Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dream represent a multitude of values and principles to those who remember him. He was a peaceful uniter who stood up for the rights and liberties of African-Americans. And whether you focus on Dr. King’s message of non-violence or his efforts to bring social change, his legacy represents something good. Rappers are often painted with broad brush of negativity, so it may seem antithetical to state that MLK would be proud of any of today’s MCs. But if you take the following rappers into consideration, you may change your opinion. Lupe Fiasco “Stand up for freedom…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lupe is one of the few rappers today who is relevant and unafraid to address politics and social issues in his music. Even though Lupe Fiasco’s commentary can sometimes be received as controversial, he’s made music with substance. In addition, his ability to make commercially viable songs allows his songs with more depth reach a broader audience. In an era where it’s not common to merge hip-hop and politics, Lupe Fiasco isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes in, just as Dr. King did. The King Dream Chorus And Holiday Crew: Where Are They Now? Wale “We shall overcome…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Even though he’s from the mean streets of Washington, DC; the same city where Dr. King delivered his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech; Wale music doesn’t represent that life. He resisted the temptation to rap about the streets in order to acquire universal hood credibility, and the staying non-violent has worked well for him. The biggest hits of Wale’s career (“Lotus Flower Bomb” and “That Way”) are hip-hop love songs that have not diminished his credibility. Wale doesn’t rap about political or non-violent issues, but he overcame the effects of coming up in a harsh city. Martin Luther King Jr: “I Have A Dream” Speech [VIDEO] J. Cole “The content of [his] character…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There’s nothing controversial about J. Cole. He comes across a good dude who makes great music, while leaving the violence alone. J. Cole is a bright spot in today’s hip-hop, because he’s acclaimed by critics, respected by his peers, Grammy-nominated, and he makes hits. J. Cole deserves to be celebrated for his music, but also because he’s shown good character by channeling his energy into music instead of beef. 5 Things Martin Luther King Would Be Ashamed Of Jay-Z “The crooked places will be made straight…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jay-Z acquired fortune and fame by talking about his life as a drug dealer. But now he’s known for being one of the most important voices of this generation, and now, the proud father of Blue Ivy Carter. Jay-Z started off crooked and even engaged in battles with Nas and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy. However, Jay-Z has resolved his beefs and is now a respected artist and mogul living a straight life that includes him doing charitable work. Jay-Z hasn’t been perfect, but he’s proved that Dr. King was right when he stated that the crooked can go straight. How Gil Scott-Heron And Stevie Wonder Set Up Martin Luther King Day Diggy Simmons “All men are created equal…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diggy is an embodiment of Dr. King’s dream, in that he comes from a generation that is less color conscious than any previous generations. He’s aware of his Blackness, but doesn’t feel the need to appeal to any one race. Dr. King envisioned a world where people would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Diggy Simmons shows that this dream is already a reality for some.
Post-Conrad Murray trial projects include Fan Fest in Las Vegas, Bad reissue and Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Immortal’ soundtrack. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Michael Jackson has remained just as big a star in death as he was in life — if not bigger. Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and Tupac Shakur before him, interest in all things Jackson spiked following the singer’s death and continues to be strong two years after his shocking passing on June 25, 2009. Jackson’s name has been in the news on a daily basis over the past month thanks to the involuntary manslaughter trial of his former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray , who was found guilty , the jury announced Monday. It’s not the kind of publicity the Jackson estate is looking for, but with the trial now over, the focus will likely turn to the next projects from the singer’s vaults. To date, the estate has been busy lining up one project after another, beginning with 2009’s This Is It, the documentary on Jackson’s planned comeback tour that grossed close to $200 million worldwide on its way to becoming the #2 music documentary of all time. That was followed by the release of Michael , a posthumous album with unreleased Jackson tracks that sold more than 500,000 copies, alongside more than 1 million units of the This Is It soundtrack . There were also 3 million units shifted of the Ubisoft video game “Michael Jackson: The Experience,” which helped rack up the more than $1 billion the estate has brought in since Jackson’s death through a combination of music sales, film/TV revenue, music publishing, licensing and a $31 million recording contract with Sony. Cirque du Soleil’s traveling MJ extravaganza, “Immortal,” made its American debut this month, boasting a soundtrack that features a number of mash-ups and reimaginings of the singer’s music, plus some previously unheard bits. The show’s soundtrack is slated to hit stores November 21. When the show hits Las Vegas in December, it will coincide with the annual Michael Jackson Fan Fest (December 3-14), the ritual gathering of the flock that this year will include a raft of never-before-seen memorabilia from the King of Pop. Among the items at the first-ever estate-authorized fest at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino are the actual gates of Neverland Ranch, Jackson’s personal book collection, the 1999 Rolls Royce Seraph limousine with 24-karat gold embellishments designed by the singer, the 10-foot-tall HIStory statue, the spaceship set from the “Scream” video, the throne from the Egyptian-themed “Remember the Time” clip and the tank from the “Earth Song” live performance. Also reportedly due soon is a repackaging of Jackson’s 1987 Bad album, which, like previous reissues, is expected to feature previously unearthed bonus material. The original album featured landmark songs such as the title track, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Dirty Diana.” Given the amount of unreleased material that was reportedly left in the vaults at Jackson’s death, there is a strong possibility that another album of unheard tunes could be in the offing soon as well. Fans unlocked the November 21 album’s title on Facebook. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: WireImage Rihanna revealed the title of her November 21 album on Tuesday (October 4) with a little help from her fiercely loyal Navy. Her fans unlocked the new title on Facebook: Talk That Talk. The sassy name is certainly a tongue-in-cheek jab at any naysayers, critics and haters. The always swagged-out Rihanna has been using Facebook to tease fans with bits and pieces about her album, the follow-up to 2010’s Loud. So far, they’ve unlocked five pieces that have teased lyrics, looks and logos. For those playing at home, seven more remain. Before she officially released the album title, Rihanna emphatically denied one fan’s suggestion on Twitter to call the LP I’m Sexy and I Know It. “HELL NO,” she responded on the social-networking site. In late September, Rihanna dropped the album’s lead single, “We Found Love.” On the Calvin Harris-produced track, Rihanna proudly sings about the power of love. She shot a video for the single in Northern Ireland last month, even offending the farmer whose land she was using for the shoot. He felt that her “state of undress” during the shoot was “inappropriate.”] But Rihanna isn’t worried about other people’s perceptions of her art. In a recent interview with British Vogue, Rihanna said she is anything but a role model. “See, people … they want me to be a role model just because of the life I lead. The things I say in my songs, they expect it of me, and [being a role model] became more of my job than I wanted it to be. But no, I just want to make music. That’s it.” Plus, she’s very proud of her “We Found Love” video — skimpy costumes and all. “#WFLvid I really cant stop thinking about this video we just shot!” she tweeted at the time. “EASILY the BEST video I’ve done thus far!Definitely my fav 1,very powerful.” What are you expecting from Rihanna’s next album? ‘I refuse to remain stagnant,’ T.I. tells MTV News in Atlanta. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rahman Dukes T.I. Photo: MTV News This past weekend, Atlanta’s hip-hop community rolled out a regal red carpet for the return of a King. After T.I. was released from prison last Thursday, the King of the South was quick to make his presence felt publicly. With a few club appearances, song releases, radio interviews and, of course, a comeback performance at the taping for the October 11 BET Hip Hop Awards , T.I.’s actions suggest that he’s ready to reclaim his throne. And when he spoke to MTV News the King was noticeably humbled by the love ATL has shown him in the short time since his return. “I feel phenomenal. But I’ve always been the kind of guy — I never really get a chance to soak up the feeling of the moment because even as we speak, I’m planning for the next moment,” T.I. said during a Sunday brunch for his Akoo clothing brand on Sunday. “I’m looking to the future and trying to just move forward, just moving forward. I refuse to remain stagnant.” Last Friday, the day after his release, Tip gave Atlanta’s V-103 his first post-prison interview and premiered his new single “I’m Flexin’.” Later that night, the Trap Muzik MC made an appearance at Club Esso and followed that up the next day with an opening slot (along with Young Jeezy) at BET’s Hip Hop Awards. The night still wasn’t over, though, as he headed to an awards-show afterparty with Diddy . He topped that all off with the Sunday brunch and a surprise performance with Taylor Swift when the country star’s tour hit Atlanta that day. What a week! Related Artists T.I.

Talks are that the party’s already estimated at $100,000! Here’s what TMZ is reporting: “T.I. is re-writing the book when it comes to welcome home parties — because the recently-released rapper isn’t throwing himself a nightclub bash … he’s having a brunch in Atlanta! But don’t expect tea and crumpets — we’re told good pal Diddy is personally shipping in 150 bottles of Ciroc, one for each person in attendance. We’re told the whole bash will cost around $100K, with $20K just on food and additional $8K on dessert. The big surprise of the night — reps from AKOO Clothing, T.I.’s clothing line, will measure the VIP guests for custom-made clothing gifts. It’s set to go down on October 2, two days after T.I. gets released from the halfway house”. T.I. Spotted Out Of The Halfway House [PHOTO] T.I.
