As previously reported the “Dirty Computers” songstress told Rolling Stone in her cover story that she initially identified as bisexual but then later read about pansexuality, an attraction toward someone regardless of their sex or gender identity, and identified with that as well. Now Monae’s expounding on that and explaining why it was necessary to speak so candidly about being queer. The singer sat down with CBS’ Tony Dokoupil for an extensive interview in her hometown of Kansas City. After meeting with Monae’s mother, recovered addict father and 11 aunts, Dokoupil asked the singer about her relationship with her late mentor Prince. “If this was Star Wars, he was kind of like Yoda to my Han Solo,” said Monae. He then asked her if she too would portray her sexuality as sexually fluid like the Purple Rain singer did, and she said ‘no’, because she wants “Dirty Computers” like herself to feel represented and celebrated. “I think that is important for people to be proud of their identity,” she said. “I am very proud to be a queer, young black woman in America. I’m proud of who I am. I love myself, and I want for all the Dirty Computers around the world to feel seen, to be heard, and to feel celebrated and to know that I’m right there with you. News host Catt Sadler made the decision to leave after finding out that her salary was half that of her male counterparts. Her courageous decision was announced in early February, which came only a few days before the Golden Globe ceremony–which is where celebrities were particularly fired up to speak out against the systemic sexism of Hollywood. Now, another woman is claiming she was wrongfully terminated by the network. The producer, Aileen Gram-Moreno, told the New York Times that she was fired from E! for allowing Eva Longoria to criticize the network and support Catt Sadler. She filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday. She claims she was unfairly terminated and replaced by a man. Gram-Moreno elaborated, “They said, if there’s any mention of Catt in the pre-show, make sure you flag it. You’re censoring celebrities; it’s just not a good idea in my humble opinion. But it wasn’t my decision.” However, the producer claims there were just too many prerecorded interviews to thoroughly review them all, and she was unable to listen to Longoria’s interview all the way through. So when she says towards the end, “We stand with you, Catt,” Gram-Moreno was “devastated about the mistake,” and apologized to her executive producer via text, who said it was probably unavoidable. Five days later, however, Gram-Moreno said she was fired from all upcoming shows she had already been booked for, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Grammys, and the Oscars. Apparently, the young reportedly wandered away from a birthday party that his family was attending at the restaurant, which for some reason made this other patron upset. When one of the boy’s relatives came to retrieve him, a man reportedly began calling the child racial slurs and, at one point, spit on him. A source told KCTV, “He basically said get that little ‘blank’ up off the floor…The n-word started to get thrown around.” The witness said he was sure a physical altercation would ensue, but police were called to the restaurant as soon as things got heated. Once authorities arrived, the man reportedly told officers that everything was alright because he was a first-responder. “I didn’t catch what the officer said to him, but his immediate response was ‘It’s OK, I’m a fireman,’” the witness recalled. “Like that was supposed to blanket cover everything for him.” This “firefighter” wasn’t arrested, but the Overland Park police insist they continue to work with the case. The Jasper County Prosecutor’s office has filed two charges against 22-year-old Jalen Vaden: Abuse or Neglect of a Child Resulting in Death, a felony; and Second Degree Murder. According to police, Vaden was the boyfriend of Kyle’s mom. Investigators describe Vaden as a “live-in boyfriend.” According to investigators, Vaden was upset that Kyle hadn’t put on her pajamas, as he told her to do. Investigators say Vaden threw Kyle to the floor, causing her to hit her head on the floor. Investigators say “a short time later,” Kyle left her bedroom without her pajamas. Investigators say “short time later,” Vaden threw Kyle on her bed. Investigators say “a short time later,” Vaden still saw Kyle wasn’t wearing her pajamas as instructed, so he again threw Kyle to her bed. According to Investigators, “Vaden then grabbed (Kyle’s) leg, ‘tossing’ her ‘face first’ onto the floor.” Investigators say Vaden then left Kyle’s bedroom, returning a short time later to find Kyle bleeding and unresponsive. Kyle was transported to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, where she later died. Investigators say an autopsy revealed the cause of her death was head injury. Carl Junction’s police chief says Kyle’s mother has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
A recent incident that involved racist graffiti scrawled on a man’s car near Kansas State University was a hoax, police said Monday, that called attention to rising racial tensions at the school. A parked black vehicle in an apartment complex near the university in Manhattan, Kansas was painted with racial slurs including the N-word and “Die,” the Riley County Police Department said after having discovered the car Wednesday. Photos of the car spread on social media and caused a major uproar on the university’s campus. The vehicle’s owner, Dauntarius Williams , 21, who is Black and lives in the community, confessed to having defaced his own car in a Halloween prank amid the uproar, authorities explained in a news release Monday. Williams is a “young man who made a mistake” and has “[owned] up to it,” Brad Schoen , Riley County Department Police Director, explained. The case “created difficulties” in the community, police said. The university’s Black Student Union called an emergency meeting before Williams’ admission. More campus patrols were added, and concerned parents held a Facebook Live event. The FBI opened a civil rights investigation into a possible hate crime, the New York Post reported. “We want to acknowledge that people felt anger and pain as a result of pictures and words that they saw,” said Jeff Morris , a Kansas State University spokesman to the Post Monday. The incident followed previous racially charged events that had already put the campus on edge. An anti-gay slur was found outside the university student union in October. White supremacist fliers were found on campus in September, and a noose was discovered hanging from a campus tree in May. No arrests have been made in any of the previous incidents that put race front and center, they said. Officials will continue with campus patrols and assess concerns for more cameras, they said. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A federal judge says he intends to dismiss a lawsuit that accuses Black Lives Matter and several movement leaders of inciting violence that led to a gunman’s deadly ambush of law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge last year. U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson issued that warning in an order Wednesday, less than a week after ruling Black Lives Matter is a social movement and therefore can’t be sued. Last Thursday, Jackson threw out a police officer’s lawsuit blaming Black Lives Matter and movement leader DeRay Mckesson for injuries he sustained during a protest over a deadly police shooting in Baton Rouge last year. The officer’s lawyer also attempted to add “#BlackLivesMatter” as a defendant, but Jackson ruled a hashtag can’t be sued either. Now the judge is vowing to dismiss a separate suit filed on behalf of a sheriff’s deputy wounded in the July 2016 attack that killed three other officers in Baton Rouge. The same Baton Rouge-based attorney, Donna Grodner, filed both suits. The judge is giving her until Oct. 13 to respond to his order and present arguments why the deputy’s case shouldn’t be dismissed. Grodner declined to comment Thursday on the judge’s order or say whether she plans to appeal last week’s ruling. Mckesson, a Baltimore, Maryland, resident and four other Black Lives Matter leaders were named as defendants in the suit that Grodner filed on behalf of one of the officers wounded in the July 17, 2016, attack by Gavin Long, a black military veteran from Kansas City, Missouri. The suit doesn’t name the plaintiff, but its description of the wounded officer matches East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholas Tullier, who was has been at a Houston rehabilitation hospital since November. Long, a 29-year-old former Marine, was armed with a semi-automatic rifle when he killed three officers and wounded three others outside a convenience store and car wash near Baton Rouge police headquarters before he was shot dead. Long had posted rambling internet videos calling for violence in response to police treatment of African-Americans, which he said constituted “oppression.” He apparently posted a YouTube video from Dallas on July 10, three days after a sniper killed five officers and wounded nine others there. The attack came less than two weeks after a white Baton Rouge police officer shot and killed Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man. Mckesson was one of nearly 200 people arrested in Louisiana’s capital at nightly protests after Sterling’s death. The wounded deputy’s lawsuit claimed Mckesson was “in charge of” a July 9 protest that “turned into a riot” and described Long as an “activist whose actions followed and mimicked those of” the sniper who killed officers in Dallas, But the judge said that latter claim is “not altogether relevant.” Otherwise, the judge wrote, the lawsuit is “devoid of any facts that tend to demonstrate that any of the named Defendants, in particular, are liable for the alleged injuries suffered by Plaintiff, even assuming that those Defendants have the capacity to be sued.” Later Thursday, Mckesson tweeted a link to The Associated Press story on the judge’s order, saying “I’m happy to get both of these lawsuits behind me as I did nothing wrong in either case.” Like BlackAmericaWeb.com on Facebook .
