‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue Debate Gets ‘Nerdy’

In this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy to Me,’ the team tackles the Batman prologue, the latest ‘Ender’s Game’ casting and more. By Josh Wigler Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures After a weeklong hiatus, “Talk Nerdy to Me” is back in action with all of your comic book, movie and TV needs. From today’s official announcement of the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue to a special cameo from Daniel Day-Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln beard, this week’s “Talk Nerdy” has it all. Keep reading for a taste of what you’ll see this week, and watch the episode in the video below! “Dark Knight” Prologue Confirmed Now that the news is official, the Talk Nerdy team is left wondering what Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Rises” prologue might entail. Are we in store for a “Batman Begins”-inspired montage? Might we see the death of a popular character from the Caped Crusader’s supporting cast? We floated a few of our own theories, however ridiculous, in this week’s episode. “Ender’s” Cast The wheels are most certainly in motion for “Ender’s Game,” director Gavin Hood’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved Orson Scott Card novel. “Hugo” star Asa Butterfield has been confirmed to play the titular Ender, and there are talks of “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld and the legendary Harrison Ford joining the cast as well. Great actors, to be sure, but are they the right ones for the project? Find out what Nerdy’s Brian Phares thinks about the upcoming project. The “Game of Thrones” Blu’s When you play the “Game of Thrones,” you win or you die. But when it comes to the HBO fantasy show’s upcoming Blu-ray collection, it looks like we’re all going to win. The Blu-ray was announced earlier this week, and the details are bound to have fans of the franchise foaming at the mouth. The Nerdy team geeked out over the upcoming collection, especially the announced “Creating the Dothraki Language” feature. Spider-Leak, Spider-Leak The weekend box office is dry in terms of new wide releases, so we recommend you just go ahead and see “The Muppets” again. It’s that good! In lieu of our normal box-office report, this week’s Talk Nerdy focused on the infamous “Amazing Spider-Man” Lizard leak from earlier in the week. Needless to say, the team was not impressed. Tell us what you thought of this week’s Talk Nerdy in the comments section! ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Last Batman Role For Christian Bale

‘I wrapped a few days ago, so that will be the last time I’m taking that cowl off,’ actor says. By Gil Kaufman Christian Bale on the set of “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Jared Wickerham/ Getty Images After lasting longer in the role than any other actor, Christian Bale has confirmed that the upcoming finale of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises,” will be his curtain call as the iconic crime fighter. “I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that cowl off,” Bale reportedly told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I believe the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and Chris — that will be the end of that Batman era.” The $200 million-plus epic , out July 20, will also feature Gary Oldman , Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as villain Bane . The Oscar-winning actor also held forth on the complexity of the role that has been inhabited in the past by George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton. “Bruce Wayne is absolutely sincere as Bruce Wayne, and as Batman utterly sincere. But Bruce Wayne, the playboy, is a pure facade, it’s a lie he has, somehow, to control one side of your soul that’s not really under control,” Bale said. “In fact, only Alfred knows who he is. It’s time for Bruce Wayne to face the pain that has always stirred his life.” Bale took over as Batman in 2005’s “Batman Begins” and reprised his role in 2008’s $1 billion-grossing “The Dark Knight.” Though Hathaway has gotten some flack for the look of her Catwoman costume , Bale had nothing but praise for his co-star. “When Chris watched the screen test, he agreed that Anne did a wonderful job. In many ways, she has the hardest job,” he said. “There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne’s role as being the toughest job of any of us.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Is ‘Just Epic,’ Gary Oldman Says

‘I will say this: There’s a conclusion,’ actor tells MTV News of ‘Rises’ being the last in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gary Oldman in the teaser trailer for “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Gary Oldman may have learned his lesson about speaking candidly when it comes to Batman movies. When he spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz while promoting “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” Oldman measured each word about “The Dark Knight Rises” carefully. Quite a few seconds passed before Oldman started to answer our first question about the next Batman movie, but he assured Horowitz that it was not something to read into. Oldman was quick to recount the tale of the time he opened up at Comic-Con two years ago and said the next Batman film would happen in the next year or so. “It went around the world,” Oldman marveled. “[Warner Bros. is] the studio, and it’s their prerogative.” When he finally did open up about the purported finale of Christopher Nolan ‘s Batman trilogy, Oldman offered up some insights into the overall vision of the film. “I will say this: There’s a conclusion. He touches on the first [film] and weaves it in,” he said. “It resolves. I think it’s a trilogy. It’s just great. The story is terrific. It is just epic.” One of the biggest shadows “The Dark Knight Rises” will need to escape is the legacy of Heath Ledger ‘s iconic performance. Oldman said the choice of Bane as the villain was a strategic one on Nolan’s part. “I think it was smart of Chris to go with a lesser-known villain rather than — because Heath’s performance, first of all, we love the Joker in Batman,” Oldman said. “Heath’s performance was so dazzling that you got to think, ‘How the hell do I top it?’ Instead of going for Riddler, instead of going for Penguin, he’s gone a slightly different way with the story.” Finally, Oldman commented on the essential role of “Rises” in Nolan’s Batman story, saying it is something more than a cash grab. “I think [Nolan’s] got enough smarts and enough class. I know this much about Chris Nolan: He wouldn’t make a third for the sake of it,” he said. Liam Neeson ‘Eager’ To See ‘Dark Knight Rises’

But the actor, whose Ra’s Al Ghul is rumored to be in the threequel, says he doesn’t have ‘a f—ing clue’ about the film. By Kevin P. Sullivan Liam Neeson Photo: MTV News Whether Liam Neeson will reprise his villainous role of Ra’s Al Ghul for the final film of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy remains one of the biggest question marks hovering over “The Dark Knight Rises.” Rumors fill Internet forums, hyping the villain’s potential return, but we’ll let you decide if you want to seek out the clues. If you ask Neeson about “Rises,” he might act a little confused. When MTV News sat down with the Academy Award-nominated actor to discuss his upcoming film “The Grey,” Neeson’s role in “Batman Begins” slipped his mind for a second. “You’re throwing me for a loop there,” Neeson said after a long pause. “That’s right. I was in ‘Batman.’ I trained him,” he added in his best Ra’s voice with a laugh. While it’s still up in the air whether he’ll make an appearance, Neeson has already appeared in the form of a voice-over in the trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which recycled some of his lines from “Batman Begins.” One of the hints that has been repeatedly dropped by people involved with the film is that the conclusion to the trilogy brings everything full-circle, perhaps referencing returning elements from “Batman Begins.” With the series drawing to a close, Neeson said he looks back fondly on the first two Batman films and is looking forward to the finale. “Chris Nolan’s made wonderful films, very rich, dark and complex, especially [‘The Dark Knight’]. Of course, it was cloaked in tragedy,” Neeson said, referencing the death of Heath Ledger. But when it comes to “Rises,” Neeson claims to be completely in the dark. “I’m eager to see this one,” he said. “I haven’t a f—ing clue what it’s about.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Batman And Bane Take Over Manhattan

We’ve got all your Caped Crusader news in The Weekly Rising, MTV News’ new ‘Dark Knight Rises’ column. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale and Tom Hardy on the New York City set of “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Getty Images Because we know you’re as obsessed with all things Batman as we are, we’re kicking off The Weekly Rising, a brand-new column that will cover everything “The Dark Knight Rises,” from news roundups to rumors and analysis. Every Monday, we’ll give you the lowdown on the week in Bats and prep you for the big release next July. Spoilers are inevitable, and we’ll be sure to do our best to give you the heads-up when you might need to start covering your ears and saying “Na na na na na na na na Batman!” This week, we’ll fill you in on our NYC set visit from last week, give an update from filming back on Wall Street over the weekend and offer a tip on how to get your voice into “The Dark Knight Rises” (hint: It involves screaming at your computer, so make sure no one else is home). NYC Becomes Gotham It would have taken a lot of will power to work and live in New York City and not feel at least a small impulse to go check out what they’ve been filming around the city. The location shoots in Manhattan began a little over a week ago, and there has been a ton of great stuff happening. Production converted Trump Tower into the headquarters for Wayne Enterprises , making it the third form of Gotham’s mystical shape-shifting skyscraper. Outside the building, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake helped a very Patrick Bateman-looking Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne through a crowd of reporters. Spoilers ahead! We’ll let you know when you can come back out. Last weekend, things got more interesting. There was a Batwing hovering over Wall Street and, even more interesting, a large bomb-like object with a timer on it. Lots of theories got thrown around, including the popular “Bane’s earthquake machine,” which honestly seems too unrealistic. True believers in the earthquake-gadget theory were quick to reply, “What about the microwave emitter from ‘Batman Begins,’ smart guy? Huh? Is that more realistic? You think you’re so smart.” Our response: Anyone who has seen a workplace microwave after someone nuked a bowl of chili without covering it knows what kind of destruction microwaves can dole out. End spoilers. On the Scene So after that, how could we not stake out the set? Maybe we’d catch another motorcycle chase or at least see Bale in full Batman regalia, so we headed down to the set of “Magnus Rex,” the fake title of the production, at 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue to see what we could see. Turns out, we picked the wrong day to go. Check out the embedded video from our set visit; there aren’t any spoilers, because we had no idea what was going on. Not a total disappointment, but the real sadness didn’t set in until Saturday, the day we didn’t visit the set, and all hell broke loose. Spoilers are back! Batman and Bane literally fought a battle, full armies in tow, on Wall Street over the weekend — the cops with Bats and some pissed-off citizenry with Bane. Pictures and videos from the downtown war popped up everywhere, the best ones over at SuperheroHype.com , all of them mocking us. But enough about our deep, deep sadness — what the hell was going on? Most of the talk about the general arc of “Rises” points to the disintegration of Gotham’s infrastructure with Bane leading point. The fight looked like a continuation from the L.A. shoot, where Batman and Bane duked it out in the snow, so we could be seeing the same sequence here. Is Bane’s army just the citizens of Gotham or the long-rumored return of the League of Shadows? We say it was citizens — not shadowy enough. End spoilers. Make Your Voice Heard Finally, last week, composer Hans Zimmer offered fans a unique opportunity to join in on some cult-like chanting. If you head over to UJAM , you can record your own version of the “Bah-Sah-Rah” chant from the trailer and the viral campaign that unveiled the first picture of Tom Hardy as Bane. Speaking of which, where the hell is the viral campaign? “Why So Serious” was a major component of the lead-up to “The Dark Knight,” and all we’ve seen so far is the Bane picture . We can’t be the only ones who miss receiving clues from the Joker and waiting while more enthusiastic fans completed tasks, so we could reap the rewards of their hard work. Now we want to hear from you: It was rumored last week that a new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” will premiere December 16 in front of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the same day the six-minute prologue appears before IMAX screenings of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” What do you want to see from the trailer and prologue? Let me know on Twitter via @KPSull, and we’ll discuss next week. ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Takes Over Manhattan in New Set Photos

Batman makes an appearance in the cockpit of the Batwing in new pics. By Kevin P. Sullivan Joseph Gordon-Levitt films a scene of “Dark Knight Rises” in Manhattan in front of the Stock Exchange on Sunday Photo: Getty Images Batman has returned to Gotham — New York City, that is — to film scenes from “The Dark Knight Rises” and he arrived in style. More set photos hit the Web on Monday (October 31), mostly depicting the same scenes featured in online images from last week, but with one big change. (Fans should be forewarned: there are spoilers ahead .) For photos from the set, click here. In one of the pictures published last week, Joseph Gordon-Levitt ‘s character, a beat cop named John Blake, escorts Christian Bale ‘s Batman, who’s dressed in business attire; in another, the beat cop fires a gun at some fleeing bikers. Gordon-Levitt’s character has been the center of much discussion about the “Rises” plot and who the character may end up being. One rumor that continues to circulate is that John Blake may end up being Robin, the Boy Wonder, something Gordon-Levitt has remained quiet about. The latest crop of pictures follows what is presumably the same scene but further along in the action. The riders on the motocross bikes are still driving away and jumping over cop cars, but this time the Batwing is visible . Although the Batwing has been featured in dozens of leaked set photos, the pictures posted by a user to the Superhero Hype forum are particularly interesting because they clearly show Batman in the cockpit. If that wasn’t enough, he seems to be hovering above a large explosive device in the middle of the street. It’s unclear who ends up on the back of the motorcycles or what they’re doing on them. Matthew Modine was on set, but there are conflicting reports on what role his character, Nixon, is playing and whether it was actually Modine’s stunt double on the back of the bike. Anne Hathaway’s Full Catwoman Costume Revealed

Latest photo of actress in ‘Dark Knight Rises’ gear shows lots of leather, dangerously high heels and a curious set of ears. By Eric Ditzian Anne Hathaway on the set of “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: PhamousFotos/ Splash News Where are Catwoman’s ears? And what’s up with her eyewear, perhaps more reminiscent of BluBlockers than something a Gotham City villain would rock? Those were among our first questions in August when we checked out the first official photo of Anne Hathaway in character . Newly published paparazzi pics from the Los Angeles set of “The Dark Knight Rises,” however, might deliver answers to both of those geeky queries. The new shots appear to suggest Catwoman’s glasses flip up to create ear-like points above her head. Function and form! In a sense, then (and if this hypothesis is correct), Hathaway’s full costume was on display back in August, just not in a recognizable or complete form. The glasses-into-ears theory appears to be a more logical one than another bit of superhero speculation out there: that Catwoman’s mask, based on those hollow-looking ears and some similar design lines, is actually Batman’s mask, artfully mangled. While Hathaway’s character clearly does a bit of borrowing (or, more likely, stealing) from Bruce Wayne, as in the photo where she rides his Batpod, we’re not sold on the similarity between each mask. The rest of the costume, as revealed in the new photos, is largely what we’ve already seen: lots of tight leather and a pair of dangerously high-heel boots; we can understand why Hathaway has previously cracked that she is living on kale and dust, just so she can slip into the ensemble. According to Hathaway, the collective reaction to the first look at her Catwoman costume — including in some corners within the MTV Newsroom — was a resounding, “Meh.” But the actress also promised us that we’ve only seen “about a tenth of what that suit can do.” Perhaps her transforming ears — if that’s what they really are — represent a few more percentage points. With the rapid pace of photos coming out the “Dark Knight” set, we’ll undoubtedly get even more soon. These Vegan Parents Ain’t Isht! Couple Gets Life Sentence For Starving Baby On Only Soy Milk And Apple Juice

SMH: An Atlanta vegan couple whose malnourished 6-week-old son starved to death after they fed him a too-limited diet of soy milk and apple juice will have to serve their life sentences for murder, Georgia’s top court ruled on Monday. The Georgia Supreme Court’s unanimous decision rejected appeals by Jade Sanders and Lamont Thomas. The two first-time parents in their 20s at the time lived in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. They rushed their infant, Crown Shakur, to the hospital in April 2004 after he began to have trouble breathing. Doctors who couldn’t resuscitate him determined he died because of extreme malnourishment or starvation. Police searching the couple’s apartment found a soy milk bottle, an apple juice bottle and a rancid-smelling baby bottle caked with debris. At the 2007 trial, prosecutors said the soy milk cartons in their apartment stated that it wasn’t to be used as a substitute for baby formula. They also contended that the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as his body wasted away. He was just 3.5 pounds when he died, about as much as a baby weighs at 7 months into a normal pregnancy. A jury convicted them of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. “No matter how many times they want to say, `We’re vegans, we’re vegetarians,’ that’s not the issue in this case,” prosecutor Chuck Boring said during the trial. “The child died because he was not fed. Period.” Defense attorneys countered that the parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby was in danger until they rushed his emaciated body to the hospital. “I loved my son—and I did not starve him,” Jade Sanders said at her May 2007 sentencing hearing. In her appeal, Sanders’ attorney argued the evidence wasn’t strong enough to support the verdict. And Thomas’ lawyer claimed his trial attorney was ineffective because he failed to call an expert to support his theory that his son’s death was linked to cystic fibrosis and not starvation. These people could not have been that dumb to think that their baby could survive on just soy milk….especially since it states clearly on the carton that soy milk does not replace baby formula. If they were so natural and wholesome, why didn’t she breastfeed the baby?? Do you think they deserve life?? Source
