‘Scandal’ Recap: Olivia Pope Blows The Lid Off B613

Source: Bob D’Amico / Getty There are only two episodes of Scandal left. EEEEEEK! All the creative minds over at Shondaland are working overtime to work our nerves! We start with Mellie facing her interrogation about whether she ordered Cyrus Beene’s “assassination” and Olivia is right by her side. Olivia tells her that the best thing she can do is tell the truth because it’s her armor. You remember that revelation she made during her time working with Annalise Keating, right? Now we’re at Mellie’s deposition and Olivia is by her side and then they get hit with the bombshell. They have footage of Mellie and Olivia discussing how to “handle” President Rashad. Basically, the story is that Cyrus “found out” about Rashad’s assassination, disapproved, and Mellie’s solution was to kill Cyrus too. Mencken demands to know what Mellie has to say about that and she pleads the 5th. Then Olivia Pope gets hit with a subpoena. via GIPHY Now Olivia, Marcus, Mellie, Rosen, and Fitz are trying to figure out what to do. Olivia points out that they are definitely backed into a corner and there’s no real solution at the moment. Meanwhile, Mencken is doing the devil’s work, but there seems to be an oz of sense left. He makes it clear to Cyrus that he doesn’t trust Jake. Olivia comes home to find Jake in her living room. He hands her a vile of sand. It’s a “piece of their sun” from when they were frolicking on the beach in Tanzania, all happy and in love. Olivia denies his gift, but let’s cut to the chase. Jake wants Olivia to say that she killed Rashad at Mellie’s request. If she does so then she gets pardoned. Olivia tries to convince him not to do this and he tells her what we’ve long known, “If you starve a dog long enough, it will tear you to pieces.” No lies were detected. via GIPHY The gladiators plus Fitz, Mellie, and Rosen meet again, and it’s clear that they don’t know what to do for the first time ever. They can’t use Cyrus shady past against him because his crimes— including rigging Fitz’s election—would still blowback on all of them, especially Mallie. Now we’re at Olivia’s hearing and Mencken cuts to the chase. He asks her if she assassinated Rashad for Mellie and Olivia goes ovaries to the wall. She admits that she killed Rashad, but not at Mellie’s order. It was all about B613, which is run by Jake Ballard. Do you realize what just happened? Olivia blew the whistle on B613. She spills all the tea about the deep state intelligence agency that controls the White House. Everyone in the interrogation room and Jake, who was spying from B613’s hideout, as usual, was shocked. They looked like: via GIPHY Even the people on Olivia’s side want the know wtf! Olivia feels like it’s the only way they can win, but just when she gets a one up, Jake gets the best of her. He made sure to wipe all the evidence clean so that Mencken’s investigators turn up nothing.Jake then tells Mencken that he needs to make Olivia Pope’s testimony disappear and that the gut feeling he has in his stomach that something isn’t right is right, but he should just walk away if he knows what’s good for him. Mencken decides to do as he is told and buries Olivia’s testimony, which means the gladiators are back at square one. Mellie is freaking out because this still falls back on her. Olivia is convinced that Mellie has to tell the truth. They all do. Olivia sums it up well when she says that they are the villains of this story. They’ve all done something shady and the lid is about to come off. When it blows, Olivia can’t protect their legacies so it’s time for them to stand before the world, admit their sins and hope that the next generation of leaders decides to be better than they were. Everyone, including the gladiators, thinks Liv is nuts for this and make another move. They want to convince Mencken to do the right thing. Quinn visits Sally Langston to tell her about B613, but Sally Langston won’t bite without proof (there is no proof because B613 is obviously that good). Obviously, Sally’s curiosity is going to get the best of her because that’s who she is. Meanwhile, Papa Pope is playing with bones, doing his paleontologist thing and Jake strolls in to apologize for dragging Olivia into this. Rowan then reads Jake for filth. He tells him that if he were really at the top then he wouldn’t be there seeking validation from Papa Bear. Rowan then says that he is the definition of power and that Jake and Olivia were foolish to think they could take command. Jake pulls out a gun and points it at him but doesn’t shoot because Rowan is right. He still owns him. Rowan tells Jake that he will be there for him when he falls and Jake storms out. Finally, Abby, Quinn and Huck are confident that Olivia is the old Liv again because she’s willing to go down to make things right. That’s when they decide that they will be witnesses to testify about the existence of B613. Olivia doesn’t want them to do this because she wants to protect them from the consequences, but they declare that they want to be by her side as she drives over that cliff. Next Olivia tells Mellie that she’ll lie and say that Mellie had no knowledge of B613 if that’s what she wants, but Mellie is down to ride with her too. #TeamMellivia for the win! Sally Langston for the win too! She took the bait like we knew she would! via GIPHY The episode concludes with Miss Langston giving one of her epic commentaries about the courage of some brave individuals who have provided proof that the country has been run by a spy organization for the last 34 years. She makes it clear that “these are the traitors who have tried to take down Air Force 1 and drag down Mellie Grant.” She also drops Mencken’s name as a co-conspirator as she encourages her batshit viewers to take back their country. Jake and Cyrus look at each other like: via GIPHY There’s only one episode left. See you next week. A “Lil Positivity”: Man Without Arms Or Legs Is Set To Climb 20,000 Ft. Up Mount Kilimanjaro

Here’s a lil Friday morning inspiration: A congenital birth defect left 25-year-old Kyle Maynard a quadruple amputee, but that won’t stop him from braving one of the toughest physical tests a person can face — the nearly 20,000 foot climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. Though Maynard’s arms end at his elbows and his legs stop at his knees, he will use no assistive device to climb the highest peak in Africa. He’ll make the climb using only pieces of bicycle tire taped to the ends of his limbs with heavy duty tape. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for years, just because of the level of the challenge. The harder something is, the better the experience tends to be on the other end once you get through it,” Maynard told ABCnews.com. Maynard has traveled the world as a motivational speaker, competed as a mixed martial artist and a wrestler and owns his own cross fit gym in Suwanee, Ga., but he says that Kilimanjaro will be the hardest feat he’s ever tried. A main mission behind the climb will be to “send a message” to veterans who have been disabled and to disabled children around the world “to show that there are challenges in life, but it doesn’t mean that you have to give up. You decide how you’re going to draw meaning from the challenges in your life.” The climbing team for “Mission Kilimanjaro 2012″ will consist of both “able-bodied” and “disabled” civilians and veterans who will set out on an approximately 16-day ascent in January. Before the climb they will be visiting the Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind in Moshi, Tanzania, where they will deliver $25,000 worth of donated medical supplies to the school. Among the climbing team will be several veterans who live with physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder. Maynard explains that wounded veterans have made a “huge impact” on his life. He writes on the mission’s website: “I am climbing for the people who may realize how much potential they have in their lives. I am climbing to pay tribute to my heroes — the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have sacrificed so much to preserve my freedom.” Amazing. We wish him the best of luck. Source

Daily Kos Granny: We Deserve Many More 9/11s for Our Shabby Imperialism

Taking in the current furor over the tiny-church-of-Koran-bonfires story, The Washington Post front page today strangely suggested “Debate may drown out quite 9/11 reflections,” with “post-attack unity lost.” Does anyone remember any 9/11 anniversaries after the first one that were all about “unity” and were free of partisanship? The blog Daily Kos was lobbing bombs at “right-wing white guys” Wednesday. In her praise of the new book-length rant “American Taliban” by top Kosmonaut Markos Moutlisas, “Hippie grandmother” Jane Stillwater pleaded, “Right-Wing white guys, it’s time for you to stop acting like General Custer.” You have no idea how lucky we are that this tactic of “bringing the war home” has not happened in America except only once so far. We have been just plain LUCKY so far — that Middle Easterners, Latin Americans, Africans and Asians haven’t dragged any more of Eisenhower’s or Johnson’s or Nixon’s or Reagan’s or Bush’s or Obama’s wars out of the streets of cities like Saigon, Mogadishu, Gaza, San Salvador, East Timor, Santiago, Shanghai, Baghdad, Tehran, Brazzaville, Port-au-Prince and Kabul and into the streets of our American cities. We have been very lucky that, so far, we have only suffered just one 9-11 — when you consider the many past decades of America’s habitual and continual shabby treatment of “Others” all over the world. You Right-Wingers may not care what happens to yourselves as a result of your constant agitation and hate, but please stop putting MY life in danger. “Just one 9/11” does seem to ignore the other terrorist attacks — World Trade Center I, the Khobar Towers, the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the USS Cole, Fort Hood, and so on — whose death counts weren’t as enormous. Conservatives are apparently itching for all of America to be incinerated by terrorist attacks with their “Aryan lynch mob mentality”: By creating all of these new categories of people to hate and categorizing over half of all Americans as belonging to “The Other,” Teabaggers and other right-wingers are in reality starting to put most of the rest of us “white guys” in danger. How’s that old joke go? When the Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by Indians, the Lone Ranger turns to Tonto and says, “What are we going to do now!” And Tonto replies, “What do you mean ‘we’, White Man?” In a demographically changing America, it doesn’t make any sense at all for America’s right-wing self-appointed “white men” to go around aggressively alienating their neighbors. How do you think that’s gonna play out a few years down the road when “The “Other” (including browns, blacks, gays, women, Jews, Muslims, Asians, poor people, etc.), those whom the right-wing white-man demographic seems to hate so much, is firmly in the majority? Not so good. Being a “White” person myself, I certainly don’t look forward to seeing over half of my country turning against me in the next several years. Just cut it out, right-wing white guys! You simply cannot afford to go around doing the Wounded Knee thing any more. Or the Amos ‘n’ Andy thing. Or the Tanforan or Manzanar thing. Or the Ground Zero Mosque thing either. Who was it that said, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”? Obviously it was no one whose example you appear to follow or respect. Further, the right-wing’s current Aryan lynch mob mentality is only effective when public opinion is on its side. And the tide of public opinion is turning — because, ultimately, no one likes nasty. Public opinion may be turning slowly — but it IS turning. And you guys are gonna get caught in the undertow. Don’t drag me down with you. Not only that, but this right-wing “White is Right” lynch-mob mentality isn’t just affecting us here stateside. There’s a whole “Other” world out there beyond our borders that is being effected as well. And while there are only three million of “us” here in America. there are over six billion of “Them” out there Beyond the Pale. So please stop wildly waving that red flag around, guys — because you have definitely attracted the attention of a whole stampede of rather pissed-off bulls that are starting to charge right at you (and at me too!) You think that “Ground Zero” in New York was bad? You appear to be practically pleading to turn all of America into “Ground Zero” too. (Hat tip: Kathryn Street)

Jessica Biel, Kenna’s Treacherous Trek Featured In ‘Summit On The Summit’

MTV doc airing March 14 shows Emile Hirsch, Lupe Fiasco and others climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for clean-water awareness. By Gil Kaufman Jessica Biel and company are shown the quality of drinking water used in parts of Africa Photo: MTV The dramatic journey to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, to raise awareness about the global clean-water crisis will be documented in an MTV special titled “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro.” The 90-minute documentary, which will air at 9 p.m. ET on March 14, follows musicians Kenna, Santigold and Lupe Fiasco , actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas and a group of scientists and activists on their journey to the top of the highest peak in Africa as they learn about water issues and climb through snow, sleet, rain and treacherous terrain on their way to 19,340 feet. While the January climb was chronicled on SummitOnTheSummit.com through tweets, photos and video in real time, the documentary will provide never-before-seen footage and insight into the climb while spotlighting the urgency of water issues. “MTV has a long history of educating its audience to raise awareness on issues that are important to them,” Dave Sirulnick, MTV Multiplatform, News and Docs executive vice president, said in a statement. “More than 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. By airing this documentary, MTV hopes to mobilize a new generation of young people who may not be aware of this global cause to take action and get involved in helping find solutions to the water crisis.” Battling crippling altitude headaches, freezing temperatures, sore bodies and soaking wet clothes and boots, the group trekked their way up the mountain, pushing themselves and each other to make the summit. “When I was younger, my dad pointed out Kilimanjaro on a huge atlas. It stood in my mind as one of the wonders of the world,” said trip leader Kenna , who was determined to reach the summit on his second try. “This climb is dedicated to my father. As a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and lost his friends and family to water-borne diseases. A billion people in the world don’t have clean water. I had to do something about it. For me it’s personal. I could have been one of those kids. I needed to come up with something that would command attention. And the only thing I could think of that was that massive was climbing Kilimanjaro.” From a dramatic demonstration in a steamy Tanzanian village at the foot of the mountain, where the climbers watched first-hand as sludgy brown liquid was turned into drinkable water using the PUR water filtration system, to their bone-chilling final assault on the summit, the documentary traces the climbers’ dramatic path up the iconic mountain. In addition to raising awareness about water issues, the climb also raised funds for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Water for People’s PlayPumps Technology. “I know all of you want to be at the top of this mountain,” Kenna told the trekkers as they neared the summit and conditions got so treacherous that they were warned about their corneas possibly freezing. “But your safety comes first.” Reflecting on the journey, the Grammy-nominated musician said, “I think it’s honestly something more powerful than any of us could imagine.” Among the other participants on the climb are: Alexandra Cousteau (National Geographic Emerging Explorer and granddaughter of famed explorer and filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau), Elizabeth Gore (executive director for Global Partnerships for the United Nations Foundation), Simon Isaacs (international development and water expert), award-winning photographers Michael Muller and Jimmy Chin, Kick Kennedy (environmental activist and granddaughter of Robert Kennedy), Bernise Ang (social entrepreneur and recipient of the YouthActionNet Award and Fellowship from the International Youth Foundation), Dr. Greg Allgood (director of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program at Procter & Gamble), mountaineering expert Melissa Arnot and renowned trainer Jason Walsh.
