G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu and star Dwayne Johnson popped up to unveil a new trailer for the exhibition pros Monday night at CinemaCon, where The Rock was dubbed the CinemaCon Action Star of the Decade and described with a nickname that’s been floating around here and there for months: “Franchise Viagra.” The new Rock-centric trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation seems to agree with that sentiment. So watch it below and discuss: Could Johnson’s muscle-bound box office draw enhance just any limp franchise’s potential? Johnson earned the moniker by helping Fast Five to a box office bonanza last year, but he also notably made the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel a hit (and let’s not forget his film career beginnings, turning an appearance in the Mummy franchise into his own starring spin-off). With Chu behind the camera ramping up the cool factor on G.I. Joe 2 — Bees that turn into bombers! Rappelling mountainside ninja fights! Bruce Willis! — this new trailer makes it known that the sequel is Johnson’s film. His Roadblock is the solid wall of man meat who leads the Joes on a quest to clear their names and avenge their fallen brethren after Cobra Commander infiltrates the government and turns their own country against them. The whole “betrayed agent avenging comrades to clear their name” thing has been done to death recently ( Salt , Haywire , The A-Team , The Losers , Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol , ugh make it stop), but halfway through the trailer I realized that yes, I will watch just about anything The Rock is in. Especially if he’s all bronzed and sweaty, which is just about always. Verdict: G.I. Joe 2 was more enticing when it was all mountain ninjas and Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis in the back of that El Camino before all this silly plot reveal business, but on the other hand it has The Rock, and therefore I am in.
Merely one week after having to dance for his life against Gavin DeGraw in the bottom two, Jaleel White is back on top of the Dancing With the Stars heap. Tying for first in last night’s Motown Week performances, White and Kym Johnson danced the cha cha to The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” White admitted during rehearsal, “I’ve definitely been feeling a lot of stress this week and it’s taken its toll on me.” You wouldn’t know it after this: Jaleel White & Kym Johnson – Rumba (DWTS Week 6) “You’re back,” head judge Len Goodman announced, proudly. Bruno Tonioli, never one to hold back, added, “That was biggest sizzler of the season! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and you’ve come back big time.” Carrie Ann Inaba was the final judge to weigh in on the former Family Matters actor, saying, “Consider the A game brought to the table. Welcome back.” For Jaleel, who has battled tabloid adversity in the form of accusations by Bridget Hardy , as well as the standard DWTS scrutiny, it was a triumphant return indeed. After having to deal with those teasers-for-the-teaser annoyance, we now have the actual teaser trailer for writer/director Rian Johnson‘s Looper, his futuristic sci-fi thriller featuring a Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt face-off, both playing the same character. Looper ! The full trailer for writer-director Rian Johnson’s latest is here, planting Joseph Gordon-Levitt in time-travel assassin mode — at least until his older self (Bruce Willis) is one day sent back to the past to become his own next victim. What’s a smirky, brash young hit man to do? Don’t let him escape, that’s for… Oh, wait. There he goes. The rest is what it is, blending Johnson’s sleekness and class with pure sci-fi/action pulp. Works for me, even if the other genre angle generally doesn’t. Take Jeff Daniels’s word for it: “This time-travel crap just fries your brain.” Thoughts? [via ENTV ]
‘Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes,’ Rian Johnson tells MTV News of Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a young Bruce Willis. By Kara Warner Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Looper” Photo: Sony Thanks to the highly anticipated debut of the “Looper” teaser trailer Thursday, there is almost two minutes of brand-new, action-packed footage to overanalyze and dissect. We’ve already highlighted five key scenes to watch out for in the teaser, and now, MTV News is proud to bring you exclusive expert commentary from the film’s writer/director, Rian Johnson. Johnson was visibly excited for fans to see the teaser, particularly the first glimpses of the gritty future reality of the film’s setting and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in action as a young Bruce Willis . “The beginning here is just setting up the premise of the Loopers and what they do, which is the same in the movie,” Johnson explained. “We take some time to get you into the world. You can kind of tell from the look of it that the world is a very grounded science-fiction world; it’s not a big CG world. We did lots of practical stuff and tried to keep it feeling very real and near-future.” With regard to Gordon-Levitt’s makeup to look like Willis, Johnson said, although he looks impressive in the teaser, he can’t wait for fans to see the “Dark Knight Rises” actor’s physical performance in the finished film. “What I’m really excited about is for people to see Joe’s performance in it, because if you just see a photo or quick clips in a teaser like this, the likeness doesn’t come across as well, but when you see Joe’s performance, I think it really hits.” Johnson also hinted that, despite the blink-and-you-miss-it appearance of co-star Emily Blunt, there is more to her role than you think. “You see a quick clip of Emily Blunt, [but] there’s a whole sequence where she had to do some action work and she just kinda kicked ass. I’m excited for people to see it,” Johnson said. “Emily really held her own when it was time to get out the shotgun and do some blasting.” The “Brick” director went on to say that he just had a plain old good time making the film, particularly the action sequences, for which veteran star Willis proved to be a very key component. “It was fun for me. You see flashes of a lot of action in the movie, and this is the first time I’ve been able to do it on that scale, which is really fun, especially working with a veteran like Bruce,” Johnson said. “Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes. Bruce kind of showed us the ropes. Jaleel White wants to set the record straight about the allegedly loud and heated fight with Kym Johnson , his Dancing With the Stars partner, in rehearsal. Asked in a radio interview about it, White downplayed the incident, but first said that he couldn’t believe how much celebrity gossip publications care. “Let me tell you something about this show,” he told MYfm’s Valentine in the Morning. “I had no concept what a tabloid feeding frenzy this show is.” Jaleel White & Kym Johnson – Rumba (DWTS Week 3) It is wild how much tabloid attention it gets for such family friendly entertainment, but it is among TV’s biggest shows. In any case, White is uneasy about it. “We get to rehearsal and theres like 20 idiots in the back…with cameras and videos,” the 35-year-old actor said. “It sucks because this is our real lives.” As for the Us Weekly report that he shouted at Johnson to the point where producers had to break up a fight before it escalated, White says that’s BS. “We definitely had a disagreement last week,” he explained. “But there was no fight broken up. Our disagreement was over some of the choreography.” “She didn’t understand who Stefan Urquelle was.” Stefan, of course, being the nerdy Steve Urkel’s more suave alter ego, who recurred several times throughout Family Matters’ nine-year run. The contestants had to dance routines inspired by the most memorable year of their lives; White picked the year that Steve first turned into Stefan. Jaleel White will always be known as his Family Matters alter ego, Steve Urkel, for as long as he lives. This is the price of fame … and memorably geeky characters. He did his best to distance himself from Urkel on the Dancing With the Stars Season 14 premiere last night, however, with a foxtrot that earned him a tie for first. Partnering with Kym Johnson and employing the kind of footwork and hand placements that many pros would envy, Jaleel established himself as an early favorite.
