventh place during season three who knew she’d go on to be the first Oscar winner in “Idol” history and a musical powerhouse? Um, we did. Chris Daughtry : The second-most shocking elimination in “Idol” history has to be bald-headed steak-and-potatoes rocker Chris Daughtry. He went out in fourth place in season five, which was won by … Taylor Hicks. Yeah, that guy. After declining to take the lead singer gig in Fuel, Daughtry went on to multiplatinum success and a spot as the third best-selling “Idol” alum of all time. Melinda Doolittle: If you watched season six of “Idol” then you likely remember the powerhouse vocalist that ex-lead judge Simon Cowell dubbed “incredible.” But, somehow, Melinda got the hook in the week before the finale , beat out by Blake Lewis. You know, the beatboxing faux-hawk wearing dude who lost to Jordin Sparks? Exactly. Do you think the judges made the right call by saving Jessica? Let us know in comments below! ‘American Idol’ Judges Call Competition ‘A Toss-Up’

In the wake of Jessica Sanchez’s near-exit, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler say season 11 is anyone’s to win. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler Photo: MTV News After “American Idol” voters tried their hardest to send presumptive front-runner Jessica Sanchez packing on Thursday night’s shocking results show — only to have their plan foiled by the judges, who promptly used their save to keep her in the competition — the deck has been re-shuffled, and it appears that this season really is anyone’s to win. Following Sanchez’s near-exit, two of those “Idol” judges spoke to MTV News, and they weren’t shy about letting their opinions be known. Simply put, they were as surprised as everyone to hear Sanchez’s name called. “I think [America] thought she was safe,” Randy Jackson said of Sanchez. “I think they thought she was safe … and I think they thought [fellow bottom-three dweller] Joshua [Ledet] was safe, because those two alone … have been the most consistent. So, you know, yeah, I think they just forgot.” “There’s just so many different singers out there. That’s why it’s hard for me now,” Steven Tyler added. “I like to let America judge. Tonight they were wrong.” More than likely, they were. But the inclusion of Sanchez in the bottom three raises a larger question about the show: Is it possible for anyone other than a guy to actually win anymore? The previous four champions — David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery — have all been proud possessors of the Y chromosome, and a male contestant has won in five of the previous six seasons. (Jordin Sparks was the last female to be crowned champion, way back in 2007.) And now, with Thursday night’s shake-up — and the rise of Colton Dixon and Phillip Phillips — it appears that history may repeat itself once again. Not surprisingly, though, neither Jackson nor Tyler seems to see it that way. “I don’t know, it’s a toss-up right now,” Jackson said. “I think it’ll be a person. ” “You gotta wait and see,” Tyler added. Of course, Jackson was also quick to admit that both Dixon and Phillips are strong contenders for the season 11 crown (which is probably why “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine spent so much time this week trying to pit them against each other ), and he saved a particular bit of praise for Phillips and his, uh, unique approach to the competition. “He’s his own guy, that’s what I love about him. He’s an individual, Steven’s an individual; that’s what a real artist is made of,” Jackson said. “An artist is not usually a follower; you want to be your own person. So I love that about him. I don’t know if it’s going to hurt him, but somebody’s gotta go every week now. It’s gonna be rough.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season 11 Performances
