‘American Idol’ Preview: Can Jacob Lusk Keep It Up?

Casey Abrams will surely pull out all the stops after his near-elimination. By Eric Ditzian Jacob Lusk Photo: FOX Last week on “American Idol,” Jacob Lusk soared, while Casey Abrams collapsed , literally, falling into Ryan Seacrest’s arms as the judges exercised their only save of the season to prevent the bearded fellow from going home. Where does the show go from here? Will Lusk, who bounced back from a few dreadful performances to wow the crowd with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By,” be able to keep it up during Wednesday’s (March 30) Elton John themed evening? Can Abrams buck up after almost chucking up his dinner, following his sing-for-survival take on Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctor”? Those are just two of the questions we’re kicking around as we head into the show. Here’s what we’re hoping to see from each singer when “Idol” goes live. Casey Abrams At this point, there can hardly be any disputing that Abrams is this year’s Andrew Garcia, a guy whose musical stylings were revelatory at first but quickly revealed themselves as one-note. The problem right now for Casey is that he’s been all over the place in recent weeks — wannabe grunge kid here, slicked-back showman there. We don’t expect him to last much longer, but while he’s still there, Abrams should simply embrace who he truly is: a singer who over-relies on his growl and has a ton of fun up on the stage. A slowed-down take on “The Bitch Is Back” could be a nice fit. Haley Reinhart If you believe the tabloid press, Haley and Casey have coupled up behind the scenes. They might be able to spend a whole lot more time together soon. Her best bet to avoid a trip home is to cover a highly recognizable Elton tune and hope the public, merrily singing along, transfers some good will to Haley in the form of votes. Perhaps a husky, bluesy version of “Tiny Dancer” is in order. Jacob Lusk When Jacob sings, you feel it. Sometimes that makes it a terrifying experience, and sometimes it’s a moving one. With a new emphasis on restraining his impulse to over-sing and under-deliver, Lusk would be savvy to cover “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and wait until the final notes to truly sing the hell out of the tune. James Durbin We continue to argue that Durbin is at his best when showing off his sensitive, genuine side, rather than pretending he’s some sort of rock star you’d best keep your sisters and daughters away from. We want the 22-year-old to keep his performance slow this week, which is why we’ll point him in the direction of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters.” Lauren Alaina We fear Lauren will go uptempo once again — she seems to enjoy strutting around the stage like a go-go dancer plopped into a country salon. But she’s at her best while belting over a spare arrangement. So we hope she avoids something like “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and instead reaches for something special with a ballad like “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.” Naima Adedapo The 26-year-old has hung around an admirably long time, but Elton John week should present her a serious challenge. We think. Honestly, we’re never sure what Naima is going to give us week to week. While we’re unchanged in our view that she’d be best served by carving out an Adele-like niche for herself, Naima doesn’t seem intent on defining herself in any one way. So we won’t pick a specific song for her, just cross our fingers that she shows us something like she did during her audition take on Donny Hathaway, when we first tagged her as a contestant to watch. Paul McDonald Paul likes to boogie. There’s no way he’ll play guitar two weeks in a row and avoid those gyrations he calls dancing. But we can hope, right? How about we split the difference and have him hold onto the mic stand for dear life as he delivers a convulsive cover of “Bennie and the Jets”? Pia Toscano Wait, wait, wait — she’s totally going to do a ballad again, right? Even though the judges are nearly down on their knees begging Pia to bust out something with a pulse? Come on, you don’t think she’d actually do something like “Crocodile Rock”? Ha! The gal with the season’s biggest pipes isn’t going to stray from her comfort zone, if only because we’re not sure she’d be able to at this point. So it’s “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” for her. Scotty McCreery Speaking of comfort zones, Scotty ain’t going anywhere that’s not within spitting distance of a Travis Tritt song. We’re done expecting anything else. Listen to the lyrics of “Your Song” and it just feels like a country song. We have a feeling that’s where Scotty is headed on Wednesday. Stefano Langone Aside from Casey, who probably sustained some bruises (and possibly a heart attack), Stefano is the contestant who suffered most last week: He closed his eyes and butchered Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” This week, he’s got to sing an Elton song that drips with so much emotion even Stefano couldn’t fail to connect with some. lyrics As strange and potentially cheesy as it may be, “Candle in the Wind” — arranged in a vaguely contemporary manner — might be in order. Thia Megia Let’s agree to this: If Thia sings the “Circle of Life,” “American Idol” closes up shop forever. After the brutal reception of her “Pocahontas” tune earlier this month, she wouldn’t actually take on “The Lion King,” would she? Hey, the kid seems so mixed up these days, anything is possible. An uptempo number didn’t work for her last week. Nothing, to be frank, might prevent her from getting a trip home. In that sense, then, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” could be the perfect choice. Jay-Z Investigated By NBA For Wildcats Postgame Visit

Minority owner of the New Jersey Nets met winning Kentucky players. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images Photos of Jay-Z taken with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team after their win over North Carolina in the Regional Finals of the NCAA tournament on Sunday have drawn the wary eyes of the NBA. CBSSports.com reports that the NBA will be investigating Jay-Z’s postgame congratulatory visit to the Kentucky Wildcats locker room at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Such visits normally would be considered harmless, but Jay-Z is a minority owner of the New Jersey Nets, and contact between NBA personnel and potential NBA prospects is prohibited. Kentucky has at least two possible lottery picks in Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones, should they declare for the NBA draft. The photos and video began making the Internet rounds the day after the win, showing Jay-Z posing with players in the locker room. During a postgame interview, Kentucky player Darius Miller, who one of the photos is credited to, was asked about his reaction to seeing Jay-Z after the game. “It was crazy. I kind of had to do a double take,” Miller told Louisville’s Courier-Journal. “I didn’t expect that at all. I just had to get a picture with him.” Hova congratulating the Wildcats didn’t break any NCAA rules, however the hip-hop mogul might face a fine from the NBA, considering that Boston Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge was fined $30,000 for sitting next to Kevin Durant’s mother while he was still playing for the University of Texas in 2007. While the New Jersey Nets declined to comment, a spokesperson for the NBA confirmed to MTV News that the league is indeed investigating the matter. A message to Jay-Z’s representatives was not returned by press time. Sound off on this story in the comments below! Related Artists Jay-Z

Jennifer Lopez’s Lil Wayne Collabo ‘I’m Into You’ Leaks Online

Singer also announces that she will perform on ‘American Idol’ on May 5. By James Dinh Jennifer Lopez Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Jennifer Lopez collaborated with Pitbull for her comeback dance anthem “On the Floor,” and her follow-up single will continue a trend of linking up with chart-topping MCs. On Wednesday (March 30), the “American Idol” judge took to Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show to tease a snippet of her new single, “I’m Into You,” which features none other than rapper Lil Wayne . Despite the singer’s “Give It Love, Get It Early” campaign to release the song in its entirety early on iTunes utilizing Facebook ‘s “like” option, the tune has already made its way to the blogosphere. Over a trippy mid-tempo beat, Lil Wayne opens with a brief verse before Lopez sings a tale of a lover’s spellbound attraction. “When I look into your eyes, it’s over/ You got me hooked with your love controller/ I’m tripping and I could not get over/ I’m feeling lucky like a four-leaf clover/ I’m into you,” the pop star sings during the song’s pop&B chorus. The Weezy-assisted tune, which was reportedly produced by Stargate, will be available on iTunes next Tuesday. Among the other songs scheduled for release through the “Give It Love, Get It Early” campaign are “Papi” (April 13) and “Love?” (April 20). In addition to premiering some new music, the pop star opened up about last week’s surprising “Idol” results show, where the judges decided to save contestant Casey Abrams . “It was crazy. We knew that it was kind of a radical decision because it was so early in the season,” the singer told Seacrest. However, Lopez admitted that all the judges unanimously decided that it was the right thing to do to prevent the “dynamic performer” from packing his bags. For now, J. Lo is gearing up to perform her new music on “American Idol” on May 5 as well as at KIIS FM’s annual Wango Tango show on May 14. What do you think of J. Lo’s new tune “I’m Into You”? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: Ralph Macchio Holds Onto High Score

But in second week of competition, Chris Jericho, Romeo and Hines Ward earned the highest praise from the judges. By Kelley L. Carter Karina Smirnoff and Ralph Macchio Photo: ABC The season’s barely started, and already there was a three-way tie for the top on Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” When the new celebrity contestants got a second chance to make a first impression, following last week’s non-elimination premiere, Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke; Romeo and Chelsea Hightower; and Hines Ward and Kym Johnson stepped up their game this week. All three earned a total of 23 points from the judges. After all of the contestants performed the quickstep or the jive, their scores were added to last week’s tabulation. Both scores will then be added to the call-in votes from viewers. With last week’s scores taken into account, it was actually Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff at the top of the leader board, with 45 total points. Ward and Johnson were next with 44, followed by Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy with 43 points. It’s a bit confusing, but Tuesday’s elimination — the first for season 12 — should clear things up a bit. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba seemed most impressed with football superstar Ward’s quickstep. “That was amazing; I loved it,” she said. Hard-to-please judge Bruno Tonioli loved that Burke was able to turn wrestler Jericho from “a beast into a gazelle.” Head judge Len Goodman loved Romeo’s quickstep, saying it was “the best dance of the night.” Aside from the 23 points the top three couples grabbed, here’s how the others fared: Last week’s favorite, Macchio, didn’t impress judges with his Monday night jive. Goodman said he overdid it. Alley, fresh from a Twitter beef with talk-show host George Lopez, said she wanted to win both the competition and at weight loss. “You are so in your element. I love watching you dance,” Inaba told her. Tonioli told her that she had talent. Former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson did little to impress the judges, though Inaba told her, “I saw more than the choreography. There was a newfound elegance.” She scored 19 points. Supermodel Petra Nemcova and Disney star Chelsea Kane each grabbed 18 points. The judges didn’t seem to care too much for Kane’s jive. The bottom scorers went to legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, talk-show host Wendy Williams and radio personality Mike Catherwood, who each earned 17 out of 30 points. Who is your favorite star on the new season of “DWTS”? Talk about it in the comments. In American Idol News: Casey Abrams Collapses Under The Emotional Weight Of Being “Saved”

And we thought only God could “save” you… According to TMZ reports : “American Idol” contestant Casey Abrams — who got voted off the show Thursday and won a save from the judges — was so overwrought with emotion after the show, he began hyperventilating and then fell to the floor in the hallway. We’re told “A.I.” staffers helped Casey up and put him in a chair so he could calm down. Ironically, his song choice Thursday was “I Don’t Need No Doctor.” Our “Idol” spies tell us … Casey felt horrible that the judges used their save for him, saying “I feel really bad that other [contestants] might have to go home now because they [the judges] used the save on me.” Casey had a rough day Thursday. He got a blood transfusion in the morning because of ongoing problems with internal bleeding. Calm down Casey, no need of getting saved if you’re gonna have a heart attack and die. Don’t feel bad for everybody else, if they don’t perform well they don’t deserve to be there anyway.

Should the Judges Have Saved Casey Abrams?

Casey Abrams saw his life flash before his eyes last night. His American Idol life, that is. The bearded singer was surprisingly voted out by fans , following a lackluster Motown cover on Wednesday. Like the finalists before him, Casey was then given the chance to sing one more time in front of the judges in order to convince them to use their one-time “save” and keep him around. And it worked! In a decision that left Abrams visibly stunned – and audibly cursing at one point, watch the clip below – J. Lo, Randy and Steven told the contestant he was safe. Casey Abrams Sings for His Spot Two finalists will now be voted off next Thursday, and this summer’s Idol Live tour will include 11 singers instead of the customary 10. Did the judges make the right decision?

Chris Brown Parts Ways With Rep After ‘Good Morning America’ Incident

Tammy Brook reportedly left singer’s camp on Friday. By James Montgomery Chris Brown appears on “Good Morning America” on Monday Photo: ABC News The fallout from Chris Brown’s post-“Good Morning America” outburst continued on Friday (March 25), when The New York Post ‘s Page Six reported that the singer has parted ways with his publicist, Tammy Brook. Brook, who also reps athletes like Mike Tyson and Chris Bosh, could not be reached for comment by the newspaper, but according to other reports , she “quit” the job. A source tells MTV News that the decision was mutual, but regardless, the news caps off a tumultuous week for Brown, who allegedly smashed a window at ABC’s Times Square studios following his interview with Robin Roberts, in which she repeatedly brought up his 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna and the subsequent legal drama that followed. Brown then reacted to the interview in a (since deleted) tweet that read, “I’m so over people bringing this past sh– up!!! Yet we praise Charlie Sheen and other celebs for [their] bullsh–.” That interview occurred on Tuesday, the same day Brown dropped his F.A.M.E. album, and hours before he was set to appear on MTV’s “The Seven” to premiere his brand-new video for the single “Beautiful People,” an appearance he subsequently canceled. Later that night, at his album release party, Brown was reportedly in great spirits . He has also apologized for the “GMA” incident , saying on BET’s “106 & Park” that he was “disappointed in the way [he] acted.” All that drama hasn’t affected his album sales, though. According to Billboard, Brown’s F.A.M.E. album is set to debut atop the albums chart next week, with projected sales of 250,000-300,000 copies. Casey Abrams’ Save On ‘American Idol’: Fans React!

Most commenters thought the ‘Idol’ judges made the right decision to keep the quirky, bearded contestant on the show. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX Casey Abrams looked like he was going to be sick when the “American Idol” judges announced on Thursday night that they had no doubt that he deserved this season’s one-and-only save. The bearded bass plucker tried to look happy, but the shock of the moment nearly dropped him to his knees, even as Randy, Jennifer and Steven explained to him that they were equally surprised he was this week’s lowest vote getter and that they couldn’t let such a prodigious talent slip away so soon. Based on the comments you made after Thursday night’s suspense-packed elimination show, most of you are on Team Casey, as well. “The people in America should recognize when they have tremendous artists like Casey and don’t vote them out just like that,” wrote Sharon. “The judges [were] completely right, CASEY deserves to be there, he is a unique [and] talented artist. CASEY YOU ROCK!!!!!” Peggy Sue couldn’t have agreed more, writing, “I’m glad the judges used their save on Casey. The save is meant to keep a flub-up happening such as someone going home too early, and the only other person I would want to save is James [Durbin] (maybe Jacob [Lusk]). It’s a good reminder for America to vote for their favorites, whether you think they are safe or not. Casey is a little bit unsteady — he is clearly very musical and fun and creative. He needs to use all of that to show us how he could entertain us in the big world, not in his backyard show.” Seeing Casey on the brink of elimination was a total shock for Sweetum29, who said Abrams deserved another chance thanks to his unique voice and winning personality. If anything, Sweetum wondered just what in the heck was wrong with America’s voters, opining, “This man always sings great and gives the audience a show instead of just standing in one spot blowing out a tune.” Among the dissenters was Scooter_88, who wrote that while Abrams and Paul McDonald are among the most talented musicians on season 10, “[they] do not have pop voices, so they will probably never win this show.” Sheila seconded that emotion, while adding, emphatically, that there was “nothing so special with his voice!!! he always yell[s] or scream[s] … very irritating.” Others referred to the bearded, J.Lo-anointed sex symbol as a “cheap imitation of [forgotten season-five winner] Taylor Hicks, but at least Taylor could sing. I think the judges wasted their save.” Perhaps Candy summed up the hirsute singer’s polarizing effect on some voters best with the pointed response, “Casey as the lowest is no surprise to me. His performances have been weird, he looks weird, he sounds weird, he acts weird, and he IS weird.” Reader Rimersh pointed out one of the long-running ironies of “Idol” voting, that “when someone is a clear favorite many will not vote,” which could explain how the heavily hyped Abrams ended up near the abyss.
