How Justin Bieber Found His Hip-Hop Swag

Following the release of his hip-hop-heavy Believe, MTV News looks at the young pop star’s swaggiest moments. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: You’d think a 1995 collaboration between the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and rap’s widely recognized G.O.A.T., the Notorious B.I.G., would have made a bigger wave, but when MJ released “This Time Around” with Biggie Smalls 17 years ago, mixing pop with hip-hop was still very taboo. Despite the top billing, the track hit with a relative thud. The truth is it just didn’t feel organic, it’s not like Mike grew up listening to rap in Gary, Indiana, in the 1960s, the art form as we know it today just didn’t exist. Justin Bieber was a 1-year old when the King of Pop snagged the King of Hip-Hop for a feature. And unlike Jackson, he grew up during an era when rap stars like Biggie, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur were just as big as their pop counterparts — sometimes bigger. That’s why Bieber mixes hip-hop so seamlessly on his new album Believe. “One, I think they know it’s authentic and two, you got to remember Justin’s past,” JB’s manager Scooter Braun told MTV News. “I was the vice president of So So Def Records and then I left and Justin was the second artist I found after Asher Roth. So here’s this 13-year-old living in Atlanta, no one knows who he is, and he’s just riding around with me and we’re in the studio with Ludacris. We’re in the studio with T.I. We’re in the studio with Big Boi from OutKast, hanging out and he got exposed to that really early.” Ludacris, Drake, Big Sean and Nicki Minaj all appear on the 13-track Believe, but JB’s hip-hop jones didn’t develop overnight. It’s been years in the making. MTV News takes a look back at seven of Justin’s defining hip-hop moments. “Baby” featuring Ludacris JB didn’t have much rapper swag when he dropped “Baby” with Ludacris at the top of 2010, but the track sounded good, especially when Luda dropped his rapid-fire bars over the feel-good track. When he performed a remixed version of the track with fellow Canadian Drake at the 2010 Juno Awards, Justin further proved that he can rock with rap’s finest. “We Are the World 25 For Haiti” After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Quincy Jones assembled an all-star cast of musicians like Kanye West, Usher, Janet Jackson and Justin Bieber to remake the 1985 classic. During the recording, the Biebs got to kick it with notable MCs like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and his long-time friend Nipsey Hussle. “Runaway Love” Remix Featuring Kanye West and Raekwon Justin Biebs proved he “ain’t nothing to f— with” in August 2010 when he linked up with Kanye West and Raekwon for his “Runaway Love” remix. The Chef and Yeezy rapped on the track which sampled Wu-Tang Clan’s dusty underground favorite “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F— Wit.” JB and Nicki Sitting In A Tree So what do Nas and Justin Bieber Have in common? OK, kissing Nicki Minaj on the cheek at the 2010 Video Music Awards doesn’t really give Justin that much rap cred, the voluptuous Nicki could sing country music and we would’ve been just as jealous. “Speaking in Tongues” Freestyle Let’s face it, if you plan on spitting rap bars, the name Justin Bieber just isn’t going to cut it. Enter Shawty Mane: JB’s swagged-out alter-ego. Back in October 2010, Justin showed that singing wasn’t his only talent when he rapped over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tongues.” The freestyles didn’t stop there; Shawty Mane also spit bars over the Throne’s “Otis,” Gang Starr’s “DWYCK” and the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya?” The Biebs Shuts Up Tyler, the Creator It takes a lot to quiet Odd Future’s resident loud mouth Tyler, the Creator, but when he and JB met in February 2011, the multiplatinum pop star didn’t let Wolf Haley get a word in edge wise. “When I got in there, he was talkin’ about the ‘Yonkers’ video and sh–. It was weird, because I was sitting here starstruck, like, ‘Oh, f—, it’s Bieber. He’s asking me questions.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f— up so I can talk to you,’ ” Tyler told MTV News. Lil Swaggy Is Born Not only did 2 Chainz bless JB with a killer verse for his “Girlfriend” remix, the ATL hit-maker also blessed Bieber with a new moniker. “I call him Lil Swaggy,” 2 Chainz told MTV News. Sounds like a winner to us. Related Videos ‘Bieber Live’ Related Artists Justin Bieber

Miley Cyrus’ Engagement Ring: All The Details!

Liam Hemsworth wanted a ring that was ‘beautiful and romantic,’ celebrity jeweler Neil Lane tells People. By Christina Garibaldi Miley Cyrus’ engagement ring Photo: Neil Lane Miley Cyrus certainly has a lot to celebrate. On Wednesday (June 6), the former “Hannah Montana” star announced that she will be walking down the aisle with her boyfriend of three years, Liam Hemsworth . The two met on the set of their 2009 flick “The Last Song” and have been dating on-and-off ever since. Earlier this year, the couple denied engagement rumors after Cyrus was spotted with what looked to be an engagement ring. But now, they are ready to make it official. Before Miley and Liam walk down the aisle, let’s take a walk down memory lane and relive their three-year relationship. After telling People magazine that she “is so happy to be engaged,” Cyrus took to Twitter to thank her fans for their overwhelming outpouring of well-wishes. “thank you for all the love today 🙂 I’m happy to share this news with you all,” Cyrus wrote. “I feel like all my dreams are coming true. ❤ have a great day” Now adorning Cyrus’ left hand is a stunning 3.5-carat sparkler, which Hemsworth had a hand in creating. The “Hunger Games” star teamed up with celebrity jeweler Neil Lane, who told People that Hemsworth wanted “something really beautiful and romantic” for his soon-to-be bride. The ring, which has a vintage feel, was handcrafted in 18-karat gold and is garnished with diamond floral patterns. Yet, it’s the antique center stone that truly makes this a unique and beautiful engagement ring. “It was hand-cut around 1880 or 1890 and it’s unique and in its original form,” Lane said. “At that time no two diamonds were alike, as they were all hand-cut, so it’s fascinating to look at because it hasn’t been re-cut to look contemporary over the years. I find that really romantic.” And, according to Lane, so did Hemsworth: “It’s everything he was looking for.” Hemsworth wasted no time in giving Cyrus the ring, which was completed last week, just in time for him to propose to Cyrus on May 31. Send your well-wishes to Miley and Liam in the comments below! Related Photos A Look Back: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

Tupac Hologram Company Prepping Virtual Elvis

Digital Domain Media Group is working on a ‘virtual’ Elvis for a series of film and TV projects. By Gil Kaufman Elvis Presley Photo: Getty Images We may not be getting those Left Eye, Michael Jackson or Notorious B.I.G. holograms
we were hoping for anytime soon, but one of rock’s royal court will be digitally resurrected. Digital Domain Media Group, the company behind the earthshaking Tupac Shakur hologram
that created a global sensation at this year’s Coachella festival announced this week that it is planning to create a virtual Elvis Presley. Working with the Core Media Group — which owns the rights to Elvis’ estate — Digital Domain said it is working on a series of “virtual” Elvis likenesses for a wide range of entertainment projects that could include everything from film and TV to “multi-platform productions throughout the world.” DDMG, the Oscar-winning folks behind the special effects in films such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” has already started on some of the Elvis virtual renderings and plans to announce plans for a full roll-out soon. “Elvis Presley is the king of rock and roll … you have to start with the king,” Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer at Digital Domain told MTV News when asked why the company’s next major project would focus on the first wave rock star. “We’re in the creative development stages now. Instead of a single application we’re looking to bring Elvis back across a host of platforms, including live concerts in venues.” Like the Tupac stunt, Ulbrich said the Elvis rendering would not be based on archival footage, but original, exclusive performances by the King using the company’s bleeding-edge technology. He was not at liberty to describe how that process is managed, but Ulbrich promised that like in “Button” and “TRON: Legacy,” it would involve the holy grail of the industry: creating a synthetic likeness of a human being that is just as believable as the real thing. The company is in the process of building the Elvis programming now and Ulbrich said there was no timetable on when we might see the first fruits of this new experiment because the Digital Domain team is determined to take as long as necessary to get it right. “We take this very seriously because we want to pay great respect to Elvis and his legacy,” he said. In a statement announcing the deal, Elvis Presley Enterprises President and CEO, Jack Soden said, “This is a new and exciting way to bring the magic and music of Elvis Presley to life. His lifelong fans will be thrilled all over again and new audiences will discover the electric experience of Elvis the performer.” While Ulbrich said he was not at liberty to discuss what other music legends may get the Tupac/Elvis treatment next, he acknowledged that is not to say that, “we’re not talking about other things or looking at other things.” For the time being, though, the focus is on Elvis. Now, as whether we’ll see young, hip-swiveling Elvis or the latter-period Las Vegas version, Ulbrich would only say, “you’ll have to [wait and] see.” Related Artists Elvis Presley Tupac

‘Game Of Thrones’ Prepares For Battle Of Blackwater

The Lannisters and the Baratheons are gearing up for battle in season two’s penultimate episode. By Josh Wigler Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage in “Game of Thrones” Photo: Paul Schiraldi/HBO The calm before the storm is upon Westeros — and that says a lot, considering that the so-called “calm” includes an obscenely abused prostitute in King’s Landing, two charred hanging corpses in Winterfell, stolen dragons in Qarth and bruised, beaten prisoners of war north of the Wall. But believe it or not, that really is just the palate-cleanser before a monumental battle strikes the Seven Kingdoms. All season long, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has warned viewers that “war is coming,” and next week, it’ll finally be here via the fabled Battle of Blackwater, an all-out slugfest between the Lannister forces and the trueborn Baratheons. Which side will win? It’s too early to say. But no matter who emerges victorious, we can promise you this: Just as Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview once warned, there will be blood. Keep reading for a recap of this week’s “Game of Thrones,” which sets the stage for next week’s epic battle. The Princes of Winterfell Theon Greyjoy has fallen hard throughout season two. Last year, he was simply an unlikable boy; now, he’s a full-on baby-killer who doesn’t know when he’s lost. Theon’s unquenchable desire to please his father and prove himself a worthy Ironborn has turned him into one of the most wanted men in Westeros. Even his sister Yara, typically the type to smack Theon across the face well before offering him words of encouragement, expresses her sibling loyalty to the younger Greyjoy, doing her best to get him the hell out of Winterfell before Northerners come calling for his head. Her words fall on deaf ears; Theon stays in Winterfell, and the bastard Ramsay Bolton is just days away from claiming vengeance on behalf of Team Stark. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Theon, the boys he’s so desperately looking for — Bran and Rickon — are more or less right under his nose, hiding in the crypts of Winterfell. A brilliant hiding spot … spooky but brilliant. The Seeds of Betrayal Further north, Jon Snow’s inability to kill the wildling girl Ygritte has led to his captivity at the redhead’s hands, but it also might prove his saving grace: Ygritte clearly has interest in Jon, enough to keep him alive a little bit longer. (It doesn’t hurt that the other wildlings, the Lord of Bones in particular, know that Jon’s the bastard son of Ned Stark, either; that makes him a decent bargaining chip worth holding onto.) Another reason why Jon might flourish under captivity: Qhorin Halfhand, also a prisoner, is doing everything he can to distance himself from Jon, to make it clear that Snow betrayed his vows and the Night’s Watch in keeping Ygritte alive. How much of it is Qhorin’s actual wrath against Jon or just a ploy to weaken the wildlings? We’ll have to keep watching to find out. What’s a Stark Without Honor? Jon Snow isn’t the only Stark dealing with issues of honor. After his mother, Catelyn, betrays the cause by freeing the king-slayer Jaime Lannister and shipping him back to King’s Landing with Brienne in tow — all in an effort to rescue Sansa and Arya from the Lannisters’ clutches, mind you — Robb is left feeling more crushed than ever. With the entire North looking to him for leadership and his own flesh and blood betraying him — not to mention the recent treachery of his best friend Theon — the King in the North is understandably down and out. So who can really blame him for doing the proverbial “dance with dragons” with Talisa of Volantis? Sure, he’s promised to a Frey, but the man’s got needs, and it’s clear that this is more than just a physical fling. That said, there’s also no doubting that Robb’s dishonored himself by blemishing his pledge to marry a daughter of House Frey. Just how badly that comes back to haunt him and his is something we’ll see in the future, I’m sure. The Wolf and the Lion Break Up More heartbreak for Team Stark, though this is more of the viewership variety: The secret “Tywin Loves Arya” show-within-a-show is now at an end. The Lannister patriarch leaves Harrenhal to defend King’s Landing against Stannis, without so much as a parting word of advice for the young wolf. Their dynamic stands out as one of the highlights of season two, and it’ll certainly be missed in the episodes to come. Still, Arya’s continued friendship with faceless man Jaqen H’Ghar remains a strongpoint of the season, and I suspect we’re not completely finished with their kill-happy partnership … not just yet. War, War Everywhere King’s Landing has been a spit-show all season long, and come next week’s episode, it’ll be a full-on bloodbath. The upcoming episode is appropriately titled “Blackwater,” as in the bay King’s Landing sits upon and the site of the impending battle between Lannister loyalists and Baratheon banner-men. Sunday’s episode perfectly set the stage: In King’s Landing, Tyrion does his best to keep himself together in light of Cersei ordering the prostitute Ros beaten beyond recognition (because she incorrectly believes her to be Tyrion’s lover), the peoples’ growing mistrust of Tyrion despite his behind-the-scenes efforts to protect them, and the very real threat of war coming to the Seven Kingdoms’ capital in just a few short hours. Out at sea, Davos Seaworth is given the unexpected news that if Stannis beats Joffrey and claims the Iron Throne, the title of Hand of the King will be his. Without a doubt, the stakes are big on both sides of the battle, and it’s hard to find someone to root for: Davos is likable enough, and Stannis, hard as he is, is certainly a better pick for king than the cruel Joffrey. But even though the Lannisters are horrible people, Tyrion’s on their side, and we love Tyrion. What happens to the Imp if Stannis and his men win the day? For Tyrion’s sake, let’s hope we don’t find out. Tell us what you thought of this week’s “Thrones” in the comments section below! T.I. To Stir Up Trouble On Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live’!

Rap rookie Tito Lopez will also join Sway at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman T.I. Photo: Rahav Segev/ Getty Images It’s time to roll out the royal carpet, because the King is set to make his debut on “RapFix Live.” On Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, T.I. will sit down with Sway Calloway and chop it up about his upcoming album, Trouble Man. Tip has a grind like no other. Since being released from prison last fall, the Atlanta rapper landed a VH1 reality series with his wife, Tiny, added some new muscle to his Grand Hustle record label, and immediately began recording for his eighth solo album. The street-bred MC, who popularized the term Trap Music, has long promised a return to the T.I. of old. “We got a lot of hot, old-school, vintage T.I. records on there,” he told MTV News during a January interview. “I’m talking like gutter, gangsta, intellectual ignorance, hard-core stadium sh–, but at the same time, we got those over-the-top crossover records as well, big features and whatnot we plan on putting into play.” The fiery lyricist isn’t only concerned with his own music: Earlier this month, prot

Tyga Says Clearing MLK Sample ‘Not Really My Job’

‘That’s why you got lawyers and a label that’s supposed to do that, and I guess it just got overlooked,’ he tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Tyga on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Hip-hop was built on sampling. Beat breaks from old-school records like the Honeydrippers’ soul classic “Impeach the President” and the Incredible Bongo Band’s 1973 version of “Apache” have become the basis for a number of notable rap records. As essential as sampling is to hip-hop culture, it is also a vital part of the music business, and utilizing an unauthorized sample can be costly to an artist. Tyga had to learn the hard way when he failed to clear a sample of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech for the title track of his Careless World: The Rise of the Last King LP. Because Tyga and his label failed to clear the sample with MLK’s estate, the physical copies of his album were removed from stores when it was released last week, on February 21. “I felt like a lot of my fans and some of the younger generation know of Martin Luther King, but they don’t really understand his struggle or what he did and the message he was trying to give to younger people like myself,” Tyga explained on Wednesday’s (February 29) “RapFix Live.” “Me knowing that is why I used the phrase on that song, and I really wanted that part on the song. It was, like, 10 seconds. If I thought it was gonna jeopardize my first-week sales, I wouldn’t have used it. I used it because I wanted the message to get out.” Clearing samples isn’t a simple process, and there are quite a few legalities to consider. Some material is considered fair-use, but the guidelines that define what is and is not considered fair use aren’t always cut-and-dried. “I thought it would be like more public use, since it was on YouTube. I eventually knew you had to get it cleared with someone, but that’s not really my job to do,” Tyga said. “My job is to be the artist and really put all my effort into the music. That’s why you got lawyers and a label that’s supposed to do that, and I guess it just got overlooked.” The mishap has definitely cost Tyga a significant percentage of his first-week sales. He estimates that about 200,000 physical copies of his album were pulled from stores, and his entire sales tally came strictly from digital outlets. When it was all said and done, Carless World moved 61,000 digital copies and would have sold even more, if not for the sample snafu. “To hear that, to get that phone call, it’s like, you know, don’t bring me all the way to the finish line and drop the baton,” he said, disappointed. “I’ve been working so hard for this, and you guys couldn’t clear a little sample?” It is unclear where the blame lies, be it with Tyga’s camp, his Cash Money label or CM’s distributor Universal Republic. Whatever the case, the “Rack City” rapper is bummed that he had to compromise his artistic vision. “It was the fact that I wanted this Martin Luther King phrase on this part of the song and I couldn’t get it,” he said. “It’s all good. We gonna keep rolling with the punches, and it’s a great album.” Did you download Tyga’s new album? Share your reviews in the comments!
