The Mysterious Alvin Greene Ends Awkward Video Week With a Bang

How are you enjoying Awkward Video Week at Movieline? No one here could ever have planned such a cringe-y success, and certainly no one anywhere could have imagined it might include such diverse personalities as Salma Hayek , Patrick Stewart , Natalie Portman and Alvin Greene. “Wait,” you say. “Who’s Alvin Greene?” Well, that’s the thing: Nobody effing knows. But Keith Olbermann was determined to find out Thursday night — and that’s when the AVW grand finale got underway.

Olbermann Lobs Softballs At Hapless Alvin Greene; Imagine If He Was Republican

The man that surprisingly won Tuesday’s Democrat primary for senator in South Carolina was interviewed by Keith Olbermann Thursday, and a more hapless candidate might never before have appeared on the national stage. Despite Alvin Greene’s stumbling, seemingly unaware persona, the “Countdown” host never seriously grilled him about anything concerning how he could possibly have won this primary without holding any campaign functions, distributing any campaign signs or literature, or creating a website. As you watch this tremendously uncomfortable interview, imagine how Greene would have been treated by Olbermann if he was a Republican (video follows with commentary, h/t Right Scoop ): Wow! Is that what MSNBC considers journalism?  Nice job, Keith. Your hero Edward R. Murrow would be so proud!

Rabbi That Filmed Helen Thomas’s Anti-Semitism Gets 25,000 Hate Emails

It’s not just members of the media standing up to support disgraced journalist Helen Thomas after her unscheduled retirement caused by anti-Semitic remarks she made  on camera last week. The rabbi that caught her disgusting comments on videotape and put them on the Internet has received 25,000 hate-email messages – and counting. Hours after MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann actually called Rabbi David Nesenoff one of his “Worst Persons in the World,” CBS-TV in New York reported the vicious electronic attacks streaming into the rabbi’s inbox like a “ticker tape” (video follows with partial transcript, h/t HotAirPundit ): ROB MORRISON, CBS2 NEW YORK: Four days ago Long Island Rabbi David Nesenoff launched his new website with these now-infamous comments from legendary journalist Helen Thomas. MORRISON: The veteran newswoman apologized and then retired. Since then, Rabbi Nesenoff says the hate mail has been pouring in.  RABBI DAVID NESENOFF: As we’re talking here, right now, the emails on my email are like a ticker tape. It’s been this way for a week. It’s going, going, going.  MORRISON: 25,000 and counting — messages like:  “The Jews need to go home just like the filthy illegals that plague America, same (expletive).”  “I know your type you gentile hating Jew boy. Come and face me turd. I’ll smash u under my boot.”  “Hitler was right. Time for you to go back in the oven.”  Most of the senders not even bothering to hide their email addresses.  NESENOFF: These are people that feel very mainstream about anti-Semitism and hate. They feel so proud of it. There is an arrogance about it. There is no shame. There certainly isn’t, nor is there any shame from media members likely missing what the real story is here: rampant anti-Semitism in America and how it goes largely over-looked by our press. In this instance, so-called journalists in their zeal to support Thomas are even defending it. By contrast, any incident of possible racism towards minorities will get great attention by the affirmative action supporting press. Take for example the CNN.com report Wednesday that blamed white people for President Obama’s pathetic response to the Gulf Coast oil spill. Since Obama threw his name into the ring as a presidential candidate back in February 2007, his adoring press have tried to bring race into the discussion whenever possible.  Consider how quickly the Cambridge police department was labeled racist during last July’s Henry Louis Gates Jr. episode. Media then conveniently called it a “teachable moment” about race relations in this country. So why isn’t the nation’s longest living member of the White House press corps making disgustingly anti-Semitic remarks to a rabbi a “teachable moment?” Far from it, as NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell noted Tuesday, “[T]he only soundbites came from sympathetic media colleagues, wishing her well.” So what did Americans learn from THIS moment? If you’re a journalist that makes an anti-Semitic remark, your colleagues will support you. Isn’t that a nice lesson as anti-Semitic acts of violence around the world continue to rise? Or hadn’t you heard that such attacks more than doubled last year? Oh. That’s right. You couldn’t have known that, for our media chose NOT to report it .  Wasn’t that convenient?  Add it all up, and just as our press exploit real or imagined racism to advance their agenda ESPECIALLY if it can help an elected official they support, anti-Semitic acts are not only regularly ignored but also excused if need be. Why this is still the case 65 years after the few surviving Jews were liberated from Nazi death camps after World War II is truly astounding.

Keith Olbermann Continues to Slam Bill Simmons

Man, how low must the ratings of MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olberman n fallen?!? After all, we can only imagine the host’s random, personal attacks against ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons stem from a need to garner attention. You can get caught up on the feud HERE , but in a nutshell: Simmons wrote an article in which he said the upcoming Tiger Woods comeback would be more challenging than the boxing return of Muhammad Ali in the early 1970s, which was a result of the latter’s stance on the Vietnam war. It was a controversial stance, one clearly meant to elicit opinion and feedback. That’s often a columnist’s job. But Olbermann didn’t attack the content of the argument, he attacked Simmons himself. At first, the MSNBC anchor wrote that Simmons had no “discernible insight or talent.” To this insult, Bill Tweeted that Olbermann is “a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.” He has since left it alone, Tweeting again last night: I’ve said enough. This was not why I got into writing. But Olbermann, for whatever reason, is just getting started. In a new online rant , Olbermann writes: “Anybody who could write as many words without saying anything of consequence really should throw around the word “blowhard” as frequently as he would a street sewer cover.” Olbermann also claims he’s received emails from those high up at ESPN “thanking me for pointing out the absurdity of, and the embarrassment to ESPN provided by, the Woods/Ali comparison.” He then implies that Simmons is the most “uncontrollable, unmanageable talent” in the history of ESPN and that any comment defending The Sports Guy on Olbermann’s blog must be written by Simmons himself “under various identities.” It’s hard to even know where to begin in response to Olbermann’s utter nonsense: First, feel free to dislike the niche Simmons has created. But he’s the most read online columnist alive. His most recent book was number-one on The New York Times Bestsellers List. To claim that any defense of Simmons can only be penned by the man himself is laughable. He’s hugely popular, Keith. That’s just a fact. Live with it. In this feud Olbermann has concocted, he’s written about 500 words. Simmons has written about 12. The latest rant comes immediately after a section of his blog in which Olbermann discusses his gravely ill father. That’s… strange. As for the content of Simmons’ article, Olbermann continues to miss the point: No one is placing Tiger and Ali’s reasons for exile on the same level; Simmons is focusing on the difficulty each faced upon their return, relative to the public sentiment at the time. IF YOU DON’T LIKE BILL SIMMONS, DON’T READ HIM. Sorry, we got carried away with that last point. But Olbermann is entitled to his opinion. Still, that doesn’t explain his petty, public, unprofessional response. Actually, maybe it does: Olbermann simply is petty and unprofessional.

Bill Simmons vs. Keith Olbermann: The War of Words

Earlier this week, Bill Simmons (aka “The Sports Guy”) penned an online column , which argued the following thesis: The eventual comeback by Tiger Woods on the golf course will be more difficult than the in-ring return of Muhammad Ali, following his hiatus from boxing that stemmed from avoiding the Vietnam War draft. It’s a controversial stance, one meant to elicit opinions and one defended by nine well-reasoned points. So, how did MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann react? By immaturely taking to his blog and writing: If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously. In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly. Simmons then Tweeted in response: KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone. We love any war of words between two outspoken individuals, but must side with Simmons in this case. First, Mr. Olbermann, as long-time readers of The Sports Guy, we can tell you how he rose to his position as the top columnist at ESPN.com: By earning a Master’s in Journalism from Boston University; slogging away for years as a bartender while creating/building his own website; and being discovered by ESPN after he earned a loyal online following. Some journalists may look down on Simmons because he represents the age of new media, in which a writer can thrive on the Internet without ever speaking to an athlete or going inside a locker room for his columns. But such a niche still requires wit, knowledge and hard work. Moreover, Olbermann has risen to his level of notoriety due to a similar recent phenomenon: the opinionated, 24/7 news cycle. Finally, go ahead and disagree with Simmons’ take on Woods vs. Ali. But do it in a respectful manner. A few days ago, Simmons took part in a Podcast with fellow ESPN columnist Rick Reilly because the pair has contrasting opinions on the Tiger Woods press conference . Simmons isn’t afraid to mix it up – professionally, respectfully – with those that don’t share his points of view. But Olbermann was clearly using this Woods’ column as an excuse to bitterly rail against The Sports Guy’s overall success. That’s just petty. Choose a side in this feud:
