Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Who says there’s no room for divas in the military? On Friday night, VH1 brought out the big guns in female music — plus their male backed bands — for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” taped at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Paramore, Sugarland and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals all performed for the troops, along with special celebrity appearances. Set in a large air hangar, hostess Kathy Griffin made a grand entrance atop a missile flanked by Marines, wearing nothing but a camouflage bikini. She set the tone for the night by reading the official USO rules for entertainers, and then proceeded to break every single one. Of course, the sharp-tongued comedian pointed out the divas that couldn’t be there: Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber. “Turns out he’s a dude,” Griffin joked. The night’s first performance actually took place across the globe. Paramore taped their portion at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Hayley Williams (rocking cotton candy-colored hair) and company belted out “The Only Exception.” Back in San Diego, the show really got started with pop pinup Katy Perry. Hanging from a harness that looked like an American flag parachute, Katy floated over the crowd while performing “California Gurls.” Decked out in full patriotic gear, Katy followed with “Teenage Dream” and “Hot and Cold.” Next up were Sugarland, who were introduced by supermodel Marissa Miller and a special serviceman, Sugarland vocalist Jennifer Nettles’ brother. The country duo performed “Stuck Like Glue” with MC Lyte, and continued with “Tonight” and “All I Want to Do.” Griffin returned with the biggest crowd favorites, “Jersey Shore” stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. Griffin dubbed Snooki “Agent Orange” and made Mike agree to stay away from grenades. But really, they were there to introduce one of the standout performers of the night: newcomers Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. Grace and her band started with the opening licks of the “Top Gun” theme song — after all, this was the same base where the classic ’80s flick was filmed. Decked out in a shimmery short dress and commanding a creamy flying V guitar, Grace jumped into “Paris (Ooh La La)” and “Medicine” before being joined by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart for their classic “Crazy on You.” They closed out the set with a rousing rendition of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Next was Nicki Minaj, straight from the pages of an anime comic book. Rocking a curly pink wig, red and blue graphic dress and matching mint-green leggings and heels, the diva MC tore through her Pink Friday hits “Moment 4 Life,” “Right Thru Me” and “Roman’s Revenge.” But before Nicki was finished she was joined by Perry for a playful performance of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Following the cover theme, Paramore were back in Kuwait with an epic rendition of the Foo Fighters’ anthem “My Hero.” Keri Hilson kept the energy high with an aggressive performance of “Turning Me On,” following with “Knock You Down” and “Pretty Girl Rock.” She then joined Sugarland to cover Aretha Franklin’s “Think.” Perry closed out the show in true diva form, with an explosive performance of “Firework,” complete with a massive spectacle of, well, fireworks. She dedicated the song to everyone serving in the military around the world. And just at that moment the camera spotted a Marine hoisting a sign that read “Katy, you’re our firework.” “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” airs Sunday, December 5, on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET. Shameless: Kathy Griffin Insists Calling Scott Brown’s Daughters ‘Prostitutes’ Was a Fantastic Career Move

Liberal “comedian” Kathy Griffin thinks there is no line of rudeness she can’t cross, including calling the daughters of Sen. Scott Brown “prostitutes.” On Monday’s Joy Behar Show on CNN Headline News, Griffin proclaimed “But yes, whenever a statement is issued against me, I`m in heaven. I feel my next special is half written for me. And then I get to read statements allowed in my live shows which you can go to KathyGriffin.net and see the many, many cities I`ve picked up for my current tour.” Not even Rep. Barney Frank could make her feel bad about it: BEHAR: So you’re really feeling bad about it all? Okay, I mean, when Barney Frank turns on you, one of your gays, you have to start to wonder. GRIFFIN: Hey, the gays, look, there is — that’s — there is a reason that that flag has colors. There’s many levels and colors. There’s not just — I mean, I make the joke about the gays, but there’s many, many kinds of gay people like there are many, many kinds of straight people. And you know, he’s one of my gays. He just doesn’t know it because he doesn`t know, you know, who I am, as usual. Behar had the same conversation with liberal “comedian” Margaret Cho on August 25, but Cho had no idea who Scott Brown was. So Behar told her (incorrectly) that Scott Brown posed for Playgirl magazine — when it was really Cosmopolitan.  BEHAR: And he also introduced his daughters in one speech that he gave saying they’re available and he posed for them in bikinis. They were in bikinis. People felt that they were easy targets and available. But she got into trouble because he didn’t like that she called them prostitutes. CHO: Yes, well, I don’t know. I think she can say whatever she wants. And part of her appeal and her glory is that she does. She doesn`t really care. BEHAR: She doesn’t care, the more you criticize, the more she loves it. This logic of Griffin’s doesn’t always work — CNN did bump her off their New Year’s Eve program as she incessantly tried to embarrass Anderson Cooper.

Adam Levine, Swizz Beatz, Kathy Griffin Talk Humiliation On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I was gross,’ Maroon 5 frontman says of his ‘Reality Bites’ style. By MTV News staff Adam Levine on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News This season on MTV’s “When I Was 17,” we’ve heard embarrassing stories of awkwardness, heartbreak and, um — OK, those have been our two big themes, because even celebs like Drake and Kevin Jonas were just dorky kids back in the day. This week’s episode, however, introduced entirely new levels of embarrassment, as Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine , hip-hop luminary Swizz Beatz and comedian Kathy Griffin dished about their less glamorous moments from childhood. “When I was 17, I was gross,” Levine admitted on the show. “My hair was long and really ratty and nappy. [I wore] huge, oversize flannels that didn’t fit [and I had] a goatee. Like a bad version of Ethan Hawke in ‘Reality Bites.’ ” Levine shared something in common with Griffin, who looks back at her high school style with utter mortification. “I was pale, freckly and had Bozo hair!” she laughed. The foul-mouthed jokester was also completely unprepared for certain aspects of teenage social life. “One time, I was fooling around with this one guy. He was like, ‘Hey, Kath, you wanna see a penis?’ ” she said. “I said, ‘OK, but I’m not going to do anything, because I’m a lady.’ And so he unzips his pants, and then this thing comes out. It scared the f— out of me. I thought it was disgusting. I didn’t know that they’re purple. I thought it’d be tan. It had this really perfect shape. When I was 17, I did not shoot anyone, I did not go to jail, I just didn’t know what penises looked like.” Right. We have to admit, we’re at a loss for words. As was Swizz one time when he tried to sneak into a club and ran into an unamused bouncer. See, the future hip-hop star got his start DJing in clubs before he was even legally allowed to drink. Usually he’d sneak in the back. But on one occasion, he showed up late and tried his luck at the front entrance. “So I go through the front, I get to the door and — ‘Show me your ID!’ I’m like, ‘I don’t have no ID. What do you mean, show you my ID? I work here. I’m supposed to be getting the party started.’ ” Swizz said. “I was like, ‘I’m telling you, I work here!’ ” he recalled. “I’m speaking with so much authority. I’m this little skinny guy. He’s looking down on me, like, ‘I don’t care. Step over here.’ ” “When I Was 17” airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. A-List Connections: Kathy Griffin Taught J.J. Abrams at the Groundlings

When asked by the Hollywood Reporter to reveal her pick for the Best Drama Series Emmy, Kathy Griffin responded with her most fascinating Hollywood connection yet: She once taught improv to J.J. Abrams. “So I’m going to go with Lost and here’s why: J.J. Abrams was my student when I was teaching at the Groundlings as one of my day jobs,” she said. “And l feel like Lost took a lot of crap because they had good episodes and episodes that maybe weren’t as good, but ultimately I thought it was a very compelling show.” It’s that support that made Abrams’s fine acting work in Six Degrees of Separation possible. Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List Reality Check: ‘Kathy’s Smear Campaign’

Kathy Griffin returned to form on this week’s D-List , spreading her legs in front of strangers several times and seeming thrilled about it. Her “public pap smear” may have been a dorky stunt, but at least it was less self-important than her mortifying trip to Washington D.C. . Let’s forage through the blinding vajazzle of this week’s episode and figure out its most real and hacky moments.

The View’s Hasselbeck Unloads on Kathy Griffin, But Joy Behar Waters Down Smear of Scott Brown’s Daughters; ‘It Was Just a Joke’

On her Bravo show last Tuesday night, Kathy Griffin trashed Sen. Scott Brown’s two daughters as “prostitutes.” CNN reporter Dana Bash, who was present with her husband John King, erupted into laughter. Yesterday on ABC’s “The View,” co-host Joy Behar tried to throw a wet blanket on the ensuing outrage over the “joke,” which included condemnations of Griffin’s comments by Scott Brown himself and by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.). “It’s just a joke,” Behar repeatedly affirmed during a heated exchange with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who vehemently disagreed. “No, no, no, no, no!” Hasselbeck exclaimed. “We’ve always said politicians’ kids are off limits! If someone went around calling Barack Obama’s two girls prostitutes, people would be up in arms. Laybacks! Kathy Griffin’s got to back up on that one right now!” Hasselbeck ripped Griffin as “scum” for her remarks. “You defend your daughters against scum who comes after them and calls them someone like a prostitute,” Hasselbeck asserted about Scott Brown’s condemnation of Griffin’s “joke.” On a recent episode of “The View,” Hasselbeck had a chance to go after Griffin live after Griffin previously called her an “f—ing Survivor reject.” The conservative co-host, however, backed down even after being taunted by Griffin. Newsbusters asked last week if Hasselbeck had been muzzled, especially after liberal Joy Behar went after conservative guest Laura Ingraham a month later about the role of women in religion. After Hasselbeck’s initial defense of Scott Brown’s daughters, Behar tried to twist the topic, pointing out that Brown said his daughters “were available” and “trotted” them out in public on the night of the election – so they were fair game. “Every politician has their family around them,” on election night, Hasselbeck retorted. “Are you justifying what Kathy Griffin said about these two young girls?” Hasselbeck asked, astonished. “It’s just a joke,” Behar insisted. “Don’t do it, it’s not just a joke,” Hasselbeck immediately retorted. “We said off-limits. Everyone said off-limits. Get in line and cut it out. It’s not okay.” When pressed what her reaction would be if her own daughters were called prostitutes, Behar said she would casually brush it off. “I know my daughter is not a prostitute, so it’s funny to me,” the show’s liberal co-host answered. Behar also defended CNN correspondent Dana Bash, who laughed at Griffin’s comment. Behar said Bash simply has “a sense of humor,” and only “chuckled” at the comment. Co-host Sherri Shepherd said that a laugh was expected since Griffin is, after all, a comic. Neither Behar nor Shepherd discussed whether Bash, as a reporter, should have been on the show in the first place, given that Griffin is notorious for her dirty and outrageous remarks, often at the expense of Republicans or conservatives.. As Newsbusters reported on the incident last week, you may watch the video of the incident yourself to see whether Dana Bash erupted in laughter or simply “chuckled” at the comment. Hasselbeck was not without any support from her co-hosts. For her part, generally liberal ‘View’ moderator Whoopi Goldberg defended Scott Brown on speaking out for his daughters. “If somebody talked about my daughter as a joke like that, I’d beat their a**,” she said. A partial transcript of the segment, which aired on July 19 at 11:09 a.m. EDT, is as follows: (Video Clip) KATHY GRIFFIN: Scott Brown – who is a senator from Massachusetts, and has two daughters that are prostitutes. (End Video Clip) ELISABETH HASSELBECK: It’s actually not really funny, and I know his daughters actually, and they’re anything but that, and they –   JOY BEHAR: It’s a joke, Elisabeth. It’s just a joke. HASSELBECK: Well no, no, no, no, no! We’ve always said politicians’ kids are off limits. If someone went around calling Barack Obama’s two girls prostitutes, people would be up in arms. Laybacks! Kathy Griffin’s gotta back up on that one right now! Back it up, KG! JOY BEHAR: But wait a second, isn’t he the one who trotted his daughter out there when he accepted the speech, and said, you know that she’s available. HASSELBECK: Trot – every politician has their family around them. BEHAR: Once you trot the kids out, the Obamas do not trot the kids out, if you’ll notice. Bristol and the boyfriend there, Levi – Levi who drops his Johnst – who dropped his Levis to show his Johnston – they’re pushing a reality show now – (Crosstalk) HASSELBECK: Wait a minute, are you justifying what Kathy Griffin said about these two young girls? That’s – BEHAR: It’s just a joke. HASSELBECK: Don’t do it, it’s not just a joke. We said off limits.” Everyone said off limits. Get in line, and cut it out. It’s not okay. (…) WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Yeah, listen. If someone’s – no, no, no – if somebody talked about my daughter as a joke like that, I would beat their ass. SHERRI SHEPHERD: But you’re their mother. GOLDBERG: That’s my – that’s our point. So you can’t be surprised that Scott Brown took offense at it. Those are his kids! (…) HASSELBECK: You defend your daughters against scum who comes after them, and calls them someone like a prostitute. BEHAR: Are you calling Kathy scum now? Are you calling her scum? (Crosstalk) BEHAR: I’m wondering, is that okay? HASSELBECK: If someone called your daughter a prostitute, would you think they’d be scum? I’d call someone scum if they called my daughter a prostitute. BEHAR: I know my daughter is not a prostitute, so it’s funny to me. HASSELBECK: (Sarcastically) Hysterical. It’s so funny. (…) BEHAR: I know, it’s true. The discussion in the makeup room what whether Dana Bash should have laughed. That was the discussion. Because she’s a news person. GOLDBERG: She could have been nervous – (Crosstalk) BEHAR: I say Dana Bash has a sense of humor, knows that the girls are not prostitutes, and then chuckled at it. That’s all. SHEPHERD: And as a matter of fact, Kathy is a comic. So you say outrageous things, we expect to get a laugh.

Kathy Griffin Emotionally ‘Raw’ Over Levi Johnston Engagement

‘I’m very raw about my feelings of being dumped,’ Griffin said about Johnston’s re-engagement to Bristol Palin. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Kathy Griffin Photo: MTV News Just last summer, Kathy Griffin and Levi Johnston hit the town together at the Teen Choice Awards. The duo were all smiles as they walked down the carpet arm in arm. Cut to one year later and Johnston has left the comedienne heartbroken with the news that he’s re-engaged to former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol Palin . Suffice to say, Griffin isn’t holding up too well. “You’re talking to me at a very emotionally difficult time because my lover, who I thought was my fiance, Levi Johnston, dumped me,” she joked at the 2010 VH1 Do Something Awards in L.A. Of course, Griffin is managing to smile through the pain. She made a video spoofing how she handled the news of Johnston’s engagement. In it, with Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” playing in the background, Griffin tears apart his Playgirl spread and teases that she may soon set her sights on Taylor Lautner, thanks to his dreamy GQ cover. “And I’ve done a YouTube about it and I’m very raw about my feelings of being dumped,” she said. “And I think any woman or gay man worth his salt will identify with my raw pain that is very, very serious.” So, Griffin is hoping that fans will stand by her in her pain now that she’s got a bunch of projects on the horizon. “It’s weird because through the pain, you also see me promoting my show, my Twitter, my books,” she teased. Recently Johnston and Palin spoke to US Weekly about their engagement, explaining that they reconnected three months ago while working on a custody plan for their son Tripp and unexpectedly rekindled their romance. “I really thought we were over,” Johnston said. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking — and then we took Tripp for a walk.” What do you think of Griffin’s video about Johnston? Tell us in the comments!
