Movieline at the Midpoint: 5 Candidates to be the Next Betty White of 2010

Today marks the midpoint of 2010 — and thus the midpoint of our year in movies and TV. Join Movieline in both taking stock and looking ahead. If there was one constant that unified the first six months of 2010, it was that everyone loved Betty White. Seriously — saying something mean about America’s Grandma this year was akin to stealing candy from a baby while kicking a puppy. You just didn’t go there. But now that we’re on the other side of 2010, White has probably peaked — unless someone starts a Facebook campaign to get her become an astronaut or something. So which former icon will return to glory in the next six months? Movieline speculates ahead.

The Red Trailer: Helen Mirren, Bad Ass

There are a number of reasons why the new trailer for Red — about a retired CIA agent who calls his old team back together to stop an assassin — looks derivatively boring, not the least of which being: Didn’t Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman already make this movie? It was called Lucky Number Slevin , and it stunk of warmed over Tarantinoisms and madcap violence. Not even wild horses could drag me — wait, is that Helen Mirren firing a massive machine gun at a moving car? One second, let me click over and pre-order tickets.

Joan Rivers: ‘You Never Dwell on the Success’

Joan Rivers probably works harder in 2010 than every standup comic who ever called her groundbreaking. In the new documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work , the legend repeatedly caws that she is no artifact. She’s riding creaky elevators down New York cellars and wisecracking to crowds. She’s on TV. She’s selling a stage show overseas. And she’s never satisfied with her 50 years of performing — there’s too much money to be made, too many opportunities to pounce upon, and too many disappointments to overcome. She is work. But as the film proves, she is also a scratchy sage who can articulate the thrills and pitfalls of ambition better than any of her colleagues in the mic-brandishing game. Movieline phoned the 77-year-old comic great yesterday to discuss the A Piece of Work , the flattery of Johnny Carson’s resentment, her favorite comedians, and the failures (including the suicide of her husband Edgar) she refuses to forget.

REVIEW: No Rest For the Wicked in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work

In Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s illuminating but not lacerating documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, the comic says, “No man has ever told me I look beautiful. They’ve said, ‘You look great, you look terrific.’ But never beautiful.” Implicit in that bald statement is a sense of longing, the kind of thing you don’t expect from a woman with the everyday vocabulary of a sailor on shore leave.

Defiant Joan Rivers Bashes Late-Night Hosts, Insists She is ‘Blackballed’

Joan Rivers hasn’t made much of a secret about her hatred for NBC, from which she says she was banned 25 years ago after striking her doomed late-night hosting deal with Fox. Save for her triumphant return to the network on Celebrity Apprentice , she has been virtually off its air since the Carson era. Furthermore, she told an audience Monday at the Tribeca Film Festival, she’s a late-night pariah across the board. As you can imagine, she wasn’t happy about it.
