Jonathan Nolan promises Tom Hardy is ‘spectacular’ in the wake of controversy over villain’s muffled vocals in ‘DKR’ prologue. By James Montgomery Tom Hardy in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures Fans and critics may have had a difficult time understanding Bane’s dialogue in “The Dark Knight Rises” prologue, but they’ll have no problem comprehending what screenwriter Jonathan Nolan has to say about the matter. In an interview at a Television Critics Association event in Los Angeles, director Christopher Nolan’s brother was asked about the reaction some folks had to Bane’s muffled lines. And while he admitted he’d rather discuss his CBS drama “Person of Interest,” he didn’t exactly duck the question, either. “I’ve gotta tell you, I think what Tom Hardy is doing with the role is spectacular,” Nolan said. “I’ve had the benefit of seeing a little bit more than the audience has seen, at this point, and it’s pretty spectacular.” The writer doled out praise for Hardy — who plays the veiny, verbose villain in the upcoming film — and assured fans that, really, the prologue shows just one small part of a very multifaceted character. Nolan was rather tight-lipped about additional “Dark Knight” details, saying only, “We’re still in lock-down mode, in terms of talking about that project.” Though he did speak about the inspiration behind the eye-popping, mid-air snatch-and-grab that’s prominently featured in the prologue. “It’s an amazing team with my brother [Christopher Nolan], [producer] David Goyer and myself. Those are two great guys to work with and brainstorm with,” Nolan said. “I think Chris [has] long wanted to do the aerial spectacular. It’s such a good fit for the IMAX cameras that he likes to shoot with, and so that was a long time in the making.” What do you think of Bane’s voice in the prologue? Sound off! Has Christopher Nolan cleaned up the prologue’s soundtrack? Let’s discuss in The Weekly Rising . By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros As highly anticipated as “The Dark Knight Rises” is, an unfortunate parenthetical has followed most praise of the six-minute prologue and the first theatrical trailer. Tom Hardy ‘s voice became the hot topic of Batman conversations as soon as critics saw the first minutes of the film, which focus heavily on the masked villain Bane. Fans complained, too, wishing they could comprehend more from a character they wanted to like so much, but almost every complaint came with a caveat tacked on: “I’m sure Nolan will fix it.” Then, at the height of discussion, an unnamed source “close to the movie” told The Hollywood Reporter that Nolan had no intentions of completely reworking Bane’s voice, insisting he would only make slight changes to the sound mix. Now, Collider has the testimony of a source that claims Warner Bros. sent a new soundtrack for the prologue still attached to select IMAX showings of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” making Bane’s dialogue “40 to 50 percent” clearer. Here is the source’s full account: “A friend of mine who is an IMAX projectionist told me they received a new soundtrack for the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ prologue. He said it’s now a combo soundtrack with ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ but the cool thing about this is that they’ve cleaned up the dialogue. They’ve gone in and lowered the background noise of the plane and other things, thus making Bane’s dialogue clearer and more understandable. He asked some people after they left the movie if they could understand Bane and they all said they had no issue understanding him, and were excited for the movie.” Warner Bros. told The New York Times ‘ Dave Itzkoff that there was “no truth” to the rumors, but Collider followed up its initial report with a letter purportedly from IMAX sent to its projectionists. The letter instructs them on how to dub the combined tracks properly and perfectly aligns with the original report. This is certainly looking like the tweak we’ve expected from Nolan since The Hollywood Reporter article. If the director is adamant about keeping the gargled effect on Bane’s voice and encouraging the audience to participate in the film more, this is the change that needed to be made. Regardless of whether you’re part of the camp that insists the voice is comprehendible, the change, however slight it may be, was needed. Are you looking forward to a cleaned-up Bane? Let me know at @KPSull, and I’ll discuss some of your responses over at Splash Page on Wednesday. After premiering this past weekend before Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows screenings, the latest official trailer for The Dark Knight Rises has hit the Internet today. Depicting a Gotham City eight years after the events in 2008’s The Dark Knight , the trailer teases societal upheaval, (literally) explosive football plays and best of all, two new villains: Anne Hathaway ‘s Catwoman (or at least, Selina Kyle) and Tom Hardy ‘s mysterious, mumbling Bane. Let’s parse the trailer the only way we know how: By the numbers.

A lucky audience got a glimpse at director’s nearly seven-minute clip, in which Bane proves as fearsome as Batman fans have hoped. By Kara Warner “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures LOS ANGELES — If you happened to be in or around the IMAX theater at Universal City Walk Thursday night, there’s a decent chance you may have been privy to the collective fangasm (some shock and awe) generated by the lucky audience invited to screen the prologue for Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nolan was on hand himself to introduce the nearly seven-minute clip, which he described as, basically, the opening sequence, with a few out-of-order bonus shots thrown in at the end. The director also emphasized his love for IMAX technology, explaining that even though it was probably developed before he was born, it is “far and away the best imaging format created,” and it’s one that allows fans to experience the grandeur of old Hollywood films, which Nolan said is “slowly being chipped away.” At the special screening, he encouraged fans to seek out official IMAX screens for a fully immersive experience when “Rises” opens next summer, but not to inquire about the plot of the film. “I’ve barely started to edit, so don’t ask me about the ending,” he joked just before the lights in the theater dimmed. In the interest of preserving the mystery of the movie, Warner Bros. politely asked journalists in attendance to refrain from giving blow-by-blow reactions, a request MTV News is happy to heed. What we can say is that the action in the opening sequence occurs mostly on a plane and that it features several high-flying, mind-blowing special effects of the practical, not the CG, variety. The sequence seems to pick up right where “The Dark Knight” leaves off — Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent’s funeral — and, most important, features one of the more memorable character introductions we’ve seen of late as viewers got the first look at Tom Hardy in action as Bane, complete with creepy leather face mask. There are government agents, military personnel and civilians involved in the setup, but it’s all eyes on Bane. And if what we see him say and do in the first few minutes is representative of his villainous arc in the full-length feature, it’s clear that Nolan is venturing into more ominous territory in “Rises.” Where Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker was dark, twisted and almost whimsically crazy, Hardy’s Bane is a horrific, maniacal force. That’s apparent whenever the camera locks onto his eyes or when he speaks for the first time, revealing a garbled, aggressive German accent. Bane will no doubt prove a formidable force to be reckoned with, and we can’t help but anticipate his first meeting with Batman. Speaking of Batman, the caped crusader, played of course by Christian Bale, makes his first appearance in a few quick clips at the very end, along with new additions Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Take a look at the best snapshots from Gotham in this week’s The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale and Tom Hardy on the set of “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Getty Images The entirety of this year has been spent in “The Dark Knight Rises” anticipation. Last year was all about “Inception” and its accompanying conspiracy theories. (COBB’S WEDDING RING IS HIS TOTEM!!! OMG!) But 2011 was nothing but pure excitement for Christopher Nolan ‘s return to Gotham City. Fans waited eagerly for any bit of information that might leak from the set, living from set photo to official snapshot. With so many now iconic and infamous pictures that made up the “Dark Knight Rises” hype landscape for 2011, this seems like a good time, as part of MTV News’ look back at the Best of 2011 , to check out the 10 best “Rises” pictures from the year. 10. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Mr. Freeze Back in February, when JGL joined the cast, the speculative theories abounded as to who the actor would be playing. Over at Splash Page, the team put together Photoshops of Gordon-Levitt as different Batman villains, including a believable Mr. Freeze . 9. Empire ‘s Batman Cover Bane may have won the fan poll to reveal his cover first, but the Batman cover held more surprises for fans. In it, he held what looks like some new tech from his man Lucius Fox. We’ll have to wait and see what the weapon ends up doing. 8. Catwoman Revealed Warner Bros. rushed out the first official picture of Catwoman after on-set photos were set to leak any moment. The picture shocked because of Selina Kyle’s new ride, the Batpod. The first photo stirred controversy and led to loads of analysis, including an article by MTV’s Brian Phares that led to an Anne Hathway reply. 7. Bane Revealed It wasn’t much of a look, but it was enough to finally get fans excited about the prospect of having Bane as the movie’s main villain . Nolan delivered on the same realistic, darker look for the Batman universe. 6. First Poster Released “Inception 2”? That was the general response to the first, very “Inception”-influenced poster for “The Dark Knight Rises,” and that is by no means a bad thing. The poster let everyone know that all is not well in Gotham, and it’s time for Batman to finally return. 5. Most Realistic. Fan Poster. Ever. It probably made you do a double take. It fooled me for sure. The expertly crafted fake perfectly combined the look of Nolan’s films and some pictures that looked completely believable. 4. Catwoman Shows Off Her Ears One of the biggest complaints from the first Catwoman photo was the lack of ears. What’s a Catwoman without her ears? Turns out that they were there all along . They were just covering her eyes. 3. The Batwing and the Bomb Perhaps the most interesting spy photo of the year showed Batman in his trusty Batwing hovering over a device that clearly looks like some sort of bomb. There are so many questions one could ask, but just staring at the pictures reminds you why you’re excited for this movie. 2. Bane Remembers Harvey Dent The cast has been talking about the importance of “Rises” as the conclusion of a trilogy, and Empire provided some evidence toward that notion when it released this photo of Bane holding a picture of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. How does the former District Attorney factor into the story line seven or eight years down the line? 1. Batman and Bane Duke It Out This photo says it all, doesn’t it? This is exactly what we all want to see come next July. Bane is a more physical opponent than Batman’s had in the series, and we’re finally going to see him go blow to blow with a big, hulking monster. Honorable Mention: My Set Visit So maybe I didn’t get to see much. Just being on the set and seeing the work that goes into making a movie on this scale solidified “The Dark Knight Rises” as my most anticipated of 2012. In this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy to Me,’ the team tackles the Batman prologue, the latest ‘Ender’s Game’ casting and more. By Josh Wigler Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures After a weeklong hiatus, “Talk Nerdy to Me” is back in action with all of your comic book, movie and TV needs. From today’s official announcement of the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue to a special cameo from Daniel Day-Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln beard, this week’s “Talk Nerdy” has it all. Keep reading for a taste of what you’ll see this week, and watch the episode in the video below! “Dark Knight” Prologue Confirmed Now that the news is official, the Talk Nerdy team is left wondering what Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Rises” prologue might entail. Are we in store for a “Batman Begins”-inspired montage? Might we see the death of a popular character from the Caped Crusader’s supporting cast? We floated a few of our own theories, however ridiculous, in this week’s episode. “Ender’s” Cast The wheels are most certainly in motion for “Ender’s Game,” director Gavin Hood’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved Orson Scott Card novel. “Hugo” star Asa Butterfield has been confirmed to play the titular Ender, and there are talks of “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld and the legendary Harrison Ford joining the cast as well. Great actors, to be sure, but are they the right ones for the project? Find out what Nerdy’s Brian Phares thinks about the upcoming project. The “Game of Thrones” Blu’s When you play the “Game of Thrones,” you win or you die. But when it comes to the HBO fantasy show’s upcoming Blu-ray collection, it looks like we’re all going to win. The Blu-ray was announced earlier this week, and the details are bound to have fans of the franchise foaming at the mouth. The Nerdy team geeked out over the upcoming collection, especially the announced “Creating the Dothraki Language” feature. Spider-Leak, Spider-Leak The weekend box office is dry in terms of new wide releases, so we recommend you just go ahead and see “The Muppets” again. It’s that good! In lieu of our normal box-office report, this week’s Talk Nerdy focused on the infamous “Amazing Spider-Man” Lizard leak from earlier in the week. Needless to say, the team was not impressed. Tell us what you thought of this week’s Talk Nerdy in the comments section!
