6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Italy A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least four people, injuring dozens and seriously damaging historic buildings such as churches, bell towers and a medieval castle. The 6.0-magnitude quake was centered 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna in northern Italy at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. It struck at about 4 a.m. local time and was followed about an hour later by one of 5.1 magnitude thet causded more damage and more buildings to collapse, officials and witnesses said. “I ran out in my underwear,” one man told Italian television. The epicenter of the quake, the strongest to hit Italy in three years, was in the plains near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po river valley, and the tremor was felt as far west as Liguria, bordering France, and the Friuli region bordering Slovenia. There was serious damage to historic buildings and churches in the provinces of Modena and Ferrara, and the quake also shook major towns such as Bologna, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua. A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, the strongest measuring 5.1, and local mayors ordered residents to stay in the open. The last major quake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central city of L’Aquila in 2009, which killed nearly 300 people. After that quake, then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi moved a G8 meeting that was to have been held in Sardinia to near L’Aquila in a show of solidarity with the victims. Source

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said Tonya Thomas, 33, shot and killed her two daughters, 17-year-old Pebbles Johnson and 13-year-old Jazlin Johnson, and her two sons, 15-year-old Jaxs Johnson and 12-year-old Joel Johnson. Brevard County sheriff’s Lt. Tod Goodyear said three of the children went to a neighbor’s house to say their mother had shot them. The mother then called the children back to the house and shot them again, killing them, investigators said. “I’m a father and I’ve got kids. I cannot comprehend a person doing that to their child — calling them back to the slaughter,” Goodyear said. The neighbors called 911 just before 5 a.m. and deputies found Pebbles Johnson dead in the front yard of the home at 7245 Bright Avenue. Deputies then spotted someone at the door and called the SWAT team, who later entered the home and found four people dead. “We have no idea on motive right now,” said Goodyear, who added that no note or letter has been discovered. The father of the children lives elsewhere in Brevard County and was very distraught upon hearing the news, Goodyear said. A friend of Thomas told authorities that Thomas sent a text message around 3 a.m., saying she wanted to be cremated with her children. The message wasn’t received, however, until after the friend woke up, which was after the family was found dead. More than a dozen deputies and SWAT team members had converged on the home and the neighborhood was cordoned off during the investigation. Goodyear said deputies were called to the home for a domestic incident a few weeks ago, but he offered no other details. Thomas has no significant criminal history, and domestic battery charges against her were dropped in 2002. Jaxs Johnson was set to appear in juvenile court on Tuesday for a misdemeanor battery charge involving his mother, but it’s not known if the hearing played a role in the shootings. School officials issued a statement after being informed of the deaths. “Brevard Public Schools is saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of four of its students. The police have released the students’ names and crisis teams/grief counselors have been sent to the respective schools to help students, faculty and staff deal with this heartbreaking news,” school officials said. Woman Wearing Wedding Dress Found Stabbed To Death In Bathtub This is sad: Police are investigating the death of a woman who was found slain in her Burbank apartment just two days after getting married. Estrella Carrera, 25, was found Sunday in the bathtub of her apartment, in the 7800 block of Rutherford Avenue of the southwest suburb, police said in a news release. She’d been stabbed multiple times, they said. Carerra got married in a small, hastily-planned wedding to the father of her youngest child on Friday, her cousin, Sandy Lopez, told NBC Chicago on Monday afternoon. Carerra and her new husband had an on-again, off-again relationship, Lopez said. The victim was reportedly wearing her wedding dress when officials found her body, the Chicago Tribune reported. NBC Chicago has been unable to confirm that information. Neighbors, however, said they had no clue that she was married, planned on getting married or was even seeing someone. “I seen her walking to her car, her and her son. She never had problems with anybody. ‘Hi’ and ‘bye’ and that was it,” said neighbor Jason Tokarczyk. “I never ever seen her with a guy since I have been here, and I never seen her walking in and out with a guy at all.” Tokarczyk said Carerra was quiet and had only lived in the complex for a few months. His wife, Theresa Wilbanks, said she saw police remove Estrella’s body from the apartment but did not notice a wedding dress. The crime, naturally, left Wilbanks uneasy. “Scared. Nervous for me and my kids. We live right here. Her apartment is right there,” she said. Carerra had two children, ages 8 and 2, police said. The children were in the care of a relative over the weekend and were supposed to be picked up on Saturday afternoon. That didn’t happen, and police were called for a well-being check, they said. Ex-NYPD Cops Sentenced To 75 Years For Sexually Assaulting Woman At Gunpoint Former cop Michael Pena, convicted of terrorizing and sexually assaulting a Manhattan school teacher at gunpoint, will be 103 years old when he gets his first shot at parole. Pena, 27, got hit Monday with a 75-year-to-life sentence which means that he will likely die in prison. The sentence brought a rare smile to the face of the 25-year-old victim, who was outraged when the same jury that convicted Pena of sexual assault deadlocked on whether he actually raped her. “That day was supposed to be a new beginning for me,” the nervous victim told the court in a high-pitched voice before Pena was sentenced. “My life has been shattered.” She said Pena destroyed forever her sense of security and independence. “This has impacted every single aspect of my life,” she said. “He used his weapon and basically destructed my life with the choice he made that day.” The soon-to-be inmate offered a half-a$$ed apology after the verdict was handed down. “I’m deeply sorry for my conduct last August and the pain it caused.” Pena paused for a moment and then resumed speaking. “I deserve my punishment,” he said. “I will always carry the shame and burden of my actions. Summit High School sophomore Jeff Shott has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship for dressing like Jesus Christ on Fictional Character Day: The Spring Hill student was not disciplined for his action back in January, but Summit High Principal Charles Farmer did advise him that if the costume caused distraction during the day that he would have to remove it, school officials say. Shott voluntarily removed his robes and sash, a costume that included a hammer and nail. “Both principals said they were worried my costume would spark religious debates in every class and take up large amounts of time. I was sternly warned that if even one teacher reported the slightest disruption, I would have to take off my costume. Landlord Finds Dead Baby In The Freezer Police say an East Toledo landlord found a dead infant inside the freezer in one of his properties on Friday. The female corpse was discovered inside the home at 116 Paine St., where renters had just moved out. The landlord was said to be cleaning out the property when he found the body inside a freezer. He called police around 8:00 p.m. Friday to report the discovery. According to Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan, 20-year-old Kenisha Pruitt and Antonio Cervantes, 18, have been arrested. Both are being held in the Lucas County Jail on charges of child endangerment. More charges against the most recent tenants of the home are pending an autopsy which is scheduled to be performed on the infant Monday morning. This is disturbing: Kaduna metropolis was again thrown into panic and confusion on Sunday when a car suspected to be carrying explosives exploded along the busy Junction road/Sarduana Crescent close to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium killing not less than 40 people Most of the victims were Okada riders as Christians in the state were attending church services in commemoration of the Easter Sunday. The explosion left glass windows of houses within the vicinity shattered while bodies of victims blown into pieces littered the streets around the scene of the explosion. The Nation gathered the suicide bomber in the car had attempted going to an area with about three or more churches located side by side, but was turned back by the church security who had mounted a road block at the junction. The blast also destroyed property worth millions naira with majority of those affected being commercial motor cycle operators and black marketers of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise referred to as petrol. The Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Abubakar Zakari Adamu, told newsmen that about 36 people died in the explosion while 13 others are seriously injured and receiving treatment in various hospitals within the metropolis. Adamu said “we took seven persons at Rakiya Memorial Hospital, out of which five have died while the remaining two have been transferred to 44 Army Reference Hospital where about 20 others have been taken. At the St Gerald Hospital, out of the 10 people taken there, five died while the remaining five are receiving treatment. “At Barau Dikko Hospital, we have six dead bodies with six others injured; while about 20 people died on the spot. In all, we have about 36 dead bodies while 13 others are seriously injured.” However, a Red Cross official who would not want his name in print said the agency collected five dead bodies from the scene and are treating about 15 others for serious injuries, adding that there was the possibility of more casualty since the security agents and other emergency workers also evacuated dead bodies from the scene. Investigation revealed that about 60 buildings, including Fina White House Hotel and Marhaba Hotel, residential houses as well as the All Nations Christian Assembly located along Gwari Road behind Marhaba hotel were badly affected by the blast, while not less than six vehicles including a Honda CRV car were damaged. The explosion, according to an eye witness account occurred at about 9.45 am when the lone suspected suicide bomber attempted to enter Gwari road where the All Nations Christian Assembly and the ECWA Good News Church are located but was refused entering. The eye witness said that the suspected bomber was dressed in a T-shirt and short with a set of military uniform at the back seat of the car, adding that part of the problem was that some people were hawking fuel around the area, while the okada riders always park on the major road. One of the survivors who claimed to have witnessed the explosion said “we were three inside the car when suddenly I heard a loud explosion in front of me and suddenly, I saw a billow of smoke and fire under my vehicles. I quickly opened my door and when I look I didn’t see my mechanic again. I am still shocked how I survived.” Another survivor, Augustine Vincent and his cousin, Aaron Idiawaje who are currently receiving treatment at the St Gerard Catholic Hospital claimed they were on the motorcycle directly behind the bomber when the explosion occurred and attributed their miraculous escape to “the blood of Jesus”. He noted that truly Jesus Christ resurrected and that was why they were saved. “We were on our way to Church-Christ Embassy by Station on Kachia road and God saw our heart and saved us.” One of the guests of one of the hotel affected by the explosion told The Nation that when the blast occurred, the window of the hotel fell on his head, but said that no guest inside the hotel was affected, adding that the bomb explosion destroyed windows and doors of the hotel. Another survivor who gave his name as Tunde said, “I was driving pass the scene of the incident along with two other occupants when suddenly I heard a loud sound that almost blocked my ear. When I looked in front of my car, I saw smoke all over the place while fire was coming out from under my car. “The man at the back seat of my car who is my mechanic was nowhere to be found, even when I called his mobile phone, it was switched off, and so my fear is that he might have died as a result of the explosion.
