‘South Park’ Creators To Bring Mormon Musical To Broadway In 2011

Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced they’ll open ‘The Book of Mormon’ next March. By Joel Hanek Trey Parker and Matt Stone Photo: Maury Phillips/ WireImage On the heels of the milestone accomplishment of airing the 200th episode of “South Park,” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have announced that they will be hitting Broadway in March of 2011 with the production “The Book of Mormon.” It’s a project the duo first announced back in 2008, following the passage of the gay-marriage-banning Proposition 8 in California (for which the Mormon Church campaigned heavily). According to a press release, the Colorado duo wrote the book, music, and lyrics with Tony Award winner Robert Lopez, one of the creators of the hit musical “Avenue Q.” While no cast announcements have been made, Parker will direct alongside Jason Moore (another “Avenue Q” alumnus) with Scott Rudin and Anne Garfino listed to produce. “Growing up in Colorado, a lot of our friends were Mormons and we always thought their book would make a great musical,” Parker and Stone said in a statement. “We loved ‘Avenue Q’ and are having a blast working with Bobby Lopez. Having a show on Broadway is a dream come true for us and we can’t wait to share ‘The Book of Mormon’ with everyone.” “The Book of Mormon” tells the story of Joseph Smith, who founded the Latter Day Saints movement in the 19th century, while also following two modern-day Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, according to BBC News . The idea for the production has apparently been percolating for a while. Back in 2003, the controversial, musical “All About the Mormons” episode of “South Park” satirized the founding of the religion. While this is the first major stage production for Stone and Parker, the two are no strangers to musicals. Aside from writing the music and lyrics for the occasional “South Park” song, Parker directed, wrote and starred in the 1996 cult-classic “Cannibal! The Musical” alongside Stone. The pair even garnered a songwriting Oscar nomination for “Blame Canada,” from their 1999 film “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.” Parker’s music writing credits also include collaborating on many of the tracks for their 2004 marionette action movie, “Team America: World Police.”

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Katie And Andrew Ignore Adam Lambert’s Wisdom

Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest’s erratic behavior was the only thing keeping us watching. By Jim Cantiello Katie Stevens and Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week, “American Idol” producers targeted the tween demo by forcing the top nine to sing the songs of Elvis Presley! And where better to rehearse than on the stage of the Cirque du Elvis Las Vegas stage show?! Adam Lambert broke all sorts of barriers by being the first openly-“Idol” contestant to return to the show as a guest mentor. Although Adam’s advice was spot-on and intuitive (Yo, Andrew, stop being a bore! Yo, Aaron Kelly, stop being a 5-year-old! Yo, Lee Dewyze, Jocelyn Wildenstein moves her face more than you!) most of the contestants blatantly ignored his wisdom. The result? An episode as entertaining as “3000 Miles to Graceland.” Yep, it was that bad. The only thing that kept viewers from switching over to “Lost” was Ryan Seacrest’s increasingly erratic behavior. He slow-danced during Tim Urban’s (kind of awesome) performance; he slurred his speech; he made inappropriate comments to contestants; he forgot he was on live television — it was like Paula Abdul never left “Idol.” So congratulations, Mariah Carey! Your loopy “TRL” appearance from 2001 is no longer the craziest thing we’ve seen on live television. On Wednesday night’s results show (which featured a double elimination), we learned that “Idol Gives Back” will have the same lineup as the one from two years ago. (Basically.) We also learned that Kara DioGuardi is somehow even more unappealing when she’s holding an adorable African baby. How is that even possible? Two “Idol” alums returned to sing a song, and each brought something special to the stage. Adam Lambert brought lasers and a glittery ear monitor, while Brooke White brought along deadweight in the form of Miley Cyrus’ tone deaf ex-boyfriend, Justin Gaston. Once results time arrived, Andrew was the first to get the boot, and he straight up didn’t sing “Straight Up” as his farewell song. By the end of the hour, Katie Stevens was the other singer sent packing, putting the “cut” in “Connecticut.” Next week is “Idol Gives Back,” which means we’ll hear inspirational ballads from the top seven. You’ve been warned. Do you think Katie and Andrew were eliminated too soon? What was the highlight of this week’s “Idol”? Share your opinions in the comments! Adam Lambert Brings Lasers to American Idol Results Show

Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens were both eliminated from American Idol last night. This wasn’t a shocking result, but it was a sad one, as both contestants shed tears during the episode-concluding montage of their time on the show. We wish Andrew and Katie the best of luck. On a more positive note, Adam Lambert performed his latest single (“Whataya Want From Me”) about 45 minutes into the hour. Donning a colorful suit, skinny tie and, of course, a bit of guy-liner, last year’s runner-up put on an emotional rendition of the single – and used lasers on stage. “I wanted to do something a little different,” Adam said to Ryan Seacrest afterwards, later giving thanks to the show: “I owe American Idol everything.” Humble and incredibly talented? That’s the Adam Lambert we know and love… Back on Idol

Katie Stevens And Andrew Garcia Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

‘Idol’ alums Adam Lambert and Brooke White, along with Justin Gaston, perform during results show. By Gil Kaufman Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox Despite doubling up on the eliminations thanks to Michael Lynche’s save last week, there were no major upsets on Wednesday night’s (April 14) “American Idol,” as bottom-three regulars Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens were sent into “AI” purgatory until this summer’s tour. It was a surprisingly dry-eyed goodbye, as the two underperforming singers appeared resigned to their fate as “Idol” footnotes. The eliminations came after a season-high 34 million votes were cast and, thankfully, the end came quickly for Andrew Garcia. Host Ryan Seacrest brought him out alongside Casey James and Aaron Kelly near the top of the show, and rather than putting him through the usual torture of waiting nearly 55 minutes to learn his fate, Seacrest abruptly said, “Andrew, it’s the end of the road. I’m sorry. America has voted. It’s the last chance tonight on ‘Idol.’ ” That meant James and Kelly advanced, while Garcia — who wowed the judges early on with his oft-cited cover of former judge Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” but never again brought that kind of thunder — was done in by his Velveeta take on Elvis’ “Hound Dog.” He went out singing James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something” from the semifinals. “I appreciate everything,” the often-emotional Garcia said. “I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad I’ve been through what I’ve been through. You guys let me experience something that I’ve never experienced.” The second to go was teen Katie Stevens, whose bluesy, brassy “Baby What Do You Want Me to Do” landed her in the bottom three for the third and final time after Simon Cowell called her performance annoying, shrieky and too loud. Stevens said she’d tell her friends about the amazing people she met and the unbelievable experience she had on the show. Trying to fight back tears, she reprised her cover of the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” her voice cracking at times. Joining Aaron and Casey in safety were Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox (who tootled a little ditty on her harmonica in celebration), Siobhan Magnus and “Teflon” Tim Urban, who again escaped elimination and was sent to safety as Lynche and Stevens were left awaiting their fate near show’s end. After serving as this week’s mentor, season-eight runner-up Adam Lambert showed the kids how it’s done with a smoke-and-lasers new-wave blowout of his hit “Whataya Want From Me.” Also performing were season-seven finalist Brooke White and “If I Can Dream” web star — and Miley Cyrus’ ex — Justin Gaston, who teamed up for a schmaltzy cover of, you guessed it, “If I Can Dream.” The obligatory group lip-synch included an extra cheesy, show-tuney medley of “Burning Love,” “Teddy Bear,” “Return to Sender” and “Viva Las Vegas” that would have had even jumpsuit-wearing fat Elvis waddling for the exits. Next week’s theme is “inspirational songs,” and the shows will coincide with the “Idol Gives Back” charity event. It has not yet been announced if producers will forego an elimination during the fundraiser, as they did in its inaugural year in 2007; Michael Johns was sent home during the 2008 event. Among the acts pitching in next week are Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox and Jeff Beck. Were you surprised Andrew and Katie were sent home? American Idol Recap: Who’s Leaving the Building?

American Idol handed its nine remaining contestants a formidable task: Perform an Elvis hit and have it sound fresh and fancy-free and Ke$ha-flavored for the more happenin’ preteens. Sounds doable, right? Except totally impossible? Right. Luckily, the surviving balladeers were also granted the help of Adam Lambert, who established himself as the best mentor of the season. But the real judging is up to us: Which two contestants ‘return to sender’ during tomorrow’s results show? Movieline’s rankings pile up after the jump.

Tina Fey Thinks Justin Bieber Can ‘Totally’ Do A Sketch On ‘SNL’

The ‘Date Night’ star says she’s looking forward to working with the pop star this week. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tina Fey Photo: MTV News Will Justin Bieber get to join in any sketches when he appears as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this week? Former “SNL” head writer Tina Fey , who is set to host this week, certainly thinks so. “I met him at the Kids’ Choice Awards. He’s a nice young man,” Fey told MTV News at the New York premiere of her new flick, “Date Night.” “And I’m looking forward to hopefully doing a sketch with him.” Bieber has already displayed his comedy chops during his April Fools’ Day takeover of Funny Or Die , something that Fey said she’d check out soon. “I’ll look that up tonight,” she said. “I think he totally can do it.” Of course, Tina Fey fans are probably wondering if the “Date Night” star has any plans to resurrect her Sarah Palin impression for Saturday’s show. “It’ll for sure be attempted,” she said. “And then we’ll see if it sticks.” At the Oscars earlier this year, Fey revealed what other big plans she had in store for Bieber on “SNL.” “I’m gonna pick him up like this,” she said, swinging her arms as if she were holding a baby. “And I’m gonna push those bangs out of his face like this [licks her finger], like a mother.” All joking aside, Fey is looking forward to working with Bieber, because, “I like people who can really sing and I think he can really sing.” Bieber is clearly eager to step onto the stage at 30 Rock. “I’m really excited. I’ve watched it all my life,” he told MTV News in March. “So it’s amazing to be able to perform.” What do you think Fey and Bieber should do together on “SNL”? Tell us in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Aced Lennon/McCartney Night?

Aaron Kelly should face permanent suspension, while Casey James proves he’s learned something. By Eric Ditzian Katie Stevens performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: FOX Seven weeks into the do-or-die tests that are the “American Idol” live shows, our singing students might finally be getting the hang of things. That’s quite a change from week one, when MTV News wanted to hand nearly all of the contestants a failing grade and shove off for an early summer break. But we stuck around the classroom, and Tuesday night’s John Lennon/Paul McCartney-themed show might have offered the most consistent group of performances this season. Special gold stars go to Crystal Bowersox’s didgeridoo and Lee Dewyze’s bagpipes, both of which added an unexpected world music flavor that had heretofore been missing from the “Idol” curriculum. That’s not to say everyone aced the evening. Mr. Aaron Kelly, we’re looking in your direction. So who’s standing at the head of the class? Whose grades are slipping? Let’s see how everyone measured up with another edition of our “Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s “Idol” recap in the MTV Newsroom. Excellent Casey James : Up until Tuesday night, the 27-year-old’s finest performance of the season was his stripped-down, dude-on-a-stool rendition of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven.” After a few weeks of going the electrified rock-star route, James returned to what worked best for him. During his growly, acoustic take on Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” James managed the neat trick of being both vulnerable and ferocious. We dug what we heard, and hope James doesn’t wait another few weeks to do something similar. Good Katie Stevens : “Let It Be” is as close to an “Idol” failsafe as there is, and Stevens made good on that potential with some on-point vocals. But others before her on the show — Brooke White and Kris Allen — have killed the song. She merely batted it around a bit, like a kitten in a hot pink Snuggie. Again, it was perfectly lovely, but where does the 17-year-old go from here? Back to the awkward, I’m-a-big-girl-I-swear performances of weeks past? And will she even make it, after two consecutive trips to the bottom three? Michael Lynche : Big Mike’s soul-flecked “Eleanor Rigby” seemed to be the most divisive performance of the evening. Perhaps taking a note from David Cook’s 2008 reworking of the same tune, Lynche opted for a daring arrangement that turned the original’s string quartet into a beefed-up orchestra. Sure it was a tad theatrical, but it was equally entertaining. Crystal Bowersox : The only thing that pulled Mama Sox up into this section of the grading curve was that didgeridoo. It certainly wasn’t that overstuffed arrangement of “Come Together,” which muddled her ever-soulful voice. Still, this is the second straight week that she’s stepped outside her Tracy Chapman-esque singer-songwriter comfort zone. She deserves credit for keeping things fresh. Average Andrew Garcia : If anyone was hoping Garcia had learned a thing or two after his highly praised performance last week — which came on the heels of several in-over-his-head performances — the first notes of “Can’t Buy Me Love” proved otherwise. Call it schlocky, cruise-ship swing. Call it the work of an ear-jangling wedding band that forces you to get drunk just so you can make it to the end of the reception. Just don’t call it a comeback, because Garcia has regressed in a serious way. Despite his copious face time on camera since the start of the season, we fear that, with the likes of Paige Miles and Lacey Brown out of the way, Garcia is in trouble this week. Tim Urban : It’s no doubt condescending — not to mention unfair — to judge Urban on a Tim Curve. But that’s what Randy Jackson did, and it seems the only way to a) assess the kid without being cruel and b) explain how in the world he’s stuck around this long. At least his vocals largely held steady during the performance — a welcome change from previous weeks. Alas, this week will be the same in one key respect: He’s headed, once again, into the bottom three. What happens once “Teflon” Tim gets there is anybody’s guess. Siobhan Magnus : She’s nothing if not unpredictable. Yet we’re beginning to sense a pattern: Magnus hasn’t done too well the last week or two. That take on “Across the Universe” sounded like something left on the cutting room floor of Amy Adams’ “Enchanted”: certainly pleasing to the ear but a tune better kept locked in fantasy land than belted out on the “Idol” stage. It could be a surprise, but Magnus just might be in trouble this week, though her chin-trembling story about her baby sisters may have won her enough votes to avoid the bottom three. Lee Dewyze : Question! What does it say that the only contestants gifted with an outside-the-box instrument were Dewyze and MamaSox? Were they the only two singers who, coincidentally, thought to haul out oddball instruments on the same night? Or do only producers’ darlings get to hire freelance musicians for their performances? Right. In any event, much like Crystal’s turn onstage, the only thing memorable about Dewyze’s performance was his skirt-wearing bagpiper. His “Hey Jude” was perfectly forgettable … and it doesn’t matter at all! As both producers and voters have decided, Dewyze is a front-runner. He’s not going anywhere. Unsatisfactory Aaron Kelly : We think it might be time for Kelly to bow out of this “Idol” class and scamper back to the high school from whence he came. Not only was “The Long and Winding Road” the poorest song choice of the night (it’s a beautiful tune but one not suited to opening a rockin’ live show), but his complete lack of oomph while singing left us so drowsy, we almost didn’t make it to the second commercial. Yet we have a feeling none of this matters in the least. Kelly’s got a solid fanbase that has never let him fall to the dreaded bottom three. Hard to see how last night’s song — no better and no worse than many of his past ones — will change that. How would you grade last night’s “Idol” performances? Give us your report cards in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ ” American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. American Idol Recap: Tim Urban Doesn’t Suck!

Tim Urban is a very nice guy, with a great smile and an even better attitude. But, let’s face it: the singer isn’t really American Idol finalist matieral. Heck, he’s scarcely American Idol semifinalist material, only advancing to the top 24 of season nine after another contestant got disqualified. It’s difficult not to root for Urban, however. Which made his rendition of “All My Loving” so refreshing this week. Not only did Tim avoid another embarrassing critique at the hands of the judges, he actually finished in the top three! Well, THG’s top three at least. Here’s how we’d rank last night’s Beatles-inspired performances: Casey James : Taking a page from the solo John Lennon catalog, Kara’s former crush put on a tender, touching rendition of “Jealous Guy.” Crystal Bowersox : She played a didgeridoo for “Come Together.” Yes, that’s a wind instrument. And playing it on stage made us love Crystal even more. Tim Urban: Did this rendition remind anyone else of The Plain White T’s? Great work all around. Michael Lynche: We still can’t envision Big Mike winning it all. Accompanied by a mini orchestra on stage, though, Lynche made his heart show through again with “Eleanor Rigby.” Siobhan Magnus: Look at that outfit (below)! Such a unique contestant, with a sound that also ensures she’ll stand out. Went with “Across the Universe.” Lee DeWyze : The judges loved his confidence, but we didn’t think it was Lee’s best performance. It’s a difficult, well-known song to try and cover. Katie Stevens: Great vocals, didn’t seem too old for a change… but Katie still doesn’t do it for us. She did change “Hey Jude” and made it her own, but that’s not always a great thing. Andrew Garcia: Considered “corny” by the judges. Can we all forget his Paula Abdul rendition weeks ago and just admit that Garcia won’t be around much longer? Aaron Kelly: Sorry. You’re cute, but that isn’t enough to make this version of “The Long and Winding Road” remotely memorable. Who was your favorite performer of the evening?
