Kelly Clarkson’s National Anthem Kicks Off Super Bowl

‘Star Spangled Banner’ was preceded by Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton performing ‘America the Beautiful.’ By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson performs at Super Bowl 46 Photo: Ezra Shaw/ Getty Images Kelly Clarkson rose to fame singing on national television, so it’s no surprise that the original “American Idol” champ soared high with her rendition of the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday night (February 5). Wearing a sleek black dress, Miss Independent stood confidently on a small blue-and-white stage at the showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Giants at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. As Clarkson belted out “The Star Spangled Banner” alongside a full marching band and a crowd of children, cameras panned to several members of the teams as they looked toward the sky. Proving herself as a true big-voiced diva, the singer hit all the right notes, adding in some signature riffing at the end of the song. Even though her performance went smooth, KC admitted having some early jitters about singing the patriotic tune. On Friday, she took to her Who Say account to share her two cents about rehearsal time: “Just finished rehearsing the anthem in Indy … wow, I’m actually really nervous about singing at the Super Bowl ha!” she wrote. “Here’s hoping I nail it and don’t screw it up!” Clarkson’s performance was preceded by country music couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, who delivered a duet of “America the Beautiful” during pre-game festivities. Super Bowl Prop Bets: Wager On Madonna’s Mic, More

Will Kelly Clarkson show her midriff? What will Madge wear at halftime? Pop-culture bets give football-phobes plenty to tune in for Sunday. By James Montgomery Madonna Photo: Daniel Mihailescu/ AFP/ Getty Images Not to get all general here, but when you get down to it, there are really only two types of people in the world: those who care about the Super Bowl and those who don’t. The former will need absolutely zero incentive to tune into this Sunday’s retribution-stoked Super Bowl XLVI, which pits the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in a rematch of one of the most epic Supes of all time, XLII, which saw — wait, if you’re going to watch, you already know what happened in that first championship tilt (David Tyree, Plax Burress on the slant-and-go, 18-1, etc.), and suffice it to say, you’re salivating with anticipation over the next chapter in this rivalry. For the latter, well, that last paragraph probably makes about as much sense as the fact that the New York Giants actually play their home games in New Jersey, and, as such, there’s no way you’re going to waste your Sunday watching what amounts to 240 minutes of commercials intermittently broken up by the occasional football play (unless you’re anxiously awaiting the premiere of “The Voice,” that is). But, really, you should reconsider that stance — mainly because of prop bets. For the uninitiated, props (short for “propositions”) are bets placed on the occurrence — or non-occurrence — of events during a game that have little-to-no actual impact on the outcome of that game. Stuff like “Which color Gatorade will the winning team dump on its head coach” or “Number of times (insert name of famous athlete’s girlfriend) will be shown during the TV telecast.” They are supremely silly, not to mention incredibly suicidal, wagers, and not surprisingly — given that it’s the biggest football game of the year — Las Vegas oddsmakers work overtime churning them out during the Super Bowl. Shoot, more often than not, most of those Super Bowl props have absolutely nothing to do with the game itself. There are not only odds on the length of Kelly Clarkson’s national anthem performance, but what kind of outfit she’ll be wearing while singing it. Which means that, whether you know who BenJarvus Green-Ellis is or not, there are still plenty of reasons to tune in to Sunday’s big game. So in the hopes of inspiring you non-fans to watch, we’ve reached out to the online oddsmakers at to get their lines on some of the most outrageous Super Bowl prop bets. And in case you’re wondering: Yes, there’s a science to these kinds of things. “I sat down and watched six to seven videos of Kelly Clarkson singing the anthem at past sporting events, timing all of them,” Bovada head oddsmaker Pat Morrow told MTV News. “Once that was done, I took some things into consideration: that she will be indoors, [that] it is the Super Bowl and people have tendency to take a little longer, and came up with 1 minute, 34 seconds. And I think we are bang-on, because we have had it up over a week and have taken a lot on both sides and have not had to move the number.” See! So, without further ado, are some of our favorite music-centric prop bets. Oh, and we realize some of the numbers may confuse you, so just consider this: If you were to place $100 on a 2/1 bet, and win, you’d walk away with $200 (plus your $100 back). Conversely, that $100 on a 1/2 bet would net you just $50. If you were to bet $100 on a +200 line, it means you’d take home $200 in profit (plus your initial $100). A line of -200 means you’d need to bet $200 just to win $100 (the more probable the outcome, the more you have to put up to turn a profit; Vegas wasn’t built on winners, after all). Oh, and an over/under bet is simply a wager on whether an event will go over or under the stated time. Confused? Of course you are. After all, prop bets aren’t supposed to be about logic, they’re supposed to be about insanity. So let’s take a look at the lines! How long will it take Kelly Clarkson to sing the National Anthem? Over/under: 1 minute, 34 seconds. What will Kelly Clarkson wear to sing the national anthem?

Poor Newt Gingrich. Already under siege from Super PACs, media members and politicians in the tank for Mitt Romney , guy is about to lose his own theme song! The candidate is being sued by a company which owns the rights to Survivor’s 1982 hit “Eye of the Tiger,” for using the inspirational Rocky III tune at campaign events. Rude Music Inc., owned by a member of Survivor, filed the suit against Newt for jacking the song to push a political agenda … that the band clearly isn’t a fan of. Rihanna To Perform With Coldplay At Grammys

‘We Found Love’ singer will join band for ‘Princess of China.’ By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: WireImage Rihanna and Coldplay will perform live together for the first time on February 12 when they take the stage at the 54th annual Grammy Awards for the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration, “Princess of China.” Rihanna, nominated for four Grammys this year, broke the news on Twitter , writing, “My friends @ColdPlay and I will be sharing the stage for a performance at this years Annual Grammy Awards!” A short time later she added, “WE reached 2BILLION views on @youtube !!! THANK U!!! I’m in a great mood, and I got some GREAT NEWS!!! PRINCESS OF CHINA #GRAMMYS2012.” The show, which will be hosted by rapper LL Cool J , will also feature a performance by rock icon Paul McCartney, who will join a lineup that already includes Grammy nominees Foo Fighters, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Marks, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean. At the time Xyloto was released , Coldplay singer Chris Martin explained that the decision to invite another voice into the studio was made because of the unusual story arc of the band’s Grammy-nominated album. “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. … When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music,” Martin told MTV News. “Our new record is sort of a story; it’s not quite a musical, but it’s dangerously close. There’s a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me,” Martin said. “[It’s] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will [Champion]’s good intentions, he [can’t do it] … “… So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I’d secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it,” Martin continued. “And then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK.” More Grammy performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. ‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Three Things We Want To See

From Eva Green’s witch, Angelique, to what’s really up with Dr. Hoffman, here are the top things we’re itching to see. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on the set of “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures We are just five months away from the release of the hottest vampire movie that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine, and we’re starting to get excited. Very excited. But unlike the other major movies that have earned themselves a column here at MTV — “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga” — we are still waiting for a trailer for “Dark Shadows.” And, well, we’re starting to get pretty impatient. So far, director Tim Burton has kept a tight lid on his vampire soap opera — only a few official pics from the set (and one much-discussed paparazzi shot of Johnny Depp in character as Barnabas Collins) have been released. But the new year should bring fresh blood. We know filming has wrapped and that things apparently went so well on set that Michelle Pfeiffer told MTV News while promoting “New Year’s Eve” that working on “Dark Shadows” was “a dream job.” Pfeiffer, who plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, added that she hopes the film does well so “we can do a bunch of them, because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Whether that on-set camaraderie will translate into the campy big-screen spook-fest we’re hoping for remains to be seen, and while we hope the trailer doesn’t give too much away, here are a few things we’re hoping to see when it arrives. 1. Eva Green in action as Angelique Angelique Bouchard is the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire in the late 1700s after their affair went sour. She’s a woman with an axe to grind and has been haunting and cursing the Collins family ever since. So far, the only image we’ve seen of Green in character is the full cast shot, in which she stands in the background wearing modern clothes. We hope the trailer gives us a taste of how the “Casino Royale” Bond girl is going to play the over-the-top villainess. This is a scenery-chewing role that any actress worth her salt would have a field day with. We have faith that the super sexy starlet will do it justice, but a little advance evidence would be nice. We want to see corsets, blood and maybe a voodoo doll or two. 2. A little insight into what Dr. Hoffman is up to For us, one of the biggest mysteries of the film is exactly what role Helena Bonham Carter’s Dr. Julia Hoffman will play in the shenanigans at Collinwood Mansion. The actress has described her character as “an alcoholic psychologist,” and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith told Entertainment Weekly that Hoffman “has been there for years, working with David [Collins] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother.” Grahame-Smith goes on to describe the character as “a woman with a lot of secrets herself” who is “interested in Barnabas in more than one way.” What no one has mentioned is Hoffman’s role, in the original series, as a blood disorders specialist who attempts to cure Barnabas of his vampirism. We’ll be watching this trailer very closely to see if HBC is carrying more vials than she is notepads. 3. Collinwood Mansion We got a glimpse of the manor in the cast shot, with its Gothic windows and ancient-looking rugs, but we’re excited to see the rest of the haunted mansion. Overlooking the Atlantic from Collinsport, Maine, the house contains a room that is a gateway to a parallel time, for goodness’ sake. Given that so much of the action of the series takes place within the walls of the mansion, we’re really hoping that Burton and his first-class team of art directors, set designers and cinematographers got it right and captured the regal horror of the place. Kelly Clarkson Talks About Reuniting With ‘SNL’ ‘Family’

Saturday will be the pop singer’s third time as the show’s musical guest. By Jim Cantiello Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News This weekend, Kelly Clarkson is making her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” as the musical guest. But the bubbly singer insists that being a part of NBC’s iconic show will never feel old hat. “I’m a three-peat! I’ve made it,” Clarkson exclaimed to MTV News when we caught up with her at rehearsals. “It’s a legendary stage! I’ve been watching it since I was a kid. I think we all have.” More so than the enormity of playing Studio 8H, Clarkson said she digs the vibe of the cast and crew. “It’s a fun environment. You don’t feel like you’re working … This is like a family place. Everybody here is nice to people who aren’t famous. You know what I’m saying? They’re nice to my makeup artist, my hair guy … I hate people who are just nice to famous people. It bothers me. I want to kick ’em,” she chuckled. Clarkson still thinks about her first appearance on “SNL” in 2005, when she became the first “American Idol” winner to snag a musical guest spot. Even cooler, she got to flex her comedic muscles in a couple of skits with former cast members Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz. “I remember I was so excited. First of all, Horatio? He’s hard to do skits with because you laugh ’cause he laughs all the time at [himself]. So you’re laughing ’cause he’s laughing, and I’m trying to keep a straight face. I had so much fun.” But this go-around, Clarkson’s too busy to participate in any sketches, even though the politically charged “SNL” could write comedy gold for Clarkson, who recently found herself in the middle of the presidential race when she casually tweeted about digging Ron Paul’s campaign . The singer’s always down to poke fun at herself and be goofy, but alas, tour rehearsals are top priority. “We’re literally flying in and out [of New York]. Charles Barkley’s hosting, so he’s doing all the skits.” Kelly fans can still look forward to two high-energy performances. During Saturday night’s show, Clarkson and her band will rock her #1 single, “Mr. Know It All,” as well as her latest hit, “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kelly Clarkson Related Artists Kelly Clarkson

Pill Says He Never Signed To Rick Ross’ Maybach Music

‘I ain’t got nothing against none of them, nobody,’ rapper tells MTV News of the label. By Rob Markman Rick Ross and Pill Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Pill has caused quite the stir. Last week, after the Atlanta rapper took to Twitter to vent about his label situation , speculation began to swirl that P-I-Double L was dropped from the Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Warner Bros. distributed-label. But seeing as Pill was never technically signed to MMG, that isn’t necessarily the case. “I never signed any paperwork with Ross. It was just my deal was over at Warner already,” Pill revealed to MTV News Tuesday. According to the “Trap Goin’ Ham” MC, he was signed to Asylum/Warner Bros. Records at the end of 2009, a year before Ross brought his MMG label over to Warner Music Group. Pill says he is unaware of any conversations that Warner and Ross ever had concerning his career, but started receiving calls from Rozay around this time last year. The calls turned into collaborations — many of which ended up on Self Made Vol. 1 , Ross’ MMG label compilation album. It was alluded that Pill was officially a part of Rozay’s roster, along with Wale, Meek Mill and a host of other artists, but that wasn’t the case, the rapper says. During his December 28 Twitter rant, Pill, who made a name for himself with independently released singles like “Ok Denn,” criticized Warner, charging that they didn’t give him the proper push on radio and television. “I bet u can name you favorite artist and the turn on the tv and see the video and hear it on the radio. It’s not rocket science,” he wrote. Pill was particularly disappointed that “Pac Man,” his single from Self Made Vol.1 didn’t get a push, even after noted rappers 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti and Meek Mill were added to the song’s remix. “To have all that set in stone, I thought it would’ve been pushed a little bit harder, went a little bit further, but it didn’t,” he said. Maybach did include Pill on a number of label-driven initiatives, he admits. He was on the October 2011 XXL magazine group cover, appeared on “RapFix Live” with MMG in May 2011 and took part in the pre-taped crew cypher during BET’s Hip Hop Awards but was noticeably absent when Ross, Wale and Meek Mill performed during the actual ceremony. “I never really went on tour with them; I never really did anything with them,” Pill said. “The only time I performed on tour with them is when it stopped in Atlanta. They still showed love to a n—a when it was time to go to Vegas, or Cali, you know, whatever the label had put together for us to be on as a whole.” Currently the rapper’s lawyers are attempting to dissolve the Warner contract, and as for MMG, Pill insists he harbors no ill will and is grateful for the exposure that Ross has given him — even though he doesn’t remember the last time he and the Bawse spoke. “I ain’t got nothing against none of them, nobody. It’s just the situation don’t work,” Pill said matter-of-factly. “It’s cool with us, I don’t got nothing against Ross either. It’s just I don’t talk to him. “I ain’t really got too much to say to somebody that ain’t got too much to say to me. I’m not a brownnose, I ain’t a punk ass n—a and I’m not finna go trying to chase behind somebody that ain’t sayin’ nothing to me.” Related Artists Rick Ross

Ron Paul Supporters Boost Kelly Clarkson’s Album Sales

Republican presidential hopeful even shouts out the singer in a speech leading up to the Iowa caucus. By James Montgomery Ron Paul Photo: Getty Images Even as he continues to battle for votes in the final hours of the Iowa caucus , Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is already a front-runner in another contest: the quest for celebrity endorsements. Yes, in recent days, Paul has surged to the forefront of high-profile support, picking up the backing of singers Kelly Clarkson and Michelle Branch (both of whom subsequently felt the wrath of Paul’s detractors, though, hey, Clarkson may have gotten a sales bump out of it). But they’re just the latest in a list of seemingly disparate stars who have endorsed the candidate. “Fear Factor” host/ UFC fanatic Joe Rogan has already gone on the record as saying he supports Paul’s candidacy, as has comedian Doug Stanhope and actor Vince Vaughn, who introduced him at a political conference in Nevada back in September. Staind frontman Aaron Lewis is also onboard. In a speech Tuesday (January 3) at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa — given to an audience of young voters — Paul even mentioned Clarkson by name, asking the assembled students, “Does anybody here know the name Kelly Clarkson? … Recently, she endorsed me. … I had to admit, I didn’t know a whole lot about her, but I did know that our supporters were so enthusiastic about it they went out and bumped up sales of her record by 600 percent.” MTV is on the scene in Iowa!
