Stone Temple Pilots Roar Back With ‘Between the Lines’ Video

Druggy clip has ‘an off point of view,’ Scott Weiland tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino On The Set Of ‘Between The Lines’ Video Photo: MTV News As anyone who caught Stone Temple Pilots’ recent run of shows can attest — which kicked off with a thunderous set at South by Southwest in March — after more than five years on the shelf, the alt-rock demigods certainly haven’t lost a step. But if you weren’t lucky enough to catch the first string of shows, don’t fret: Next week, STP will launch the second leg of their U.S. tour, which runs through June 5. (They’ll spend the summer darting across Europe, before returning to the stage in August.) On May 25, the band’s self-titled sixth album is due — their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da — and it features the snarling first single “Between the Lines.” Chances are, you’ve heard it, since it sits at #1 on Billboard ‘s rock chart. And now, there’s a video to go with it, a burner directed by Christopher Sims, who has helmed clips for the likes of Staind and Jimmy Eat World. And yes, it stands as further proof that STP are back. MTV News was on the set of the video, shot last month in Los Angeles. Much like the song, it’s a sweaty, claustrophobic affair, documenting frontman Scott Weiland’s past history of drug use. Portions of it were shot in gloriously blurry, swirly first-person, much like another debauched, druggy classic. “It’s sort of like an off point of view, similar to [the Prodigy’s] ‘Smack My Bitch Up,’ ” Weiland told MTV News. “[It] was one of the coolest videos that came out in the last 15 years.” But while the video does recall clips from the past, what’s most notable about it is how much it feels like classic STP. Weiland, the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz flail and hammer with artful abandon, and the song, with its chain-saw guitars and Weiland’s trademark gruff yowl, sounds like it could’ve been lifted from any of their previous albums. It’s a welcome return, to be certain, one that’s indebted to the past, yet deeply rooted in Weiland’s personal travails — something he’s not shying away from this time out. “The verse is sort of an ‘I Am the Walrus’ kind of thing, where it’s a bunch of stuff that phonetically sounds good,” he said alluding to the Beatles song. “And then you get to the meat of the idea in the chorus … it’s a reference to my ex. It’s a real rock-and-roll song that has our own individuality.” How does the “Between the Lines” video compare to the Prodigy’s ’97 clip? Share your take in the comments! Kate Nash Covers All The Bases On My Best Friend Is You

‘I don’t really stick to one thing,’ singer/songwriter says about the eclectic sounds on her new album. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Kate Nash Photo: MTV News Kate Nash is an extremely verbose 22-year-old British singer/songwriter who just released her second album, the extremely verbose My Best Friend Is You, an album that’s long on lyrics (most of them exceptionally funny, tender and/or biting) and even longer on musical influences. Here, in her own rapid-fire way, is her take the album: “How would I describe in a few words? Erratic, in the sense that I don’t really stick to one thing, because as a human being I go through different mood swings. Sometimes I want to do something raw and a bit more punk-y, like ‘I Just Love You More’ to ‘I Hate Seagulls,’ it’s a big difference … and fun, like, I like to have a sense of fun in what I write, and passionate, because I can only really do stuff I care about.” The follow-up to Nash’s 2007 debut Made of Bricks (an album that was a hit in her native U.K. thanks to the success of her single “Foundations” ), Best Friend explores the same lyrical themes as her first album — love, sadness, mean girls, mean boys, her various imperfections and insecurities, BBQ — but it’s the music that’s undergone a drastic transformation. Working with Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, she’s crafted a collection of songs that are delightfully raw, rambunctious and ragged. It’s very much a portrait of a pop princess growing beyond her boundaries, and Nash isn’t too worried about who she alienates because of it. “I think it’s good when people slag you off a bit. … I feel like I’m sort of a bit like Marmite , like, people either really love my stuff or they really hate it,” she laughed. “And I never want to be bland … so this is just sort of the record I wanted to make. It was really how I wanted to express myself and what I was listening to — a lot of riot grrrl, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney and also, like, ’60s girl groups like the Supremes and the Shirelles.” And all those influences — and a whole lot more — are readily apparent on Best Friend. Whether it’s the first single “Do-Wah-Doo,” the media-baiting “I’ve Got A Secret” (which hints at a lesbian encounter and thumbs its nose at “uneducated people,” according to Nash,) the snarling, strutting “I Just Love You More,” or even album-closing ballad “I Hate Seagulls,” Nash proudly and loudly displays her allegiances. But for all the sounds she packed on the album, perhaps the most stunning moment features nothing more that her voice — it’s the spoken intro to “Mansion Song,” a raw, profane rant against rock-and-rollers and the girls who love them (sample line: “I fancy the hip, rock-and-roll scenester/ I wanna be f—ed and then rolled over, ’cause I’m an independent woman of the 21st century”) that not only shocks, but hints that Nash has a whole lot more to say — and she’ll be saying it for a long time to come. “Well, it’s a reflection on groupie culture, and these young girls selling themselves short and using sex as a way to empower themselves — I don’t know what they’re searching for; they must be feeling insecure to allow these men to disrespect them like that,” she said. “And then at festivals you see them and everyone thinks, ‘Oh, they’re a slag,’ or, ‘Oh, they’re dumb,’ and I think that’s sad, because there is a brain in there and there probably is someone who can do something really interesting and have an opinion and be smart and funny, but that’s the only way the world sees them … or something like that.” Are you excited for Kate Nash’s new album? Guru’s Sister ‘Never Had The Right Feeling’ About Solar

‘My brother decided to trust him with his life, and we see where that ended up,’ Patricia Elam tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier in 1994 Photo: Chi Modu/ diverseimages/ Getty Images Patricia Elam , older sister of late Gang Starr MC Keith “Guru” Elam , said she always thought her brother’s friend Solar was suspect. She said she never trusted him and, therefore, was never on good terms with the producer. “When [Guru] started working with Solar, even up until the time he was in the hospital and we learned Solar was the health care proxy, my father and my [older] brother were still sort of like, ‘This is what your brother wanted. We’re kinda gonna go along with it,’ ” Patricia recalled. “They were pretty trusting of Solar. [Solar] was feeding them the information he wanted them to have. I was always hesitant and a little more cynical. I never had the right feeling about him. I think he knew that.” Solar has said in the past that if there was any rift between himself and the Elam family , it was with Patricia and her son Justin, because they went public with the news that Guru was ill. Solar said that Guru and Patricia had been estranged for years. “When you ask me why he blames me, he’s a perceptive guy, and he knows if someone is with him or not,” Patricia explained. “I never was with [Solar] for various reason over the years. But now that my father and brother both see where this had gone, they are like, ‘You were right.’ They can’t get over it that someone would even behave in this manner. It’s been a learning experience.” Patricia admitted that Solar had a heavy influence over her brother, and she’s perplexed over their relationship to this day. “I don’t know what the influence was,” she said. “I don’t know if it was drugs, brainwashing, whatever. I don’t know if it was blackmail. For whatever reason, my brother decided to trust him with his life, and we see where that ended up. It’s an American tragedy, as far as I’m concerned.” Patricia revealed that the last time she talked to her brother was at the beginning of the year about three weeks before he went into the hospital for his terminal myeloma, and they talked about their family. The last time she saw him alive was mid-February, when he was in the hospital in a coma. She said when Guru was initially admitted, Solar told the family to not come and that the MC didn’t want anybody to see him in his weakened condition. But when he slipped into a coma, they all went. “When I went in there, I was so shocked at what he looked like,” she said, when asked if she saw any signs of neglect. “I didn’t pay attention to a bunch of fine details. I did notice his hair. He always shaved his head. It was odd to see [hair] grown around the edges. I didn’t get the feeling of he wasn’t being taken care of. I didn’t look at his nails, that kind of thing. I looked at how frail he was, how skeleton-like his head looked, how swollen his hands and feet were. I was shocked at his overall appearance.” Guru died April 19, succumbing to cancer. He has since been cremated, and a private memorial for the family is being planned with possibly a larger ceremony for his fans this summer on Guru’s birthday, July 17. Another point of contention for Patricia is the farewell letter Solar released , which he said Guru wrote. Patricia thinks the letter is a fake. “Oh, God, my brother never regained consciousness,” Patricia said. “Understand this: He never regained consciousness from the time he went into a coma in freaking mid-February until he died. You tell me how someone writes a letter in that state. He tells my son when he got there, ‘He’s gonna look like he was in a coma.’ No, he was in a coma. When [Guru] went into the hospital, he wasn’t thinking he was gonna die; he was thinking he would get better. But if he did think he was gonna die, and he was on his deathbed because his son was so important to him, he would have been writing a letter to his son. He wouldn’t have wrote a letter about ‘Oh, my freaking career and this that and the other, and this person is in charge of my life.’ No. That letter was so self-serving. I’m happy to see that most people say when they read it, ‘It doesn’t even sound like him.’ That’s not how my brother wrote. That’s not how my brother talked. “If he was writing a letter on his deathbed, it would have been to his son, [to] my father, that kind of thing,” she added. “Or it would have been about wishes he has for his son, [how] he hopes he left a positive legacy. That’s the kind of thing he would have written.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Rick Ross Calls Teflon Don Jay-Z Collabo ‘An Atomic Bomb’

The Bawse denies rumors that the new Jay duet is ‘Maybach Music 3.’ By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Swizz Beatz-designed Christian Louboutin white shoes, a black motorcycle jacket specially made by Fubu and a white tank top you could find at any swap meet or flea market — Rick Ross had his swagger up on the set of his F. Gary Gray-directed video for “Super High.” The clip plays off the film “Easy Rider” and finds the Miami native scooping up sexy Stacey Dash like ice cream from Cold Stone. Ross woos her from her biker beau. During some downtime on the set, Ross explained that he’s trying to keep a lot of the ins and outs of his June 29 LP Teflon Don on lock until it drops, but the Bawse did disclose more about his collaboration with Jay-Z. “The majority of the details of the album I’ve been trying to keep under wraps so the fans can savor the music that much more,” Ross said. “I most definitely have confirmed Jay-Z being on the album. [The song] is like an atomic bomb. I’m just waiting to push the button. Shout-out to Roc Nation. Shout-out to Kanye West.” Ross said he and Jay recorded the song in Sin City as Jigga’s tour was coming to a close. “The funny thing is the way the record was done,” Ross said. “I followed him to a few Blueprint 3 Tour dates. I was chillin’ in the back, smoked out. As soon as he gets offstage, we was chillin’, vibing. His last date, which was in Vegas, he killed the show. We left the show, went to Tao for the afterparty. It was 30 bottles of Ace of Spades [champagne]. He left there, went and killed the craps table, the poker table. Then we got in the studio, and he laced me. It was the most phenomenal verse. “It’s not ‘Maybach Music 3,’ ” Ross revealed. “You could kill the rumors. This is something totally unexpected, and we talking that talk. I’m just excited, man. I’m expecting big things from this Teflon Don project.” Are you excited to hear new music from Rick Ross? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

‘Glee’ Stars Get Help From Madonna, But What About Adam Lambert?

‘I’ve only heard rumors,’ Chris Colfer says of a possible Lambert appearance. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino The cast of “Glee” in the “Power of Madonna” episode Photo: FOX In the “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee” set to air on Tuesday night (April 20), fans will get more than just remixes of favorite pop tunes. The Material Girl herself praised how Mr. Schuester will use her songs to teach his students a little more about themselves, and possibly change the way they interact with each other. Jenna Ushkowitz said that her character Tina will use Madge’s girl-power pop to clear up her relationship with pal and love interest Artie Abrams (played by Kevin McHale). “Well, definitely in the Madonna episode you’ll see [Tina and Artie] interact more, and it’s all about women’s empowerment,” she explained to MTV News at the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. on Saturday. “And how the boys are degrading and disrespectful. Tina will come back and fight back pretty hard, and then the writers have graciously given us the chance to live out our relationship for a while.” Chris Colfer (who plays Kurt Hummel on the show) didn’t shed too much light on the Madonna episode, but did weigh in on the rumors that Adam Lambert may bring his glam-rock voice and style to the show. “He’s a sweetheart,” he said. “I’ve only heard rumors, but I’ve never heard anything discussed with the writers or any of that.” But Colfer was able to speculate a bit on what’s next for his openly gay character. “There’s lots of good Kurt and Burt [Kurt’s father] story lines coming up, and I think next season he’s getting a love interest, so that should be interesting, I believe,” he said. “They don’t tell me anything, but I believe he’ll be a student — but that’s all I really know.” Do you think Adam Lambert should stop by “Glee?” Tell us in the comments! Jonas Brothers Tease Future Albums, Solo Plans

‘I think it would be cool!’ Kevin Jonas says about making his own album after Nick and Joe’s side projects. By Jocelyn Vena The Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News The Jonas Brothers aren’t shy about branching out from their sibling trio. Earlier this year, Nick released an album with his side project, Nick Jonas and the Administration . And after teasing that he was working on some solo music , Joe, along with Demi Lovato, released the song “Make a Wave” from the “Oceans” soundtrack. So does that mean Kevin is the next JoBro to go it alone? “I don’t know about that. Possibly,” he told MTV News at Family Day , an annual charity event that raises money for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. “I think it would be cool.” But that doesn’t mean the brothers are going their separate ways. Kevin reiterated what Nick told us back in January: “As the Jonas Brothers, we are continuing to make music.” So even if a Kevin solo album doesn’t happen, the guys say they have plenty of new music catalogued for whatever they end up wanting to do next. “We all have been working on lots of music, and … it could really be for anything,” Joe added. “It could be for other artists or it can be for ourselves. … It’s all up in the air. We just love making music, so we just want to be in the studio all the time. “We’ve been in the other room talking about [when we might release the next Jonas Brothers album],” he continued. “For us, we have a big year planned out, [and] that’s definitely in the works. For us, we have a lot of music coming up [for the “Camp Rock 2” soundtrack and the “JONAS” soundtrack]. That in itself is two different records.” As for those albums, and any future JB albums, Nick said the musical style they go with next is something they will be incredibly proud to release. “It’s all music we love, and we’re looking forward to playing,” he said. “[We’re] trying to figure out which fits us best, and then we’ll go in that direction.” What do you want to see the Jonas Brothers do next musically? Adam Lambert Picks His ‘American Idol’ Favorites, Plans Another Visit

‘I hope to come back for the finale,’ he tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Adam Lambert Photo: Dr. Billy Ingram/WireImage After spending a week as a guest mentor on “American Idol,” Adam Lambert learned a few things about this year’s crop of contestants. First and foremost, he wasn’t all that shocked to see Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia get the boot after the pair turned in “sleepy” performances. “You know, I think at this point in the competition, it comes down to ‘Do you want to be there, or do you not want to be there?’ ” Lambert told MTV News on the red carpet of the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles. “You’ve got to step it up, get some caffeine going. They were a little sleepy.” Secondly, he already has a favorite to win the season-nine crown — or, more specifically, four favorites. He also thinks everyone should start packing lasers, like he did for his performance of “Whataya Want From Me” on “Idol.” “There’s some amazing voices this year. I think Crystal [Bowersox], Casey [James], Lee [Dewyze] and Michael [Lynche], for me, those four really stand out as authentic, pure, amazing vocals,” he said. “But everyone was really sweet and really friendly and really receptive. I had a great time mentoring, and I had a really good time putting on my laser show. I got lasers! I was so excited. I was like a little kid.” And since he had such a great time on the show, Lambert said he hopes he can make another appearance during the season-nine finale. He wanted to show up for this week’s “Idol Gives Back” event, but his schedule won’t allow it. “I hope to come back for the finale. Unfortunately, I’m going to be gone for ‘Idol Gives Back,’ ” he said. “I leave this Sunday. I’m going to be in Europe for three weeks, promoting my album. … It comes out in the U.K. at the end of the month, and I’m so excited to see how it does over there.” What do you think about Adam’s “Idol” assessment? ‘The Hills’ Stars Call Final Season ‘Bittersweet’

‘It’s sad! We’ve been together for so long,’ Audrina Patridge says of sixth and final season, debuting April 27. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Stephanie Pratt and Lo Bosworth Photo: MTV News In the just-debuted “Hills” trailer, fans got a sneak peek at all the highs and lows expected in the show’s final season , debuting April 27. While it might be a surprise to viewers that the show has decided to hang up its hat, the stars anticipated that, like all good things, this too would come to an end. “It’s sad! We’ve been together for so long,” Audrina Patridge told MTV News over the weekend. “I’m going to be 25 this year, so that’s been my life for the last five years. And it’s sad to let go of that, because it’s something that I’ve become so used to, and it’s so easy and natural. But at the same time, it’s nice to graduate, and I’m ready to move on and do the next big thing.” While Kristin Cavallari’s time on the show was considerably shorter than Patridge’s, the show’s new star said it still isn’t easy to say goodbye. “When I found out that this was the last season of ‘The Hills,’ I was kind of expecting it. I wasn’t expecting it before the season actually premiered, though,” she said. “It’s bittersweet. I think it’s kind of time, and everyone’s ready to move on and do other things, but it’s … going to be sad.” Like Cavallari, Lo Bosworth appeared on both “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills” and says that seeing the show come to an end is a bit of a strange experience. “We were, I think, anticipating it was going to come to an end, but it’s sort of surreal, ’cause this has been our lives,” she said. “And to have that change is sort of scary, but we’re all really excited.” Stephanie Pratt thinks now is a good time to end the show, since everyone’s lives are a lot more settled now than when the show started in May 2006. “I called Lo right after I heard just to see if she knew. … I pretty much figured it was the last season,” she said. “We all have really grown up, and we really don’t go to nightclubs every night anymore. We’re just, like, more mature. I mean, we still fight with each other, but it’s the sixth season. I’ve never known a reality show to go as far as ‘The Hills.’ ” What was your reaction when you found out “The Hills” was ending?
