Backstreet Boys’ A.J. McLean Back In Rehab

McLean Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Just as Backstreet Boys fever is back in full force as the guys gear up to hit the road with New Kids on the Block this summer comes news that BSB’s A.J. McLean has returned to rehab. “For personal reasons, I’ve checked myself into a rehab clinic,” McLean said in a statement to MTV News. “With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and at my best. Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends’ privacy during this time. I’ll see you really soon.” TMZ reports that sources close to the pop star say he has been “out of control” as of late due to issues with substance abuse. Reportedly, he was under the influence during much of the Backstreet Boys cruise last month. He allegedly entered rehab, his third time in a decade, because his issues were affecting the planning stages of the NKOTBSB tour, set to begin this June. A rep for the singer had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. However the singer did leave some messages for his fans on Twitter that alluded to a possible upcoming stint in rehab. “Thank u all for my bday wishes and tweets:)! Its gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm! Ttfn!” he wrote January 9. One day later, he added, “Hey all wish me luck! This is gonna be an amazing year for me and all around me! I love u all and appreciate all the love and support” McLean previously entered rehab in July 2001, just as the Backstreet Boys planned to kick off their Black & Blue world tour. He also went to rehab the following year in 2002. “[A.J.] came to us yesterday and said, ‘Guys, I need help,’ ” group member Brian Littrell told MTV News in 2001. “I looked at him in the eyes and said, ‘I’m proud of you.’ That’s the first time he said it to any of us: ‘Guys, I have a problem, and I wanna better myself and better the group and better our situation.’ ” Related Artists Backstreet Boys

Rihanna Set To Appear As Vogue Cover Girl

The singer shared with her fans that she is the latest star to be a Vogue cover girl. In addition, she was shot by one of the fashion world’s biggest photographers. “Just wrapped my first American Vogue cover shoot with Annie Leibovitz…Rah!” the singer revealed on her Twitter . “#SEXY” Little else is known about the issue in which Rihanna will appear, and a rep had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time, but sexy has certainly been the theme of many of Barbadian beauty’s other magazine shoots. She frequently appears semi-nude or looking incredibly high-glam when she sits down for photos. For a recent Interview shoot, the Loud singer appeared in sexy, sleek gowns. She graced the cover of Seventeen over the summer looking fresh, with a big smile on her face. And, her July Elle cover showed Rihanna looking fierce in a bedazzled multi-colored mini. Rih kept things even steamier while she was promoting her 2009 album, Rated R . She frequently appeared wearing very little or nothing in promo shots and photo shoots related to the release. When she landed on the cover of the January 2010 issue of GQ , she was completely topless. Rihanna recently shot a video for Nicki Minaj’s “Fly.” The two ladies were seen getting “flirty” on the set, as they tweeted a photo of themselves being friendly with one another. “Me and Nikki in our new crib, lol! Is Britney Spears Still An Underdog?

As ‘Hold It Against Me’ tops charts, is this the year she drops the label? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Despite selling out stadiums and having her singles, including her newest one, “Hold It Against Me,” shoot to the top of the charts , Britney Spears always seems to have an air of underdog about her. After rising to the top of the pop ranks, Spears suffered some personal setbacks that she can’t seem to shake even in the wake of professional triumph. So, is 2011 the year Spears finally loses the stigma? MTV News asked a few experts to weigh in. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton compared the Britney of today to the Britney of her pop heyday in the early part of the millennium. “I think Britney is still an underdog in comparison to her former self,” he said. The last big sit-down interview Spears did was in 2008 for her documentary “For the Record.” And aside from smaller magazine write-ups, Spears has managed to stay out of the usual rounds of doing press, an aspect of her public persona that may contribute to the idea that she is an underdog. “Britney’s been an underdog for, like, four years. There’s gonna come a point where we’re gonna have to stop considering her an underdog,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello said. “I still think people do. She’s recluse for all intents and purposes. I mean, she doesn’t do any press, so I think as long as that mystery surrounds her, people will think of her as an underdog.” But, Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt notes that being somewhat of a recluse does not make Spears a pop underdog. “I don’t know if she’ll ever be an underdog on the pop charts,” Greenblatt said. “No matter what goes on with her personally … if she brings them something and it’s good enough, people take it and put it at the top of the Billboard chart.” Do you consider Britney Spears an underdog? She’s publicly buried the hatchet with Madonna and Aguilera — sharing a three-way kiss with the pair at the 2003 VMAs — and never really paid much attention to the hype of other so-called rivalries. “Since the beginning of her career, she’s always been pitted against whatever big pop person there is,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello explained. “I feel like artists have had rivalries with Britney and she hasn’t really had rivalries with them,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt added. “She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust.” While Brit has managed to stay on top all these years, a new pop princess might give her a run for her money. “I think Gaga’s already been talking about what she is gonna do. She has said that her album is going to be more than just dance songs, and I’m guessing that Britney might be making a different type of album, which is great, because in that sense, Brit and Gaga don’t have to compete,” Perez Hilton said of any potential new rivalry. “They’re each doing their own very distinct thing.” Greenblatt agreed: “It just seems like they’re operating on different wavelengths right now. I mean, Britney’s proven herself over such a longer period of time than Gaga has. I don’t think that Gaga can just wipe her off the pop royalty board.” At the end of the day, it’s not at all about competition, Cantiello explained. “Britney’s going in the super dance route and Gaga’s doing a super personal album,” he said. “It comes a point where we’ve got to stop comparing the two.” Plus, it’s hard for these two to really ever compete with one another, since Gaga has admitted to waving the Britney flag . “I was 13 when Britney became a star,” she said in 2009. “I was amazed by the level of the superfan that Britney created. One of MTV News’ 11 for ’11, we can barely keep up with this Kardashian as she aims for the music charts. By Jocelyn Vena Kim Kardashian Photo: Getty Images Since becoming a reality TV star, Kim Kardashian has branched out to become quite the mogul thanks to clothing, perfume and book deals. Now Kim is at work on yet another venture, heading into the world of pop music. Could 2011 be the year Kim becomes as well known for her bangin’ music as her bangin’ figure? We don’t know yet but it makes her one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11. After Kim was spotted hanging out with Kanye West last fall, fans began to wonder if West and the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star might be working on music together . “[Kanye’s] a musical genius, so I would be honored to work with Kanye,” Kim told MTV News of a possible collaboration. “It’s all in fun. We’re just trying to have a good time.” Kardashian soon hit the studio with Kanye. She got some encouragement from her pal, Ciara , who also confirmed that the The-Dream was onboard to make music with the reality starlet. On New Year’s Eve, partygoers at Tao in Las Vegas got to jam to Kim’s first single, “Turn It Up.” . While she has Hype Williams directing her first music video, Kim is still playing shy about her intentions in the music industry. “You’re going to have to wait and watch the show,” she said about the upcoming “Kourtney & Kim Take New York.” It’s kind of in [Ciara’s] world and not mine. … I’m having fun — that’s all I’ll say, but you’ll definitely see it all unfold on the show.” Do you think Kim has what it takes to make it as a pop star? Kristen Stewart Is An ‘Incredible’ Cook, Garrett Hedlund Says

By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart loves to cook, and it seems that her co-stars love to try her creations. When MTV News caught up with “Country Strong” and “On the Road” star Garrett Hedlund, he only had the nicest things to say about Stewart’s culinary abilities. “You got to try the tortilla soup!” he raved. “It’s incredible. She’s honed it.” Back in October, Stewart opened up about cooking for Hedlund and the rest of the “On the Road” cast, noting that her best dish was the tortilla soup. “I didn’t bake; I cooked a lot, though. I was the only girl on set,” she said. “I think I can do a really, really good, terrific tortilla soup. That was my ‘On the Road’ dish.” Stewart has also thrown big bashes for her pals, proving that her cooking goes far beyond just soup. “I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,” she recalled of a dinner party she threw last year. “I shouldn’t say that I cook anymore. There was like a big BBQ situation and, like, a bunch of steaks and veggies, and I made chicken piccata. I’m so embarrassed right now. But I made homemade marinara sauce starting at, like, 2 in the afternoon. It wasn’t done until 8. It was incredible. The ‘Twilight’ cast showed up.” In the past, Taylor Lautner revealed some of Stewart’s other delicious dishes . “Like, OK, you know kumquats?” he asked. “There’s apparently a fruit called loquats. Yeah, I didn’t know either. And she made a loquat pie.” With all this talk about Stewart’s cooking abilities, does Hedlund have any skills in the kitchen? “I’m pretty much a klutz in the kitchen.
