J. Cole graces the current cover of Rolling Out Magazine and speaks on meeting with Jay-Z, Rihanna sex-tape rumors and new album. Talk about your first encounter with Jay-Z. What led to that moment? I graduated from St. John’s University. At the time, all of my friends got nine-to-five jobs and were making $30,000 to 40,000 per year. I was working at a newspaper in Queens making $8 per hour at a part-time job so that I could still do music at night. I heard that Jay-Z was recording the American Gangster album. That same night, I made two beats and I thought it would be perfect for Jay-Z. I went to the studio where Jay-Z was recording and I waited outside for three hours. His Phantom finally pulled up. I was super timid and shy. I had the CD in my hand and I tried to hand it to Jay-Z. He looked at it and said, ‘What is this? I don’t want that. Give it to one of those other guys.’ It was crushing. That was another moment. But I snapped back to reality. I knew after that, I had to go harder. That type of rejection fuels me. I believe that greatness is fueled by rejection. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team; Jay-Z had trouble getting a record deal before Reasonable Doubt; and no one wanted to sign Kanye West as a rapper. How did the second meeting with Jay-Z come about? One year later, Jay-Z heard a song through Mark Pitts. Jay called me for a meeting. It was a three-hour meeting and I played my music [for] him. We talked about President Obama and other things. Five weeks later, he offered me a record deal. Beyond music, your name was mentioned by gossip bloggers who reported that you and Rihanna had a sex tape. How did you react when you heard about it? Gossip is foreign to me. By nature, I don’t like gossip. I never was on the gossip sites. Now being on the other side, it’s annoying. A lot of people don’t know the difference between gossip and reality. They may think that you have a sex tape with Rihanna, or [that] you’re having sex with Solange because of what someone made up. But I guess it’s just something that comes with the territory. How does Cole World: The Sideline Story reflect who you are as a person? This album speaks to the type of artist I want to be. I think the album will provide thought provoking lyrics, and heartfelt stories. I want to take listeners on a ride. It shows the type of balance that I want to have as an artist. I want to be at the top of the list when it comes to rap. I want the respect of the hip-hop fans and connoisseurs. I want to be on everybody’s list. How many of you believe J. Cole chop down Rihanna??!? Check out more pics from the article and J. Cole’s New Video – “Daddy’s Little Girl”
With one of the best personal stories in show history, along with one of the smoothest voices, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. is your 2011 America’s Got Talent champion! The jazz singer surprised many by overcoming the favorites, Team iLuminate, who only finished in third place. Did you see Sharon Osbourne’s face when that result was announced? Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. and Patti Labelle Said the shocked crooner, who says he’ll use the $1 million to “invest” in his “kids’ future,” immediately after the results were announced: “Thank you so much for supporting me and believing in me, and helping me believe in myself on national television, in front of the whole world… This has been a long, hard journey. I been busting my butt out here doing this for so long, ever since I was a kid, and it’s finally paying off.” So, you tell us: Did the right act win?
This season of Big Brother was one of many twists. At times too many. The golden keys. The duo format. The one-week return of the duo format. It all felt a little convoluted at times – even by BB standards. Things really picked up in recent weeks, however, beginning with the double eviction mayhem that ousted both Daniele and Jeff, making it anyone’s game. At that point, the Big Brother 13 house was essentially Rachel Reilly and a crew of true floaters. America’s Most Hated was somehow in the driver’s seat. Not that Rache was undeserving. She came in as a painful Big Brother villain of yesteryear (okay, last year). But she was always a fierce competitor, and had morphed into someone who actually understands the social elements! In short, as we noted weeks ago, she could really win this thing! IF she could make it happen and win the final Head of Household battle against Adam Poch and Porsche Briggs, Big Brother 13 was hers to lose. But did she? She did. Rachel won part one, then part three against Porsche, then chose to face off against Porsche for the $500,000 prize, henceforth evicting Adam. “If I was in the final two, I would’ve won,” Adam said, hilariously, to Julie Chen. He’s a likable dude, but going up against Rachel, that’s a dubious claim. In any event, it came down to a jury vote between Rachel and Porsche, who may not even understand how the game works, but did deserve to be there. She floated for half the season, but really turned it up of late. Not the best strategist, no, but a mid-level contestant who opportunistically caught fire. “I hope you see something good in me also to compete in life and do something good with it,” Porsche pleaded with the jury, somewhat convincingly. In truth, the seven-member panel likely saw this as an easy call. Brendon was going with his Boo-Key, and Jeff and Jordan were clearly on Team Rachel . That meant Porsche needed everyone else. Kalia and Dani were locks to vote for her, and did so. Adam also did, for reasons unknown, knotting it at 3-3. Shelly Moore was the dealbreaker for Porsche in the end. Despite issues with Rachel, Shelly voted with her brain and handed the redhead a half million. It’s hard not to be mildly annoyed at this, given her cattiness the last two summers. At the same time, would you have preferred Adam or Porsche win? Rachel Reilly deserves due credit for doing more than win absurd games to control power. She formed alliances and kept the peace from mid-August on. Meanwhile, Jeff won $25,000 as America’s Favorite Houseguest, which fans voted for online. That was far less of a surprise than Rachel winning it all. What do you think of Reilly’s triumph, which seemed impossible a few months ago? Did the jury make the right call? Did Rachel deserve to win BB13?
‘You may never again be able to touch your face without asking yourself where those hands have been,’ one critic says of germ thriller. By Kara Warner Jude Law in “Contagion” Photo: WB Perhaps the most terrifying film opening in theaters this weekend is not one full of high-pitched screams, blood and guts, but rather the discomfort and cringing that accompanies the spread of killer germs. “Contagion” — featuring an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marion Cotillard — demonstrates how quickly a cough can turn into a worldwide epidemic, as the characters reel from the rapid progress of an airborne virus that kills within days. Ordinary citizens are forced to come to terms with disease and death, while the medical community scrambles to find a cure and control the hysteria that spreads along with the virus. With a certified fresh rating of more than 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes , “Contagion” seems to be creeping out moviegoers in the best and most realistic way possible. The Story “Global in scale but very particular in focus, ‘Contagion’ unfolds as an engrossing, believable search for Patient Zero and an effective vaccine. (‘It’s not a good time to be a rhesus monkey,’ remarks one character dryly.) More grounded in science than suspense, its rhythms evoke the steady beat of the crime procedural as the Centers for Disease Control (represented by Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and a terrific Jennifer Ehle) and the World Health Organization (fronted by Marion Cotillard) work to save lives and stem panic.” — Jeannette Catsoulis, NPR The Direction “From his very first independent films through the “Ocean’s” trilogy and the widely misunderstood, little-seen “Che,” Soderbergh has viewed human life and human actions from a voyeuristic, almost clinical perspective, and in that sense a movie about disease and science and bureaucracy — about systems, rather than people — is a perfect fit. … There’s really no arguing with “Contagion” on technical grounds. The story it tells is based on sound epidemiology (even if some individual plot events are implausible) and the composition and editing are masterful. Instead of the usual two and a half hours of a Roland Emmerich-style disaster flick, this one is an economical 105 minutes, none of them wasted.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com The Cringe Factor “What we have here is one of the finest “breakdown of society” movies I’ve ever seen. If you’re the type of person who finds the opening credits montage the most frightening aspect of Romero’s original “Dawn of the Dead,” the instigating event to the apocalypse in “Contagion” is (sigh) a very real threat. Read “Flu” by Gina Kolata — or better yet, don’t, because maybe you like sleeping at night.” — Jordan Hoffman, UGO The Final Word: Pro/Con/Pro Style “If you’re looking for some kind of poetry — some exalted dramatic arc that lifts this narrative out of the ordinary — you won’t find it here. ‘Contagion’ is as straightforward as an episode of ‘CSI,’ but it’s gripping from start to finish. Now, excuse me while I wipe down my computer keyboard. — Leonard Maltin, IndieWire “Juggling multiple plotlines proved successful in Mr. [Soderbergh]’s ‘Traffic’ (and even more so in Alejandro Gonz

Last week’s elimination of Shelly put Rachel in position to wrest control of the house in an HOH competition that featured three people she could easily beat. Did she step it up, or did Adam, the beacon of Big Brother uselessness, pull off a major upset? Could Kalia win a surprising third week in power this summer? More importantly, what “celebrity” visits made this installment one of the more absurd in awhile? THG recaps Sunday night’s Big Brother episode below … Plus 10 because Jeff and Daniele were clearly the best players in the house. You can still see their alliances going to war with each other, weeks later! Minus 15 because the producers obviously set up this competition for Rachel to win HOH. On her hands and knees covered in clear, sticky goo? Sorry. Adam didn’t do a terrible job, but his winless streak continues, save for the one veto he was allowed to win by BFF/puppet master Jeff. Weak. Minus 4 . Jordan ate some of the real sprinkles “that were left over.” Plus 3 . “We’re very similar in lots of ways.” – Kalia to Rachel. Plus 8 for this not-untrue analysis. Rachel and Kalia have both hidden behind their lead alliance member at times, but also struck with aggressive moves when needed. Kalia knows she’s the target, but doesn’t lose sleep over it at least. Plus 7 . Porsche again tries to talk “game” with hilarious results. Minus 5 . We would love to say that Adam has, somehow, positioned himself adeptly to win this because of his harmless ways. But no, he really is just bad at Big Brother . He will lose, decisively, in the next three competitions and is no threat. Minus 9 . He’s a good dude, though, and was rewarded with a visit from Tori Spelling after Rachel (of course) opened Pandora’s Box and CBS pulled a bait-and-switch, leaving the HOH stuck in there with Jessie Godderz instead. Ouch. Plus 7 . Does Jessie live in that room? He’s doing this every season. Eh, Plus 2 . Fanboy Adam maintained his dignity, mostly, even if he did tell the TMI story of calling his girlfriend “Donna.” Minus only 3 because it could’ve been worse. For instance, Rachel’s driving record is far more embarrassing. Minus 6 . Rachel makes the obvious right decision to nominate Kalia and Porsche, setting up a veto battle where Adam will be the replacement nominee, and safe, if either wins. But if the nominations stay the same, all bets are off. Plus 5 . Would Rachel actually dispatch Jordan via the back door if she could? That’s the one person remaining she’d never beat in a jury vote … Nah. Minus 5 . EPISODE TOTAL: -5. SEASON TOTAL: +71. Who’s going to win Big Brother 13?
‘It meant a lot coming from him,’ JoJo tells MTV News on VMA black carpet about Drizzy’s response. By Jocelyn Vena JoJo Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — JoJo has certainly grown up somewhere between releasing “Leave (Get Out)” back in 2004 as a 14-year-old and her very NSFW remix of Drake’s “Marvin’s Room.” As soon as JoJo dropped the sultry, sassy track , redubbed “Marvin’s Room (Can’t Do Better),” earlier this summer, blogs and music lovers went crazy over her mature voice and even more mature lyrical content. In the song, she coos lines like “F— that new girl that you like so bad/ She’s not crazy like me, I bet you like that.” Much like the Drizzy version, JoJo’s version is a swirling ode to drunk dialing that special someone, and the longing of the track seemed to resonate with folks — which is the most surprising part to JoJo, considering she drops a few F-bombs. “I was shocked!” she told MTV News on Sunday night on the VMA black carpet about the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the remix. So how did she end up recording her answer to Drake’s track? “Well, one of my friends was like, ‘Jo, you gotta hear this new Drake song!’ I loved it, and I thought Drake was really emotional and honest,” she explained. “I was like, ‘This a great record,’ so I had a little time in the car ride [on my way to the airport]. So I wrote my version in the car ride, and I landed in L.A., I went to the studio, I recorded it, and the next day I put it on the Internet, and people really, really loved it. And I was totally shocked, ’cause I was scared to use the F-word, and I didn’t know how people would respond to it.” The track, produced by Jordan Gatsby and featuring vocals from Travis Garland, is not only fan-approved, but also approved by the Canadian rapper himself. “He said I killed it and that he was really happy with everyone’s response,” she said of Drake’s reaction. “It meant a lot coming from him. It was all out of respect.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Liverpool cruised into the third round of the Carling Cup with a one-sided win over League One outfit Exeter. The Reds dominated from the start and took the lead when Artur Krysiak failed to cut out Jordan Henderson#39;s cross and Luis Suarez tucked away the loose ball. Maxi Rodriguez swept home a precise Suarez cut-back before a thunderous strike from Andy Carroll made it 3-0. Daniel Nardiello replied for Exeter late on from the spot after he was tripped in the box by Martin Skrtel. But t
