Kristen Stewart vs. Rupert Sanders: Who’s to Blame?

Let’s get this out of the way: Kristen Stewart was wrong for cheating on Robert Pattinson . There’s no excuse for infidelity. It’s immoral and dishonest and hurtful to the person you supposedly care about most. But – good gracious! – have you been reading the Internet since this scandal broke?!? Is it possible justifiable criticism has morphed into ugly, inappropriate, sexist anger? Especially when one considers Stewart’s age and the marital status of the man with whom she got involved? Stewart is 22. Rupert Sanders is 41. He is married and has two children. She is legally single and has none. According to various reports, the leaked photos of this pair represented the entirety of their actions; i.e. they did not have sex . Moreover, Sanders served in the capacity of Stewart’s director on Snow White and the Huntsman , a position of power, someone Stewart – on a professional basis, granted – took orders from for many weeks. But where is the backlash against Sanders? The latest rumor even states he’ll be hired back as director on a possible Snow White sequel , while Stewart’s role has either been eliminated or greatly reduced. Considering all these factors, we need to ask: Is Kristen Stewart being unfairly treated by the public?

POLL: Would You See A Snow White And The Huntsman Sequel That Didn’t Star Kristen Stewart?

With Deadline reporting that Universal Pictures is denying a Hollywood Reporter  story that Kristen Stewart has been deep-sixed from the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman , and the Twitter-verse buzzing over the news, we here at Movieline figure it’s a good time to ask our readers to weigh in on this debate. As Deadline points out, SWATH ‘s near $400 million worldwide box-office gross makes it an eligible vehicle for a sequel, and, internally, Universal is discussing whether to focus the next movie on the Huntsman character played by Chris Hemsworth, who is fast proving himself to be leading-man material.  According to our sister site, the Hollywood Reporter “used all this as a referendum to stamp out the participation of Stewart, because of recent events , which seemed a bit harsh and unfair, particularly since nary a word of the sequel or spinoff has yet been written.” (There’s also the bit of news that Universal has bought a crime drama called 90 Church: The True Story of the Narcotics Squad from Hell for  Huntsman  director Rupert Sanders.)   So, now we’re dying to ask you: Would you see SWATH 2 without Kristen Stewart? Check out the poll below and vote. It’ll be good practice for November. Take Our Poll Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Jodie Foster Sticks Up for Kristen Stewart, Blasts Media Culture

On the heels of her quasi firing from the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel , Kristen Stewart could use all the support she can get. And she now has some from one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood. Oscar winner Jodie Foster has penned an editorial for The Daily Beast in which stands up for her Panic Room costar – the pair appeared in that 2001 thrilled when Stewart was 11 – and slams the celebrity-obsessed media culture, which likes to “life up beautiful young people like gods and then pull them down to earth to gaze at their seams.” Foster, who has acted since the age of three, writes: “If I were a young actor today I would quit before I started. If I had to grow up in this media culture, I don’t think I could survive it emotionally… Would I drown myself in drugs, sex, and parties? Would I be lost?” Foster never cites Kristen’s affair with Rupert Sanders . She refrains from commenting on this specific scandal. Instead, she takes a larger view at what the 24/7 news channels, supermarket tabloids and blogosphere have created, saying the constant attention makes it difficult for an actor to give a “truthful” performance because he or she is always on guard. It’s impossible to be “fearful” in the face of such a barrage. “How can you do that if you know you will be personally judged, skewered, betrayed? If you’re smart, you learn to willfully disassociate, to compartmentalize. Putting your emotions into a safety box definitely comes in handy when the public throws stones.” Sounds a lot like the public persona Stewart gives off, doesn’t it? She’s never looked comfortable in the spotlight. How come? “She’s learned,” writes Foster. “She keeps her head down, her shades on, fists in her pockets. Don’t speak. Don’t look. Don’t cry.” Foster concludes with advice for her young, troubled friend: The public horrors of today eventually blow away. And yes, you are changed by the awful wake of reckoning they leave behind. You trust less. You calculate your steps. You survive. Hopefully in the process you don’t lose your ability to throw your arms in the air again and spin in wild abandon. That is the ultimate F.U. and–finally–the most beautiful survival tool of all. Don’t let them take that away from you.

Twi-hards — and the media —  have certainly been paying more attention to David Cronenberg since the filmmaker cast Robert Pattinson in his latest,  Cosmopolis , but they shouldn’t expect him to reciprocate. Movieline pal Grace Randolph caught The Fly director and his star on the red carpet at the New York premiere of Cosmopolis , where Cronenberg shrugged off the impact of Pattinson’s reported break-up with his Twilight star Kristen Stewart .  “Honestly, that doesn’t touch me, and it doesn’t touch the movie,” said Cronenberg. “It’s really irrelevant. Not to [Rob] obviously, but to me and the movie. It doesn’t change the movie at all,” Cronenberg added. “That’s all media stuff.” The media was in full frenzy at the Peggy Siegal Company and Gucci-hosted premiere, which took place at the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan, and Pattinson was their number-one target.  Despite the crush, RPatz seemed to be enjoying the attention, and at one point was caught on Randolph’s camera saying: “The only thing I can be scared of is being bad.”   Let’s see what the reviews say. Check out Grace’s interviews below. Watch It on YouTube. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Lena Dunham Muslim Hijab Joke Prompts Criticism, Not-Quite-Kristen-Stewart-Level Apology

Lena Dunham, creator and star of HBO’s Girls , posted a picture and caption on Twitter recently that some of her followers were offended by. Wearing a scarf resembling a Muslim hijab (below), Dunham wrote “I had a real goth / fundamentalist attitude when I woke up from my nap.” Lena certainly didn’t mean to insult anyone by it, but in the wake of the Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting , many were not amused: After people went crazy, Lena Dunham apologized, saying she hadn’t even heard about the shooting: “Been in production and completely not reading the news.” “Didn’t realize what a bad time it was to make a joke like that. Not a good excuse, but an excuse nonetheless. I’m glad you keep me informed and I’m deleting those tweets.” “Will spend tonight reading my pile of old NY Times, contemplating the boundaries of humor. I try and learn something new every day.” Then, after some fans came to Lena’s defense and said she shouldn’t be criticized for the joke/photo, the 26-year-old insisted she deserved it … while mocking Kristen Stewart’s apology for cheating on Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders : “You SHOULD apologize if you make a mistake! I mean, not to the K Stew level, but … ” Ouch. Point Lena?
