While they slam their ways over the awards-season hump, join me for a quick run-through of where things stand this week.

’21 Jump Street’ Characters ‘Complete One Another’

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum talk to MTV News on New Orleans set. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in “21 Jump Street” Photo: Columbia Pictures You probably know Jonah Hill from his work in comedies like “Superbad” and “Knocked Up,” and Channing Tatum is more at home in action flicks like “G.I. Joe” or “The Eagle.” So, it might surprise you that together, they make the perfect police officer. That’s how it works out in “21 Jump Street,” anyway. The hit crime show from the ’80s is headed for a big-screen reboot next spring with Hill and Tatum starring as two cops recruited to go undercover in a high school. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz traveled to the New Orleans set to catch up with the stars about their relationship to the show and their characters’ dynamic. “We complete one another with our flaws and strengths, basically,” said Hill, who co-wrote the script with Michael Bacall. Hill plays Schmidt, a brilliant young cop who has “a hard time with the courageous and physical issues of being a police officer.” So, he turns to Tatum’s character, Jenko, for help. “[Jenko] is really great at all the physical elements of being a police officer, but his character is really stupid,” Hill said. For Tatum, the experience of making the film was an entirely new one. “I’ve got to be honest: I’m about as ‘fish out of water’ as I can possibly get,” he said, adding that he knew he signed onto the role for a reason. “I signed on for Jonah, and I watched this show growing up, so this is home for me.” Chris Miller, one of the film’s directors, explained that the film version of “21 Jump Street” takes place within the same universe as the original show. “They have recommissioned the old program from the ’80s, ’21 Jump Street,’ where they take young-looking cops, but it’s new characters in the same scenario,” he said. As in every action/comedy, fans might be questioning whether one aspect of the film might overshadow the other. Hill said the tone is clear. “It’s definitely a comedy; you’re going to see a comedy. There’s tons of great jokes,” he said. “It’s really funny, but then, you’re going to see some sh– blow up, and it’s going to look really big and cool.” Check out everything we’ve got on “21 Jump Street.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Brad Pitt to Suicidal Fan: Failure Leads to Success!

Brad Pitt does it all. He acts. He has kids with Angelina Jolie . He looks handsome even with that absurd hair. And after a screening of his new film the Cary Grant Theatre in Culver City, Calif., he even helped out a distraught man at a Q&A session with fans. According to an attendee, a 30-something struggling actor announced to Pitt, Moneyball co-star Jonah Hill and the crowd that he was considering suicide. What did Pitt say? “It turned into a very awkward moment,” the attendee says, adding that the 47-year-old actor got “choked up” as he revealed his own battles to the crowd. But Pitt didn’t flinch . “He said, ‘Look, man, life is up and down, it’s a vicious cycle, but you have to go through it and deal with that,'” the observer reveals. “‘You can be down, but then you come back up again, and every failure can lead to success.'” “It was touching. As he left the theater he even stopped to talk with the guy to offer him some more words of encouragement because he was so fragile.” What more is there to say beyond: How cool is Brad Pitt?! Oscar Index: So an Artist and a Horse Walk into a Bar…

Good news and bad news this week from Movieline’s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics — the good news being that a handful of critics organizations and awards bodies have helped to draw the year’s noteworthiest (i.e. Oscar-baitiest) titles and talent of the season into their sharpest relief yet. The bad news: Sharp relief remains a total mess, with the fields in most major categories wide open heading into December. Which is the way we like it, right? Right? Ugh. To the Index…

‘SNL,’ Andy Samberg Sued By Producers Over ‘Like A Boss’

St. Louis production duo claim they wrote music for ‘Saturday Night Live’ skits ‘Shy Ronnie’ and ‘Like a Boss.’ By Gil Kaufman Andy Samberg Photo: Getty Images A St. Louis production duo who claim they created the tracks that became the “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts “Like a Boss” and ” Shy Ronnie ” have filed a lawsuit against the show and cast member Andy Samberg claiming they haven’t been properly paid for their work. StarStrukk Production members Aleric “Rick tha Rular” Banks and Monique “Foxx StarStrukk” Hines filed a lawsuit in New York Federal court last week against NBC Universal, Samberg, The Lonely Island, and Universal Republic Records for willful copyright infringement and unjust enrichment. According to The Hollywood Reporter the suit alleges that Samberg’s band, The Lonely Island, recorded the tracks submitted by the duo “verbatim,” and then added lyrics on top. Samberg performed “Like a Boss” with Seth Rogen on “SNL” on April 4, 2009 and in December of that year he got together with Rihanna for the Emmy-nominated “Shy Ronnie.” The pair told a local paper that they hooked up with Samberg through a mutual connection in California in 2008, when they submitted tracks to Lonely Island for the band’s debut album. “Like a Boss” was featured on the trio’s 2009 disc Incredibad , while “Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde” was featured in this year’s Turtleneck & Chain . In August 2010, StarStrukk told a local paper that they were excited about being nominated for an Emmy for the “Shy Ronnie” skit, which they said featured a beat they tried, unsuccessfully, to sell to local acts like City Spud and Yung Ro as well as Young Jeezy. But after not getting the credit they felt they deserved or being paid appropriately, they filed suit. Banks claims he signed a form sent by the Universal Music Group in which he stated that he was a 50 percent owner of the copyright on “Like a Boss” as the writer and producer of the tune. According to the suit, he received a response letter that only gave him 25 percent interest in the tune. But, so far, Banks says he hasn’t gotten any producer royalties or profits from the songs. A spokesperson for NBCU could not be reached for comment at press time.

Jonah Hill To Sit Down For ‘MTV First: The Sitter’

Hill will introduce an exclusive clip from the babysitting caper before a 30-minute chat Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Jonah Hill in “The Sitter” Photo: 20th Century Fox Our first extended opportunity to chat with Jonah Hill came in the summer of 2005, when we met up with the then largely unknown actor and his co-star Justin Long on the set of “Accepted.” “I wouldn’t say we’re the next Farley and Spade,” Hill told MTV News of his onscreen collaboration with Long. “I would say we’re the next Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna.” And so the comedic gauntlet was thrown down. Hill has been making us laugh ever since, cracking us up during interviews and bringing the funny in “Superbad,” “Cyrus,” “Get Him to the Greek” and many more. To celebrate his latest, “The Sitter,” and because we just have such a good time talking with Hill, we’re very proud to announce “MTV First: The Sitter,” an exclusive sit-down with the actor. On Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV, Hill and MTV News’ Josh Horowitz will take over the airwaves, where they’ll introduce a previously unseen clip from the film and chat for a bit before continuing the conversation online for a full 30 minutes. Directed by David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express”), Hill stars in the new movie as a reluctant babysitter who takes three kids into New York City because he’d rather meet up with his girlfriend than stay stuck in the suburbs. Not such a wise decision, as it turns out drug deals, car crashes and general debauchery take hilarious precedence over more mundane babysitting activities. The movie also stars Max Records, Ari Graynor, Method Man , JB Smoove and Sam Rockwell. During the “MTV First,” we’ll not only talk about “The Sitter,” but also have Jonah analyze some of the best cinematic babysitters in history, answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news about Hill’s upcoming adaptation of “21 Jump Street.” Join Jonah Hill for “MTV First: The Sitter” on Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV! 21 Jump Street Red Band Trailer: Undercover, Over-Age Cops

21 Jump Street : Not the first ’80s series that comes to mind when I think of revival-worthy properties in 2011, but it appears that Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Nick Offerman and Ice Cube are making it work in the new movie’s red band trailer . Original stars Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson-Peete are rumored to make appearances, and even if they don’t, there’s enough starpower to make this Never Been Kissed -esque high school infiltration a worthwhile venture. Mysteriously, the funniest line delivery in the whole clip belongs to a very supporting player. Click through for the full, NSFW (language) clip.
