Gates Foundation invests in Monsanto/ Both will profit at expense of small-scale African farmers

Farmers and civil society organizations around the world are outraged by the recent discovery of further connections between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and agribusiness titan Monsanto. Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form). “The Foundation’s direct investment in Monsanto is problematic on two primary levels,” said Dr. Phil Bereano, University of Washington Professor Emeritus and recognized expert on genetic engineering. “First, Monsanto has a history of blatant disregard for the interests and well-being of small farmers around the world, as well as an appalling environmental track record. The strong connections to Monsanto cast serious doubt on the Foundation’s heavy funding of agricultural development in Africa and purported goal of alleviating poverty and hunger among small-scale farmers. Second, this investment represents an enormous conflict of interests.” Monsanto has already negatively impacted agriculture in African countries. For example, in South Africa in 2009, Monsanto’s genetically modified maize failed to produce kernels and hundreds of farmers were devastated. According to Mariam Mayet, environmental attorney and director of the Africa Centre for Biosafety in Johannesburg, some farmers suffered up to an 80% crop failure. While Monsanto compensated the large-scale farmers to whom it directly sold the faulty product, it gave nothing to the small-scale farmers to whom it had handed out free sachets of seeds. “When the economic power of Gates is coupled with the irresponsibility of Monsanto, the outlook for African smallholders is not very promising,” said Mayet. Monsanto’s aggressive patenting practices have also monopolized control over seed in ways that deny farmers control over their own harvest, going so far as to sue—and bankrupt—farmers for “patent infringement.” News of the Foundation’s recent Monsanto investment has confirmed the misgivings of many farmers and sustainable agriculture advocates in Africa, among them the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, who commented, “We have long suspected that the founders of AGRA—the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—had a long and more intimate affair with Monsanto.” Indeed, according to Travis English, researcher with AGRA Watch, “The Foundation’s ownership of Monsanto stock is emblematic of a deeper, more long-standing involvement with the corporation, particularly in Africa.” In 2008, AGRA Watch, a project of the Seattle-based organization Community Alliance for Global Justice, uncovered many linkages between the Foundation’s grantees and Monsanto. For example, some grantees (in particular about 70% of grantees in Kenya) of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)—considered by the Foundation to be its “African face”—work directly with Monsanto on agricultural development projects. Other prominent links include high-level Foundation staff members who were once senior officials for Monsanto, such as Rob Horsch, formerly Monsanto Vice President of International Development Partnerships and current Senior Program Officer of the Gates Agricultural Development Program. Transnational corporations like Monsanto have been key collaborators with the Foundation and AGRA’s grantees in promoting the spread of industrial agriculture on the continent. This model of production relies on expensive inputs such as chemical fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and herbicides. Though this package represents enticing market development opportunities for the private sector, many civil society organizations contend it will lead to further displacement of farmers from the land, an actual increase in hunger, and migration to already swollen cities unable to provide employment opportunities. In the words of a representative from the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, “AGRA is poison for our farming systems and livelihoods. Under the philanthropic banner of greening agriculture, AGRA will eventually eat away what little is left of sustainable small-scale farming in Africa.” A 2008 report initiated by the World Bank and the UN, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), promotes alternative solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty that emphasize their social and economic roots. The IAASTD concluded that small-scale agroecological farming is more suitable for the third world than the industrial agricultural model favored by Gates and Monsanto. In a summary of the key findings of IAASTD, the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) emphasizes the report’s warning that “continued reliance on simplistic technological fixes—including transgenic crops—will not reduce persistent hunger and poverty and could exacerbate environmental problems and worsen social inequity.” Furthermore, PANNA explains, “The Assessment’s 21 key findings suggest that small-scale agroecological farming may offer one of the best means to feed the hungry while protecting the planet.” The Gates Foundation has been challenged in the past for its questionable investments; in 2007, the L.A. Times exposed the Foundation for investing in its own grantees and for its “holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.” The Times chastised the Foundation for what it called “blind-eye investing,” with at least 41% of its assets invested in “companies that countered the foundation’s charitable goals or socially-concerned philosophy.” cont. added by: JanforGore

Photographer Discovers Mysterious "Bearded" Antelope

Photo by Paolo Torchio Veteran wildlife photographer , Paolo Torchio, made an interesting discovery while visiting Kenya’s Msai Mara National Reserve: a mysterious “bearded” antelope. Torchio has lived and worked in Kenya for two decades and is intimately familiar the beasts that occupy the 600-square-mile reserve. He initially thought the animal was a dog and “was wondering, what is this dog doing?” he said. “And when it came out from the grass, that was a surprise.” … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bin Laden had ‘no clue’ about Sept. 11 retaliation

Osama bin Laden had no idea the U.S. would hit al-Qaida as hard as it has since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, a former bin Laden associate tells WTOP in an exclusive interview. “I'm 100 percent sure they had no clue about what was going to happen,” says Noman Benotman, who was head of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group in the summer of 2000. “What happened after the 11th of September was beyond their imagination, ” says Benotman, who adds that al-Qaida thought the U.S. was a “paper tiger.” Sitting on the floor at bin Laden's compound in Kandahar, Afghanistan during a meeting the summer before the attacks, Benotman shocked bin Laden and more than 200 other international jihadist leaders by telling the al-Qaida leader his jihadi strategy was “a total failure.” Benotman, a highly regarded associate of bin Laden's at the time, says he surprised him again by rebuffing a plea for help. “He asked for my help. Bin Laden asked me personally, you know. I responded immediately on the spot …'No. I'm not going to help you.'” Bin Laden was stunned. “Because he used to like to sit next to me, you know. My right hand side,” Benotman says. The seating location meant he was someone bin Laden respected. Benotman says he spoke frankly because his reputation allowed him to. “I've spent time in the front line engaging with the enemy more than bin Laden and [Ayman Al-]Zawahiri and the entire group of al-Qaida.” Zawahiri laughed when he warned those at the 2000 meeting that the U.S. response would be swift, hard and long, Benotman says. Benotman attributes al-Qaida's overconfident attitude to the United States' response to al-Qaida attacks on its in embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1998. Zawahiri, according to Benotman, expected only a missile attack. “When they attacked the embassies in East Africa, they estimated the U.S. launched 75 cruise missiles and eight people got killed. So they said this time, maybe they will launch 200 and they laughed about this.” Benotman's assessment is backed up by a former Central Intelligence Agency officer, who was active in the fight against al-Qaida. The officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, says “several captured terrorists have said publicly that al-Qaida never expected the towers to fall. Their goal was to frighten people and impact the U.S. economy, so they really didn't plan for the massive response the U.S. launched.” Bin Laden got more than one warning, says Benotman. “I told him several times before the Sept. 11th attacks that if you do this, the U.S. is going to retaliate in a very harsh way. At least twice I reminded him about the serious orders he was given by Mullah Omar, the leader of the Afghan Taliban to stop fighting the U.S., and he disobeyed the order.” Now living in London and openly campaigning against organizations like al-Qaida, Benotman – according to some – is simply trying to avoid going to jail in his native Libya. “I would like to believe that bin Laden was shocked and dismayed by what we did after 9/11, but I come hard up against an awful lot of evidence that that's exactly what he wanted,” says Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit. Scheuer questions whether Benotman is speaking out freely. “Clearly, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi is holding a hammer over his head,” Scheuer says, noting some of Benotman's ex-LIFG colleagues are in prison and Benotman still has relatives in Libya. Benotman, who still believes in the commitment Jihad requires, laughs at the notion he's afraid of being arrested. “I'm not afraid of the Americans or any other country. My speaking out is a conscious decision and it's based on my entire experience and understanding of jihadism.” Not only does Benotman reject al-Qaida's ideology, but he says “killing civilians is a crime. I don't care if it's Jews, Christians, Muslims or anyone. It's a crime and we shouldn't help them (al Qaida).” added by: onemalefla

World Water Day: Make Your Voice Heard!

World Water Day will be held on March 22. To mark the date, the Pulitzer Center is teaming up with the writers’ site Helium and some of the world’s most influential water advocates and NGOs to present a World Water Day writing contest. We want to hear your voices on the world’s greatest public health crisis: Inaccessibility to safe water. Some 1.1 billion people lack reliable access to safe water that is free from disease and industrial waste. And 2.6 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. Approximately 4,500 people die everyday from waterborne diseases – more than from HIV-AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. These are among the issues addressed in Downstream, the Pulitzer Center’s interactive web portal dedicated to global water issues. To learn more about these water-related issues, you can also view Water Wars here on Current. Produced by the Common Language Project in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center, Water Wars are multimedia reports that focus on water scarcity and climate change in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. Now, the Pulitzer Center is seeking to spur public debate by asking: Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation claims 4,500 lives a day. What should we do about it? This is an opportunity to have your ideas – and solutions! – showcased to thousands of readers. To submit your essay visit the Pulitzer Center website. All entries will be shown on the Helium and Pulitzer Center sites. The winner, selected from the 10 entries judged best by the Helium community, will receive a Pulitzer Center Citizen Journalist Award. The deadline for the World Water Day Writing Contest is Wednesday March 31. The Pulitzer Center Citizen Journalist Award for this contest will be announced on Friday April 9. added by: PulitzerCenter

New Apostolic Reformation, Sarah Palin, and the Prayer Warriors who are waging a spiritual war on America.

NAR’s (New Apostolic Reformation) videos, according to researcher Rachel Tabachnick, “demonstrate the taking control of communities and nations through large networks of ‘prayer warriors’ whose spiritual warfare is used to expel and destroy the demons that cause societal ills. Once the territorial demons, witches, and generational curses are removed, the ‘born-again’ Christians in the videos take control of society.” The movement’s notion of “spiritual warfare” has spread from the California suburbs to an East-Coast inner city, and has impacted policy decisions in the developing world. Movement operatives are well-connected enough to have testified before Congress and to have received millions of dollars in government abstinence-only sex-education grants, and bizarre enough to maintain that in its prototype communities, the movement has healed AIDS, purified polluted streams and even grown huge vegetables. Leaders in the NAR movement refer to themselves as “apostles.” In the days leading up to the historic vote on health-care reform in the Senate, Apostle Lou Engle led the Family Research Council’s “Prayercast” against health-care reform, a Webcast featuring Republican Senators Jim DeMint (S.C.) and Sam Brownback (Kans.), and Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.). Earlier in the year, Engle, who leads the group TheCall, prayed over Newt Gingrich at a Virginia event called Rediscovering God in America. In 2008, Engle, at an event he staged at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, advocated acts of Christian martyrdom to end abortion and same-sex marriage. This “apostle” claims LGBT people are possessed by demons. And Engle is not the only NAR apostle with political connections. Presidential campaign watchers got their first taste of the New Apostolic Reformation when it was revealed that Sarah Palin, while mayor of Wasilla, had been prayed over in a laying-on-of-hands by Rev. Thomas Muthee of Kenya, director of the NAR East Africa Spiritual Warfare Network, in a ceremony designed to protect Palin from witches and demons. Muthee, it turns out, is famous in his native land for driving out of town a woman he deemed a witch, a charge that had her neighbors calling for her stoning. Palin, according to Alaskan Apostle Mary Glazier, became part of her prayer network at the age of 24. Wasilla is no stranger to wandering NAR leaders. Last June, Apostle Lance Wallnau stopped through in the course of his world travels, promoting the movement’s Reclaiming the Seven Mountains of Culture campaign at Wasilla Alaska Assembly of God Church — the very church at which Muthee laid hands on Palin. (The “seven mountains” are the realms of business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family and religion.) Other NAR luminaries dropping by Wasilla last year include leading international Apostles Naomi Dowdy and Dutch Sheets. Sarah Palin’s threat to our country is not due to her burgeoning intellect, oratory skills, or leadership ability. It is that she is malleable enough, and with enough natural charisma, to be a perfect figurehead for marginalized groups to use in an effort to further their agenda. Because of this chameleon like ability to reflect the philosophy’s of these disaffected Americans she has been supported by groups as politically disparate as the AIP , the Republican party, and the Teabaggers. However Palin’s connection to the Evangelical movement since the day she was baptized in Little Beaver Lake has been the one connection that has not been just for show or to further her ambitions. In fact it may be the catalyst behind Sarah’s political aspirations and desire to front a powerful political movement. While many see Sarah’s naked ambitions as fulfilling an emptiness inside of her, I think that she is actually completely convinced that she is a vessel through which God is working to bring this nation closer to Him. In other words Sarah believes she has already filled that emptiness with her faith, and is now willing to do anything to fulfill what she sees as her destiny. (Of course those of us carefully observing Palin realize that she is only barely holding things together and that the emptiness within is in danger of consuming her in the not too distant future.) Palin’s ability to attract these angry frustrated people makes her especially dangerous. She demonstrated that threat while on the campaign trail with McCain. She was able to plant a few conspiratorial seeds about Barack Obama back then that have matured into fully realized and well established conspiracy theories. Sarah’s wider influence has diminished greatly, but it has only hardened among a certain population. Every time anybody, myself included, dare to make a joke or reveal some flaw about Sarah Palin the attacks come fast and furious. She plays the victim and they rise to protect her, from the talking heads at Fox News, to political pundits like Pat Buchanan, to Palin supporting bloggers, they receive their marching orders and they charge into battle on her behalf. But while many of them (especially Fox News) believe they are using her to further their agenda, she is also using them to further hers.
