Here’s My Beef With Taylor Swift’s Hunger Games Song

The problem with Taylor Swift ’s Hunger Games single “Safe & Sound” is – sorry, Swifties – Taylor Swift. Taken on its own it’s a perfectly lovely slice of discordant Americana pop that wisps beautifully with Swift’s reedy warbling as she sings about protecting loved ones as a war rages outside. But as a Hunger Games song… as what promises to be the Hunger Games song associated with the movie (besides Rue’s iconic ditty within the film), it leaves something to be desired precisely because Swift is singing in the spirit and voice of Katniss Everdeen . And you, my adorable little Taylor, are no Katniss Everdeen. Here’s the thing: I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the oeuvre of Taylor Swift. Do I sing along every time “Love Story” comes on the radio? Fine, yes. Will I ever forget the ear-bleedingly bad live performance she gave at the 2010 Grammys, as horrified duet partner Stevie Nicks gamely powered through? Never. It haunts my waking dreams. And yet Swift is just too bubbly and cute to loathe, dammit. Remember her in Valentine’s Day , all track shorts and legs and smiles? She’s like a crinkle-haired bubblegum-singing bunny rabbit. There is no hating her. So it’s not that I hate Swift as I listen to the twangy strains of “Safe & Sound,” as backed by the band The Civil Wars. But as the first song released from the Hunger Games soundtrack it’s the film’s leading pop single, the one that will be associated with the beloved book’s adaptation from the get go in mainstream media. And it’s kind of disappointing that Swift’s voice is so overpoweringly front and center whilst crooning about life from Katniss’s perspective. Consider another recent pop single from a beloved YA film franchise: Bruno Mars’s Breaking Dawn ditty. Now that’s a catchy, hook-filled number that dances the line between Mars’s signature sound (okay, so it sounds exactly like a Bruno Mars song) while being vaguely related to the themes of the film. Something about if you go away it will rain and your father not approving of your “troublesome” boyfriend. Sure. Why not? Bruno Mars isn’t singing as if he’s Bella Swan. We are not meant to identify him with our heroine, hence Mars seems as if he was simply influenced to write a love song after Netflixing Twilight or something. In Swift’s case, she’s singing as if she is Katniss. And therein lies the problem. Give this song to a singer with a less confrontational voice (Gillian Welch, if she was 17?) and it’d be instantly more palatable. The showy breathiness of Swift’s voice never lets you forget that it’s Taylor Swift singing. I imagine this playing over the end credits of The Hunger Games , a seemingly contemplative coda to the senseless carnage Katniss lives through in the series’ first installment, and Swift’s voice needling its way into my head from the first verse, breaking through my Hunger Games afterglow. TAYLOR SWIFT TAYLOR SWIFT TAYLOR SWIFT is all I fear I’ll be able to think as I exit the theater come March. Worse: The idea of Taylor Swift channeling Katniss Everdeen – singing her life with her words! Killing me softly, and not in a good way! — is an unfathomable vision that does not compute. Put Swift in the Cornucopia and she’d be the first to go down, no question. I’d almost rather Jennifer Lawrence sung the theme song herself. I know it makes total sense for Lionsgate given the tween/teen/YA demographic of The Hunger Games movies, which aim to fill the Twilight gap, and the universal truth that all 13-year-olds love and worship Taylor Swift. But not all of us Hunger Games fans are members of the Taylor Swift fan club. Can we at least graduate to less wimpy pop stars (How about Demi Lovato ? She’s been to rehab !) for the Catching Fire soundtrack? Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

‘Hunger Games’: Top 10 Moments Of 2011

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we reflect on the movie’s milestones from the past year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Murray Close If any film caught Internet fire this year, it was most certainly the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ young-adult novel ” The Hunger Games .” Though the film had been optioned by Lionsgate way back in 2009, 2011 was the year fans finally saw all the pieces come together, from casting the titular tournament’s 24 tributes to a teaser tidbit and full-length trailer. As such, MTV News is taking a look back at all things “Hunger Games” with a list of the franchise’s best moments from 2011 (in chronological order). Let the Games begin! X Marks the Release Date The year began with a bang when Lionsgate announced in late January that “The Hunger Games” would swoop into theaters March 23, 2012 . Lionsgate set that particular date in its crosshairs hoping to capitalize on spring breaks and Easter weekend for the (mostly) family-friendly release. Jennifer Lawrence Is Katniss Everdeen The Reaping then began in earnest, with seemingly every young Hollywood actress vying for the coveted role of District 12’s female tribute. Would it be Hailee Steinfeld? Kaya Scodelario? Abigail Breslin? In the end, MTV News had the pleasure of revealing that then-20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who nabbed an Oscar nomination for her work in 2010’s “Winter’s Bone,” would enter the arena as the much-loved heroine. But Who Will Play Peeta and Gale? Similar speculation followed the casting of Katniss’ two love interests — fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark and hunting buddy Gale Hawthorne. Nine young actors were reportedly in contention for one of the two roles, including “Weeds” star Hunter Parrish and “Wizards of Waverly Place” actor David Henrie, but, ultimately, Josh Hutcherson landed the role of Peeta while Liam Hemsworth won Gale. First Look at Lawrence as Katniss Salivating fans didn’t have to wait too long for their first taste of Lawrence as Katniss, as she posed for the cover of Entertainment Weekly, flaunting the tribute’s soon-to-be-iconic uniform . The styled snap quieted many critics who’d said the actress was too blond, too tall, too pretty or too whatever for the role. Cinna Will Rock There were no shortage of casting announcements in spring 2011, but none seemed to catch watchful fans off guard more than that of Lenny Kravitz landing the role of Katniss’ stylist Cinna. But, really, it made a lot of sense, considering the musician’s fondness for fashion. “I like clothes, and I like playing with clothes. Every now and again, you go south. It’s all good. I enjoy fashion as an art,” he told MTV News . The Mockingjay Catches Fire In a nifty bit of promotion, Lionsgate released the first “Hunger Games” poster in July, and it was literally on fire. Well, sorta. The one-sheet depicted Katniss’ infamous talisman — a mockingjay pin — wreathed in glowing flames. The eye-catching motion poster definitely gave fans something to chew on while they waited for more first looks. We Spy Two “Hunger Games” Hotties Following in co-star Lawrence’s footsteps, the men of “The Hunger Games” landed their own EW cover story , in which Hutcherson took the opportunity to quiet a few nagging concerns about his stature.”Jennifer’s not 2 feet taller than me!” he told the magazine. “If anything, maybe she’s a half-inch taller.” November 2013 Is “Catching Fire” We hadn’t even seen a frame of the first film yet, yet Lionsgate announced a November 22, 2013, release date for the follow-up, “Catching Fire.” With “The Twilight Saga” taking its final winter bow in 2012, it looks like “The Hunger Games” is poised to be the new holiday tentpole. A Tasty Tease All those cover images and promotional stills went only so far to sate fans’ appetites. A cinematic preview was in order, and we at MTV were happy to deliver. During the closing moments of this year’s Video Music Awards, viewers were treated to a 30-second sneak peek , following Katniss as she sprinted through the arena’s blazing forest, with Gale’s words of encouragement resounding in her ears. Sure, the bite was short, but it was still satisfying. First Full-Length Trailer Nearly three lean months followed before the first full-length trailer made its entrance into the arena. And boy, was it worth the wait. From the tearful reaping to the Games’ taut opening moments, the clip was one of our top teases of the year , offering a promise of the big-screen awesomeness to follow. ‘Hunger Games’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

The Reaping, Katniss’ training and a tribute heart-to-heart are must-see moments from new clip. Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate The first full-length trailer for 2012’s ” The Hunger Games ,” starring Jennifer Lawrence , Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth , set the internet ablaze Monday (November 14) after its debut on “Good Morning America,” and there’s plenty for fans to dissect in the clip—despite the fact that it centers almost exclusively on the first half of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome. Let the Games begin as we dive into the five key moments from the trailer: The Reaping Arguably the most pivotal and moving moment from the trailer, The Reaping sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the country of Panem. After Primrose Everdeen’s name is selected by mentor Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) to participate in the 74th annual Hunger Games, sister Katniss steps in to take her place. “I volunteer. I volunteer as tribute,” she screams as Peacekeepers hold her at bay. Baker’s son Peeta Mellark is selected next, cementing the duo that will represent the impoverished community of District 12. Katniss Hits the Bulls Eye All those years of hunting for game outside of District 12 have paid off for Katniss. We get a look at the training session for the Hunger Games and see our heroine in action, being pretty badass with a bow and arrow. For a split-second during the scene, we catch a glimpse of some of the other tributes, including Rue and Cato. Yet, it’s a wig-wearing Woody Harrleson as Haymitch who says, “This is the time to show them everything. Make sure they remember you.” When the tribute pulls back, releases her arrow and hits her mark, we realize, as does Gamemaker Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley), that Katniss is the real deal. Katniss Wears The Mockingjay In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, a gleaming Mockingjay pin is pressed into Katniss’ palm as a good-luck charm for the Games. Though we can’t tell for sure who gifts her with the talisman (in the novel it’s friend Madge Undersee), the Mockingjay comes to represent Katniss in the Games…and beyond. Peeta And Katniss Share A Moment We finally hear Peeta speak! Fans have been anxiously waiting to see how Hutcherson will play the role of Peeta, and it looks like he has perfected not only the character, but the blond hair as well. Peeta and Katniss meet on the rooftop of the training center to discuss their fates. Peeta expresses his concern in keeping his identity while fighting in the games, yet Katniss’ only thought is how she will survive. It’s the first time we see these two have a moment together, and there is an undeniable chemistry between them. We cannot wait to see how the love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta plays out! The Cornucopia Our only look at the titular Games, Katniss emerges from underneath the arena to face the 23 tributes tasked with killing each other. Upon the countdown, they bolt towards the Cornucopia, a macabre collection of weapons and assets to aid their quest for victory. How will it all play out? You’ll have to flock to theaters March 23, 2012 to find out! Related Videos Reactions To The First ‘Hunger Games’ Trailer Related Photos ‘Hunger Games’ Character Posters

‘Hunger Games’ Trailer To Debut On ‘Good Morning America’

In MTV News’ inaugural Hobnobbing column, we list the things we don’t want to see in the new clip on Monday. By Amy Wilkinson Photo: Murray Close/ Lionsgate Entertainment “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!” OK, I’m still perfecting my Effie Trinket impression, but consider this your official welcome to Hobnobbing, MTV News’ brand-new column dedicated to all things perfectly Panem. Each week, we’ll dissect the latest ” Hunger Games ” news, fangirl over Katniss Everdeen or simply share our surefire recipe for Peeta bread. This is one arena we’re sure you won’t mind entering. Today the talk of the tributes is clearly the premiere of the full-length “Hunger Games” trailer, set to debut on “Good Morning America” on Monday, November 14. Following the MTV Video Music Awards sneak peek of Katniss hurtling herself through a fire-washed forest, we compiled a list of the five things we wanted to see in an extended clip (which included, among other things, the reaping, Peeta and the Capitol). So in this week’s Hobnobbing, we’re turning that idea on its head and listing the three things we don’t want to see in the trailer. Let me explain. Trailers of late have garnered a bit of criticism for giving away too much (plot, punch lines, etc.), and I don’t disagree. Let’s leave a little mystery, studios! While I’ll be lining up for “The Hunger Games” regardless, there are a few moments that I think would be best served by a silver-screen reveal. Here they are: 1. Katniss’ Girl on Fire costume In my original wish list, I asked for a scene featuring Katniss expertly styled by Cinna and hinted at the possibility of her enflamed entrance into the arena. But on second thought, I’ve decided this moment deserves a similarly grand introduction — on a 70-foot movie screen. (Though I’ll still take Katniss done up for Caesar Flickerman’s talk show….) 2. The muttations Though “The Hunger Games” obviously isn’t a monster movie, the arena’s rife with its own unholy terrors, chief of which are the genetically engineered wolves spliced with fallen tribute DNA. (I shudder just thinking about this.) The best scary-movie trailers leave the bogeyman out of sight, creating heightened suspense, and these lupine nightmares deserve the same sort of treatment. 3. Any character deaths Author Suzanne Collins does not pull any punches killing off the tributes of the 74th Hunger Games, and while we’re curious to see how this violence translates in the movie adaptation, a 2-3 minute trailer is not the place for these grisly finales. (Especially if the trailer is to be suitable for all audiences.) Do you agree, “Hunger Games” fans? What do you not want to see in the trailer? ‘The Hunger Games’: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Brush up on your districts before Jennifer Lawrence presents an exclusive sneak peek from the movie on Sunday! By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate Welcome to the dystopian world of “The Hunger Games.” North America is no more. Natural disasters and war did away with the continent we knew and gave rise to a whole new land called Panem: 13 districts overseen by an authoritarian Capitol. Then came the Dark Days, a power-to-the-people, down-with-the-Man revolution that obliterated one district and resulted in an annual, gladiatorial tournament known as the Hunger Games. Now meet Katniss Everdeen, an impoverished teen who feeds her family thanks to some badass bow-and-arrow skills and a stubborn refusal to play by the Capitol’s rules. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark — hardly friends, nor possessing the bloodthirsty verve of their opponents — find themselves reluctant participants in the 74th Hunger Games. What happens from there forms the basis of Suzanne Collins’ page-turner of a novel, which Lionsgate is now adapting for the big screen with an eye on a March 2012 release. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the franchise or all this Katniss craziness is totally new to you, now’s the time to get up to speed on all there is to know about the Jennifer Lawrence-starring film . Because at the 2011 Video Music Awards on Sunday, MTV is set to debut the first-ever look at footage from the flick. So check out our “Hunger Games” cheat sheet for everything there is to know before the big show. The Reaping In March of 2009, Lionsgate snapped up the rights to “Hunger Games,” which was published the previous fall. It was the first volume of what would become a trilogy — and a New York Times best-seller for more than 100 weeks. The key question among fans quickly became, ‘Who will play Katniss?’ We had some initial suggestions — including “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” star Jodelle Ferland — but early reports suggested “Kick Ass” star Chlo

Eddie Cibrian: Naked For Charisma!

Eddie Cibrian stars in The Playboy Club on NBC this September. Also coming this fall? Another starring role, in an ad campaign for Charisma bath and bedding products! The handsome actor, who married LeAnn Rimes in April, poses in various states of undress in his photos … Cibrian has never been shy about flaunting his toned physique: he hits the beach with his wife quite often, and to stay in shape, regularly visits the gym. He follows in some gorgeous footsteps: Sex and the City‘s Jason Lewis and Halle Berry‘s ex Gabriel Aubry have both been in the buff for Charisma, too. Interestingly, Eddie’s former wife, Brandi Glanville, can also be seen on TV soon, having joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 2 cast. Follow the jump for another of Cibrian’s Charisma shots:

The Hunger Games Casts Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg

Two more roles in The Hunger Games have been filled. Lionsgate has confirmed that the parts of Rue and Thresh of District 11 have officially been cast – Dayo Okeniyi will play strong and quiet District 11 tribute Thresh, while Amandla Stenberg will play Katniss Everdeen’s young ally Rue. Photos of these two relative newcomers … These two look the part(s), but as far as acting chops, they’re unproven. Doesn’t mean they won’t pass muster, of course. Everyone starts somewhere. The pair joins Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth , who recently won the roles of Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively, in the new film. The gorgeous, talented Jennifer Lawrence will play Katniss, of course. Who’s still left to be cast? One major part – the role of Haymitch Abernathy, the only living Hunger Games winner of District 12 – is still vacant.

Jennifer Lawrence Loves The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen as Much as You Do

Jennifer Lawrence cannot WAIT to star in The Hunger Games . The actress says that while she may not look much like the way Katniss Everdeen is described in the book series, she was a big fan long before she was cast as the character in the film adaptation and can’t wait to bring her to life. She hopes her own Hunger Games fanhood will help , as well. “The cool thing about Katniss is that every fan has such a personal relationship with her, they know and understand her in a singular way,” she says. “I’m a massive fan, so I get it.” Director Gary Ross and author Suzanne Collins have spoken out in defense of casting Lawrence as Katniss , despite the perceived physical differences. “She’s incredibly powerful, brave, and tough, and yet she has great tenderness and complexity,” says Jennifer, who earned an Oscar nod for Winter’s Bone . “It was very humbling hearing that Suzanne and Gary feel I embody those traits.” Other traits she says she embodies? Grittiness and toughness: “I was a cheerleader for six years, but I have a totally competitive side. I’ll wrestle anyone at any time. I was the manliest cheerleader. I had the lowest voice.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Rebecca Black’s Film Debut Sunday Comes Afterwards: A Musical Armageddon

Already sick of next year’s April Fools’ Day? Renew your faith with this Funny or Die preview for Rebecca Black’s “Friday” film adaptation, Sunday Comes Afterwards , which sounds like a delightful Tennessee Williams tale. Unfortunately, it’s an apocalyptic thriller. The lack of Auto-Tune during Rebecca’s triumphant call of “I don’t want this world to ennnnnd ” is a cinematic touchstone for the ages.
