‘Thor’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are applauding the God of Thunder’s big-screen debut. By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in “Thor” Photo: Paramount Pictures The golden-locked God of Thunder has finally descended upon theaters. “Thor,” starring brawny Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth, tells the tale of a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. As a result, his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), banishes Thor to Earth, where he meets humans Jane (Natalie Portman), Darcy (Kat Dennings) and Dr. Eric Selvig (Stellan Skarsg

‘Thor’ Has ‘A Real Sense Of Humor,’ Chris Hemsworth Says

One of the first big movies to open this season will be the highly anticipated “Thor,” directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsg

‘Thor’ Director Kenneth Branagh Dishes Plot Details After Trailer Drops

‘The story involves a clash with an ice planet and the frost giants who live therein,’ Branagh explains. By Eric Ditzian “Thor” trailer Photo: Paramount Pictures The latest “Thor” trailer spends far less time exploring the fantastical world of Asgard than it does delving into the mighty warrior’s Earth-based, conspiracy-filled, fish-out-of-water story. That’s hardly surprising. Even given the film’s Marvel badge-o-cool, a film that spans the unknown universe, touching on American scientists and mythical frosty villains, can come off a little hokey — more “Masters of the Universe” than previous Marvel blockbusters like “Iron Man.” Thus the new trailer hits on Thor’s humorous side, his ass-kicking abilities and the enemies he’ll face after being banished from his planet to our world. Precious little from Asgard can be found. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Kenneth Branagh discussed several villains that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will face. “The story involves a clash with an ice planet and the frost giants who live therein,” he said. “They — as might be suggested by the name — are enormous creatures of incredible power who have been robbed of their power and glory by Odin, Thor’s father. What fuels a lot of this intense battle is revenge. This is an angry race, trying to get back at Thor and the Asgardians, the self-proclaimed guardians of the universe.” The new footage also features several looks at the Destroyer, a metallic, fire-shooting machine that will provide a serious challenge for Thor. “This series of metal bands form a giant, walking beast and open to reveal terrifying firepower,” Branagh explained. “In the right hands, this incredibly powerful device — awesome in its killing quality — is potentially a creature of extraordinary protective powers. In the wrong hands, it is a nightmare.” Co-starring Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Anthony Hopkins, “Thor” hits theaters in 3-D on May 6, 2011. Humor! Action! Kat Dennings! Now THIS is a Thor Trailer!

Can we all agree that the Thor marketing materials thus far have been a little less than thrilling? Good. Because now we really have something to look forward to from the Kenneth Branagh-directed Marvel actioner — an epic-scale tent pole set on two worlds with a sense of humor about itself, lots of swirling, hammer-smashing action, fantastical villains and creatures to ogle, and the acknowledged fetishizing of Chris Hemsworth’s abs.

How Did Kenneth Branagh Get ‘Thor’ Job? Marvel Chief Explains

‘He chased it pretty hard,’ Kevin Feige tells MTV News at Comic-Con. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Hemsworth in “Thor” Photo: Paramount Pictures When Marvel Studios announced it was making a live-action movie about its god of thunder, “Thor,” fans of the comic books were mostly excited. But when the studio revealed its choice of director, seasoned Shakespearian thespian Kenneth Branagh, the reactions were surprised, and decidedly mixed. Now that the trailer is out and the cast and crew have made the rounds at San Diego Comic-Con, however, it seems the buzz is mostly positive for Branagh. When MTV News caught up with Marvel chief Kevin Feige during our live-stream show at Comic-Con, he revealed how Branagh landed the gig. “He chased it pretty hard,” Feige said. “We had a number of good meetings. He flew himself over to meet with me. We had a number of phone calls, a number of sessions — more meetings than I’ve ever had with a director before we’d brought them on.” Feige added that through those first meetings with Branagh, he quickly learned that the actor had a lot more invested in the character than Feige originally realized. “He’s a big, giant ‘Thor’ fan,” Feige said. “He clearly is a very literate guy when it comes to Shakespeare, and when it comes to almost anything, including Marvel’s ‘Thor,’ which was a surprise to us. “Also, just talking about movies,” he continued. “We love the same kind of movies, we love the same kind of things, and when you have someone who’s as talented as Ken is in one arena and bring him into another one, he is going to succeed.” Feige went on to say that Marvel was fully behind Branagh in every step of his filmmaking process. “We have the department heads, we have the great resources to help him,” he said. “What he brings to us is bringing our characters to life in a big way.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

The 8 Most Awkward Comments From ET’s Thor Set Visit

There’s still nearly a year to go before Paramount and Marvel drop Thor in theaters, but considering how this is officially Awkward Video Week at Movieline, it’s worth having a look at Entertainment Tonight ‘s recent, appropriately cringe-y visit to the film’s New Mexico set. Virtually all the principals (director Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins) are on view here, but it’s what they have to say in those tense, turbulent moments that yields the finest rewards. They’re even more fun stripped of context, though the video follows as well. Happy squirming!

Anthony Hopkins: The Movieline Interview

Anthony Hopkins may be a knighted, Oscar-winning movie star with over 50 years of acting experience, but in conversation, he’s disarmingly down-to-earth. When he called up Movieline last week to chat about his new film, James Ivory’s The City of Your Final Destination , there were no publicist go-betweens or assistants rolling the call — just a ring from an unknown number, and that familiar voice warmly saying, “This is Tony Hopkins.” You get the feeling that in his later life, Hopkins has no patience for Hollywood artifice, and it’s a mien that makes him well suited to play Destination’s Adam Gund, who’s convinced that his ex-pat life in Uruguay is so casual and relaxed that his younger lover (Hiroyuki Sanada) will surely leave him at some point for something more exciting. As Hopkins prepared to wrap his role on Marvel’s megabudgeted Thor , he took the time to discuss his work on Ivory’s film while extinguishing one rumor (that there’s been friction between him and his Thor costar Chris Hemsworth) and fanning the flames of another (that his next film with Woody Allen is headed for a Cannes berth).
