Surprise, Surprise: Bully Nabs PG-13 Without Trimming Offensive Scene

You don’t need me to explain to you how Harvey Weinstein is half huckster-genius and half megalomaniac witch doctor (even though I have, again and again and again ). Find all the evidence you need in Thursday’s announcement that Bully — the “controversial” documentary chronicling America’s bullying epidemic — would finally receive the PG-13 rating it so conspicuously sought from the MPAA. The best part: It won’t even have to trim the offending scene at the heart of all the publicity to date. Surprise! Suckers. The MPAA won’t even insist on the customary 90-day window between R- and PG-13-rated versions. Great! No one will ever accuse them of making it up as they go along ever again ! From a Weinstein Company press release: The Weinstein Company aided by the guidance and consultation from attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson, announced today that the MPAA has lowered the R rating, given for some language, for BULLY to a PG-13 in time for the film’s April 13th expansion to 55 markets. The scene that has been at the forefront of the battle with the MPAA, the intense scene in the film that shows teen Alex Libby being bullied and harassed on a bus, has been left fully intact and unedited. BULLY director Lee Hirsch felt editing the scene was not an option, and subsequently refused to do so, since it is too important to the truth and integrity behind the film. Also a victory is the exception the MPAA made by allowing the film to be released with the new rating before 90 days, which is the length of time their policy states a film must wait to be in theaters after a rating change to avoid confusion or inconvenience for moviegoers. This decision by the MPAA is a huge victory for the parents, educators, lawmakers, and most importantly, children, everywhere who have been fighting for months for the appropriate PG-13 rating without cutting some of the most sensitive moments. Three uses of the ‘F word’ were removed from other scenes, which ultimately persuaded the MPAA to lower the rating. Hirsch made the documentary with the intent to give an uncensored, real-life portrayal of what 13 million children suffer through every year. The new rating, which came about with the great support from MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd, grants the schools, organizations and cities all around the country who are lined up and ready to screen BULLY, including the National Education Association and the Cincinnati School District, the opportunity to share this educational tool with their children. Of course, the latter organizations always had that option , but what good is accepting parental permission slips without the prospect of getting the full ticket price as a result? Sigh. I know this is a “Forget it, Jake, it’s Chinatown” moment if ever there was one, but to come to work every day and see so many otherwise smart, savvy and skeptical industry observers and pundits just pass along such cynical, craven marketing spin for months without ever communicating Harvey’s obvious calculations to their readers — to treat the Bully ratings saga as a legitimate cause — is a just a total failure. It’s a total embarrassment . Taking nothing away from the film or the consequences of bullying, what kind of a complacent creep do you have to be to smilingly shovel so much of these people’s bullshit? Or to keep taking the MPAA at its grotesque face value? Or to accept some bullied teenager(s) carrying the banner for a movie on behalf of the most notorious bully of the modern Hollywood era? Or to pull a paycheck every day for publicizing such bald-faced lies? Puke. Anyway, the entertainment industrial complex wins again. Whatever. So much for Good Friday. [via Deadline ] Follow S.T. Gay Actor Won’t Play Jesus

Alas . But not because he’s gay! Maybe? “Though [Chris] New was recently turned down for the role of Jesus on a U.S. TV show, and suspects it was because he is gay, he said that actors should not blame homophobia for not getting cast in the roles they want. ‘There could be a million reasons why you might not get a job and gay people have to be careful about blaming [homophobia], because they’re reinforcing their own closet door.'” Anyway: Out or not? The debate continues… [ Guardian ]

Selena Gomez Twitter Bikini Pics from the Spring Breakers of the Day

Selena Gomez is really the only bitch who matters on the set of Spring Breakers…and I don’t really need to go into it because anyone with a dick knows she’s 19, looks 12 with implants, has probably learned to suck dick like a pro over the years of being whored out by her ghetto spic mom, so that the family can live the good life….sacrifice the innocence of one, for the benefit of the half dozen other kids they likely have….I’ve seen Puerto Rican / Mexican / Ecuadorian / Colombian families and their mini vans filled with Jesus’ little “say no to contraception” gifts…I get how it works…. Someone posted pics of her in bikini with some vag definition – hanging with dudes who look like every other dude these days…and I’m into it.

Inessential Essentials: Last Temptation of Christ on Blu-ray

Movieline is pleased to introduce Inessential Essentials, a regular feature about some of the most intriguing — if not necessarily most obvious — new home-viewing options on the market. We begin today with a film practically doomed by controversy a quarter-century ago, resurrected for DVD and finally given the treatment it truly deserves this week on Blu-ray. — Ed. What’s the Film : The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), new on Blu-ray via Criterion Collection Why it’s an Inessential Essential : Adapted from Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel by the same, The Last Temptation of Christ is a moving and heart-felt testament of religious faith. It’s also probably not the first film you’d think of when you think of when you think of Martin Scorsese’s filmography. Temptation follows Jesus of Nazareth (Willem Dafoe) in his long journey from looking at God’s presence as “the ultimate headache,” to quote Temptation screenwriter Paul Schrader, towards seeing death in the service of God as an act of divine mercy. The Last Temptation of Christ isn’t the only film of Scorsese’s to focus on a troubled protagonist’s spiritual crisis. Like several of Scorsese’s protagonists, Jesus gradually comes to understand the difference between how he can behave and how he should behave according to his moral principles. He’s a man first, and only by film’s end does he really become the messiah, too. Still, because of its sexual implications, the film was a source of major controversy when it was released in 1988 and even before then when Scorsese originally tried unsuccessfully to make The Last Temptation of Christ with Paramount Studios in 1983 on a considerably bigger budget. According to David Ehrenstein’s liner notes, Scorsese was told he could make the picture with a budget of $15-20 million. But then a letter-writing campaign from Christian fundamentalists stopped the 1983 production dead in its tracks. Scorsese would go on to make Temptation with a considerably smaller $7 million with Universal Studios. Nearly 25 years later, as comedian Billy Crystal “joked” during the most recent Oscars telecast, Scorsese is still always going to be the guy that did Goodfellas and other “crime pictures.” How the DVD/Blu Makes the Case for the Film : Predictably enough for a Criterion release, the Blu-ray features a number of exceptional special features, including a terrific audio commentary track that selectively alternates between Scorsese, Schrader, Dafoe and screenwriter Jay Cocks. The track is especially good since it only lets any one of these four talking heads speak when they have something worth saying, such as when Scorsese explains the background behind Mary Magdalene’s tattoos, or Cocks’s description of Scorsese’s filmmaking approach: “The simplest, most direct way is usually the most heart-felt, the way which technology can interfere the least in the way of the emotion.” Both the Criterion Collection’s DVD and Blu-Ray releases of The Last Temptation of Christ also feature a decent interview with Peter Gabriel, who scored the film. Gabriel talks a little about how he and Scorsese worked toward “avoid[ing] the clichés of Christ goes to the movies […] Marty had some strong opinions of some people he wanted me to integrate and whose work he wanted me to play with. I spent some time in the National Sound Archive doing some research and trying to educate myself a bit. And although I didn’t try and master Arabic scales, I was just trying to soak in some of the feelings and find key performers that could bring power and passion.” Other Interesting Trivia : Also according to Ehrenstein’s liner notes, director Franco Zeffirelli pulled his Young Toscanini from the 1988 Venice Film Festival line-up when he heard that Temptation would also be screening that year. Zeffirelli hadn’t yet seen Scorsese’s film when he made that appropriately theatrical gesture. But he still was outraged by Temptation , saying that it was “truly horrible and completely deranged.”

Shots Fired: Azealia Banks Accuses White Girl Rapper Iggy Azalea Of Being Racist After Making XXL’s Freshman List… “I’m Pro Black Girl!”

LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUUUUMBLE! XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class of 2012 list hasn’t even been out more than a few hours and already there is some beef brewing over who was chosen for it. Although, Azealia Banks and Iggy Azalea are both relative newcomers to the game, don’t expect either of them to have each other’s backs. Azealia hopped on Twitter to put Iggy on blast for not deserving to be on the cover of XXL and the throw shots that the white girl rapper might even be a racist. She tweeted: “Iggy Azalea on the XXL freshman list is all wrong. How can you endorse a a white woman who called herself a “Runaway slave master”? Whatever. Sorry guys. But I’m pro black girl. I’m not anti white girl, but I’m also not here for any1 outside of my culture trying to trivialize very serious aspects of it. In any capacity. *kanye shrug* If u hate my music now because of how I feel about this then I guess it’s my loss. I’ll take that loss.” Azealia was referencing Iggy’s “D.R.U.G.S” track where she starts off the verse “When the relay starts, I’m A Runaway Slave… Master,” which is a bit awkward (depending on how you decipher the lyrics). However, Azealia Banks’ rant about Iggy comes off as bitter, especially for a newbie in the game [She’s already taken jabs at both Nicki Minaj and Kreayshawn in the past, as well]. Iggy responded: Don’t bother including my @ name in any of ur salty thoughts either cause… I’m #blockinthata$$ today!!!! First female freshman. Ever. Period. Thanks world! I used to stick XXL on my bedroom door, now I’m on the cover. Life is great. What do you think of the hip hop girl beef? Source More On Bossip! Serve And Protect: At Cissy Houston’s Request, Authorities Will Launch An Investigation Into The Source Of The Leaked Pictures Of Whitney Houston’s Body

According to RadarOnline : Whitney Houston’s family, spearheaded by her mother, Cissy, is asking law enforcement to look into death scene photos that were leaked to the media in the days after the pop superstar died at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, including one pic of her body being wheeled out on the gurney in a body bag, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. A few days after Whitney passed away on February 11, a media outlet (not RadarOnline.com) published a photo of Houston in a body bag on a gurney being taken out of the hotel. The entire floor was on lockdown, and the area was secured by the Beverly Hills Police Department. There is surveillance video from the hallway of the person who took the picture of Whitney in the body bag, and the Houston family wants to know who it is and have asked for an investigation into the leak of the photos. The Houstons have been told by cops that after her case is officially closed, they can look into the matter. It might not be the the Beverly Hills Police Department that would handle that, but this is very important to the Houston family to know. “They need and deserve to know who took the pictures, and if the person profited from it,” a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com. We hope that there is a way to track down the sick son (or daughter)-of-a-beyotch that did this. They deserve the ridicule and judgement of the general public! Image via WENN More On Bossip! Seth Rogan Disses Chris Brown: “You Can Literally Beat The Isht Out Of A Nominee And They’ll Ask You To Perform Twice At The Grammy’s” [Video]

Miranda Lambert isn’t the only one calling Breezy out for being allowed to perform twice at the Grammys. At this past Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards, comedian Seth Rogen took a jab at R&B singer Chris Brown. “You saw a few hateful things, they don’t let you within a few hundred yards of the Oscars,” Rogen said at the awards ceremony, referring to Oscar producer Brett Ratner being fired over offensive gay comments. “You can literally beat the sh-t out of a nominee and they’ll ask you to perform twice at the Grammys.” The crowd, which offered the occasional chuckle to Rogen’s routine, erupted in a mix of shock and encouragement after the Judd Apatow actor’s comment. The Twitter community seemed to react similarly. “How about Seth Rogen for Oscar host-funny AND he takes on domestic violence with the Chris Brown situation. Love,” wrote one user. “What Seth Rogen said about Chris Brown #SoMuchLove,” tweeted another. Brown stirred controversy when he performed twice at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony, just three years after abusing then-girlfriend and pop sensation Rihanna. Is this funny to you? Rogan kinda has a point, no? Do you agree or do you think he was being a hater? Source WENN More On Bossip!
