American Idol Results: A Shocking Bottom Three …

American Idol treated us to seven great performances last night. But the remaining finalists were forced to look ahead on this evening’s results show, as America voted and revealed an inevitable, but sad result for one aspirant: He or she is going home. Who’s on to the top six and who’s out? It looked briefly like fan favorite Phillip Phillips might be in danger, but it came down to a surprising bottom three: Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Elise Testone. That’s right, arguably the three best singers remaining on the show were in danger of getting booted, making for the most gut-wrenching elimination this year. The contestant getting the boot this week was an even bigger stunner, too. Who was it? You’re not going to believe it, but the lowest vote-getter was … Jessica Sanchez . The studio erupted in chaos at this news, but as she began to sing for her life, she was interrupted by Jennifer Lopez, who informed her that she had been … SAVED by the judges!! There it is, the one and only judges’ save of the season, used on a powerhouse performer who definitely didn’t deserve to be in danger, let alone go home. “We are saving Jessica, without a doubt!” Randy said as the judges engulfed her. “This girl is one of the best singers in America! Ever! Are you kidding me!” “Everybody, please vote for the best! Come on!” It remains to be seen if America will heed his words a week from now, but for now, all seven singers survive heading into next Wednesday’s Top 7: Reloaded. What do you think? Did the judges make the right call?

‘American Idol’ Enters ‘This Decade’: What Should They Sing?

Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery face off on what ‘Songs From This Decade’ the top seven should tackle. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez Photo: FOX For weeks, it’s felt like we’ve been screaming into the void. We keep begging “American Idol” to get with the program and borrow a page from rivals like “The Voice” and “X Factor” by having the finalists sing songs that were released in the decades since Randy Jackson played bass for Carlos Santana. It’s a novel concept, we know. Seriously, enough with the Billy Joel and Michael Jackson theme nights! Not another collection of Elton John, disco or Frank Sinatra songs, please! Give us something contemporary, dudes — or at least something that may give our aunt in Virginia pause. Finally, “Idol” producers seem to have heard our pleas and given the top seven a shot at sounding halfway relevant this week with “Songs From This Decade” night. Now, the reality singing gods giveth and they taketh away, so while we’re in mortal fear of hearing Jason Mraz and Train songs, we’re also a bit torn about what is likely to turn into an Adele-valanche. Be careful what you wish for. But we’ll take it. So here’s what songs MTV News’ resident “Idol” experts think the remaining contestants should tackle. They failed to take our advice on last week’s ’80-themed show , and look how that one turned out … DeAndre . Read on for our picks! Joshua Ledet Josh smashed it last week and is once again at the top of his game. But here’s the thing: The guy remains an R&B tabula rasa, personality-wise. It’s hard to see him headlining an arena tour or filming an iconic video. Since we hear he’s way more confident off-camera than on, L-Deezy needs to get a little grimy, and what better way to do that than with Usher’s “OMG”? Or, if he must, I offer a one-time-only Adele dispensation for “Someone Like You.” — Kaufman I see him going one of two ways tonight: Either he embraces his brassy, sassy side and does Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” — which he’d kill,

Jesse James: Not Afraid of S–t!

Sounds like Jesse James has been reading Bristol Palin’s memoir Not Afraid of Life . Okay, probably not. But he is back with a new reality show and is defiant as ever. “I’m not afraid of s–t,” James proclaimed to E! Online this week while promoting Jesse James: Outlaw Garage , his new Discovery Channel special premiering April 9. “Everyone can say whatever they want about me and call me whatever, but guess what? I’m still standing . I think I’m in a pretty awesome place in life.” That he is, it’s just not in Hollywood. James now resides in Austin, Texas, and slowly returned to TV with an appearance on Discovery’s American Chopper: The Build-Off in December. Outlaw follows James and his team at the Austin Speed Shop as they rebuild a 1932 Ford Roadster. He’s hoping it will soon become a regular series. In any case, he’s not gonna let the sex scandal(s) that torpedoed his marriage to Sandra Bullock (or his engagement to Kat Von D ) get the best of him: “In light of everything that’s happened, I think I came out of it a better dad and a better person while living and working in a place that’s like heaven to me.” James, who sort-of trash talked Sandra on American Chopper, says fans can expect a little bit of an update on his life when his new show debuts. “There’s a little bit of personal life [in Outlaw ] with the kids and kind of explaining where I am now,” James said. “I hate those words ‘reality TV’ because I think this is a refreshing change because none of it is scripted … there’s no made-up drama.” Hey, if anyone knows non-made-up drama, it’s Jesse James. Jessica Sanchez Asks: How Will I Know?

You know what they say: if at first you succeed historically well at covering a late legend, try, try again. That’s exactly the advice Jessica Sanchez took on American Idol this week, as she followed up her version of Whitney Houston’s ” I Will Always Love You ” from last month with a take here on the more upbeat “How Will I Know?” Was it on par with Jessica’s initial Whitney performance? No. But that would have been nearly impossible to match. The judges were clearly impressed, with Jennifer Lopez expressing shock over such a big voice emanating from such a small body. Where do you stand on Jessica Sanchez? Enough Whitney or more Whitney? Watch and react now: Jessica Sanchez – “How Will I Know”

Heejun Han Only Regrets Not Taking Off His Pants On ‘American Idol’

‘I don’t regret anything that I did,’ latest ‘Idol’ casualty says of his oddball, oft-hilarious run on the show. By James Montgomery Heejun Han Photo: MTV News Since his exit from “American Idol” , last week, Heejun Han has made the most of his post-show media blitz, openly pining for judge Jennifer Lopez , taking jabs at mentor Jimmy Iovine and, of course, suggesting Diddy may have been in the bag during his appearance on the show. Oh, and he also joked that he’s going to start watching “The Voice.” Needless to say, it’s been a wild ride — nearly as wild as his time on the show itself — so when Han stopped by the MTV newsroom on Monday (April 2), we asked him about all the comments he’s made since getting the boot. And, as you’d probably expect, he wasn’t about to apologize. “I’m just going to be me, that’s all,” Han said. “But I will say that the show itself was the greatest opportunity a person could ever have in their lifetime, I believe. A guy like me, who has less talent than any other contestant that’s on that stage made it this far was amazing. It was a God-given gift.” Of course, he took the same tack when asked about his now-infamous performance of Billy Joel’s “My Life,” in which he shed a tuxedo and sprinted through the audience, much to the annoyance of judge Steven Tyler and, judging by his getting voted off the show the following week, the majority of the “Idol” audience too. But does he regret doing any of it? In a word: No. “It’s supposed to be entertaining. It’s either [supposed to] make them cry, make them laugh, or make them pissed off about something. I felt like I at least did two of the three [with] Billy Joel,” he explained. “People ask me, ‘What would you do differently, because that’s the thing that caused you to go home?’ But only thing I’d do differently this time, if I could go back in time, then I’m not just going to take off my tuxedo, I’m also going to take off my pants. I don’t regret anything that I did; entertaining people is catching them out of nowhere, and I felt like I did it.” And to that end, Han said he’s proud of everything he accomplished during his time on “Idol,” because he’ll be the first to admit that he came into the competition with less experience than any of his fellow contestants. “I mean, Jessica Sanchez was singing when she was, like, a sperm,” he laughed. “My first non-Korean audience was Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez, and it just kept getting bigger.” And Han truly believes he left at the top, with his rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You.” “I saw [elimination] coming. Everyone took the Billy Joel performance wrong … people might have taken it as a joke, and I just had to show them that I do really belong here, and I didn’t make it here by mistake. … I really wanted to finish on a high note,” he said. “I knew that was what the whole thing was all about, and if you listen to the song, lyric-wise, it says ‘A song for you.’ It was not a song for me to just be in this [competition], it’s a song for people who have been believing in me and supporting me, but this is my last stage, so, thank you guys.” What do you think of Heejun’s “Idol” elimination? American Idols Sing Their Idols: Our Song Picks

MTV’s Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery hope the top nine will buck convention and show their age — in a good way. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez on “American Idol” Photo: Fox So far this season, the finalists on “American Idol” haven’t done a great job when it comes to song selection. Whether it’s rescuing an obscure hair-metal tune by White Lion from history’s trash heap or stupidly picking the same Adele song in the same week, these kids don’t seem to have the magic touch. That’s why this week’s theme — songs from their idols — is so pregnant with promise. Finally, an opportunity for Heejun , Colton, Jessica, Hollie and the gang to break out of their predictable been-there-done-that-downloaded the-iTunes-single-and-already-deleted-it ballad ghetto. Show producer Nigel Lythgoe has already let slip on Twitter that we can expect to hear “Beyonce, Mariah, Miranda, Lifehouse, Daughtry, Led Zeppelin.” Zzzzzzzzzzz. So we know it’s already set in stone and nobody listens to us anyway (though they totally should), but here is what we would like to hear the top nine sing this week: Colton Dixon The Warped Tour wannabe has already proven his terrible taste in tunes (White Lion, Switchfoot), and we can only assume he’s going to move into the Lifehouse this week. We get the piano thing, but Colton needs to prove his rock bona fides with something uptempo and (relatively) contemporary, since he’s the only guy who has a “look” to speak of. How about the White Stripes’ “Fell in Love With a Girl”? Or Radiohead’s “Creep”? — Gil Kaufman Word on the street — or the Internet — is that he’s going to do a Lifehouse song, which, OK, seems perfectly fitting (anyone who’s read my “Idol” report cards knows how I feel about this guy). But since we’re swinging for the fences here, I’m going to suggest C.Dix go outside his comfort zone and take on Death Cab for Cutie’s “I’ll Follow You Into the Dark.” It’s plenty somber, and it plays directly to his strengths: namely, being kinda wussy and connecting on a deeply soulful plane with his female fans. Imagine the squeals when he keens “Love of mine … ” Or, shoot, maybe he goes super current and does Fun.’s “We Are Young”? — James Montgomery Hollie Cavanagh We get it, Hollie, you are the tiny queen of the gigantic ballad. But what you haven’t done yet is show us some personality. Here’s your chance. Go with an uptempo song that’s fun but isn’t by a singer known just for their soaring vocals. Perhaps Katy Perry’s “Firework”? — Kaufman We know she can sing. We also know that she relies w-a-a-y too heavily on torchy, big-time ballads as a result. So this week, I’m hoping she changes things up a bit, shows some personality and covers a super-pop tune like Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” or “Part of Me.” Or maybe she splits the difference and does Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”? She needs to have fun up there, because I get the creeping suspicion that voters might be getting bored with her, which could mean she’s getting dangerously close to elimination. And that would be a shame. — Montgomery DeAndre Brackensick What do you do with this guy? He’s got the falsetto and, apparently, a look that the ladies love, but he’s low on stagecraft and just never seems comfortable in his own skin. There may be no better song for him to tackle than Maxwell’s cloud-chasing falsetto ballad “Prettywings.” It makes him sound now and it’s so in his ballpark, it’s sick. — Kaufman Still waiting on him to have his breakthrough moment (though his hair remains a constant highlight each and every week), and since this week’s theme is apparently “Idols” — and since J.Lo keeps dropping references to it — I’m just going to assume the inevitable: He’s doing a Bob Marley song. But which should he choose? “Three Little Birds” would showcase both his voice and his impressive bobbing skills, though how amazing would it be if he switched things up and did Pete Tosh’s “Legalize It”? Steven Tyler would probably leap onstage and sing it with him. — Montgomery Phillip Phillips Phil’s problem is he’s kind of no fun. He won’t listen to Tommy or Jimmy about clothes or music, and he kind of just turns every song into a Dave Matthews grumble. I could go one of two ways with this guy: either a hushed, not growly ballad by Bon Iver like the Grammy bait “Holocene,” or something fun and light like Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” which everyone loves! — Kaufman Another, uh, favorite of mine ( loved what he did on “Movin’ Out,” especially the part where he turned it into an ungodly growl-fest … ), and if you think he’s not doing Dave Matthews tonight, well, then you’ve never watched his feet while he plays. All kidding aside, I’m hoping he goes outside the box, maybe does Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” or Jeff Buckley’s “Grace.” Neither of those things will actually happen, of course, and according to Nigel Lythgoe’s Twitter account, someone’s doing Daughtry, so it’ll probably be him. It’s definitely in his, uh, zone. So I’ll say he does “What About Now.” — Montgomery Heejun Han Best-case scenario is Hee Han comes out and does a “Weird” Al Yankovic song and just gets it over with. But if the “funny” finalist insists on hanging around, he also needs to break out of ballad jail and go for something a bit faster, but not as jokey as his Billy Joel performance. My pick: Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” — Kaufman I was going to suggest he do the “Nyan Cat” song , since it’s nearly as annoying as he is. But since that seems like a longshot at best (though, with Heejun, you never know), and given the buttery loverman shtick he keeps foisting down our throats each week, I’m thinking he goes R&B. Perhaps Usher’s “U Got It Bad”? D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”? Or maybe he goes into full-on Operation Shutdown mode and just cover’s Beck’s “Sexx Laws”? Anything to speed up his inevitable exit. — Montgomery Skylar Laine It’s hard being the only country girl. While the temptation is to break out of that gilded cage, one way spunky Laine can mix it up is by choosing a new classic by an old star. What about the Jack White-produced “Van Lear Rose” by Loretta Lynn done in a bluesy/jazzy style? — Kaufman Gee, I wonder if she’ll do a country tune? Lythgoe hinted on Twitter that someone’s doing a Miranda Lambert song, so I’ll go out a limb and suggest it’ll be her. Which means get ready for a version of “The House That Built Me,” y’all! Other, less inevitable suggestions? Since she got so many Reba comparisons, perhaps “You Lie” or “What If,” or a classy, brassy take on anything from the Patsy Cline songbook (“Crazy”? “I Fall to Pieces”?). — Montgomery Joshua Ledet How Ledet went from being one of the front-runners to a potential also-ran is a mystery to me, but needless to say, he needs to bring it this week. We know he can do church, but can he do something a bit more pop? I say have some fun and do R. Kelly’s “Happy People.” It’s mostly midtempo, but Josh could surely throw some fire into the middle to make it ignite and prove again that he can handle modern music. — Kaufman What to do with Josh? He can sing practically anything, though after a rough couple of weeks, perhaps he needs to get back to basics: Gospel. Maybe he does Kirk Franklin’s “Looking for You”? If he’s looking for something a little more, uh, contemporary, does he dare bring the “Mantasia” thing full-circle and do the fabulous Fantasia’s “I Believe” or “When I See U”? — Montgomery Jessica Sanchez We get it: The tiny girl can blow the roof off the dump. Ballads? Check. After her disastrous “Turn the Beat Around,” J.Sanch needs to show us she can do dance floor as well as prom night. It’s gotta be Rihanna, and I give her a choice: “Only Girl (In the World),” or “We Found Love.” — Kaufman She’s doing Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Conundrum: Why Are Heejun And DeAndre Still In?

‘DeAndre is a hot dude who appeals to the female demographic,’ ‘Idol’ blogger explains, while Han is backed by Vote for the Worst website. By Gil Kaufman Heejun Han and DeAndre Brackensick Photo: Getty Images There’s almost always a singer on each season of “American Idol” who makes it way deeper into the competition than expected. But season 11 of the show has seen two unlikely finalists — Heejun Han and DeAndre Brackensick — stumble into the top 9 and onto this summer’s cast tour despite a string of, respectively, jokey and lackluster performances that have drawn assorted raspberries from the judges and outright derision at times from music-industry icon and show mentor Jimmy Iovine. Their resilience got MTV News wondering if perhaps they have a special magic that some of the other eliminated finalists haven’t discovered yet. We spoke to some of our favorite “Idol” experts to take a look at the dynamic duo’s social-network presence to try to figure out how they’ve done it. For Brackensick, it doesn’t appear to be thanks to Twitter , where he had just 31,660 followers (dubbed “DreDreamers”) as of Tuesday evening and spent most of his time thanking fans for their support or complaining about poor WiFi at the “Idol” mansion. “DeAndre is a hot dude who appeals to the female demographic,” said leading “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli of MJsbigblog about the strange allure of the singer with a sky-high voice and hair-commercial-ready curls. “He’s sung well enough to give the impression that he’s got potential. The ‘Master Blaster’ performance — which Jimmy and the judges loved — was enough to keep him going for a week or two more, but if he doesn’t step it up, he’s going out mid-pack, too.” Heejun’s following on Twitter was a heftier 86,663 on Tuesday, putting him near the top of the social-networking heap among his fellow finalists. Not surprisingly for the yuk-loving singer, his interactions with fans are much sillier and more playful than most of the others, with a loose vibe that matches his onscreen persona, including lots of candid photos and suggestions that fans adopt the nickname “Hanimals.” He also has the dubious distinction of being the subject of this year’s target on the Vote for the Worst website. “Finally, the man we were waiting for comes out to play,” the site said in a banner promoting the vote. “Welcome to VFTW, Heejun. We love you. Here are lots of votes.” “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello said he gets Heejun’s appeal. OK, he doesn’t get it get it, but he can see how Han attracts attention by being a spectacle while everyone else is singing ballads — all the time. “His silliness supplies good .gifs for tumblr and easy fodder to tweet about,” said the former MTV “Idol in 60 Seconds” host. “Trust me, just like Sanjaya, the first time he has a performance that provides zero water-cooler talk, he’ll be dropped. Or as soon as it seems like powerhouse singers are in jeopardy, casual ‘Idol’ fans won’t be as quick to call in a vote for the clown.” Cantiello suspects Han has another thing going for him as well, whether it was all part of his devious plan or not. “Heejun’s got the whole bromance thing with Phil Phillips going on,” Cantiello said of the buddy-comedy vibe between the joker and one of this year’s leading male contenders. “So some of Phil’s fans are automatically into Heejun, and they’ll vote him through to keep seeing them be silly on TV together.” MJ agreed that Heejun is just good TV. Not only did he bring some unneeded extra drama to the Hollywood rounds by sparring with annoying Richie “Cowboy” Law, he’s shown his vulnerable and sensitive side as well. “Up until now, viewers wanted him on their TVs and most definitely wanted him on the tour, where he is likely going to be super-entertaining,” she said. “But now that he’s beginning to knock off vocally gifted finalists like Erika [Van Pelt], watch the backlash begin. I don’t think he’s got more than a couple of weeks left in the competition.” How do the seven other finalists match up on the Twitter tote board? Pint-sized cute Hollie Cavanagh actually comes in below Brackensick with 30,792 “Holliepops,” while faux-hawk flying singer Colton Dixon has one of the highest Twitter tallies at 92,458, putting him just ahead of foot-stomping Dave Matthews-alike Phillip Phillips , with 90,116 followers. Solidly in the middle of the pack is leading female contender Jessica Sanchez with 69,825 followers, while country girl Skylar Laine rounds out the bottom with 33,122 “Skoutlaws,” just ahead of gritty Elise Testone (23,969) and R&B crooner Joshua Ledet (23,618). Why do you think Heejun and DeAndre have survived this long? Let us know in comments below! American Idol Power Poll: The Top 10

With the American Ido l top 10 taking the stage again tonight, and with this shaping up to be one of the more hotly-contested seasons to date, it’s time for the first THG Power Poll of the season. Who do you see as the favorite right now? 10. Deandre Brackensick : Would have been our choice to leave after last week’s debacle. He can hit the high notes… and that’s about it. 9. Heejun Han : Love the personality, don’t see anything on stage that makes him standout above the rest. It’s solid and nothing more or less. 8. Elise Testone : Might suffer some likability issues. Did you notice her NOT applauding for Erika last week? Or not hugging Skylar? Yes, we’re forced to nitpick when the talent is this even. We did love her version of ” Let’s Stay Together .” 7. Joshua Ledet : We expect plenty of disagreement here. It’s not a question of his voice, just of his theatrics. Ledet’s ” When a Man Loves a Woman ” may have been the single best of any contestant this season, but we can see his act growing old. 6. Skylar Laine : She has the energy and the attitude, that’s for sure. She also has the identity: a rocking country chick. She just lacks the range. 5. Erika Van Pelt : Loved her take on“Edge of Glory.” A smooth, consistent voice makes it hard to see this finalist faltering in the next few weeks. 4. Colton Dixon : Love the risks he takes – a song by White Lion ?!? – and love his confidence on stage. Most definitely stands out on a weekly basis. 3. Jessica Sanchez : Will go down in Idol history for her version of “ I Will Always Love You .” That should be enough to keep her around for awhile. But can she go outside the world of ballads? A less-than-impressive take on “Turn the Beat Around” causes us to wonder. 2. Hollie Cavanagh : Has she had an off week yet? Memorable auditions of “Reflection,” “All the Man That I Need,” and “The Power of Love” prove she has staying power. Could work on her versatility and stage presence. 1. Phillip Phillips : He’s a cute young white guy with a guitar. Until American Idol viewers prove they are capable of crowning someone else, he has to be the favorite. WHO IS YOUR AMERICAN IDOL FAVORITE?

American Idol Results: The First Finalist Eliminated Is…

American Idol is now down to 12. Following an evening that paid tribute to Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder – and included the Performance of the Season in Jessica Sanchez’s ” I Will Always Love You ” rendition – the Fox competition sent its first finalist packing tonight. And the unlucky contestant was… … Jeremy Rosado ! The Jer-Bear was a bundle of nerves prior to his cover of ” Ribbon in the Sky ” last night, knowing he was a judges’ Wild Card pick from the week before and really had to prove himself to viewers. Sadly, he won’t have any more opportunities to do so. What do you think? Did Jeremy deserve to go home?

Phillip Phillips: Not Afraid of "Superstition" on American Idol

Did American Idol save its best for last Wednesday? Maybe not quite, but with Phillip Phillips closing the show with a rock version of the Stevie Wonder classic “Superstition,” it certainly went out on a high note. The song has been done on the show before, he acknowledged, but never like this. On a night when the contestants honored Stevie and Whitney Houston , most went the ballad / traditional route or played to the songs’ R&B roots. Not Phillip. Watch the night’s most energetic (if not the best) performance below: Phillip Phillips – Superstition (American Idol Top 13) He’s the “most different” artist they’ve got, according to the judges, and a strong talent to boot. P-squared should be a lock to advance after this … agree?
