Phillip Phillips Won’t Take Credit For ‘Home’ At ‘American Idol’ Finale

‘It’s not really something I would write, so I’m excited to get my own stuff out there,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips on the “American Idol” finale red carpet Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images As has been his M.O. throughout this 11th season of “American Idol,” Phillip Phillips wowed the crowd and the judges with his show-stopping final performance of would-be single “Home.” MTV News was lucky enough to chat with Phillips on the red carpet leading up to the big finale Wednesday (May 23), where he revealed a few details about how he wound up choosing the rootsy ballad. “It wasn’t really too much of a process,” Phillips admitted with his trademark “aw, shucks” smile. “I got to hear it once and they said, ‘Would you like to do it?’ ” Obviously, Phillips did want to do that song, a smart decision that led to the evening’s only standing ovation from the judges. However, if the Georgia native had to do it all over again, without the strict time constraints they work under on “Idol,” Phillips said he would have preferred to have performed his own original song. “I wanted to do my own stuff, but we only had a certain amount of time to do everything, so I had to do that one, and it’s a really good song,” he said. “The writers are really good. It’s not really something I would write, so I’m excited to get my own stuff out there.” We’re sure Phillips’ adoring fans are excited to listen to his “stuff” as well. In the meantime they can watch and re-watch the sweet-tempered 21-year-old’s final performance, complete with a marching band, to hold them over. Olivia Munn A ‘Voyeur’ On The ‘Magic Mike’ Set

Munn especially loved co-star Matt Bomer’s bum: ‘I just want to make wishes on it, it’s so beautiful.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Olivia Munn Photo: MTV News There’s so much man meat in the “Magic Mike” trailer that it’s easy to forget that there are actual ladies in the June film. Sure, “Mike” stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Joe Manganiello — we know, you need a second to catch your breath — but the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick also boasts some talented ladies, including Olivia Munn. When MTV News caught up with the actress — who was being honored by Us Weekly as a “sexy tomboy” at the mag’s Hot Hollywood event — she opened up about being around all those guys and loving each and every minute of it. “I think on set, with all these guys, I’m not a sexy tomboy; I’m not a tomboy; I’m not anything,” she said. “I’m just a voyeur, watching them.” She then recalled hitting the set long before her call time just to gawk at the studs. “I’m on set when I’m not even working for, like, four hours, but I heard they’re dancing and they’re going to be naked, so I’m gonna be here early watching. So that’s what I am on set: more the voyeur watching.” As for all the smooth moves, she shared that the film’s star — Magic Mike himself, Channing Tatum — might be the smoothest. “He’s truly, truly talented, and he’s so fun to watch, and it’s so sexy as well,” she said. “And then the person I was really impressed with was Matt Bomer, ’cause I didn’t know he could dance. He’s got this juicy butt. Like, I just want to make wishes on it, it’s so beautiful.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Magic Mike.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Will Justin Bieber Dress Up As Buzz Lightyear In ‘Boyfriend’ Video?

Singer weighs in on how literal the video will get and when fans might get to hear more from Believe. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News The countdown is on to Justin Bieber ‘s next album release, Believe . And if the response to the album’s first single, “Boyfriend,” is any indication, the record’s appeal might span far beyond the realm of his devoted Beliebers. “The reaction’s been great [to ‘Boyfriend’]; not only have I got good reactions from my fans, but great reactions from people who, you know, [might not usually listen to my music]. I’ve gotten messages like ‘You know, I never would have listened to Justin and now I love this song,’ ” he explained to MTV News. “So, it’s really great feedback.” It’s that kind of enthusiasm that Bieber is taking with him as he works on the record in its final stages. He’s already hit the studio with folks like Drake, will.i.am, Diplo and Usher and is just chugging along before he has to wrap up and send it out into the world. “There’s not a confirmed release date. It’s this summer. I’m really happy with the outcome of it so far,” he said. “I mean, we’re almost done. We’re just kind of putting the finishing touches on it. It should be good.” But before then, fans will have to satisfy their appetites with the Colin Tilley-directed “Boyfriend” video, which should drop in the near future. Unfortunately, the visual won’t mirror the single’s choice lyrics , “I could be your Buzz Lightyear/ Fly across the globe.” “No, no, I won’t be dressed up as Buzz Lightyear,” he said. “I think there’s some copyright issues, I can’t use that.” We look forward to seeing whether Bieber will be “Chillin’ by the fire while we eatin’ fondue” in the clip. Justin Bieber Says Believe ‘Definitely’ Has More Rapping

Of his rap alter ego Shawty Mane, who appears on ‘Boyfriend,’ Bieber tells MTV News, ‘It’s something that I love to do.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News When Justin Bieber dropped “Boyfriend,” he definitely channeled his rapper alter ego Shawty Mane on the verses, spewing lyrics like, “If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go/ I can take you places you ain’t never been before/ Baby take a chance or you’ll never ever know/ I got money in my hands that I’d really like to blow/ Swag swag swag, on you.” The song now has many fans wondering whether more rapping will appear on his upcoming album, Believe . When MTV News caught up with the teen star on the set of his “Boyfriend” video , he shared just how much rapping will make the final cut. “There’s not a lot of rapping on the album,” he said. “As people know, I’m a singer, and I don’t want to get people confused with that, but it’s something that I love to do, so you guys will definitely hear more of it.” Fans will also hear more rapping from Bieber’s pal Drake , who recently opened up about working with his friend on the release. “It sounds like everything you’d imagine a great Justin Bieber and Drake song would sound like,” the Take Care MC teased in an interview with Capital FM . Describing the process of making the track, he said he went about creating the song in a way he hadn’t done in the past. “We meet on the ground of melody. He’s always like, ‘Yo, your melodies are so crazy,’ and ‘Give me the craziest melody.’ So, we sat there for a night, and it was actually a great studio process,” Drake explained. “What we would do is he would go in the booth for 10 minutes, and he would hum melodies, and then he would walk out, and then I’d be like, ‘I like this one,’ and then I’d go in, and we started coaching each other and amping each other up.” Bieber also got a studio visit from Lil Wayne , but there’s been no word on whether the pair worked on any tracks for the album, dropping later this year. For anyone wondering if Bieber truly does have the swag to pull of those kinds of collaborations, “Boyfriend” writer/producer Mike Posner , who describes the song as “super hip-hop,” assures critics that Bieber has what it takes. “I think we’ve all known Justin since he was 13, and that’s not the kid I was in the studio with anymore,” Posner said. “He’s an 18-year-old. He skateboards with Lil Wayne and hangs out with Lil Twist. Those are his homeys. And he listens to hip-hop, and he’s a really cool kid. He’s not a corny guy.” Would you like to hear more rapping from Justin on Believe ? Tell us in the comments below! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Justin Bieber

DeAndre Brackensick: ‘Idol’ Viewers Love Or Hate My Voice

‘Back in the day, everybody was a falsetto singer; it’s just so unappreciated now,’ latest castoff tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino DeAndre Brackensick Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, “American Idol” bid adieu to its most follicly accomplished contestant, DeAndre Brackensick (no offense, Colton), who was given the boot following his performance of DeBarge’s “I Like It.” After his exit, Brackensick spoke to MTV News , expressing “no regrets” about anything he did during his run on “Idol” and remaining adamant that his falsetto — which somewhat mystified mentor Jimmy Iovine — wasn’t the reason for his departure. “Everyone has their opinion; my voice is one of the voices where either you love it or you can’t stand it, and I think Jimmy didn’t really have a feel for my voice,” he said. “But it’s fine, because I take everything he does say to me to heart, and I try to put it toward the next performance. I have much love for Jimmy.” And in keeping with both the “no regrets” sentiment and his belief in doing things his way, Brackensick said that he didn’t take his ouster — or the judges’ refusal to save him (no matter how hard Jennifer Lopez protested) — personally. After all, he feels he can leave the show with his head held high. “You always hope for the save, because [you] want to be with each other for another week,” he sighed. “But the saves happen for a reason; I’d already been saved once, so I can’t really be saved again. You only get so many chances in life. I’m just proud of myself and the accomplishments I’ve made already.” He’s hoping he’ll keep accomplishing things post-“Idol.” Like, for example, bringing back the sweet falsetto sounds of classic R&B and the genuine emotion of music — both of which he said are sorely missed in today’s music. “That R&B soul is just lacking nowadays in music. Back in the day, everybody was a falsetto singer; it’s just so unappreciated now,” he said. “That was one of the reasons why I wanted to sing an Eric Benet song. There’s so many talented people that are not getting the love they should, and I want to bring that old sound back. I don’t even want to be a huge star. I just want music to be known, and I want messages to be getting through, like it was back in the day.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
