Pete Rock Wanted To Assist Lupe Fiasco On ‘T.R.O.Y.’ Remake

‘I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out,’ Pete Rock says about ‘Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free).’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pete Rock Photo: MTV News Pete Rock and CL Smooth ‘s “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” is an iconic, classic and unforgettable track that hip-hop fans across the world hold near and dear. But as special as the 1992 track is to the listener, it means even more to the creator, who originally made the track in dedication to his fallen friend Troy “Trouble T Roy” Dixon. So when producer Pete Rock first heard Lupe Fiasco ‘s remake, “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free),” on the radio last week, he was quite upset. “At that point, my emotions were working — I’m still thinking about Heavy D and Troy is a dear friend to me, and my emotions got the best of me, and I expressed myself on Twitter,” Pete Rock told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on Tuesday, a week after Lupe released his single. Dixon, a former member of the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, passed away in 1990 after an accidental fall while he was out on tour. Two years later, Pete Rock and his partner CL Smooth released “T.R.O.Y.” to pay homage. The song took on even greater meaning for Rock after Heavy D, his cousin, passed away in November 2011. The Soul Brother said he was approached by Lupe’s label and management to use his classic beat for their new track. Rock agreed, under the one condition: that he was involved in the recording process. “I thought from that point I would be involved with Lupe and being in the studio, tweaking the beat, but I never heard from the record label, and then I turn on the radio, and hear it on the radio,” Rock explained. Instead of involving Pete Rock, Lupe and his team re-created the beat from the original 1967 Tom Scott sample from which “T.R.O.Y.” was crafted. “No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one,” Rock tweeted after hearing the track. “I’m not flattered @ all. Dat sh– is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f—in self. Smh.” The two soon got on the phone, and their respective differences were thought to be solved. “I just got off da phone with lupe, we worked out our difference and we bout to get it in,” Pete tweeted May 23. “Gonna be epic and we gonna give Troy and hev the proper respect they deserve and make history.” The very next day, an irate Lupe phoned into the “Sway in the Morning” radio show and blasted Pete Rock for what he said was a premature tweet. “He wasn’t supposed to say that,” Lupe said in response to Pete’s tweet about plans to collaborate, which has now been deleted from his account. “He was supposed to say the same sh– he said on the phone: ‘Yo, man, it was my bad, that was wack, it was f—ed up for me to say that, it was disrespectful, I was 100 percent in the wrong, I apologize.’ That’s what he was supposed to say.” The two artists clearly have different views, but Pete contends that his aim was to make peace. “When he called, he was upset, and I just tried to talk him through that and say, ‘Look, man, at the end of the day, let’s just fix this thing,’ ” Rock explained to MTV News. “My whole goal was to just squash this thing, fix the music and just move on.” Pete said he’s still a Fiasco fan — naming “Paris, Tokyo” and “Kick, Push” as two of his favorite songs — but he also stands by his original condition: If anyone is to remake “T.R.O.Y.,” he wants to be involved. “If you’re using my track, I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out,” he said. “They Reminisce Over You” has already been redone several times — on mixtapes as well as commercially released albums. Rock said he can’t control the unauthorized mixtape versions, but he would like to be a part of all official remakes, as he was on Mary J. Blige’s 1993 What’s the 411? Remix album. “The Mary J. Blige remix was dope because she involved us and she put CL Smooth on her remix,” he said. What do you think about Lupe Fiasco’s “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)”? Sound off below! Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Colin Farrell also up for Best On-Screen Transformation at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. On-screen transformations aren’t purely dominated by Autobots and Decepticons. Actors can undergo their own forms of cinematic overhauls too, from makeup-heavy makeovers to complete 180-degree turns against type to — as the case may be — shocking returns to one’s original form. All of these and more are represented in the Best On-Screen Transformation category at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . This year’s nominees include the twice-nominated Colin Farrell for his dirtbaggy turn in “Horrible Bosses” and “Hunger Games” favorite Elizabeth Banks’ perfectly pink metamorphosis as the irrepressible Effie Trinket, among others. There’s no shortage of worthy candidates for the Best On-Screen Transformation award, but which nominee will walk away feasting on Golden Popcorn? You can make that choice for yourself by voting over at MovieAwards.MTV.com — but first, let’s re-examine each of the nominees, shall we? Colin Farrell, “Horrible Bosses” The Irish actor is the epitome of the leading man: dark-haired, dark-eyed, smoky-voiced, with an enormous list of credits to his name including “S.W.A.T.” and his Golden Globe-winning turn in “In Bruges.” None of those qualities are on display in Farrell’s “Horrible Bosses” performance as coke fiend Bobby Pellitt, a balding, overweight son of a you-know-what. His physical transformation is as shocking as Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman of “Tropic Thunder” fame. It’s no less award-worthy, either. Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games” Banks was a huge “Hunger Games” fan well before the movie ever got into motion, and her adoration for the world of Panem shines brightly through her performance as the bubbly Effie. It’s no easy task trying to recognize the “Zack and Miri” actress beneath the layers upon layers of pink-and-pale powder, but trust us, she’s there — and she’ll be there for many years to come, thanks to the huge success of the first “Hunger Games” film. Johnny Depp, “21 Jump Street” We did it, guys! No, seriously, we did — MTV News long championed for a Depp cameo in Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star delivered with flying colors. Aside from the fact that Depp is virtually unrecognizable in the role, it’s the hilarious and astonishing way that his part plays out that proves just how much of a transformation this “Jump Street” throwback really was for the Oscar-nominated actor. Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn” As Jamie Foxx and Philip Seymour Hoffman will happily tell you, getting under the skin of real-life historical figures is a great way to win yourself an Oscar. That tactic didn’t work for Williams at this year’s Academy Awards, but it could very easily lead to a Golden Popcorn trophy at the Movie Awards on Sunday. Williams is virtually unrecognizable as Monroe, slipping into the iconic entertainer’s tragic life with ease. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” If I were a betting man, I’d put money on Mara taking home the Best On-Screen Transformation award. Seriously, did any of these other candidates get their no-no parts pierced for their roles? I didn’t think so! Beyond the long-term physical adjustments she made to her own body, Mara embraced punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander’s cold and calculating personality wholeheartedly, convincing us beyond a shadow of a doubt that she truly was the girl who played with fire. The Avengers Sink Battleship at the Box Office

Another Monday morning, and thus another look at what carnage The Avengers has wrought at the weekend box office. And while things aren’t as bad as they may look at first for Battleship and the rest of the competition, they’re not what you’d call pretty. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $55,057,000 ($457,078,000) Screens: 4,249 (PSA $12,958) Weeks: 3 (Change: -46.6%) Marvel’s megahit settled into No. 10 all-time in terms of domestic gross, No. 6 all-time in terms of global gross, and became the highest-grossing US release ever for Disney… in three weeks . It should wind up in top three in all the major box-office categories by the time it’s done, leaving unanswered only the question of where it will stand two months from now against The Dark Knight Rises . Which I’m sure is a question you are very much preoccupying yourself with. Anyway, hats off to all. 2. Battleship Gross: $25,300,000 (new) Screens: 3,690 (PSA: $6,856) Weeks: 1 Did Hasbro and Universal want a better domestic turnout for their huge-budget board-game spectacular? Of course they did. Is this the worst-case scenario for either/or/both? Hardly, especially after a foreign run that has already pulled in $215 million. John Carter it’s not , though don’t be surprised if you happen to see at least one head rolling around the studio lot sometime in the next or two. Whose will it be? Place your wager in the comments! 3. The Dictator Gross: $17,415,000 ($24,456,000) Screens: 3,008 (PSA $5,790) Weeks: 1 On the one hand, not a terrible showing on a congested weekend for an R-rated comedy full of Sacha Baron Cohen’s usual shtick. On the other, shtick aside, we finally get an original script not based on a board-game, a self-help book, a ’60s TV show, etc., and it lurches quietly into third place. I feel like we need to support these things on principle, folks. So what if you only laugh four times in 80 minutes? It’s better than throwing up in your mouth four times or renouncing moviegoing altogether, no? OK, don’t answer that. 4. Dark Shadows Gross: $12,770,000 ($50,908,000) Screens: 3,755 (PSA $3,401) Weeks: 2 (Change: -57.0%) Oy: A 57 percent drop in week two for a Johnny Depp film — his worst since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End plunged 61.5 percent in 2007. Of course, that was after a $139 million Memorial Day opening , so… yeah. Perspective. Not good. 5. What to Expect When You’re Expecting Gross: $10,500,000 (new) Screens: 3,021 (PSA: $3,476) Weeks: 1 Yikes! And the reviews were so good , too. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. Michael Fassbender’s Oscar ‘Lesson’

Happens to the best of us: “‘At the beginning people [say], “You’re going to be going to the Oscars ,” and you’re like, “Whatever, doesn’t matter, don’t think so.” But after a while it does penetrate. After a while you’re like, “Anyway, so I’m going to the Oscars…”‘ He laughs. ‘And you start to believe it. And I did. I thought I was going. And then I found out I wasn’t and I was upset. I was very upset by it. The first reaction was “What the fuck…?”‘ He sounds frustrated that he had let himself get sucked in. ‘It’s a vanity thing. It does become important to you. And it shouldn’t.’ On reflection, he decided that he had learned something about misplaced priorities. ‘A good little lesson.'” [ GQ ]

Also in Tuesday morning’s Biz Break: Horizon Movies picks up an ode to ’70s and ’80s thrillers, Martin Scorsese is driving a new Rolls Royce pic, movies are top for consumers, and more… Thunder Run Gets Go Ahead Ahead of Cannes, Freedom Films has partnered with Paradox Entertainment in a “substantial” domestic P&A financing arrangement for the CG 3-D action thriller Thunder Run . Matthew McConaughey, Sam Worthington and Gerard Butler are attached. The story centers on the bloody capture of Baghdad by American forces at the onset of the Iraq War, when three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of five million, igniting a three-day blitzkrieg, which military professionals often refer to as a lightning strike. Hyde Park International is handling sales at the Cannes Market. Horizon Movies Takes North American Rights to Mr. Hush Kino Lorber’s Horizon Movies label picked up the film, described as an ode to the horror movies of the ’70s and ’80s. Set in an idyllic Pennsylvania town, the film tells the story of Holland Price, a devoted husband and loving father, who, unbeknownst to him, becomes the target of evil and dark forces. Around the ‘net… Consumers Are Pleased with Movies; Other Media Not So Much Respondents to an American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) gave motion pictures a score of 76 on a 100-point scale, up from 73 in 2011. Movies scored over broadcast and cable TV news programs, subscription TV and more, Deadline reports . Bully Director: Mitt Romney Apology ‘Fell Short’ Last week the Washington Post reported that while a student at Michigan’s elite Cranbrook Academy, the future presidential candidate and a group of friends confronted a classmate they suspected of being gay and pinned him down to cut off his long hair. “This could be a true presidential moment for Mitt Romney,” Hirsch told THR . “My hope is that he would recognize that we are past framing bullying as horse play or pranking around. We need our leaders to call it as it is.” Martin Scorsese Driving Rolls Royce Pic Martin Scorsese is teaming with Lord Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas to produce Silver Ghost , a drama based on the true story of the founding of Rolls Royce that will be a co-production between Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and Zuma Productions, Variety reports . Career Watch: The Commodification of Johnny Depp Johnny Depp’s career has been set on cruise control for years, and it’s worked splendidly. He’s Hollywood’s highest-paid actor along with Will Smith, received not one but two Golden Globe nominations in 2011 (for two of his worst films) and is happy getting paid stupid amounts of money even though he agrees it’s ridiculous and does not find it stimulating, Thompson on Hollywood reports .

Dark Shadows Slumps Behind History-Making Avengers

Johnny Depp wanted his and Tim Burton’s gothic vampire comedy Dark Shadows to be anything but Twilight . Mission accomplished, I suppose: The film fizzled into a very distant second place behind another jaw-dropping performance by The Avengers , which continued to rewrite the blockbuster history books in its second weekend. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $103,163,000 ($373,182,000) Screens: 4,349 (PSA $23,721) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3%) This week in record-breaking: En route to the $1 billion threshold — which it reached Sunday — Disney’s superhero juggernaut stole the distinction of best second weekend ever from Avatar (whose own mark was $75.6 million) and experienced the best-ever second-weekend hold by a film that opened to more than $120 million. (We’ll no doubt get obscurer and obscurer as this thing rolls on.) It also became the fastest movie to reach $300 million and then $350 million domestically. Most observers conclude that a top-three all-time berth is likely on the domestic front — displacing The Dark Knight — but perhaps more mind-blowing is the likelihood of Joss Whedon’s film to rocket all the way to No. 4 all-time globally — behind Avatar, Titanic and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 — within the the next week . And it’s still got Tuvalu’s GDP beat . What can one say, other than, “Good luck, Battleship “? 2. Dark Shadows Gross: $28,805,000 (new) Screens: 3,755 (PSA: $7,671) Weeks: 1 The long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling performed pretty much as well as you might expect a long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling to perform: Soft — at least soft by Burton/Depp standards , which have been good for at least twice Dark Shadows ‘ opening two of the last three times they got together (2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ). Meanwhile, from atop its mountain of Avengers cash, Disney snickers knowingly in anticipation of the sixth installment of the lucrative Depp/Verbinski franchise it has on the way next summer in the way of The Lone Ranger AND the potential for Burton/Depp to rekindle their box-office fire with an Alice in Wonderland sequel. John Carter who ? 3. Think Like a Man Gross: $6,300,000 ($81,917,000) Screens: 2,052 (PSA $3,070) Weeks: 4 (Change: -22.3%) Meanwhile, how about that lucrative Tim Story/Taraji P. Henson partnership?! What? No? OK. 4. The Hunger Games Gross: $4,400,000 ($386,902,000) Screens: 2,531 (PSA $1,738) Weeks: 8 (Change: -21.3%) Gary Ross/Lenny Kravitz ? Ugh, fine . 5. The Lucky One Gross: $4,055,000 ($53,721,000) Screens: 2,839 (PSA: $1,428) Weeks: 4 (Change: -24.5%) Someone had to finish fifth. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter .
