Kansas City MC says playful ‘Pac taunts like ‘How’s Dorothy and Toto?’ sparked concept for ‘He’s a Mental Giant’ clip. By Rob Markman Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News Strange music indeed. In Tech N9ne ‘s latest music video, “He’s a Mental Giant,” the Kansas City, Missouri, rapper puts a hip-hop twist on the 1939 classic film “The Wizard of Oz.” While Tech says that the clip’s concept came from director Dan Gedman, he also credits Tupac with helping to spark the idea. “I remember when I met Tupac in ’92 at Jack the Rapper [music conference] at the Atlanta Hilton. I used to be down there in the lobby and Tupac down there drunk, yelling and stuff. I used to tell everybody I was from K.C.; they was like, ‘They let y’all rap in Kansas City? How’s Dorothy and Toto?’ ” he recalled of the ribbing he got from ‘Pac and other rappers. “I’m like, ‘OK, watch this.’ ” Of course, Tech hails from the Missouri city, not the state of Kansas, where “Oz” is set. Regardless, the “Mental Giant” clip shows Tecca Nina looking into a crystal ball as another incarnation of the MC wanders through a fantasy world. Throughout his journey, Tech avoids various pitfalls like lustful women and an alien air-raid before escaping in a hot-air balloon made of stone. “Mental Giant” is the second single off of Tech’s All 6’s and 7’s, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart this week thanks to Nina’s dedicated fanbase , an 82-city tour and, of course, creative video concepts. “I just did it and some crazy-ass Wizard of Oz on ecstasy and shrooms came out,” he laughed. “I think that’s a good thing.” Related Artists Tech N9ne Tupac

‘Different artists are supposed to hook up and make something beautiful,’ the underground MC tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News Among his underground following, Tech N9ne can do no wrong. But his fans, appropriately dubbed the Technicians, did get a little uppity when news broke that the Kansas City, Missouri, rap veteran would be collaborating with the likes of Lil Wayne on Tech’s recently released All 6’s and 7’s. “No, I was not afraid of the backlash because I was getting it when Wayne said he wanted to work with me to [Hot 97 DJ] Funkmaster Flex when he was in Rikers,” Tech N9ne told MTV News during an intimate sit-down at his Strange Music headquarters in Lee Summit, Missouri. “All of my fans, a lot of my fans were like, ‘Oh no, don’t f— with Wayne. No, no, no, he’s mainstream and you’re underground — it don’t mix.’ ” In October 2010, while still serving his eight-month prison bid for gun possession, Weezy revealed to Flex that he would like to work with Tech. For Tecca Nina, Wayne’s name-drop was an introduction point for new and curious fans, but for his long time die-hards, there was some skepticism. “Different artists are supposed to hook up and make something beautiful, that’s what makes music wonderful, I think,” Tech said, defending against criticism that he was selling out. “I already knew what I was gonna do. When I get with these [well-known collaborators], the beats gotta say their names.” The resulting collabo is “F— Food,” a raunchy track that not only features Weezy, but T-Pain on the hook as well. The song’s lyrical depiction of explicit sex acts will make it a hard sell for radio, but then again according to Tech, airplay was never the point of the union. “Everybody else is just going to try to put it on radio and big hit, boom and get their money off these cats. Nah, I just want to do beautiful music,” he said. The Young Money CEO isn’t the only popular rapper to appear on All 6’s and 7’s, Atlanta’s B.o.B also lends his production and lyrics to the project on “Am I a Psycho?.” The dreary track is a far cry from Bob’s 2010 radio hits “Nuthin’ On You” and “Airplanes.” Tech remembers the feeling he got when he first heard the beat and often reminds fans of B.o.B’s oft-overlooked lyrical prowess. “I chose it like, ‘Whoa,’ he did the beat and he did the chorus and I said, ‘That’s my world right there,’ and he wrote a verse for it. He’s a lyricist,” he said before citing Bob’s very first single, 2007’s “Haterz Everywhere,” as further proof. “That was thugged-out; that was gutter. I ain’t forgot B.o.B; he supposed to expand. But I know he can go, so we did ‘Am I a Pyscho?’ with Hopsin.” Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar and Stephen Carpenter of the Deftones also appearances on All 6’s and 7’s, but Tech N9ne puts any notions that he’s going mainstream to rest. “I brought people into my world,” he said. One viewer even pretends to faint at the sight of shirtless Taylor Lautner. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit Entertainment Christmas came early for the “Twilight” fans of the world, in the form of the trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” during Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards . Two days later, and the most die-hard fans still can’t get enough of watching and re-watching the nearly two-minute extravaganza. Because we anticipated a few over-the-top enthusiastic responses, MTV News asked fans to upload their “Breaking Dawn” trailer reactions to Your.MTV.com , the top three aired on MTV’s “The Seven,” on Monday. But since we received so many wonderful reaction videos, we felt that we needed to highlight a few more. This latest group features similar themes of breathlessness, wide-eyed enthusiasm and, of course, squeals of delight. One video features five young girls perched on a couch in a room surrounded by “Team Edward” paraphernalia, all of them remaining mostly composed, until one little lady pretends to faint after seeing shirtless Taylor Lautner. The reactions from Emily and Lizzy in Haysville, Kansas, go from smiley to stunned to squealy. Also notable is the fact that a young guy is hanging out in the background, probably a brother or friend, who tries to sit through the ladies’ screams but bails halfway through. Finally, uploader ayLa94kLd submitted footage of herself and her sister’s reactions. The lively duo were the first reactors we’ve seen to offer a bit of running commentary throughout. At one point, the older sis playfully smacks her younger sister to keep her from fully freaking out. In addition to those video reactions, we have a few more thoughts, written by our readers in the comments section under the first trailer-reaction story we posted. “THAT TRAILER WAS AWESOME!!!” exclaimed Tucheer83. “I loved their reactions. Mine was worse. I was literally running around the house. I couldn’t believe [director Bill] Condon actually gave us the headboard breaking. I so love that man. No wonder Jennifer Hudson got an Oscar [for Condon’s ‘Dreamgirls’]. This guy is good!!! ‘New Moon’ used to be my favorite trailer, but Condon beat it hands down — but not by much.” “I loved the trailer,” Shari44 wrote. “My biggest squeals came when I got a glimpse of Bella looking into Edward’s eyes in her wedding veil. Just beautiful. Second squeal and a little giggle was when he was gripping the headboard during a passionate moment,” she added. “When Edward and Bella were snuggling together, then when we could see her belly with the first signs of pregnancy. Awesome trailer. Loved it all. Any Edward moment makes me sigh at the very least.” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . He also explains new audition booths being placed around the country. By James Dinh Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX With “X Factor” auditions under way, Simon Cowell is slowly dishing out even more details surrounding the highly anticipated singing competition, including another possible contender for the show’s judging panel: Fergie . On Thursday (April 7), the former ” American Idol ” judge confirmed that the Black Eyed Peas songstress is among the many possible additions to the lineup. “All I can tell you is that her name was put forward,” Cowell said in a conference call with reporters. “But like a lot of other people we’ve spoken to, we have to check out everybody’s availability. There’s a lot of time you have to put into the show, because it’s not a ‘two-day-a-week’ with this. When you’re in the live show, it’s because you’re mentoring the contestant. You’re working five or six days a week.” In addition to talk of the show’s possible judges, Cowell also spoke about an alternative method hopefuls can go about auditioning for “X Factor.” In partnership with MyStudio, Cowell revealed that the series is expanding the audition process with recording studios across the country, where contestants can videotape an a cappella performance and explain why they should win the singing competition. Six audition studios will be available through the country and remain open until the end of April. “I don’t think it’s probably as fun as attending an open audition,” he said of the booth auditions. “But it is your chance to be seen and heard, and that’s why we’ve done this. I’m going to try and put these in as many cities as possible prior to our filming.” Asked how the show’s auditions are going thus far, the music exec exclaimed the turnout has been “great” and “much higher” than anticipated. In late February, Cowell broke down the rules for the forthcoming series in a promo, insisting America has yet to see a show like this before. “The show is basically a singing competition with a twist,” he said. “The auditions are open to anyone who can sing. You can be 12; you can be 112. You can be in a group; you can have 100 people in the group. It doesn’t matter.” “X Factor” MyStudio audition booths will open at the following dates/locations, according to a press release :
