‘X Factor’ Drops Tween Supergroup InTENsity

Another of Paula Abdul’s groups, Stereo Hogzz, joins 10-person collective in the bottom two. By Adam Graham Paula Abdul on “X Factor” Photo: FOX It was a tough night for Paula Abdul’s team on Thursday’s (November 3) results episode of “The X Factor,” as two of her groups — Stereo Hogzz and InTENsity — were forced to sing for their lives after earning the lowest number of votes following Wednesday’s performance episode. In the end, InTENsity was shown the “X Factor” door, leaving Stereo Hogzz to fight another day in the competition. Unlike “American Idol,” results on “The X Factor” are not based strictly on viewer votes. The two competitors with the lowest vote totals are asked to sing one final song, with the judges ultimately deciding who goes home. In their big showdown, Houston fivesome Stereo Hogzz tackled Samantha Sang’s 1977 hit “Emotion,” which was later popularized by Destiny’s Child, while InTENsity — the group cobbled together by the judges from 10 eliminated individual singers — took on Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” InTENsity was voted off by a 3-1 vote, with Simon Cowell the lone vote for InTENsity to stay. His vote against Stereo Hoggz came just 24 hours after he said of their performance, “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you.” InTENsity’s Wednesday mash-up of “Kids in America” and “Party Rock Anthem” earned them high marks from the judges, with L.A. Reid calling the performance “fun, fun, fun” and Nicole Scherzinger dubbing it, “fun-tastic” and “fun-nomenal.” Cowell called the performance terrific while Abdul pledged that she was proud of her group. As Thursday’s show rushed toward its finish, no one from InTENsity commented on the group’s ouster, with host Steve Jones describing them as “inconsolable” while he threw to the season premiere of “Bones.” Had the judges landed on a 2-2 tie, the act with the lowest number of viewer votes would have been kicked off the show. Thursday also featured a performance from Outasight, who performed his single “Tonight is the Night,” while the top 12 opened the show with a group take on David Guetta’s “Without You.” What did you think of Thursday’s “X Factor” results show? ‘X Factor’: Rachel Crow Compared To Michael Jackson

It was a night full of high praise, with Astro, Josh Krajcik and Melanie Amaro all earning the judges’ approval as well. By Adam Graham Simon Cowell Photo: FOX There was no shortage of praise doled out by the judges on Wednesday’s (November 2) episode of “The X Factor,” with two performers hailed as budding superstars, one compared to a young Michael Jackson and a group praised as one of the world’s best bands. And those acts weren’t even considered the evening’s front-runners! Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s performances, and the compliments that followed: The Girls Following her rendition of the Eagles’ “Desperado,” Melanie Amaro was dubbed “the one to beat” in the competition by Cowell. Meanwhile, Rachel Crow’s take on “Walking on Sunshine” caused Scherzinger to compare the 13-year-old to Jackson 5-era Michael Jackson, and Drew — formerly known as Drew Ryniewicz — wowed the judges with her unorthodox take on Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” which prompted both L.A. Reid and Cowell to say the 14-year-old has the makings of a superstar. The Boys Chris Rene was surrounded by flames during his performance of the Carpenters’ “Superstar,” which Cowell said made it look like he was performing in hell. “That’s called fire, baby, ’cause he’s hot!” gushed mentor L.A. Reid. Elsewhere, pintsize rapper Astro’s blend of “Hip-Hop Hooray” and “Get Ur Freak On” — with original verses by the young MC — had Cowell praising his star quality and Scherzinger saying she wanted to take him to the club, while Marcus Canty’s mash-up of B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Bobby Brown’s “Every Little Step” had Paula Abdul calling him “a total performer.” The Groups The 10-member InTENsity took pieces of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and blended them into one “fun, fun, fun” performance, according to Reid, who echoed the other judges’ sentiments about the group. Lakoda Rayne’s vocals — especially their harmonies — were celebrated following their performance of “Landslide,” though Cowell attacked their choice of wardrobe, saying their gowns made them look like they were attending the prom. And the Stereo Hogzz kicked off the evening with a steroid-enhanced version of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” that had Abdul calling them “fantastic” and had Cowell complimenting them by saying, “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you.” Over 30s Burrito maker Josh Krajcik took on Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” and Cowell said the stark ballad came off as a song that Krajcik wrote himself. Mentor Scherzinger put it another way: “I feel like a proud mom, but we’re, like, the same age, so that doesn’t work.” Stacy Francis, after attempting a pop song last week, took ’em to church with “Up to the Mountain,” which was called “magical” and “a shining moment” by Abdul and called one of the evening’s best by Cowell, who let her kiss him onstage. And 60-year-old LeRoy Bell got decent marks for singing Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” though Reid criticized the song choice and Cowell said he felt Bell had a confidence problem. On this night, that was about as harsh as the criticism would get. One finalist will be sent home on Thursday’s one-hour live episode of “The X Factor.” It was also announced on Wednesday’s show that “The X Factor” will return next year for a second season. What did you think of the top 12 on “X Factor”? Let us know in the comments!

‘X Factor’ Castoffs Dexter Haygood, Phillip Lomax Open Up

The Brewer Boys also lament their early elimination, as five contestants were sent home after first live episode. By Jim Cantiello Dexter Haygood on “X Factor” Photo: Fox On Tuesday night, it was time to face the music. And for five “X Factor” contestants , the music said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Throughout the epic live “X Factor” debut, the judges axed five hopefuls they had been personally grooming, turning a top 17 into a top 12. MTV News was granted exclusive press access backstage to speak with the first batch of eliminated finalists just minutes after they were dropped from the show. “I killed it tonight. That’s what I feel, man!” said Memphis rocker Dexter Haygood, who delivered an over-the-top cover of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” under Nicole Scherzinger’s tutelage. During the early audition episodes, America fell in love with Haygood’s infectious energy and emotional life story, which included everything from living on the streets to fronting Xavion, the first African-American rock band to be featured on MTV. “I’m just happy to be moving on, somewhat,” said Haygood, who chalked up his onstage confusion during elimination to feeling overwhelming pressure. “Let me tell you something: Being in a competition is a lot of stress. I’m not happy to be off, but it’s a good feeling knowing that the competition [has ended],” Haygood said before rocking a sports metaphor: “If you don’t win the Super Bowl, you’re glad the damn season is over.” A downtrodden Phillip Lomax aimed to focus on the good things about his time on “X Factor.” “I’m obviously disappointed, but I have to look at this in a positive light and realize that I’ve accomplished what not many people have,” the crooner said as the sound of a cheering studio audience echoed the halls of CBS Studios. Earlier in the show, Phillip’s swinging “I’m a Believer” raised some questions about song selection among the judging panel, but Lomax insisted he was happy with what L.A. Reid picked for him. “I definitely played a hand in [picking that song] as well,” said Phillips, who got as far as he did in the competition due to his dead-on Frank Sinatra impersonation, which he abandoned for the poppier Monkees hit Tuesday night. “I thought it was a good song. Definitely out of my comfort zone, but I decided to go with what my mentor told me to do and I had faith. I still have faith. I’m still a believer,” he chuckled before censoring himself. “Sorry, that’s way too corny.” Meanwhile, teen sibling duo the Brewer Boys, who both sport Bieber hairdos, were at peace with their elimination, courtesy of teary mentor Paula Abdul — or, as they insist on calling her, “Miss Paula.” They’ll never forget Miss Paula’s “hands-on” mentoring, as well as her gaggle of Chihuahuas they befriended during the judges’ home episodes. Keep your eyes peeled for the duo — who performed a bizarre mash-up of Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl” and George Michael’s “Faith” on Tuesday — as they hope to hit the road, but in the short term, the only thing on Justin Brewer’s schedule is chilling in bed and playing a ton of “Call of Duty.” Lomax, likewise, has no beef with mentor L.A. for letting him go. “I think he’s an outstanding guy. I wish that he made a different decision, obviously, but he could only take three, and those three guys are outstanding as well. It’s a shame he didn’t pick me,” the aspiring actor shrugged before wandering the halls of CBS Studios to say his goodbyes and hopefully bump into Kim Kardashian, who was spotted nearby at the “Dancing With the Stars” stage. There was no time to chat with Simon Cowell’s eliminated girls, Tiah Tolliver and Simone Battle, who were favorites of the Brit but were never well-liked by his fellow judges. Minutes after the show went off the air, they briskly grabbed their belongings and jumped into a production van to take them back to their hotel. ‘Dancing With The Stars’: Ricki Lake Is Back On Top

But she has to share with J.R. Martinez, who also scores a 29 on Broadway night. By Kelley L. Carter Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Photo: ABC It was Broadway week on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” and naturally, the theatrics were high. The cast of Broadway’s “Sister Act” performed, as did Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth. The remaining celebrities pulled out all the stops with creative costumes and over-the-top performances. This also was the first time the celebrities danced a group performance, to “Hey Big Spender” from “Sweet Charity” and “Money” from “Cabaret.” The performance didn’t get scored, but the judges commented and thought it was a fitting tribute. As for the dances that were scored, it was a dead heat at the top of the board between war hero J.R. Martinez and former talk-show host Ricki Lake, who impressed the judges with their takes on the quickstep. Here’s how everyone fared: Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke The duo took on a tune from “Jersey Boys,” the Four Seasons’ “Walk Like a Man,” and danced the cha-cha. The judges found the performance to be a bit muted and not at all daring for a high-stakes week like this. “It was clean. It was precise. It had good timing. Each dance gives you new challenges. The cha-cha-cha has got to show rhythm. There was no rhythm. It was all too stiff. It wasn’t oily. It was a bit … starchy,” head judge Len Goodman said. 22/30 Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus The TV host was asked to do more after last week, when they found her routine to be a bit drab; this week, they took on the foxtrot and danced to a tune from “Spamalot.” The judges said the pair upped the ante and considered her performance to be a showstopper. They thought much more of her personality came out and she performed with great flair, earning her highest score in the competition. “It’s Nancy Dance-alot! I’ve seen the musical, and you captured the theme of it, and yet you did a foxtrot. Well done!” Bruno Tonioli said. 24/30 David Arquette and Kym Johnson The actor earned his highest score of the season last week, and he said he wanted to keep that momentum going and stay at the top. They danced “We Go Together” from “Grease” and did the quickstep. The judges thought it was rough around the edges but high-energy and fun. “It’s a really tough number to live up to. But as far as performance goes, I thought you completely lived up to any expectation that we’d have for ‘We Go Together’ from ‘Grease.’ It’s not easy. That was the good side. The bad side: You guys were out of sync today. But … there was a fluidity that was going. You just got a little ahead of yourself,” Carrie Ann Inaba said. 23/30 Ricki Lake and Derek Hough The former talk-show host and actress had previously dominated the leaderboard but fell last week to the #5 position after failing to impress the judges during ’80s week. Also a former Broadway star, Lake was hoping that would give her the edge during Monday night’s competition. They danced the quickstep to a track from “Guys and Dolls,” and the judges gave her a standing ovation. “You don’t need luck if you’ve got talent. And this number, you proved your talent. I loved it,” Goodman said. 29/30 Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer The activist tangoed to a track from “Phantom of the Opera,” and he was hoping his newfound confidence from last week would continue in Monday night’s performance. The judges thought it was the most aggressive they’ve seen him, but think that he needs to be pushed a little further. “It was like watching a cute little penguin trying to be a big menacing bird of prey. This is the truth: It has to be menacing. Dark. Dangerous. Naughty. The tango wants to be driven continuously. It is hard. It’s very difficult. To me, this character didn’t fit you,” Tonioli said. 19/30 Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy

‘X Factor’ Reveals 17 Finalists Before Live Shows

Teen rapper Brian Bradley, James Brown-alike Dexter Haygood and other favorites sail through to the finals. By Adam Graham Paula Abdul Photo: FOX Pint-size rapper Brian “Astro” Bradley, recovering addict Chris Rene and the formerly homeless Dexter Haygood are among the finalists on “The X Factor,” it was revealed on Tuesday’s (October 18) episode of the Fox singing competition. During the two-hour episode, the competition’s 32 remaining contestants were trimmed to 16. Those singers will face off in the live episodes, which begin next week, and ultimately try to claim the show’s $5 million recording contract. And in a last-minute twist — because of course there’s going to be a twist — one extra contestant was allowed through to the finals. Here are the 17 “X Factor” finalists:

‘Dancing With The Stars’: J.R. Martinez Heats Things Up

Ricki Lake, however, wasn’t atop the leaderboard like usual. By Kelley L. Carter J.R. Martinez Photo: ABC It was, like, totally ’80s week Monday night on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” The show opened with the Bangles performing a quick medley of “Eternal Flame” and “Walk Like an Egyptian” before the remaining celebrities kicked off their performances. Some of the stars grabbed their highest scores of the season, others (like constant score leader Ricki Lake) dropped a bit in rankings. Here’s how everyone fared: Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy The athlete was assigned the tango this week, and the twosome danced to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” The judges found the routine to be strong, sexy and powerful. “Tango is about action and reaction. Hope: You were too willowy. You’re too willowy in the body. I don’t know how Maks controls you. Having said that, I like the aggression and the attack that you put into it,” said head judge Len Goodman. 24/30 Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya Kressley said this has been the most stressful week. He took on the jive and said he couldn’t believe he was still in the game. They danced a rather colorful and cheerleader-friendly routine to Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” and the judges thought it was good, wacky fun but lacked technique. “This is a crowning achievement in madness,” Bruno Tonioli said. 19/30 Nancy Grace and Tristan Macmanus After landing one point off the bottom, the TV host took on the rumba to a Spandau Ballet track. The judges thought it was simple but very effective. Still, they wanted more and pointed out a few unstable moments. “It was appropriate. But I want to see real passion when you’re dancing. I don’t feel a connection necessarily to the dance. They’re feeling a little on the drab side to me. And I think you’re a really good dancer. I just want to see more,” Carrie Ann Inaba said. 22/30 J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff The war hero and actor danced the samba to Gloria Estefan’s “Conga,” and it took a while for the audience to simmer down. Likewise, the judges found the routine to be hot and loved his performance. “Way to go, Jose! I didn’t think you’d come out and perform anything like that, because normally guys and the samba don’t work together. But in the future, if anyone says to me how should a guy dance the dance, I’ll say just have a look at J.R,” Goodman said. 28/30 Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke The reality star took on the rumba to Lionel Richie, and the judges thought his dance to “Hello” was a very sentimental and romantic performance. “We’re starting to see Rob the heartthrob. For the first time, I see you using Cheryl as a partner, not hiding behind her, but becoming part of a unit,” Tonioli said. 25/30 Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer The duo danced the samba to Kool and the Gang’s “Get Down On It,” and unlike other weeks, the judges thought the performance was a step in the right direction. Bono was injury-free and hit the dance floor like he’s never done before. “It’s so nice to see you going strong from last week. That was the most dancing I think I’ve seen you do. Shake it, don’t break it! Good job,” Inaba said. Hard-to-please judge Goodman agreed, saying, “I think that was a gallant effort. I think you got a feel for the dance. What I liked is that you came out and really gave it a go.” 21/30 David Arquette and Kym Johnson Arquette was assigned the tango, and he and his partner performed to “Tainted Love.” He was looking to jump out from the middle of the pack and get a higher score from the judges. (It worked, he earned his highest score in the competition so far.) The judges were all unanimous in their celebration of Arquette, though Inaba and Goodman argued about whether he needed to work on his musicality. “We’re at the halfway stage now. From here on in, you have to show up or shut up. You have shown up, and it was fantastic!” Goodman said. 25/30 Ricki Lake and Derek Hough This twosome has dominated the leaderboard this season, and on Monday night, they danced the foxtrot to the Phil Collins and Philip Bailey hit “Easy Lover.” They took an ’80s-prom-like spin on the dance, and the judges thought they should have avoided doing the Roger Rabbit dance at the beginning of their routine. They felt the cheesy ’80s dance move threw off the routine. “You did the Roger Rabbit the first time, and you were way off. But when you two dance, what I love the most is how amazingly you work as a team. It’s like you’re one person,” Inaba said. 24/30 Who was your favorite celeb this week? Let us know in the comments!

‘X Factor’: Rihanna Calls Brian Bradley ‘A Mini J. Cole’

Enrique Iglesias and Pharrell Williams also help out judges, while Mariah Carey can’t make it across the pond. By Adam Graham Rihanna and L.A. Reid Photo: FOX Half of the 32 “X Factor” semifinalists performed on Thursday’s (October 13) episode, which was delayed by a day due to Fox’s coverage of Major League Baseball . The contestants ventured off to their mentors’ luxurious homes and strutted their stuff in front of them, each vying for one of 16 spots in the finals. In three out of four cases, the judges were joined by a super-special celebrity guest: In Santa Barbara, California, Paula Abdul was accompanied by Pharrell Williams ; Enrique Iglesias was coupled with Nicole Scherzinger in Malibu, California; and Rihanna was by L.A. Reid’s side at his cozy estate in the Hamptons, New York. Meanwhile, over in France, Simon Cowell was stood up by Mariah Carey , whose plane was grounded by Hurricane Irene. When it was time to make decisions, a vocal coach and a team of music producers were there to give their impressions to Cowell, whose backyard, it should be noted, houses an absolutely enormous swimming pool. Simon’s pool aside, it was Rihanna who was the episode’s MVP. Not only did she help provide Reid feedback on the contestants, but three of them performed her songs, including Seattle crooner Phillip Lomax, who took RiRi by surprise with his laid-back, Sinatra-style take on “Don’t Stop the Music.” Other singers taking on Rihanna songs were Temecula, California, Bieber-hair-sporting brother duo the Brewer Boys, who did a Tejano version of “Only Girl in the World,” and James Kenney, who took on the emotionally charged “Russian Roulette.” As a judge, RiRi seemed most taken by pint-size 14-year-old rapper Brian “Astro” Bradley, whom she compared to “a mini J. Cole.” And the brimming-with-confidence Bradley didn’t hesitate to inform RiRi of his future plans with her, telling her frankly, “We will be doing a collab one day.” The Carey-less Cowell is tasked with mentoring the girls in the competition, and the standouts included 14-year-old Drew Ryniewicz, whose slowed, hushed take on Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” was called “magic” by the tight-T-shirted one, and rugby bruiser Caitlyn Koch, whose “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” caused Cowell to praise her pitch and tone. Cowell also enjoyed Simone Battle’s piano-ballad version of the Beatles’ “Help,” but he seemed less sure about Tora Woloshin’s electro version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”: “It doesn’t quite get to me,” a puzzled Cowell explained. In the groups category, Salt Lake City, Utah, trio the Anser impressed Paula and Pharrell with their version of Pink’s “Perfect,” though Pharrell seemed perplexed by a group member’s decision to leave his striking red-framed glasses off during the performance. Virginia Beach quartet 4Shore were praised for their sound take on Brownstone’s “If You Love Me,” though Pharrell suggested the group needs to “dirty up their style a little bit.” And both the judges and the members of Lakoda Rayne seemed to agree something was “off” during their performance of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” not surprising, considering the group was Frankenstein’d together by the judges and had never previously performed together as a unit. In the category of the Olds — sorry, the “Over 30s” — 53-year-old Elaine Gibbs and 42-year-old Stacy Francis stood out with their versions of Oasis’ “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” and Prince’s “Purple Rain,” respectively. (Of the latter’s, which seemingly echoed throughout the canyons of Malibu, Iglesias marveled, “I think the neighbors heard that.”) But the most memorable performance (for all the wrong reasons) came from formerly homeless 49-year-old Dexter Haygood, who strutted like Mick Jagger and kicked his legs in the air like David Lee Roth while screaming his way through Beyonc

Joe Jonas: It’s ‘A Good Time’ To Release FastLife

Jonas Brother’s debut solo album dropped Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: Dave J Hogan/ Getty Images Joe Jonas is living the FastLife on his first-ever solo album, released Tuesday (October 11). The singer, now in his 20s, is no longer singing about the nuances of puppy love. Instead, he’s all grown up, singing about heartbreak and romantic turmoil. “It was scary in the beginning, just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” he told MTV News . After launching onto the scene as one-third of the Jonas Brothers, he’s ready to show the world his pop&B side. Boasting production and writing credits from Rob Knox, Brian Kennedy, Danja and even Chris Brown, Jonas worked closely with his crew and helped co-write almost every song on the album. In the process, he managed to snag up enough of his own solo swagger to get Lil Wayne on the remix of his second single, “Just in Love.” “I feel like this is a good time in my life to be doing this solo project,” he explained. “I’m just ready to play music. I’ve been promoting a lot and hustling around all over America and Europe, talking about the album, and now I just get to play, and that’s my favorite thing to do.” The hustle to spread the gospel of FastLife has been happening for months now. After releasing two singles, “See No More” and “Just in Love,” he recently wrapped up a tour with Jay Sean and will open for Britney Spears in Europe later this month. Jonas said he loves to perform and touring has been a way to get his music out to the masses. That music shows a new side of the star musically. Instead of pop-rock, his songs are R&B and dance tracks reminiscent of fellas like Brown. “A song I’m most excited about right now is a song called ‘FastLife.’ Performing it live is so much fun,” Jonas explained. “Doing a lot of dancing and stuff, it’s cool for people to see; it’s a little bit different. It’s fun for me to be up there doing it. “I feel like it’s a fun dance song. A lot of people want to have fun listening to it and dancing to it,” he continued. “The song is just about pretty much living life to the fullest, enjoying life, going out with your friends and having fun.” Even as he releases the album, he’s always thinking about what else he can do. “I love to make music,” he said. “I’m always creating. It doesn’t stop that creating bug. It’s just something that I always do.” Share your thoughts on FastLife in the comments below!

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Ricki Lake Nabs A Pair Of 10’s

Next closest competitor is war hero J.R. Martinez, who went from tears last week to a humorous dance. By Kelley L. Carter Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Photo: ABC It was movie night on Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars,” and the celebrities and their dance partners were hoping their stories would be the box-office draw with the judges. Once again, former talk-show host Ricki Lake ended up on top of the board, earning this season’s first perfect 10 scores from two of the three judges. Here’s how everyone fared: Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani The couple danced the tango to the “Mission Impossible” theme song, and the judges noted the mistakes Phillips made in her routine. But they were merciful in their comments, saying that what she did right was beautiful and that she didn’t lose her composure. “The challenge is for the professional,” said head judge Len Goodman. “They’ve got to maintain the character of the dance but still show us a little bit of the flavor of the film. I thought you got it just about right. You lost it, you went wrong, you didn’t know where you were and you panicked. I’m sure had you nailed it, it was going to be great. Unfortunately, there were a lot of mistakes.” 21/30 David Arquette and Kym Johnson Dancing the paso doble to the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” theme song, Arquette and Johnson were hoping his background in Hollywood might give them the leg up. It did the trick: The judges thought he was in control and loved his attitude. “I love the way you crack your whip!” Bruno Tonioli said of Arquette’s Indiana Jones accessory. “Like an action hero! Ready to take us into a wild ride! Watch your turns.” 23/30 Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya Kressley earned a standing ovation last week and impressed the judges. This week, he took on the Viennese waltz to the “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” theme song, and Goodman said it was like childbirth: terrible and then a joy when it is over. That said, he added that it was great fun, and if he were an at-home voter, he’d phone in for him. “I’m still recovering,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. “It was kind of like being on the ride. But weirder. I have to say this is your most butch performance you’ve ever done. I am addicted to your performances because I know I’m going to have a great time, but then I watch the technique … ” 20/30 Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus The TV host took on the paso doble this week to a song from “Flash Gordon,” and the judges thought her routine lacked expression. “I can’t get excited about it. It was OK, but I can’t get excited about it,” Goodman said. 21/30 Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy The two danced the foxtrot to a tune from “Toy Story,” and the judges found the Olympian’s dance to be lovely. They thought their performance lit up the room and talked up the chemistry between the dancing couple. Goodman said he thought they could last until the end and win the whole thing. “It made me smile the whole way though,” Inaba added. “This show is about beating our expectations, and that was exactly that. It was so refreshing to see you out there having fun. Well done.” 24/30 Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke The reality star and his partner danced the paso doble to the “Superman” theme song, and they were hoping to capitalize on last week’s high note, when Goodman told Rob he put the “dash” in Kardashian). “I like the way you move,” Inaba said. “There is something about the way you move that is steady and just the way a man should be in the ballroom. You’re fluid. It all works. I love it. Today, you took it up a notch. It was spicy and had some Superman flavor going.” 24/30 Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Last week’s top finisher tangoed to a song from “Psycho,” and the talk-show host earned a standing ovation from the audience, which included celebrity attendees like Dr. Phil and Cher, mother of Chaz Bono. Inaba said her performance was “brilliance in the ballroom.” Brilliance, indeed. They earned a pair of perfect 10’s (from Tonioli and Inaba), the first of the season. “You … always deliver,” Goodman said, despite giving Ricki her only 9. “You’ve got to get a little bit more neck going. But I tell you what, top of the leaderboard, I think so.” 29/30 Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer Bono and Schwimmer landed in the bottom of the leaderboard last week but hoped to change all that with the paso doble to the theme from “Rocky.” His mother seemed thrilled with his performance. The judges? They loved it too. Inaba cried and said Bono was an underdog and wanted to root for him. “Chaz, in the true spirit of ‘Rocky,’ no matter how many knocks you take, you keep coming back, you keep fighting, and you keep getting stronger,” Tonioli said. 21/30 J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff The war hero did the foxtrot to the “Pink Panther” theme. It was a whimsical way to chase last week’s emotional dance that had the judges (and nearly everyone in the audience) in tears. This week, the judges were mixed. Goodman crowned him the best male dancer and liked his tweak of humor and Tonioli liked his technique, but Inaba wasn’t all that impressed. “I thought it was OK,” she said to loud boos from the audience. “I love your frame. The technique is all there. But for some reason, this fell a little flat for me. I think it’s the humor. You didn’t need the humor. I think the humor didn’t quite make it tonight for me.” 26/30 Did you expect Ricki Lake to get the season’s first 10’s? Let us know in the comments!
